Indie developer JoyMasher has released a brand new gameplay video for the upcoming Blazing Chrome, a retro run and gun title heading to Switch "soon".
The game is actually inspired by, and is acting as an homage to, Contra and Metal Slug - two run and gun classics which have stayed firmly in the minds of fans since launching in the '80s and '90s respectively. We're told that the developer, which is actually made up of a couple who have turned their attention to game development, is currently hard at work polishing the final tidbits of gameplay - hopefully we won't have too long to wait until its released.
If the video above isn't enough for you, we were also treated to a separate video just a couple of months ago. You can check that one out here if you're interested. Featuring an Earth-saving story, plenty of power-ups, powerful exosuits, futuristic weaponry, and six different stages to explore, this one could be worth keeping an eye on.
But what do you think? Feel free to share your thoughts on the gameplay footage in the comment section below.

Nice! love these type of games.
This game looks sexier every time I see it. Hope it has online co-op, but if not, still buying!
Listen... if this is 2 player, count me ALL the way in. I love what I see, and I love Contra action. Looks like a winner but will still await a review.
so many games, so little money
Day one. Amid those boring pixel art roguelikes, this Contra inspired game shine like a star. Day one.
@MeloMan Offline co-op has already been shown; online functionality is still a mystery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYjQJrBxYAk
@MeloMan It was confirmed as 2 player couch co-op, not sure about online.
I found out about this one last Spring, I think. I've been keeping an eye on it since then and am really looking forward to it. Looks great here. I love the visual style they've chosen.
the type of game I like. one more to my list.
Paused the video at 1:05. Seen all I need to see. SOLD!!!
Now this is pixel art done properly with passion, not iOS games trying to be retro. I will be getting this day one
I think Nintendolife will give it a review of 8/10 because it's retro or a review of 5/10 because it's retro. :0
Nice. Reminds me specifically of Contra: Hard Corps (aka Probotector) on Genesis / Mega Drive.
I've been following this one since Day 1 - it looks and sounds amazing! Joymasher's previous games - Oniken and Odallus: The Dark Call are also not to be missed! While they are PC-only so far, Oniken feels like an old-school Natsume game and Odallus has heavy Castlevania tropes. Both are terrific!
They're also working on a ninja mech game in the vein of Hagane, Strider and Shinobi.
oh man, this looks better and better every single time I see it. I want it NOW.
I was sold one minute in, instabuy
Yes this is on my to buy list now.
YES PLEASE!!! Looks awesome!
I'm so hyped for this!!!
Someone needs to remake Contra Force. I liked that Gradius-style power-up system. Fix the slowdown and make it 4-player simultaneous. Anyway, this is bought Day One.
This looks like Contra Hard Corps on the Genesis. If it's half as good as that gem, I will gladly scream "Take my money!".
Looks awesome!
I never played any Contra or Metal Slug games before. Are any of them good?
Good to see Sheena back in action! This dev could totally bring back the girls from battle mania!
@LinkxPeach not only are many of them good games, they are THE reason many people are still passionate about 2D sidescolling games
@LinkxPeach
Long answer: They are phonemonal probably two of the most challenging arcade run and gun shoot em up franchise you have ever play way better than any of the modern stuff they made nowadays like Call of Duty, Battlefied, and even Halo. Go out and play them as they are available for 3DS, Wii, Wii U and Switch digital shop somewhere.
Short answer: Yes, they are good.
@NinChocolate Hmm... Sounds interesting. I'd love to play Contra and Metal Slug games now.
@retro_player_22 Hmm... I might just have to check those games on Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch and depending on what they have in the Nintendo eShop. I may have to check the Nintendo Wii U's eShop. Thanks, for the recommendations.
Can't wait! I've been watching this one for a while
@LinkxPeach I can recommend Contra 3 on 3DS eshop and Metal Slug 1 on Switch eshop
Can’t wait to add this bad boy to my collection. Love the music and awesome retro cyberpunk visual aesthetics.
BRING IT ON!
Been following this one for months, literally my most anticipated game of the year.
@LinkxPeach No, that's why everyone loves them.
I will wishlist it as soon as I can.
@NinChocolate Okay, ty. Looking forward to checking it out.
Looks lovely.
I just realized you can do short comments again. They finally came to their senses, we live in a free world.
Day one buy for me!
This is what classic run 'n gun should be.
I was recently thinking about how much I dont like mercenary kings because they gunked up the formula for how classic run and gun games should work.
Adding in Monster Hunter style grinding for new parts and a gears of war style reload system makes the gameplay feel slow and clunky. These games are at their best with simple running and shooting.
@Oat well said. I think there is still an audience for shorter, straightforward, arcade-style games. I think the trend of Metroidvania and grinding for items or experience is, as I said previously, a way to add hours(and dollars) to the game for marketing purposes, and a way to try to appeal to everyone, which is often a bad idea.
@Mach_Rider I do love the old Natsume games. They're some of my favorites on the NES and SNES. I loved Oniken, so I'm already a fan of Joymasher. I bought Odallus, but had to postpone playing it due to some computer issues that came up which involved starting fresh. But I wanted to thank you for reminding me about their ninja game, Moonrider. I'd seen it once and it slipped my mind for various reasons and was glad to refresh my memory by looking at some video. I don't know if that or Blazing Chrome look more appealing to me, but they both look great.
This looks great. This genre can easily be a bountiful well of video game hits simply by following their lead, namely to be highly inspired by 16-bit era style of action and presentation but technically enhanced.
