Earlier this week, Nintendo gave fans a two-minute look at the new Bowser's Fury add-on in the Switch version of Super Mario 3D World. Since then, we've all been wondering why Bowser is so mad.
Nintendo's UK website has now revealed how he's actually been tainted by a "mysterious black goop" which requires Mario and his unlikely companion (Bowser Jr.) to travel across a series of islands on Lake Lapcat.
Together, they must collect the Cat Shines, harness the power of them and stop this new "terrifying" form of Bowser.
Something bad has happened to Bowser. He’s been tainted by a mysterious black goop, turning him into a humongous monster bent on total destruction!
It’s up to Mario and an unlikely companion to travel across a series of islands on Lake Lapcat, collect the mysterious Cat Shines by completing different platforming challenges, and harness their power to stop the terrifying Fury Bowser.
With his papa transformed, Bowser Jr.’s only hope to save his dad lies with his greatest enemy. Piloting his Koopa Clown Car, the young prince joins Mario on his quest, copying all of his moves, helping him take out enemies, and uncovering power-ups and other secrets that’ll help you out.
Pass a Joy-Con to a friend and play in local co-op, with one player taking control of the little tyke directly to assist in your hunt for the Cat Shines.
As you play through this add-on content, you'll need to keep an eye on the "Fury Sun". When the weather changes - you better watch out!
As you search high and low for the Cat Shines, the evil-looking Fury Sun will slowly rise out of the lake, near the island that you’re currently on.
When the weather suddenly changes from sunny to stormy, it’s time to get a move on, as Fury Bowser’s almost there! Once he emerges from the Fury Sun, he’ll summon meteors from the sky and fire devasting fiery beams at you – so take cover!
If you've collected all the Cat Shines, you'll be able to take on Bowser as Giga Cat Mario:
While you can wait out the devastation, you aren’t entirely helpless. If you’ve collected five Cat Shines on an island, it’s time to activate the awesome power of the Giga Bell! This gargantuan Super Bell transforms Mario into Giga Cat Mario, meaning he can fight Fury Bowser in a truly titanic tussle.
Defeat Fury Bowser in your massive feline form and he’ll be sent flying back into the water, unlocking new islands for you to explore. Don’t spend too long celebrating your victory, as he’ll be back...
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Will arrive next month on 12 February 2021.

It’s looks so so good - I just want to know how long it is now. I’m hoping there’s a good few hours there..
So you defeat Bowser on every single island? Please please please don’t be a never ending mode á la Mario Bros, I’d much prefer an actual designed mode with an ending. I’m going to be really disappointed if it’s never ending generated islands.
Bowser Jr : "Hey!" "Listen!" "Watch out!"
@nessisonett "Never ending generated islands" would actually be really interesting. I would say a first from Nintendo in a Mario 3D game. Right?
Of course this will have an ending, storywise. Otherwise, they wouldn't bother to give the back story about Bowser Jr. and how his greatest enemy (Mario) has to help him.
@andykara2003 This. If it isn’t at least 50% of the play time of the original, then it’s a pass for me and not worth double dipping. If they’ve truly built a proper sequel or at least a very substantial add-on, then I’m all in.
Can't say I'll double dip but if they sold it separately for the right price I'll be all in
@nessisonett it definitely won’t be...I’d imagine 4-5 islands, 6 if were lucky. A final showdown with Bowser, then a final showdown with the real baddie, if one will dream a possible playable Bowser section.
I'm sold. Bring it on!
They should start making mario games similer to this, we all know it starts like this, there testing the waters if people like 3d mario games that play like this they might make games closer to it later. But lets put that aside, This looks like a good first playthrough can't wait for this game, might not be able to buy it day one.
This is really cool, and I am quite sure I'll enjoy the hell out of it (alongside the awesome 3D World which is worth the double dip on its own IMO) but I really wish we were getting a cleaned up and 60fps version of 3D Land instead of it.
Oh well!
Mysterious goop?
Bowser Jr having huge role and his Sunshine paintbrush?
Island focused?
It said somewhere the island is dark and you have to light it up?
Collecting SHINES?
Am I the only one starting to wonder if this was originally going to be a Mario Sunshine sequel?
EDIT: Remember in Sunshine the black goop turned regular creatures into out of control monsters in that too?! Like the Blooper where you had to pull his nose and legs off.
This seems much more up my street than Odyssey. I like little levels over open worlds, and I like cats too.
I hope Boswer Jr. Is playable in the main game! Would be awesome to have a 6th character.
@Snatcher I love the look of this and am going to enjoy the hell out of it, but I wouldn’t want 3D Mario games to continue the locked 8-way control scheme.
@andykara2003 Not all of them Its hard to say what I mean like I mean 2d 3d mario games like 3d land and world.
