The two pieces of tech may well be 40 years apart, but it's possible to play on a Nintendo Switch with a 1977 Atari joystick.
YouTube channel Will It Work?, which we've featured on the site in the past thanks to a project which got a Wii Nunchuk working with Mario Kart Tour on mobile devices, has shared a new video which shows the joystick in action.
The controller only features the joystick itself and a single button, but despite this, it's still possible to get it working on Switch and jump into a number of games – as long as you have the necessary adaptors and a second controller at the ready to navigate pesky in-game menus.
The video takes us on a tour of Donkey Kong, Tetris 99 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, all of which can be played to varying degrees using the 40-year-old controller. Make sure to check it out below:
Pretty cool, huh? As ever, feel free to share your thoughts on this in the comments.

I have about 200 hours clocked into Atari Flashback Classics on switch. I need this in my life.
When you are bored with your Switch, you could play a different console OR you could do this.
I don't have enough time to play Switch conventionally, let alone fannying around with guff like this.
I remember my joystick not really working half the time on my 2600.
I already have a hard time trying to play anything possible with the GC controller because of the lack of ZL e "minus" buttons
I loved these joysticks. They worked on the Commodore 64 as well. The way the top of the stick would nestle in the palm of your hand would lead to stupendously fast race times in Decathlon.
I always love having the closest thing to an authentic controller for my legacy games, so this is awesome!
An exercise in complete time wasting
@Batty5 ha lol thought I was the only one who used these for the c64 I used them for all those kinda games combat school summer games winter games they felt like they were purpose built for those type of games
Would love this for Atari Flashback Classics.
Wow... just looking at that joystick takes me right back in time! 😊
Playing Atari games with an Atari joystick was impractical too.
There's absolutely no point to this. But I still think it's neat that it can be done. lol
The Atari Flashback Collection has vanished from the Switch e-shop.
I loved the Atari 2600 joystick. It gave me the sort of control I just don’t get from a thumb-sized joystick. I used to hunt around second-hand stores in London looking for these, as my mate and I used them to play Sensible World of Soccer on the Amiga, and each one would only last a few months. Good times
I used to love that Joystick. Though I owned it in the early 1980s
i love re-purposing older tech. I just purchased an adapter for my Quickshot Joystick that uses the game port pin out to USB to play Wing Commander on Win 10. It is still a solid series of games.
If it doesn't drift, I'd try it.
There’s wishing someone made an affordable 2600 style controller for me to play the 2600 collection and Namco Museum with my Dad with... and then there’s this
@chardir What makes you believe that?
@Heavyarms55 Just not an Atari guy at all, hmm?
@Dog The Atari 2600 is before my time. I got nothing against it or anything. The reason I consider this pointless is because this controller simply has too few buttons to be useful. It's neat that it can be made to work at all though.
Oh man, I was so proud of myself as a kid when I discovered that you can plug one of these things into the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and it actually worked. I kind of wish I still had one just so I could update that feeling for modern times.
