Assuming this game runs well on the Switch (and I see no reason why this wouldn’t), the Switch version will likely be the definitive version for me. I’m actually kinda glad it won’t be an exclusive for long since it’ll help the game get more traction and hopefully coax Sega into reviving more of their old IPs
Ugh, I'd love one of these. I have pretty severe anxiety from a viral infection I've been healing from for a year now and having one of these to use as a fidget cube or something would be so awesome. Guess I'll just have to take a chainsaw to a broken NES controller instead to make my own lol
dang, that’s a bummer that this didn’t live up to its full potential. I just played the original for a review on my channel, NichePlays, and thought that (aside from how slippery it played and how unfair it’s boss batted were) it was an alright game. I don’t know if I’ll be up for the remake so soon though, especially if they didn’t do much to improve the gameplay itself, though
Thank God if this is true. I’m currently about halfway through Symphony of the Night on my old android phone (retroarch + my DS4 has made that my go to way to play games via streaming or emulation) and was gonna play through this next. If it comes out on the Switch, I’d gladly pick it up to play on a larger screen!
@Tyranexx for posterity sake though, they refer to the game with an unpronounceable symbol that looks like Prince’s O(+> symbol, only with a tri-force on the bottom of it
Oh nice! I'm actually pretty excited for this one. I just played through the original for a review I'm making this week and, while I was pretty underwhelmed by Alex Kidd/felt that his first game didn't age all that well, I can't deny how gorgeous and fun this one looks!
Honestly not that shocked it’s from this Switch subreddit. I can’t honestly say I’ve had too many great experiences on it (or Reddit as a whole for that matter, talk about a sarcastic pit of despair lol)
@durr I believe I read on a different site that it was because they were trying to study the games code to find ways to better optimize it (as for why they wanted to do that to begin with, it was probably just for fun/the coding practice)
Ya know, I’m honesty okay with how Nintendo is treating Mario Kart on mobile. My main thing is that I just want a new console installment (that isn’t a side game like that RC car one that just came out). I wonder if they’ve considered releasing a new Mario Kart on Switch/mobile together? I could see that being interesting, make it free on mobile and switch but include micro transactions. But, if you purchases the game for retail on console, you get a bunch of exclusive cosmetics/characters, maybe a few exclusive cups, and you can just get future content in DLC bundles instead of micro transactions.
Edit: and cross play. Imagine cross play on something like that and how cool it would be to play Mario Kart with your non switch owning friends!
This warmed my heart. I had a friend in the hospital for ~3 months in the spring and the whole time she was there, she basically kept herself sane by playing her PSP (which had custom firmware and was loaded with SNES roms). Even my girlfriend wishes she had her Switch a few weeks ago, when she was in the hospital. I could imagine something like Stardew being very comforting in a hospital
I don’t see anything wrong with this though? The Switch offers such a different experience/type of convenience to the Playstations and Xbox’s of the world that it’s pretty reasonable to own one and a rival console. I own a Switch, a decent PC (for work mainly since I’m a video editor) and an XB1 that I’m selling for a PS5 when that becomes an option for me and I can honestly say I’ve spent way more on my Switch library this year than I have on PC or Xbox games
For the love of God, I know this doesn’t mean anything but boy does it make me wish Super Mario RPG would get a SNES online release or something. Hell, let Square port it with the same QoL improvements that they’ve added to their Final Fantasy rereleases. Or just throw it on the eShop with zero improvements, a $9.99 or $14.99 price tag and take it off on March 31st. I don’t even care at this point, I just want a simple and convenient way to play the dang thing
Huh funny, I was just playing this a few weeks ago! It’s... okay? It’s not a bad game by any means but it does seem rooted in its generation. For a few bucks and with a few Quality of Life upgrades, this might be a bit of fun, I guess.
SMH this is pretty roundabout. And I say this as a person that works at tech company that also had to rely on a roundabout way to get videos onto an iPhone. Why didn’t they just have this stuff go through the Switch Online app and actually allow iOS users to download stuff?
I think the first time I ever beat SMB was on a Syrian Famiclone my Dad got when he was visiting family there in the late 90s. It had “9999” games on it, which were really just the same dozen games looped with game genie codes on different versions. There was also a SMB version that had Sonic the Hedgehog on it rolling on a giant ball? So that’s a thing.