Bowser Jr is Tails.
He flies and he copies your moves as ai. He’s Tails.
@Clyde_Radcliffe At the very least Koizumi is trying to make cheeky homages to his older work.
Hmm still not exactly sold on this, so much about this just comes off as a short little 2 player coop adventure. I would really like to know how long it is and how good it is solo. I know that was always a weakness for 3D World, it was definitely designed to work in multiplayer to the point where the single player suffered. NSMB was the same way on the Wii and Wii U, the DS original was designed around being a solo game and always worked better as one. Same deal with 3D Land, it was always meant to be solo game and worked better than 3D World as one.
@JayJ The game thrived as a multiplayer title and as you said it was clearly built for it even down to the crown obtained when you get the most points per level. I was actually really excited for this mode when it was announced, but it seems too lacking content wise for me to double dip. The whole 2 player co-op in a completely 4 player game is also an odd choice to go with that puts me off buying it. I guess I was expecting more along the lines of Champions road but it seems more like we’re getting Captain toad.
Sounds awesome. I wonder if there’s a battle with the creator of the black goop after bowser is saved 🤔
This does look more like a Mario Odyssey add-on than a 3D World add-on right?
It’s a shame that travelling across Lake Lapcat is the closest we’re going to get to Wave Race on the Switch...
Is Fury Sun a throwback to Angry Sun from Mario 3?
Looking forward to this. I skipped the WiiU, so every game from it is new to me.
@Clyde_Radcliffe One thing is that it's the replica brush he got in games later than Sunshine. The one in Sunshine had the E.Gadd logo on it, but this one has Bower Jr.'s face
@sandman89 Yes, there is a final boss in Bowser's Fury and it's very difficult. I never want to battle Giga Gooper Blooper ever again. Game was only roughly 3 hours btw
If Bowser's Fury will be that short, they better give it some replay value to make the double dip worth it. Higher difficulty levels and randomly generated levels would be nice.
Ok I’m sold now. This mode sounds great! I’m guessing it will be like an extra 2-3 hours of content
Weird goop, Bowser Jr, Islands, cat shines?
...so it's the cat-themed sequel to Sunshine?
What!? Everything is cat themed?! SOLD!
@Clyde_Radcliffe,
I think it was originally odyssey dlc, there were rumors last year of Isle Delfino dlc.
@Northwind I like that. Good find
Loved the Wii U super Mario 3D world, but I’ll have to wait a while and purchase this under a modest discount before double dipping to feel worth it. I’ll have to see how beefy Bowsers Fury portion is on the new game. That’s been my personal policy on all rehashed Switch games I purchased on previous consoles
Damn they got me. I had no intentions of getting this but now I have no choice.
After taking on Calamity Bowser, I expect to take on Calamity Dedede in the next Kirby game and Calamity Mother Brain in Metroid Prime 4.
@Whalehome Me too, very excited!
First of all, this looks awesome.
Secondly, those of you who keep judging this on terms of '$60 to double dip', no, you seem to forget that most people haven't played this game before and for them it's definitely not double dipping. If you already have the Wii U version there's no need for you to buy this, I wouldn't. Nintendo's goal here is not for everyone to re-buy their game, it's to make profit from everyone who never got to play it. For the vast majority of people, this is in fact a NEW game.
God, I'm excited about this. This feels like we'll finally get somewhere close to the freedom of 64, even if the islands are still laid out in a linear order. This is the most excited I've ever been about a mario game, so I hope that its what they're making it out to be.
I barely played 3D World on the Wii U, so this is definitely something I'm looking forward to.
@JMR_Alden
I take it you've gotten a review copy of the game?
@NathanTheAsian Yes sir, it was provided to my by my uncle who works at Nintendo.
@andykara2003 Exactly this. I put hundreds of hours in on the Wii U version. This will need to have 10+ hours of content to bring me back.
"Don’t spend too long celebrating your victory, as he’ll be back..."
Hasn't this been the case since 1985?
I kind of hope Bowser's Fury won't outstay its welcome. Something like 5h would be perfect if it constantly had new ideas, and never slowed down. 3D World is by far my favourite Mario game (well, not counting Mario Kart 8) so I'm getting this game mostly for that anyway.
I hope these repeating fights against gooped Bowser don't end up as horrible as the repetition with the Imprisoned in Skyward Sword...
Even though I am 100% completed this game on Wii U, I have a strong feeling my girlfriend will be wanting me to buy this one again on Nintendo Switch. She just loves her Mario games.
Anyone else but me got a feeling that Bowser’s Fury’s open-world, island-hopping layout is a test demo for the next main Mario game?
