Today's Nintendo Direct revealed that Splatoon 2 will be getting a brand new solo campaign called the Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion.
As you can see in the video above, the campaign features a new Octoling star called Agent 8 and seems to have players exploring brand new locations with a very menacing overall tone. The game's new area will feature 80 test facility locations all connected by a subway, hinting that this update could be pretty generous in size.
As well as giving us a look at some fan-favourite characters in a new light, this expansion will also allow players to use Octolings in online multiplayer matches.
This is the first chunk of DLC for Splatoon 2 that will be a paid-for affair, launching this summer for $19.99. The expansion is available to pre-order right now and, if you do want to take the plunge already, you'll receive immediate access to Octo headgear and clothes for your main game.

Sexy subway squid.
They revealed this three years ago. Better late than never https://splatoonus.tumblr.com/post/124899141184/weve-received-a-sketch-from-one-of-our
Don't care too much about playing as an Octoling, but extra single player content and side stories are enough for me.
It's good to see Splatoon get the love it deserves after being stranded on Wii U, it's a great series
Like a tramp on chips
If it's only a single player expansion, then I would rather they release this as a standalone game instead.
It’s about time.
Though I’m sticking with my Inkling because squids are my favorite animal, not octopuses. But I likely will get the expansion for the campaign, that’s a sizeable campaign!
Meh. Spent too much time on this and Tennis. Where's the new games? Not just ports.
What a glorious game.
I don't even care about anything else announced anymore, just give me this.
Super excited for this! I was worried that Nintendo might be already finishing up with Splatoon 2, but this goes to show they intend to support it for at least another year! Definitely getting this! I have wanted to play as an Octoling since the first game, and not gonna lie, Agent 8 looks FINE.
For the amount of content being offered, I don't really mind the cost too much. Since both Splatoon 1 and 2 have both received generous amounts of free content months past their launch dates, I can say that $20 is not too bad for all that we will get in return.
HOLY CARP!!
That new Off the Hook song got me pumped! I'm super excited and considering preordering this instead of getting Star Allies! 😂
And did anyone else notice the new song in the 3.0 trailer was a brand new Chirpy Chips song?!
@sillygostly that would be great. Also would be more exciting
@Dev Dang, you beat me to the "HOLY CARP!" 😂
Sounds reasonable, I love the Single Player in Splatoon 2 as it is and wouldn't mind coughing up the money for an expansion.
@TheOpponent It wasn't revealed. It was Datamined in the first game.
Right now i’m so excited that i could eat my own mouth. God who cares garbage pure garbage hahahaha
@Heavyarms55 They had previously announced they will update the game for 1 year and there will be Splatfests for 2 years. I think the 1 year just meant free updates but now they will be doing paid DLC the next year.
@1UP_MARIO @sillygostly But that would also give them an excuse to make us pay more for it. I think $20 is a reasonable price for all that.
@1UP_MARIO : Nintendo really ought to adopt the Luigi U model more often where expansions are available either as standalone games or as additional content to existing games.
@MH4 : A physical copy is worth paying a small premium for IMO.
Wait, why are people angry about this being paid? This is a massive expansion and we have had a year of free updates as it is. Talk about greedy and entitled. Any other company would have made it ALL paid DLC.
Just bought it with my gold coins. Now the wait begins...
@sillygostly That's true, I agree.
However, I'm glad it's DLC just for the sheer fact it's cheaper.
Tbh if they make a standalone spin-off, I'd want it to be a (s)platformer.
@sillygostly totally agree. I bought Luigi u on launch separately and enjoyed it more
Yesssss
This DLC and Captain Toad were my favorite parts of the Direct. This looks AMAZING. Jeez.
@ThatNyteDaez And nothing was done with it in the first game.
Will be getting this. More single player content for me!!!
Yes! More single player content.
@Heavyarms55 I actual agree with you. A year of free updates and 2 years of splat fests. I think the price is justified.
I'm in.
I am so HYPED for this! Finally, playable Octolings and even a whole new campaign with cutscenes potentially too. $20 is admittedly pushing it a little but I am definetly picking it up.
Wow, this looks great!
This was an insta-buy for me as soon as it went live on the eshop.
Is Splatoon 2 single player as good as Splatoon for Wii U single player mode was, because that is all that I like about Splatoon games don't really care for the multiplayer that much.
I'm interested in the DLC but not the game. If there's a $60 bundle for BF I'll consider it.
Also, Octo as the first paid DLC for SSB.
About time we got playable Octolings. I like that 80s font in that logo.
That music in the trailer was absolutely off the hook
Its on 2MM Japan alone, it OBVIOUSLY is a main IP right now.
This looks great
Will the Octoling turn into an octopus when swimming?
When Splatoon 2 came out I didn't get it because it seemed too similar to Splatoon 1, but I'm more interested after seeing this. Hopefully there''ll be a complete edition or something down the line and I may get that.
I love single player stuff so I'll probably get this. Splatoon had quite good single player content.
I stopped playing Splatoon 2's story mode because it felt exactly like the first one, but this looks absolutely amazing!
The stages looked super creative and that music was so good. Excited to see what they have in store as the lore looks super interesting. between this and X rank, I'm putting at least another 100 into the game xD.
So getting this. Was so hyped when I saw the octoling. Then captain showed up , and finally off the hook. The splatoon stuff was great in general
Yes from the direct thus was the only thing worth getting.
I noticed that in the Direct they said that this is the first paid DLC content...
...Hey?!
It looks cool and all and I realize I'm in the minority here, but this is why DLC annoys me. I'd finished Splatoon and was happy to move on. It's so hard to keep up with the relentless video game schedule nowadays (and keep on top of life as well!) and clear one's backlog (which includes RPGs that go on for 70 hours for some reason...) that it's annoying to me when a game you thought you'd finished suddenly becomes unfinished, and you have to go back to it and pay an extortionate price to get the complete version because it suddenly became more bloated.
Obviously you can say "it's optional", but if you're a fan/completionist, then you feel compelled (which DLC soley exists to exploit), plus, everything's optional, buying the game in the first place was optional.
This.. this was absolutely one of the top highlights of the Direct for me. Disregarding that it's paid DLC (which I think is pretty good value in all honesty, assuming the 80 levels are of a fair length!), I had not even expected them to expand upon the story AT ALL. It does kind of suck that Octolings are going to be locked behind a paywall though, especially for those who really wanted them and won't be able to afford them, but.. for those who can afford it, I really do think that the DLC is well worth the money (again assuming all those levels are of a fair length).
I do wonder how many hairstyle options the Octolings are going to get, though. The trailer only showed one for the boy and one for the girl as far as I have seen, unless you also count the one for the enemy Octolings and that hairstyle is also an option (which would be a little silly not to be since it's THE iconic look for them at this point). I still think I'll mainly be playing as an Inkling, but I'm still REALLY excited to have Octolings finally joining here!
I also wonder if you'll be forced to play as that Octoling girl there in the story part. They did specifically keep mentioning that you'd be playing as 'her' and all that, so maybe Agent 8 really is this one established Octoling unlike Agents 3 and 4 which are full-on optional looks decided by the player (although one could argue that they are the default female Inkling looks in both games, going by official artwork).
I don't really play the singleplayer campaign but I'm such a huge Splatoon fan that I just gotta get this DLC.
For a second, I thought the trailer was a nicki manaj video.
