Update: We've switched out Famicom's Final Fantasy V in the poll below for Final Fantasy V Advance on the GBA, the version available worldwide rather than Japan-only. We've left FF2 for Famicom as that's only available internationally (on Nintendo systems) in the GBA dual pack with FF1.
What does this mean to you? Well, if you previously rated FF5, those ratings won't transfer to the Advance version, so you'll need to rate FF5 again to have it reflected in the results (coming soon). Apologies for the alteration, but we think it makes more sense now. Remember, you can continue to rate the games after the results go live and the list will automatically change to reflect this. Carry on!
The imminent re-release of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition has got us looking back over the long-running and celebrated (and confusingly numbered in the West) Final Fantasy series. Although the entire saga began on Nintendo's Famicom, there was a long while from the mid-'90s that the mainline games weren't to be found on Nintendo consoles; remakes on handhelds, yes, but not the new numbered entries.
Thankfully, the situation has been rectified somewhat thanks to numerous re-releases on Switch of games previously only available elsewhere. Although there are a few entries unaccounted for (XIII, MMORPGs XI and XIV, and XV in its full form), Nintendo gamers can now enjoy the majority of the series. With that in mind, we thought a ranking of all the mainline entries was in order, and we'd like your help. Just what are the best Final Fantasy games on Nintendo systems?
Below you'll find the candidates; registered Nintendo Life users can click on the stars and rate any (or all) of the games out of 10. If you've previously rated these games--excellent!--you can just put your feet up. Much like our Top 50 platform polls, the resulting ranking (which we'll publish soon) will be created from the database of NL User Ratings and is therefore fluid and subject to change, even after publication. If you're in the middle of a Final Fantasy game and don't want to rate it yet, no sweat - you can add your score to the game at any time in the future and it will still count and potentially influence the ranking.
We've dispensed with the bewildering host of spin-offs, crossovers, remakes and more that form one of gaming's biggest juggernaut franchises - just the mainline games today, folks. To keep things simpler in voting terms, we've only included one version of the games to pick from below. Final Fantasy II, for example, is the Famicom original rather than the GBA's dual pack of Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. While remade versions might have altered the base games--sometimes rather substantially--those differences (and preferences) are ripe material for discussion when the results are in.
We've also included the 'demade' Pocket Edition of Final Fantasy XV; we're under no illusions and don't expect it to rank highly, but it's the only version available on Nintendo platformers. The nature of the 'voting' here makes it easy to discount from the final ranking if it doesn't qualify in your book.
So, big swords at the ready! Let's get rating...
Rate each Final Fantasy game:
Click the stars below to rate out of 10 each Final Fantasy game you've played:
Thanks for rating! We'll be finding out the results in the near future, but remember: much like our platform Top 50s, the list here is fluid, so even if you miss out on voting before the results are revealed, you can still influence the ranking after publication.

Oh this is an easy one!
Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition
IX. Enough said.
You can’t go wrong with Final Fantasy VIII. It was my first FF and I had a lot of great mementoes from it. Even taking away that “nostalgia” aspect, it was still a really fun game.
Why is 9 between 4 and 5 ?!
@Yas
the way your profile photo matches your comment
Why vi advance and not the snes version?
@Yas
Because they used Roman numerals. IX comes before V alphabetically.
@Yas I'd guess because it's in English alphabetical order. and "I" comes before "V"
My favourite memories of FF were playing III, IV, V and VI on the original DS (which took the GBA V and VI carts). All great games. Nothing has really topped that since.
It used to be FFX out of those. But now I have played all the remasters and re-releases on the Nintendo consoles, it's XII Zodiac Age.
Haven't played 8 remastered and 9 yet on the Switch.
EDIT: Actually VI ADVANCE wow'd and engulfed me the most back in the day
This is reeeal tough. VI, V, IX, X, XII, VII, VIII are all awesome, I loved III and IV on ds, Four Heroes of Light is a blast. My vote would either go to V or VI currently
@Yas Because I is before V in the alphabet.
