Geno's Mii Fighter costume made a return to the Smash Bros. series this week, and although it's a bit of a letdown for some - as we've already said this weekend, it's arguably better than nothing.
To acknowledge the return of this outfit, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai has now shared one of his photos, which is seemingly a nod to the Super Famicom title, Super Mario RPG - the game Geno originally appeared in.
GoNintendo does a good job explaining what all the fuss is about (below is the original Super Nintendo scene):
"you can see Mario, Bowser, and Genu facing off against the Final Smash of Sephiroth. This image is a direct reference to Super Mario RPG, as it features three characters you can have in your party. Sephiroth's inclusion is a nod to Culex, a hidden boss in Super Mario RPG that was meant as a nod to the Final Fantasy series."
Of course, there were mixed reactions to the above tweet from Smash Bros. fans:
Regardless of what you might think about this photo, it's clear Sakurai knows his stuff when it comes to classic game releases. How are you feeling about Geno returning as a Mii Fighter costume? Share your thoughts down below.

Geno is cool and all, but his fans really over exaggerate his recognisability and relevance.
This is me eyeing sakuria right now.
If i may choose between geno or sephiroth, then sephiroth it is. What an amazing character.
I hope the next character blows us away as well.
@The-Chosen-one Its going to be tom nook. JK.
Normal people: "cool!"
People who have too much time on their hands: "boo hoo Nintendo bad let's riot".
@Snatcher
Hahaha.
With the same cutscene as sephiroth "now i will bring smash desprair"
"At the end of the day Nintendo is full of business men and devs, not gamers"
Geez, talk about ungratefulness. Don't even know why you included that one
Imagine if Square made a proper sequel to Mario RPG on Switch. IMAGINE.
This only adds up to my theory that Sakurai would like to give the fanbase what they want but he can't because it's not up to him to decide the DLC. People say Byleth was an ad for Three Houses, just try to imagine yourself from the point of view of one of the Nintendo suits: why put Geno? Can we sell Geno? Can we sell Super Mario RPG?
Unfortunately, I don't think so
I'm okay with him being a Mii fighter. I just wish they gave him the Sans/Cuphead/Vaultboy/Bomberman treatment. I hate the Mii faces and breaks the whole point
Honestly I still don't even know why people want Geno so much. He's cool and all but he's not all that special and getting so disappointed over him not being included is quite the overreaction if you ask me. I'd say be glad he's a Mii costume at least, there's still plenty of characters who can't even say that much. Even though I did think he'd get the deluxe costume treatment like Sans and a few others did.
These “gamers” trying to make out that Geno is so much bigger than he actually is is just sad.
I understand that Geno has his loyal fans, but they greatly overexaggerate how popular he is and how amazing his Inclusion in Smash would be.
He’s just a plank of wood guys, calm down, he’s not a hype beast and not that great of a moveset material.
I'd rather have Birdo. He/she isn't even in Mario Kart anymore.
People who don't understand the importance of Geno are probably 12 years old.
@Sandro89 Please can you explain his importance then?
@Sandro89 I'm over 12 years old and played Super Mario RPG numerous times since it came out in 1996, and I don't understand why people think he deserves to get into Smash, even compared to Mallow
To be honest, if I did pick either one, I would feel Mallow was better suited to be in Smash.
But, I don't think either one deserves to be in Smash as a full playable rep.
There are still other Mario characters who have not been made playable characters who are more important to the franchise as a whole such as Toad, Captain Toad, Waluigi, and Paper Mario.
The last one could easily fill the niche of "RPG Representative" for the Mario series.
Geno is little more than a footnote in Mario's history, Square Enix's history, and Nintendo's history who has become popular because a bunch of fanboys have hopped on a bandwagon to get him in.
This is not even the same case as it was for Ridley or King K. Rool who were popular and recurring villains of their franchises.
Super Mario RPG is a single game that got displaced by the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games, and Geno is just a party member in the game, who while important to the story, has no context outside of his own game.
He's not important, he's just got a massive bandwagon of followers who want him in.
@Bobb
That makes perfect sense. However, it also doesn’t jive with past DLC characters.
Why was Banjo included? How can Nintendo sell Banjo?
Why was Joker included? How could Nintendo sell Joker in early 2019? Was the plan for Joker to sell copies of Persona Q2 later that year on 3DS? That seems unlikely. Maybe they were hoping Joker’s name recognition would sell DLC packs? That’s possible, but Joker is from a very niche series (as is Terry Bogard).
So yeah, I get that Geno isn’t sellable compared to Byleth, but a lot of past DLC characters also weren’t sellable compared to Byleth.
@Caryslan
Is the bandwagon even that massive or is it just a very, very vocal minority? My guess is the latter.