Edit: I was wrong. It wasn’t Sonic on a Ball, it was just Sonic’s legs running fast and making a circle lol — https://youtu.be/3gBiVKvrxwQ
@RCGamer for their current price, I’d say they’re worth it. They have less input lag (or so I’m told, I honestly can’t tell any meaningful difference) and the drop dash from Sonic Mania, which is so much fun on these games. Marble Zone went from being a pretty meh experience to a much smoother/faster play through, thanks to being able to cheese the level with the spin and drop dash
I know it’s been said before but SegaSonic The Hedgehog would have been amazing, especially if they gave us a bunch of fun/different control options. Could anyone imagine using a joy on to simulate the track controls? Motion control haters would’ve hated it, but that would’ve been kinda fun for a bit (before likely switching over to a more usable control scheme)
This is nuts and reminds me of something you’d expect from robbin season (name for the time before Christmas in Atlanta when robberies exponentially increase). This seriously sucks for people dropping $500 on this stuff :/ I used to work customer service retail and remember having to check returned consoles after hearing stories of people taking PS4s or XB1s out of the box and replacing it with something equal in weight before successfully returning it
There’s wishing someone made an affordable 2600 style controller for me to play the 2600 collection and Namco Museum with my Dad with... and then there’s this
Anyone with the first one know if it’s worth picking up with the second one coming out soon? I really wanna get into Puyo Puyo (been playing it on SNES online and my old copy of Mean Bean Machine on my Genesis), but wanna try this out. Not sure if it’s worth getting the first though or if I should wait to get this at launch.
@realityxaidan I might catch some flack for this but, honestly, Final Fantasy IX's my favorite in the franchise (hence my avatar photo being Zidane!) and the first FF game I actually ever beat (just this year actually). It's a great game and, while it is a tribute to the classic era of FF that's full of references to those games, I don't think you can go wrong here.
It is worth mentioning that this game has a lot of blurry textures and poor upscaling in it though (as does FFVII and FFVIII for what it's worth). If you have even an alrightish PC, I'd recommend going for the version of the game available on Steam there. You can download something called the Moguri mod for it, which uses AI upscaling to give the game a fresh coat of paint. It sounds arbitrary, but it really transforms the game into something gorgeous, while preserving the art style. Can't go wrong with the Switch version if not though! Especially on handheld mode.
I might be the only person to actively like the NES game (it’s honestly just NES Kung Fu with some meh platforming thrown in, it’s not terrible), and even I think this looks like fodder for the bargain bin
Ah Panel De Pon, how I love you. I play this all the time on my switch through SNES online.
Honestly, it’s kinda nuts that Nintendo hasn’t made a mobile version of this yet. While I’m not one for micro transactions in games, PDP is perfect for cosmetic DLC. Give mobile and switch users the base Panel De Pon (and maybe Tetris Attack) themes to start and then lock new themes based off of popular Nintendo franchises behind a pay wall or experience system. People could pay for a Pokémon Puzzle League theme, an Animal Crossing Skin, or even wackier stuff like an Earthbound or Star Tropics theme.
Is this game worth playing? I know the NES inspired Bloodstained games are much beloved, but I honestly don't know if I've ever read much on the Metroidvania installments.
Love this artstyle and can't wait to give this a go. Bring on more low poly love!
For everyone wondering why devs wanna make these kinds of games, I imagine it's cost effective to make low poly games/that they love the art style and have the same nostalgia for this era of gaming that a lot of us do 😇
Interesting list for sure, though I'd probably put 3D World higher. Man oh man do I love that game. I distinctly remember playing it all the time over the holidays in 2014 after working 12 hour shifts at Toys R Us or after a day of college classes. It was such a great way to end a long day and was the first time in years that I genuinely grinned ear to ear playing a game. Mario Odyssey did that for me too.
Can't wait to relive 3D World on my Switch this March!
I might be out of my depths here but I feel like the people who honestly care about this issue either:
A: are actively trying to stay angry at Nintendo over their output this year (which is a valid thing to be upset about, I guess, but overplayed at this point and nowhere near as bad as it's been made out to be, given the pandemic
B: Have played Sunshine on an emulator before. To which I say, maybe the collection isn't for you? Like, if you wanna play 64/Sunshine/Galaxy at 60fps and 4k via an emulator or the source port... go ahead? While it may have initially been scoped out as a slam dunk for Mario's 35th, it's pretty obvious that Nintendo switched gears due to their work from home situation and aimed for a simple, but flawed, layup of a release for the holidays. And for that, it's fine and makes for a great release.
I dunno. Complaining for the sake of complaining doesn't accomplish much, even when there are valid points sprinkled in there. At a certain point, you'll just get tuned out by most people.