@Yas Alphabetical order with Roman Numerals doesn't equal numerical order.
I'd say a toss up between IV or IX for me I guess but none of the mainline Final Fantasy games that I've played have been anything special. If we included spinoffs then it'd definitely be Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call.
@LinktotheFuture @Danondorf @RushDawg Yeah, I know. It's just... wrong though!
@jobvd
Yeah, the version choices for the earlier entries are weird here.
I would have picked:
Final Fantasy I (GBA)
Final Fantasy II (GBA)
Final Fantasy III (DS)
Final Fantasy IV (GBA)
Final Fantasy V (GBA)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
The sad thing is, though I have a few FF games backlogged, I still haven't played a game in the series yet. So far the closest games I've played are from the Bravely Default franchise.
Trying to decide between III/VI on the SNES Classic or X on Switch as my first foray when the time comes.
FFIII SNES (FFVI)
XII Zodiac Age is the best port in my opinion. IX was fantastic and my favorite back then, but the treatment given to the mobile/Switch version didn't do it enough justice (fonts, blurry environments, menus).
You failed to even include Crystal Chronicles on the list, even though it was on Gamecube originally.
VI is the best and anyone who says vii of higher is a sonypony. Never forget how Nintendo got backstabbed by square.
@LN3000 They didn't include spinoffs, thus why FFTA/2 aren't on here. Just the mainliners.
FFVII, for sure, with V right behind it.
I know the article dealt with this in the preface, but it's sorta silly to count the PlayStation games as on a Nintendo console — while technically accurate now, no one thinks of FF VII (etc.) as a "Nintendo game." Feels akin to responding to "what's the best Sonic game for Nintendo" by saying "Sonic 2 via the Genesis / Mega Drive Collection."
That said, I am THRILLED they have come to Switch (as someone who, somehow, has never owned a Sony console) and look forward to playing them! So far I've only played the original FF for NES (via Wii), which I enjoyed a lot!
The answer is IX, which remains the best Final Fantasy game of all time.
Unpopular opinion: World of Final Fantasy on Switch. I don't see on the list though.
No love for 'Tactics Advance'?
FF VII & FF VIII Twin Pack for Switch.
Having a physical copy of FF VII on a Nintendo platform is almost as significant as the game itself.
@San_D This person has impeccable taste.
Reading all the comments makes me realize that the days of unanimously rating VI as not only the best FF, but also one of the best RPGs in general seem to be over.
🤷🏻♂️Haven’t played a single one. Didn’t know where to start
FF VII but only slightly better than Tactics Advance and the X/X-2 pack.
FFVI (SNES) is my favorite. The beautiful pixel art and Kefka seal the deal.
@Yanina I’m not a fan of VI Advance without patching in the music and cleaning up the graphics. It needs a proper port not the bastardisation of the Steam version.
FFIX (if my profile pic doesn't count as a vote on it's own haha). Yes, it has longer load times than the XB1/PS4 versions and yes, it is ultimately a port of the PC version, which was a port of the Android version, but it's just that great a game. Loved it since I was a kid and had it on the PSX (even though I couldn't beat the first disc) and the game genuinely looks great on handheld (even with it's upscaled backgrounds.) As for docked, it looks fine I guess. Not great, but passable. Really curious about the Moguri mod on PC that uses deep learning to upscale the backgrounds into true HD.
@nessisonett Ah I see. Maybe the poll should add VI as the SNES version as well.
For me the best Final Fantasy ever is FFVI. It's deserves a full remake
I've never been much of an RPG guy at all outside of the Mario ones, but I played Dragon Quest 11 late last year and absolutely loved it. I'm currently playing through Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, which I'm also really enjoying. I want to continue to branch out, so I've been considering Final Fantasy 7, since it's the one I've heard most praise about and I would also finally have a connection with Cloud when I play Smash Bros. I don't have a PS4, though, so would downloading the original on Switch still be recommended? I know they are very different, but is one version considered objectively better? I imagine the old one is considered the best, but I think the dated CG might be a bit off-putting for me.
