Love it or hate it, the battle royale genre is still one of the hottest areas of gaming at the moment. By this point, we imagine almost everyone on the planet has at least heard of Fortnite, and other games like Apex Legends and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds have also consistently been making headlines since they launched.
Some big-name developers are still to tackle the genre, though, and we wouldn't be surprised to see several stay away from it entirely - how do you compete with games which already have player bases in the hundreds of millions? One such developer still to experiment with the 100-player madness is PlatinumGames (Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, Nier: Automata), although that doesn't mean that it isn't interested.
Studio head Atsushi Inaba has revealed that he would be interested to see how PlatinumGames could put its own spin on the genre, stating that he'd want it to steer away from something that "was just shooting". His comments come from a recent interview with VGC:
"Yeah, it’s a very interesting genre. Quite frankly, I personally think it would be interesting to see what sort of take we could have on it. We wouldn’t want to make something that was just shooting. With Apex Legends the quality bar is so high that we wouldn’t want to go in that direction. Trying to come up with something that’s our taste in that genre could be very interesting."

I think Platinum Games would be better at creating a multi player Musou game. So probably something more like Battlefield with guns strapped to your shoes, or a bot flying next to you and skin tight clothes.
Only type of battle royale im interested i is tetris 99
I'm kind of interested as well but I'm getting kind of worn out on Battle Royale games in general. It would have to be pretty unique for me to want to give it a try and they are known for making unique games so I'll give them a chance if they make one. Does anybody else want a Scalebound Battle Royale?
Madworld would be perfect! I loved that game!!! Thoughts??
In my opinion Platinum tend to thrive when their games keep the action concentrated and concise, and with a bunch of surprises thrown in. I’m not sure if they would succeed at Battle Royale with the way those games tend to play.
Anarchy Reigns multiplayer could fairly smoothly translate into a battle royal game.
This sounds oddly intrigueing. Wonderful 101 spinoff much?
Uhh, while I am fond of the studio, I would rather not have another BR game, not only because I dislike the genre as a whole, but because we already have WAY to many BR games as it is.
Imagine a Diablo III twist on battle royale...
kid icarus uprising online style would be sick
@Fake-E-Lee
Sooooooooooooo... Anarchy Reigns?
Some gameplay for the uninitiated (Basically everyone that isn't a Platinum fan)

... no more battle Royale. Just put wonderful 101 and NeirAutomata in switch. Please and thank you
Villainous 101?
101 different supervillains with comical and/or oddly-specific powers?
Just make Anarchy Reigns free to play, and bump free for all from 16 to 60 or 80 characters. Introduce Fortnite money tactics. boom. MONEY!
Even if it won't become a fortnite killer, it probably will have moderate succes.
Eh, not a huge fan of the genre so I think Platinum's talents would be wasted. I'd much rather see Wonderful 102, or a Platinum Racing game.
@judaspete I was thinking the same thing! Anarchy Reigns 2 anyone?
101 heroes fight to their death, with one last hero standing. Battle Royale 101. In the end it's all about the execution, many games developers have good ideas but it failed after they developed it.
I rather see Nintendo do a battle royale as a DLC for Zelda BotW. Imagine 100 people roaming the gigantic map of BotW in a battle royale game.
@Fake-E-Lee a total disaster
Please NO!! Platinum don’t lower yourself making battle royale rubbish. Stick to quality single player experiences.