@Yanina yeah, why Sega made that game baffles me. It looks... fine? Just weird/counter intuitive to go from All Stars to that, I guess. Then again, we're talking about Sega lmao. Sega of Japan allowed Sega of America to develop and release the 32x 6 months before the Saturn, so counter-intuitive must be their mission statement or something
@Yanina ever play the sequel Sega All Stars Racing Transformed? It's an even better game in my opinion and is on the Wii U, PS3/360 and PC for pretty cheap. If I remember correctly it has a JSR stage in it (and a Nights one that I remember really liking too)
The show itself is fine (actually rewatching it right now and aside from the teen storyline, which bugs the hell out of me) and a fun/cheesy time but this looks pretty unpolished. Might pick it up on a sale though, seeing as I grew up with the NES game and actually like that game way more than anyone else seemed to back in the day
@mazzel yep. Every subsequent port was based on the Android version (you can actually tell because each port after it specifically says you can't use emojis when you're naming a character, even when it's on a platform that doesn't support emojis)
AustinSV did an amazing video running through each of the ports of FF9 and the various differences they have. It's actually a great watch and his videos that outline differences in ports of games are insanely well researched.
FFIX (if my profile pic doesn't count as a vote on it's own haha). Yes, it has longer load times than the XB1/PS4 versions and yes, it is ultimately a port of the PC version, which was a port of the Android version, but it's just that great a game. Loved it since I was a kid and had it on the PSX (even though I couldn't beat the first disc) and the game genuinely looks great on handheld (even with it's upscaled backgrounds.) As for docked, it looks fine I guess. Not great, but passable. Really curious about the Moguri mod on PC that uses deep learning to upscale the backgrounds into true HD.
@retroking I wouldn't call them trash, necessarily, and I respect the hustle/do watch their videos every so often — I just find it a bit exhausting.
I do get it though; I used to do the YT hustle in college/was a full time writer/editor for a YouTube channel with over a million subs, but I found that the 'YT life' did more to make me hate being creative than it did to make me happy. So I guess knowing RGT is gonna push out a very badly edited video that's full of misreads and him stumbling over/restarting sentences just rubs me the wrong way, even if I'm sure he's a cool dude.
Here before Spawnwave and RGT85 clog up my YouTube recommendations with videos about how Nintendo is gonna have a direct this week, followed by a video about how Nintendo is failing at 2020 if they don't have a direct/announce first party titles.
@Slowdive It's funny you mention seeing it as an alternative to console platformers — that's exactly what it was.
Pre-ID software John Carmack/Romero essentially reverse-engineered Super Mario Bros 3 as a proof of concept for a DOS port of the game. Nintendo, naturally, axed that as soon as they saw it and they just decided to turn their work into a new IP.
I have a Commander Keen collection (I think it's a collection at least) on Steam and it's a pretty fun series of games, if I remember correctly. I don't think they've aged as well as their console counterparts though personally.
Btw is your name inspired by the band? Slowdive is one of my favorite bands of all time so it's always cool to see another fan out there!
Ouch. Am I the only one that thinks some of this looks a bit rough around the edges, lighting wise? I'm sure the game itself will be fine (the kind of game that'll be worth a look if you like the property or remember the original series from your childhood like I do/you find it in the bargain bin) but this definitely doesn't look like it'll be worth more than $20 for me.
Instinctively, I almost wanna call it Ben 10: Rise of Lyric lol
@MysteryCupofJoe man this resonated with me. I have way too many memories of coming up with my own little stories/scenrios on 007 Nightfire or Quake 3 when I'd play against bots.
I can't think of the last FPS/game that I've played that included bots. It might have been the first Call of Duty Black Ops or something haha.
Either way, bots would be nice. Even if they aren't that smart or anything, giving people more ways to play is always a win in my book. Playing against CPU undocked + a good tv show on in the background is basically how I played Smash Ultimate last summer when I was just trying to unlock characters

Here before Spawnwave and RGT85 clog up my YouTube recommendations with videos about how Nintendo is gonna have a direct this week, followed by a video about how Nintendo is failing at 2020 if they don't have a direct/announce first party titles.
Re: Commander Keen In Keen Dreams Comes To Switch Again, This Time With New Levels
@Slowdive sick! Souvlaki for life lol
Re: Commander Keen In Keen Dreams Comes To Switch Again, This Time With New Levels
Re: PSP Prinny Platformers Slide To Switch This October
Oh nice! I just saw GameSacks video on the PSP a week or two ago and these games looked fun!
Re: Video: Ben 10: Power Trip Gets Its First Gameplay Trailer
Re: Random: Nintendo Posts New Image Of Mario In The Sunshine, Internet Goes Wild Again
Guys, we're all missing what this is REALLY hyping up. The tweet has words on it which could only mean one thing...
A remaster of Mario Teaches Typing.
Hear me out, hear me out. Touch controls and support for a keyboard via USB or USB C in handheld mode.
(Joking, of course. I'd love a Sunshine remaster as much as the next person, but I really don't think that's what this is for).
Re: Upcoming Fantasy Battle Royale Spellbreak Gets Another Set Of New Screenshots
Re: Random: Japan's Mysterious Sonic Statue Receives A Fittingly Puzzling Restoration
@Yanina hm, that explains why the statue can do the drop dash from Sonic Mania...