Would appreciate any suggestions/recommendations! If anyone knows of any other good RPGs I should try, I would be glad to hear it, but keep in mind I don't play Mature games, so I wouldn't be interested in Persona 5 or one of the newer Final Fantasies. Thanks!
I still don't understand why Final Fantasy IX didn't get a physical release when all the others did, even if VII/VIII Remastered's is only available in Japan. I'd import it.
FFIII/VI on SNES is my favorite video game of all time. I really liked every FF game until after XII, where my interest in the series really kind of died off.
You’d have thunk my answer to be obvious, but I actually split my vote across VI and VII. X gets a good shout in too.
@Yanina Final Fantasy VI is still my favorite!
@Dualmask Me too!
Number 6 on the GBA easily. My favourite and it's portable. Nuff said.
@Not_Soos FF7 really didn't age well graphically (outside of battles, the polygonal chibi characters really look bad IMO, but you get used to it), but it's still a great game that tells an incredible story. I'd say it's still the quintessential FF game, though the one that came just before it is my favorite title.
That would be number 5, my favorite Final Fantasy. The Job system in that game is great, the challenge level is passable, dungeons are great, world is fun to explore and it full of all kinds of secrets, and the soundtrack is amazing too. It's just all-around the best entry in the series I find.
The only unfortunate thing about it is that there's not really a "definitive" best version. Snes fantranslation is kind of shoddy and it's the most buggy version, PS1 version is riddled with all sorts of problems, GBA version has terrible music quality and the Steam port has those mobile-esque graphics.
I've not played them all, but I love VII, VIII, IX, X and XII. My favorite though... VI.
@Not_Soos The Remake is only the first 1/3rd of the story and it's heavily altered. It's not really a substitute for the original. Also, gameplay wise it isn't really a Final Fantasy game, if you're wanting to get into the series. It's an action RPG.
The Switch version is fine but VII is ugly as sin. I'd play VI before VII.
9 is the absolute best no contest. I'm playing through 7 for the first time currently (just got the airship) and even outside of the graphical aging, the story honestly kinda fails to captivate me like 9 did years ago and I kinda fail to see exactly why 7 is so beloved.
Don't get me wrong, 7 is still a great game, but it's absolutely not the 'greatest game of all time' as people tend to claim.
I haven't properly played any of the others yet; I have all the ones available on Switch and will get through them eventually, but for now the only ones I properly played are 7 and 9.
Honestly, I would love a modernized FF9. Doesn't even have to be a full-on remake like 7; just update the models, update the world's visuals, maybe update the pre-rendered backgrounds into full-blown 3D ones if possible. Kinda how OoT was updated into the 3DS version.
Then again I don't think 9 really needs it too much; for PS1 standards it was a great looking game.
Ummmm Final Fantasy III was on the SNES, not the DS
One of my favorite game series of all time. If I had to pick one, it would have to be FF7, but FF6 is very close. FF4 is the game that got me into the series, and FF5 (a game I originally played on an emulator with a fan translation) was also good. FF8 is the last game in the series I played (never finished), but it's still a good RPG. I have FF9 and FF10 on the Switch, and I want to play through each of them one day, but there are so many games out there.
Final Fantasy X!! My favourite game ever!
Also like a lot VII and IX. Didn't really enjoyed VIII or XII
You missed the best game: final fantasy III/VI SNES.
@NicheAbou really? They used the Android version for the port? On mobile it was great and half of the game I streamed on my TV and used a gamepad. But I thought for the switch version, they would beef it up a little....
@Spookles yeah, I wonder why they keep to decide which version we have to like... This poll is useless if we cannot choose the original instead of a port...
Best: 9
Favourite: 10
I actually played and beat 9 for the first time just recently and it's easily the best game in the franchise imo. I envy people who played this as a kid growing up.
It's a true toss up between V and IV for the best one on Nintendo consoles. FFV for the job system perfected and the replayability of it and FFVI for just being a master piece of multiple protagonist story telling (while maintain multiple ways to play).