I played Super Mario RPG when it first came out in 1996 and loved it and I totally agree that Geno isn’t a good choice for a DLC character.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Well, unless you count Mario Kart Tour, anyway. Which, if nothing else, at least shows they're still thinking about Birdo being in Mario Kart. I've got a feeling Birdo will show up again in Mario Kart 9.
@Yosher Oh I didn't know she was in that! That's awesome. It seems to have a much better character selection than 8. I always wanted her to show up in a 3D Mario game as a boss too.
I like Geno and I like Super Mario RPG but all the people I know IRL do not even know who this guy is and he exists in one title alone. BTW we are all over the age of 30. I think a costume is honestly generous and they should be hyped it's even an option. He's a cool character and it's a very cool game I'd love to see brought back on the SNES app. However, as gaming icons go, Sephiroth and FF7 for jrpgs has a bigger mark in the industry. I feel like there's a constant trend to hope for characters that gather just a enough support to have a cult following of demanders which then just attracts bandwagoners and it snowballs. I think it's detached from the reality of the situation, personally.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Unfortunately the only reason Mario Kart Tour has a better character selection than 8 is because it uses (almost) all of the characters already in 8 (the most notable missing characters being the non-Mario characters), and introduces a lot of new characters/variants simply because it gives people more reason to spend money on its gambling mechanic.
So in other words, Mario Kart Tour's roster is great almost solely for the $$$.
I think for me I wanted him so badly because of the nostalgia of that specific era of my childhood. I never would have expected him, except all the talk about him over the last few decades, how he "almost made it into Smash" before, etc.
Now, more than the character, I would have just loved a stage and music based off Mario RPG. I was devastated when I found out the Forest Maze music from the trailer isn't making it into the game.
@Caryslan If there's one more Mario rep, I think Toad is the most deserving of a spot, but he's occupied as a move for Peach and Daisy. So Captain Toad it (hopefully) is.
Put mario rpg on the snes app!!!
I think that "Geno deserves to be in because he's popular" isn't the point - it's that he's obscure. He's only been in one game (not counting Superstar Saga cameo) and he's unique in that he came from a collaboration between two companies 25 years ago. Plus his move set could've been great. I'm excited for Sephiroth too, but Geno has more relevancy when it comes to Nintendo and their history. Whether or not we like Super Mario RPG is irrelevant.
I miss having obscure Smash Bros characters. It's neat to have Sephiroth murder history's greatest platforming mascots, but I wish Smash could highlight something I didn't already know about.
@Jmjfrank Chrom is still a part of Robin's Final Smash even though he's a playable fighter, so there's no reason Toad can't remain a part of Peach's moveset while being a playable fighter himself.
I think Captain Toad is the best way to go, especially since he can still reference the main Toad's move set as well.
When I played SMRPG, Geno kinda gave off proto-Shadow the Hedgehog vibes. Likes, "baby's first edgy character" but lighter in tone.
I went with Bowser and Peach as my permanent partners
@Entrr_username People are allowed to be disappointed dude.
Sakurai makes a reference to a hidden boss in a 24 years old niche turn based game that didn't even get a global release
"Oh wow you're just a business man, not a gamer"
Now we know why aliens don't want to talk to us.
@Grot the jeep from jackal ftw!
I love how 80% of Geno fans don't even realize what the picture is referencing exactly and are just bothered they showed the costume, goes to show how many actually played Mario RPG.
For the love of God, I know this doesn’t mean anything but boy does it make me wish Super Mario RPG would get a SNES online release or something. Hell, let Square port it with the same QoL improvements that they’ve added to their Final Fantasy rereleases. Or just throw it on the eShop with zero improvements, a $9.99 or $14.99 price tag and take it off on March 31st. I don’t even care at this point, I just want a simple and convenient way to play the dang thing
Frankly, I don't care who gets the playable character treatment, as long as they're fun to play and Sakurai doesn't work himself to the bone to implement them.
Also, there are no set of rules to getting into smash. The only known guideline is that you have to have originated from a video game. Everything is free game, otherwise!
Geno is the first non-mario brother you play as in a game with the Mario name. His name is also an Italian stereotypical name, like Mario's. He's the last Smashbro. Or WAH is.
I love Mario RPG, but we need something extra cool next. Such as a Metroid that can evolve into different forms, like they did on SR388.
I gave up on Geno, but I kinda wished SOME Mario RPG character got in. I mean, a lot of them are basically one-time characters, but still. Fawful, Dementio, Vivian, or one of the other partners from the first two games.
Even a Mr. L outfit for Luigi, or whatever the brainwashed Bowser was called in the original Mario and Luigi. (I forget, lol)
I feel like Nintendo hates all the original characters in the Mario RPGs. lol
@Munchlax at this point we have Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Pokemon, Persona, and Fire Emblem reps. Smash has already done enough in terms of representing iconic JRPGs with several characters. Adding Geno is just a played out meme at this point, most people outside of internet bubbles wouldn't even appreciate him anyways.