@Lordd_G could have said that about sunshine and they tried out Mario + gadgets and didn't use it again. So my theory is it's more of a chance to try new things without making an entire game.
I hope bowsers fury dosen't end up being a short little side story. I hope it is a medium length fun game
"If you've collected all the shines" vs "if you've collected five shines on an island"
@FlaviusFire If there aren’t enough Wii U players to actually matter, they should just release the game without any new content. Cheaper on their end and they can get it out faster. Adding just enough new content so that there’s an incentive to double dip but not nearly $80 worth (the asking price) is predatory and anti-consumer. Ideally they would release Bowser’s Fury as reasonably priced DLC for the Wii U or as a Switch eshop standalone title. It would take a few lines of code at most to do the latter, but forcibly bundling it as they’ve done is consistent with their recent behaviour (getting rid of directs and making fewer games than at any point in their history).
I think I'd pay $60 just to play this mode at this point... okay, maybe I wouldn't go that far but still. Can't wait, sounds awesome.
I just need Fawful to be behind the whole thing.
I originally had no interest in this, since I played the original. The recent video kind of sold me, and this description sounds even better.
Even if it's only, like, 4-5 hours of new content, I'm good with that. I woulda paid full price for 3D World again without it.
@BeefSanta I’m hoping too but I’m thinking 4-5 hours might be a little wishful.
@Incoherent1 what original? This is just an additional oroginal game, surelly to be pretty short.
Black goop. It's always mind controlling black goop.
Ganon moves into the Mario universe.
But seriously this is insane. It’s like Godzilla vs Kong or something but ones a cat. Shut up and take my money
Kind of wish they didn't put the final boss in this trailer...
Black goop, cat shines, jrs paintbrush. intentional or not im enjoying these small nudges at mario sunshine
@nessisonett
Don't think Bowser's Fury is going to have any procedural generation, though I'd definitely be interested if Nintendo ever developed a game like that.
@Clyde_Radcliffe or the game we wish Sunshine was.?
@JayJ it’s definitely going to be solo focused
@johnvboy weren’t those rumors debunked almost immediately?
@FlaviusFire that’s the case with most Wii U ports. This one is different because of Bowser’s Fury and the subtle changes they made in the base game (i.e. the characters move roughly 20% faster, online play, etc.). Imo, this is by far the Wii U port with the most effort put into it so far, and it’s by far worth the double dip for me. Also, I had the original, but the disc got slightly scratched and now the Wii U can’t read it. I haven’t played it in a good 5ish years, and I don’t remember much of it, so it’s going to be like a brand new game for me!
To all of you complaining, saying that it’s not worth the double dip, if it were Galaxy or Galaxy 2 getting this treatment instead of 3D world, I’m pretty sure that all of you, if not, most of you would double dip because it’s Galaxy
Bowser has been taken over by black goop?
Wasn’t expecting them to revisit the plot from Paper Mario Colour Splash..
@BeastMode44 Nah here they will always complain. They also complained about the 3D Collection. But mostly they are Pushsquare people that come here with fake Nintendohate.
I, for one, will be double dipping and loving every second of it.
@BeastMode44,
No sure but this add on does not seem like it belongs to Mario 3-D world, looks a lot more like odyssey DLC.
@Clyde_Radcliffe yea it reminds me of Mario 3d world with an Odyssey type level that has Sunshine mechanics. I think someone even said the way Mario collects the shine bells is the same animation for the moons in Odyssey.
Sounds ok. But what sort of length is this game.
Is it a decent length, or just a few hours to boost the sales of an older port. I guess a review might tell us.
@Incoherent1 IT wont be, the orinal had 10-20 hours, this one will be 2-4 guaranteed
@johnvboy The mechanics, physics, etc. are that of 3D Land/World's though.
Anyway, I was kinda hoping they'd add the classic take turns or tag team multiplayer for the open world Mario titles so we wouldn't have to swap controllers whenever the current player dies.
Was going to double dip anyway so this is a bonus for me. It's not often that I double dip but I make an exception for 3D World.
@Dethmunk I pre ordered it the day after it was announced, and I’m not regretting a single thing. And just because someone says that they’re not double dipping, doesn’t necessarily mean that they won’t. I’ve been playing 3D Land, and MAN I forgot how much I loved that game. Even if my 3D World disc wasn’t scratched and stuff, I probably wouldn’t play it anyway, since I’d want to wait for the Switch version, as I’d be tired out of 3D Land and World by that point, and what’s the point of playing it if I don’t want to? And besides, I have 3D Land to finish (I have 2 worlds left) and I just bought NSMB2, so I’m also playing through that (I’m on the final world). Both are severely underrated games imo. I’ve played every NSMB game except for Wii, and I’ve had fun with every single one (yes, including U Deluxe and Luigi U).