After that point, they just started watering down the mechanics to the point that the game basically started playing itself while you wandered down corridors...
S tier = FFVII, FFX, FFIX
A tier = FFVIII, FFVI, FFXII
B tier = FFIV
C tier = FFV, FFIII
D tier = FFI, FFII
@Darknyht Have you tried X-2 best job system in the series, way less grindy than FFV.
@Tasuki FFIII is in NES and have a DS Remake. The "FFIII" in SNES (west) is in fact was FFVI in Japan
@graysoncharles I played through that version on the psp. It was an excellent remake.
@graysoncharles FFXV wasn't meant to be a mainline Final Fantasy. It was a spin-off game. Final Fantasy Versus XIII. That being said, that wasn't my point. This is a guy who has never played ANY Final Fantasy game and he's looking for a first one ever go get a feel for the series. I'm just saying the remake of FFVII isn't really going to be a good indicator of whether or not he likes the majority of the games in the series, particularly I-X. That's the point.
@Tasuki Final Fantasy VI was on the SNES. Final Fantasy III is an NES game with a remake on DS.
I've waited too long to finally say this: FFIX is the best FF on a Nintendo console
Final Fantasy VI is an unrivalled masterpiece. The sound track by Nobuo Uematsu elevates this game above the rest. The story, characters and villain solidify my opinion. Play this game (not the gba version) you owe it to yourself.
SquareEnix needs to remake FF6 with the Octopath Traveller engine! PLEASE!
missing:
final fantasy tactics advance
final fantasy V advance
final fantasy tactics A2
final fantasy xii revenant wings
final fantasy IV: the after years
final fantasy crystal chronicles
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King/my life as a dark lord
final fantasy i&ii advance
final fantasy iv advance
final fantasy II (iv) (snes)
final fantasyIII (VI) (snes)
final fantasy mystic quest
@Not_Soos I can't speak for FF as I'm a total noob in that regard, but if you're looking to expand your JRPG catalog, by all means buy Ocropath Traveler.
It's aesthetically amazing, the music is incredible, and the mechanics are as tight as a drum.
The only let down is the story and quests, which are pretty disjointed, but apart from that it's a very very good game.
i really liked the first FF game. that bite where i got the big sword and could wipeout half my enemy's health with one swipe of the sword. took me ages to get the sword though or make it stronger
FINAL FANTASY 6
FIGHT ME
@Expa0 The fan-retranslation of the SNES version of 4 come off as almost an unintentional parody.
I recall it was released just before the PS1 version gave the west the first official "uncut" version.
But it reads like a bunch of teenage fans (which they probably were at the time) probably saw how much of the game Nintendo's censorship policies on the original SNES release ACTUALLY affected, and decided they needed to punch up the vulgar material.
People talked about the William Shatner reference that got added back then, but no mention about how Rydia threatened to cut Cecil's d*** off. And it's like, "does that REALLY sound like something Square would've ACTUALLY wrote?"
VII and V are easily the top 2 FF games
Why is Crystal Chronicles (GC) not on this list? It was even mentioned in the article and is my favourite FF ;_;
Mystic Quest, Adventure and Legend I-II on game boy seem to be missing.
Also Crystal Chronicles.
And Theatrhythm
Anyway, six is the greatest.
My favourite was IX until I replayed VII, IX and X all over the past year. I still gave 10 stars to IX but X has overtaken it for me.
X has such a rich world, a really diverse cast of characters and my favourite battle and levelling systems. Even the occasionally dodgy voice acting doesn’t really bother me as I find it kind of charming.
Final Fantasy 6 (3 US) on a SNES hooked up to a CRT. Get off my lawn!
I have a sweet spot for X as it was the first one I beat after starting I to VII (sans II and V) but never really going much far, time later I went back and beat all of those as well and from the classic era IV and VI are my favorites, the gorgeous pixel art and soundtrack are very captivating.
Going into the modern ones VII aged awfully but hooked me enough to play the spin offs and watch the movie, I've yet to play VIII and IX but got both on PS Vita, XII is on my Switch wishlist. Haven't tried XIII and with how port happy Square Enix is I'm surprised they have yet to bring the trilogy to current consoles.