The biggest problem with Super Mario RPG ist that it originally wasn't released in half of the world. It was not released in the continents Europe and Australia. And when it finally released globally 12 years later as a Wii Virtual Console download, it didn't have that much of an impact anymore. It was English-only, so again the audience was limited by a language barrier. And there were 3 Paper Mario's already out by then and they were all better.
@MarcelM Ya like if the ydd not do the mii face thing I probably would have been more happyer then I i'm now.
I get why people are disappointed, but I’m not totally convinced he’s out of the running. His costume was ported from Sm4sh with only a few visual tweaks, suggesting little time was put into it. If they’d upgraded it to be like Cuphead or Sans, then I’d be worried something better wasn’t coming. Given that costumes can exist of playable fighters (ie Link, Samus, Meta Knight), this doesn’t invalidate his chances entirely.
Smash fans do whatever they can to weed out potential characters since the wishlist is so vast, which makes sense—but I feel it does Sakurai a disservice. Remember when Min Min was impossible to implement? Little Mac was doomed to be an Assist Trophy after Brawl. Samurai said point-blank that Ridley was impossible. Heck, aren’t people speculating that Waluigi will be announced? Smash Bros. character rules are frequently broken.
I'd want Geno to be added, if only because a proper inclusion of Geno Whirl would result in him being immediately banned and I shamelessly enjoy Smash drama. And maybe so people could shut up about him finally. He was worthless in Super Mario RPG once Bowser joined anyway, with too low of defense and specials that aren't worth the high costs. And unlike Mallow he has zero character development past his introduction.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
If they drop a bomb like that, a sequel to mario rpg. My heart will stop for a minute lol.
@Bobb They're done selling King K. Rool but he still got in.
@Entrr_username
It's funny because the only reason why Joker is in Smash is because Sakurai likes P5.
But sure, yeah. The devs don't play games.
Something is more then nothong right? And I think the fighters should be well known gaming figures, not from an obscure "japan only"game for the longest time. I played the rom as a kid like 20 years ago and loved it, but not everyone has that history woth that character. I think many more have that with Sephiroth (can't wait to play him btw).
@Clyde_Radcliffe You know, I never thought Pokémon Snap would get a sequel. Anything can happen.
@Munchlax
Spoiler alert, he’s not important.
People are so unbelievably whiny. "At the end of the day Nintendo is full of business men and devs, not GAMERS", Jesus Christ. Grow up.
"At the end of the day Nintendo is full of business men and devs, not gamers"
Full-fledged gamer here, been playing games for years and mainly Nintendo games to boot. 1) I didn't even know who Geno was until people started whining about him being in Smash in the first place. 2) I doubt the majority of gamers -and even Smash fans overall- care if Geno is in Smash or not. He's just not interesting enough when you put him next to Sephiroth. And sure, while Minecraft Steve is far from being interesting (I agree with you) his game is still HUGE. And he's in Smash to represent that. Geno on the other hand... well, his game isn't huge and neither is he. So, its not a surprise he's in. I dont know whats so hard to understand when Sora still hasn't been added and he's arguably much bigger then Geno.
its a shame nintendo has the last word on who gets in as a fighter, sakurai seems like he'd be so much more hands-on with the game and its community if he could
prior to the latest announcement of Mii costumes, I didn’t even know who Geno was. then again, I’ve never been into RPG’s even if the Mario franchise is involved 🤷♂️
@Munchlax i never seen a post with so many likes
@Snatcher I remember Sakurai saying that Geno is one of his favorites. However, it is not entirely up to him of who goes in or not. ...............Yet, Sephiroth is way cooler.
@Grot Toba can get in after Eggman or Ryu Hyabusha.
People need to get over it
"Geno's Mii Fighter costume made a return to the Smash Bros. series this week, and although it's a bit of a letdown for some - as we've already said this weekend, it's arguably better than nothing."
Is it? Not a Geno fan myself, but I'd rather Lloyd not be featured at all than reappear with his terrible Mii Costume.
Once upon a time, Smash Bros was a history lesson on video games that helped introduce people to games they wouldn't normally be acquainted with. Yeah, there's still the spirits, sure. But a long time ago, there were playable characters like Ness from a commercial failure called Earthbound, and Marth and Roy from a series called Fire Emblem that wasn't even released in the West. Heck, there was even the Ice Climbers from an old arcade game and Mr. Game and Watch from an obsolete handheld. R.O.B.? But now it's left the Nintendo history pretense behind in favor of current era advertisement characters, and people are understandably unhappy about it. Geno is important. Super Mario RPG is important. The fact that you personally aren't familiar with it just goes to show how you could benefit from Smash including a "historical" character like Geno. Look at what happened with Fire Emblem after Melee. People are right to be frustrated.
Ah, so the internet is in one of those, "My opinion of a character is superior to yours," moods again?