Now for the spin offs I loved Theatrhythm, it's so addictive that I clocked more than 100 hours between both releases and still play Curtain Call from time to time. Got World of Final Fantasy during the holiday sale this year, quite a solid classic gameplay with a decent lenght although it felt too easy and the story dragged by the end of the game. Crisis Core and Dissidia aren't on Nintendo consoles but both are very good, the former is pure wack plotwise but Zack is charismatic and the combat system while not spectacular is solid enough, the latter is undoubtedly the best iteration of the FF fighting games
TOP 3:
1. FF VI (SNES)
2. FF IV (SNES oder 3DS)
3. FF V (SNES)
4 FF III (3DS)
5. FFIX
@Deltath You do realize every game has different combat mechanics? You might like one better than the other but the franchise has always explored different systems. This is not like DQ where the gameplay has remained the same for over 30 years.
All good choices really (my pick would be VII or VI as my favorite)... except for XV, it's a terrible game.
VI is best by a country mile.
Where's the GBA version of 1&2? I wanted to vote for that one too. They're substantially different from the NES originals.
Both SNES FFs... whatever Roman numerals you wanna give 'em.
I want to vote for FFIII on SNES!
Yeah, this list is really half assed and bizarre. By far, the best versions of FF1 and 2 are on the GBA but we're only given the options for NES.
FF6 was far more iconic on the SNES and features better sound quality, yet we're only given the option for the GBA version.
Although I liked the DS remake of FFIV (with 3D graphics), purists might have preferred a top-down, 2D version of the game to cast their vote for.
Not having the original SNES 3/6 makes this entire poll moot.
The SNES era of Final Fantasy games were really spectacular. Whereas VII and VIII aged horribly over time, all the SNES games use remarkable sprite art and encapsulate the era perfectly.
@Kr96 If you think you've made some form of point, you didn't. I don't have any idea what you're talking about or how you think it relates to anything you think I'm trying to say.
Definitely FFVI (or FFIII back on Super NES). Largest cast of unique, memorable characters, amazing story, best villain ever in Kefka, epic end battle with 3 separate parties, awesome soundtrack. If ANY FF game needs the FFVII Remake treatment next its FFVI
@Roam85 Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is the only one I have legitimately played.
Personally, in order:
4,6,9,10,7 are the best!
Meh: 8,5,3,1
VI on the GBA kept my attention the longest, I'm slogging through VII currently. I still love the story but am not as big of a fan of the clunky PS1 graphics. still excited to get V on GBA at some point, and I have VIII, IX, X, X-2 and XII to play on Switch. I'll probably finish them as I lay dying in 60 years from now.
@arekdougy
5's battle system destroyed 4 and beat out 6.
I want to love the story, but held up to the other 2 is very mediocre.
Bravely Default has far better graphics, same (minus Brave/Default, which is a step up) battle system and the story is about on par so I recommend that over 5.
Weird poll, with its mix of current-gen ports and legacy releases. Even weirder is the inconsistency. For example, both FFV and FFVI were released on the Super Famicom and Game Boy Advance, but we get the Super Famicom release for one and the GBA re-release for the other.
Final Fantasy 6 was the pinnacle of FF games. 7 was the more mainstream but got a bit sillier and weird. FF8 was just dumb. I found FF9 a bit childish. FFXV played it on PS4 and it was terrible.
I enjoyed IV on the DS, VIII got stupid when you couldn't revisit the towns towards the end which was annoying, IX was great BUT the final bosses made no sense to me unless I missed something who were they?!?! For me always VII, was a bit crazy but so much fun, materia was awesome and KOTR was just the best, especially when you used it to Muller the Emerald Weapon. Great poll!
Final Fantasy VIII
Best = 8 , 9 , 10 , 10-2 , 12 , 3, 4
Worst = 13, 7
Banned = 15 , 7R
Not Played = 1 , 2 , 5 , 6 , 11 , 14 , 13-2 , LR 13
For me would be a tie between the ones that are real time combat as the turn base gets old after about 40 hours into the game despite their rich stories.
After Years and Revenant Wings tho
Only played 7 and 9. Loved both of them. I have X-X/2 in the ol BL. Just waiting for a good 70 free hours.
@Anti-Matter 15 is pretty bad huh? Its on my radar, what should I be on the lookout for?
Chrono Trigger will always be the best Final Fantasy
@LEGEND_MARIOID play them before forming an opinion my guy
@NintendoByNature how have you not played X get out!!!! best FF after VI!
@NintendoByNature
I didn't play FF 15 but after i found FF 15 have rated 18+ other Western games things as DLC, i instantly banned FF 15.
I do NOT even want to deal with any rated 18+ game stuffs even just only the costumes.
Beside, the more realistic looking on FF 15, the more i want to barf. 😒🤮
Theatrhythm: Curtain Call
fools its like this VI X VII IX VIII V III Original II
"i havent played X yet"
yep nintendo cronies at its finest
@NintendoPok lol I'm a newbie to Jrpgs and FF games is the only reason lol. I bought it earlier this year I just haven't gotten to it yet, but I will!
@Anti-Matter sounds good. Is that the picket edition one?
@NintendoByNature play Persona 5 it will change your life its on the PS3
@NintendoPok Eeek I don't have a ps3. Had a 4, and a 2.
@NintendoByNature
The PS4 version.
I don't even care with FF 15.
I pretended they don't exist.
@Anti-Matter got it thanks
only played 9 and 7 in that order, took me a while to get into 7 but it lives up to its reputation.
@BenAV Curtain Call’s among the 1000 hour club for me, right next to Rune Factory 4. God I loved the 3DS.
I know it's not mainline but 4 Heroes of Light! Best mainline is IX.
The biggest tragedy is that the numbered MMO's have never been ported to Nintendo platforms! A FFXIV port will surely be done with the Switch Pro
@nessisonett 500-odd hours for me. I probably would have needed an extra difficulty level to make it to 1000 as I started to lose motivation to play after getting All Critical on everything.
@NintendoByNature I’d say it’s best to play either VI, VII or IX first due to a combination of being great games and the jank being better going forwards than backwards. Ignore Mr Kiddygame when it comes to XV and VII Remake, there’s about 2 swear words and that’s it, not worth banning in the slightest. XV is flawed but relatively fun, with plenty content. People saying it’s as bad as XIII probably played it at launch before they fixed everything or just didn’t play it. I’d play VII before the Remake though, it’s not a strict remake and assumes knowledge of the original.
@BenAV The DLC was great for adding gameplay but the reason I played it so much was due to me losing my file thanks to a random bug. It’s still a pleasure to play though!
9 is almost unplayable... They dropped the encounter rate but didn't compensate with more experience per fight. Without the modifiers the game is just not good and honestly, it's aged worse than both 7 and 8 because of the 4 person parties making battles last an eternity. I'd probably choose 6, 8, or 12 assuming the 8 port is okay.
@Ulysses I'd take an 11 port all day. 11 is the greatest mmo ever imo.
@FredsBodyDouble I honestly can’t play IX without the x10 speed. Same as XII with the speed up, you don’t miss anything important it’s just a great QOL feature.
FF VII is, in my opinion, the best game ever made (followed closely by BotW, for very different reasons). I think that says it all. Perfect in pretty much every way.
FF IX and X are not very far away, though, great games as well. VIII is also a good game, like IV, but not that amazing. I don't like VI (I think I played it too late, unfortunately, because it hasn't aged well), and I still have to play XII.
Where's Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon at?
@nessisonett sorry If I was a bit confusing. I have only played 7 and 9 and loved both. X and X2 are in my backlog and I was eyeing 15.
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a look when I get the spare Change and time.
IV is hands down my favorite. I love III, X and X-2 as well. Never was a fan of VII or VIII, I never finished them. I haven't played the others.
I'd say Final Fantasy VII for me, although I haven't played IX yet and I think that would give VII a run for it's money.
My second favourite is XII, although I played the PS2 version. The Zodiac Age is sitting in my backlog. X in third place.
FF9 is hands down the best FF ever and the last great one before the series went to crap. My favorite game of all time and in my opinion the pinnacle of all JRPGs. VIII is my other favorite.
Why choose the worst version of Final Fantasy 6 to include in the poll? That is mind boggling.
These were all pretty much 9s and 10s on release, which would make a very dull poll. I’ve scaled the results Based on FF only.
But where is Final Fantasy III (VI) on SNES. Hands down my favourite
Missing FFTA and FFT A2: Grimoires of the Rift. Oh, and FFXII: Revenant Wings.
VI but not the GBA version.
The soundtrack sounds awful on GBA.
SNES all the way.
It still upsets me there is no "definitive" version of VI that doesn't have issues.
It not even close: The Zodiac Age!!
VIII, IX and X were the pinnacle of the series. Then it went downhill.
Mystic Quest: Final Fantasy for the SNES. Best RPG EVER!!!!
ok not really.
VI/III on the SNES by a long shot.
For handhelds though the GBA version of V is the best version of the game.
I'm kind of irritated that World of Fanil Fantasy is not on that list. That game is absolutely fantastic! And don't let the chibi artstyle fool you. The story gets REALLY dark towards the end.
@mazzel yep. Every subsequent port was based on the Android version (you can actually tell because each port after it specifically says you can't use emojis when you're naming a character, even when it's on a platform that doesn't support emojis)
AustinSV did an amazing video running through each of the ports of FF9 and the various differences they have. It's actually a great watch and his videos that outline differences in ports of games are insanely well researched.
FFV is so good. It should definitely be the next one to get the remake treatment.
It’s strange for an Anglophone website to list the NES version of FFII and the SNES version of FFV, as the majority of users won’t have been able to play those versions.
With that said, my top five are FFV (the job system perfected), FFVI (a wonderful story and ensemble cast, with a great mixture of defined roles and characters customization via Espers), FFVII (one of the most atmospheric video games ever, though poor translation hurts many of its story twists), FFX (perhaps the best world-building in the series and great tactical combat, though the Blitzball minigame isn’t my thing) and FFXII (wonderful story, voice acting, and battle system).
The poll says "Best Final Fantasy Game on a Nintendo system" but looking at the options, you could almost get away with just saying "Best mainline Final Fantasy game" as there are only a small handful that aren't listed here (and half of those are MMO's).
As for me, VI is still my favourite, followed by X and XII. So far, only VIII and IX (and maybe VII Remake if that counts) have come close to changing that, but at the moment, those are my current favourites.
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon.
How can people praise IX on Switch? It's a terrible port. Bad fps, battle takes 10 seconds to load, the already blurry ps1 graphic looks even worse on Switch.
I dont care if its considered 'baby's first FF', but where the heck is FF Mystic Quest?
Its the only FF I've ever completed, the only FF game I even care about, and the music was amazing!
I regret not buying it on the Wii eShop before they took it down from the Wii U.
Um... Final fantasy III (SNES)... 6 in Japan of course, but give me that over the GBA and tiny speakers version! In Kefka we trust!
After Final Fantasy finally was released from the PlayStation exclusivity, I was able to play 12, 10, 9, and 7 in that order on the Switch.
Additionally, I have previously played 3 and 4 remakes on the NDS.
Final Fantasy 7 has definitely impressed me the most, though I have yet to play FF6 which is a pretty significant omission.
@NintendoByNature 5 is amazeballs dont worry youll play it. persona 4 is on the PS2 and steam!
XII for me. I played the original when it came out. It was fine. But the improvements made later (and it's the switch version we're talking about here) make it one of the best RPGs ever.
Somehow you've managed to select the worst version of every single Final Fantasy.
I mean, why go with 3 on DS but 1 and 2 still on NES? I guessed because 3 NES only came out in Japan. But then you still select 5 on SNES, also Japan only. But then you still select 6 on GBA, somehow?! It's almost intentionally selecting the worst versions of those games to make the results more unique and weird. 5 is easily the best on GBA, and that's without considering the fact that the SNES one was JP only (which seems to have been a factor in choosing which versions of the three first ones to take). Oh wait, 2 is JP only too, and the NES version is famously quite bad. You still go for that one somehow. Then you somehow don't go with the earliest version of 3 and 6, when going with the earliest version was also kind of a thing? It just makes no sense. 6 got most affected by being ported to GBA, out of 4 5 and 6, so I guess it was another attempt at making people select what they find the "worse version."
@Dr_Corndog I feel they want to influence poll results based on that, to create a more "unexpected" result. Strangest bit is that choosing FF5 GBA but FF6 SNES would have actually made sense, as FF5's SNES version was only released in Japan.
@Roam85 Adventure and Legend aren't Final Fantasy games. Not sure about Mystic Quest US.
@Not_Soos The remake of FF7 is a good game, but it fails to capture what the original tried to convey. I certainly recommend playing both, but if you go with one, pick the original.
@Apportal you can go wrong with FF8 Remastered tho ....where is Squall?
IX and X get my votes.
IX was the peak of classic Final Fantasy for me - a world map, graphics that have aged pretty well, representations of classes like Black Mage, Warrior, Thief etc, and brilliant fantasy story with loveable characters.
X on the other hand was the most modern game in the series I truly loved before it started going more action based among other things. The combat is my favourite in the series, the additional voice acting brought characters to life and I love the story. Blitzball is also the most fleshed out minigame in FF, to the point it's almost a game in itself.
@Wargoose Yes I played it on PS2 when it released. A short summary would be “J-Pop magical girl team saves the world via costume changes”. It had the job system, but everything else about the game just makes me cringe now.
FFX wasn’t bad but it also was largely a very long corridor from start to finish. It was also the game when I started to see how much FInal Fantasy’s plot centered depended bad “melodrama”. Don’t get me wrong, that runs deep all the way back to the second game. It is just it wore thin by X.
I think that is why V might edge out VI. The game doesn’t have enough room for all the over melodrama that Square loves to pile into their more story centered entries.
@Thirteen1355 they were in the states at the time of release.
As for mystic quest, while mostly a sequel to the Legend/SaGa series gameplay wise, it has only gone by Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest in the states, Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest in Japan, and Mystic Quest in PAL regions.
I've only played the North American SNES version of IV (II) on the Wii Virtual Console, which is apparently very different from the DS remake, so no votes from me.
Gotta be ff7 its a absolute classic.
IX gets so much praise, but i have to say, it's one of the only entry in the series i haven't played! I'll have to pick it up next time it's on sale.
That being said i genuinely enjoy almost all of them, they each have their own charm.
I have high hopes for FF18.
I like the 7th and 9th, and LOVE the 4th, but the best seem to be every 6th.
If there will ever be only one remake, let it be FF6.
@NintendoPok I played the un-remastered versions back in the day but didn't really enthusiastically wish to re-visit them remastered or unremastered in 2019 or 2020 tbh with you (8 and 9). So that would tell it's own story I guess.
Sifting through my Swiss cheese memories, I actually was engulfed most by FF VI Advance back in the day.
@LEGEND_MARIOID VI is on the SNES mini Best FF
Just a note that I've switched out FF5 for FF5 Advance in the list (see the update at the top for more details). As pointed out by a few people, it makes more sense to have that version.
I'd like to point out that instead of playing FFXV, everyone should just watch Conan O'Brien and Elijah Wood playing it. Hilarious.
Does anyone else experience major load times when playing Final Fantasy 9 from the eShop? I love this game but some loading screens for battles take over 15 seconds sometimes. It's also froze on me a couple of times and makes me anxious about randomly doing it again. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times but I think it's just a bad port which is a shame.
@Yas Beacause it is following the alphabetical order of Roman numeral.
@Gus_Campos A bit late to the party, but... thanks.
