Recently, we took a look at what we consider to be the sexiest consoles Nintendo has ever created. Team NL convened in our online office space to assemble a fine-looking shortlist which you lovely people have been voting on. We were very happy with that line up, although eagle-eyed readers may have noted one particularly curvy console missing from our shortlist: the Nintendo 64.
Be assured, dear reader, that its exclusion didn't come without heated discussion. While we're all in agreement that the console has some stellar software to its name, Team NL is divided as to the 64-bit machine's aesthetic value. Some of us believe it's up there with the loveliest hardware ever made, a sentiment only enhanced by the satisfying "KER-CHUNK" emitted when you place a cartridge in its slot or slam one of its many 'Pak' peripherals into the back of the controller. Other team members, however, can't see it was anything but a big bland 'toy', with primary coloured Fisher-Price pads and chunky, unsophisticated stylings. Different strokes.
Regardless of our own squabbling, we wanted to give the 64-bit machine its chance to shine, and give you the chance to vote on your favourite variant. After all, 2021 is the console's 25th anniversary and we're hoping Nintendo has a surprise or two in store to celebrate the system that took the console gaming world into the polygonal third dimension. Fingers crossed.
Before we get to the poll, though, let's remind ourselves of the main variants of the console that were available...
The Nintendo 64 console variants
In this brief round up we've excluded a couple of obscure editions that only launched in Japan. The website Console Variations has a handy and comprehensive list of each and every N64 ever made, so check that out if you're interested in the All Nippon Airlines version (essentially a bog-standard charcoal console with a sticker), the South Korean Hyundai Comboy variant (another regular version with a rebrand to get around an import ban at the time), or the infamous plug-and-play IQue from China.
The standard 'Charcoal' Nintendo 64
The original and the best? The standard console mixes straight lines with curved edges, a gentle hump along the front edge concealing the RAM expansion port, and subtle vents leading backwards to a recessed cartridge slot highlighted with light grey 'bay doors'. The controller ports carry the same colour with two sturdy pillar-feet framing the front end and keeping everything rock solid and symmetrical.
Its stylish and elegant — perhaps a little straight-laced, but it's got personality, too. The control pad might be divisive, but the console itself is a solid, lovely lump of plastic and metal.
The 'Funtastic' Series
The rainbow spectrum of transparent models that Nintendo produced a few years after the console's debut carried the 'Funtastic' label. Arguably, everybody that wanted an N64 had already bought one by the time they arrived, and this was a long time before incremental updates were a thing in the home console market.
Still, Nintendo was used to selling colour variants for its Game Boy lines, and it was refreshing to see its flagship home console follow Apple's lead (those colour options looked suspiciously similar to the stylish iMacs colour options of the era) and offer a range of colours for the console itself, not just the control pads.
Back in the day we we found it very tough to justify buying a second console just to have a different hue, although several of Team NL count one or two of these 'Funtastic' N64s in our collections nowadays.
Nintendo initially produced the following six colours in the series:
- Fire Orange / Sun Orange
- Grape Purple / Midnight Blue
- Ice Blue
- Jungle Green
- Smoke Black / Clear Black
- Watermelon Red / Fire Red
Two other two-tone variants were also available depending on your region, each with a clear white bottom and the top half taken from the Ice Blue or Watermelon Red lines respectively. The latter is particularly handsome if you can find an example where the white half hasn't started yellowing:
- Clear Blue
- Clear Red
There are a couple more colourful variants which we won't include here — again, see Console Variations for more details on the Japan-exclusive Daiei Hawks and JUSCO 30th Anniversary Edition two-tone consoles.
The Pikachu Nintendo 64s
A handful of Pikachu N64 consoles launched when Pokémania was in full swing. Each one featured a Pikachu embedded in the right side on the top, with the shape of the standard N64 seemingly stretched on the right side to accommodate the little yellow guy. His right foot was the reset button and his cheeks lit up red when you pushed the Poké Ball-shaped power button on the left.
The bottom half of the console (and its accompanying controller) was yellow, while the top half came in one of three colours; the West received the Dark Blue variant only, while Japanese gamers could choose from a Light Blue or Orange version.
On the one hand, the light-up cheeks and detailing goes above and beyond what we'd expect and we can't help but love it. However, mentally remove the Pokémon on the top and the console beneath is a bit of a lopsided mess. We're a little torn on it.
PAL regions got another Pokémon N64, too — the Battle Set console (see above). It's a standard N64 in terms of design (there's no Pikachu on this one), although it adds some graphics and borrows the colours of the Pikachu Dark Blue version (and flips the yellow half onto the top of the control pad).
The 'Gold' Nintendo 64
Finally, we come to arguably the pièce de résistance of the Nintendo 64 console canon: the gold model.
Never released in Europe, this lovely thing was a Toys "R" Us exclusive. Not much more to say, really; just look up there again, gaze upon its majesty. And pity us poor Europeans — the only gold we got a look at was a Limited Edition bundle containing a standard Charcoal N64 and a gold controller.
So, a gold pad that you had to buy an entire console to get your hands on. 'Rub-bish!', as we say around these parts.
So, we've briefly recapped the major variants, but which is your absolute favourite? Scroll down and let us know in the poll below:
Can you imagine a Nintendo 64 Classic Mini available in every one of these Funtastic colours?...
While we head off to have ourselves a little 'moment', feel free to let us know below which N64(s) you have in your retro collection.

Always liked the Charcoal, but Gold wins out for me; especially with either GOLDENEYE or a gold OoT cartridge plopped in.
Honestly, I like them all.
The Nintendo 64 (in all its forms) always stirs up great memories.
Picked Grape Purple, though I only had the controller. My system was Jungle Green because my mom bought it from a catalog and they sent a random color.
For me it will always be the standard Charcoal. I'll never forget the first picture I saw in a gaming magazine of the elusive coming soon "Ultra 64". It was the most amazing piece of technology I ever saw at the time.
That set with a jungle green N64 and a yellow DK64 cartridge looks pretty cool.
As a kid I loved the jungle green. Now I really love those two tone japan only ones. I’m happy with my charcoal one I own tho
It's all about FIRE ORANGE, with mystic ninja magic fire blasts coming out the sides. Or just orange paint. I'll see myself out, now. Black is good too, for obfuscation.
N64 CLASSIC EDITIONS NINJA APPROVED
The standard.
Lol i forgot about the expansion pack ,🤣🤣 man man, the times.
Honestly I love the fact that there were so many options for different color consoles and controllers. I wish Nintendo would do that today. Not just special editions for specific games, but simple color variety.
I am distinctly sick of bland black rectangles and squares.
I’ve got a fried jungle green console in the basement
Other than the OG gray, Jungle Green is by far the best. Anyone who thinks otherwise is wrong.
Yes Dreamcast controllers and vmus went the same way, but now a days the coloured transparent models have a lower resale than originals
Got the purple N64 with Super Mario and Zelda - Ocarina of Time at christmas 1998... when i was 10 years old.
Good Memories!!
I have a 🍉 and a Jungle Green. There's one or two other colours I'd be happy to have, but two N64s feels enough right now.
I wanted the jungle green as a kid but the charcoal and I are still chugging along.
If I bought a second one though I would get a pikachu one.
@Ganner Same here. Btw, would this be the exact magazine where you first saw it, https://archive.org/details/GamePro_Issue_079_February_1996/page/n21/mode/2up ? Because it certainly was my first glimpse of it, way back in the day. Love at first sight
@Lord
2 years later i got my Dreamcast! Still love it and have it! With Mouse, keyboard and VGA cable to play it on a Monitor etc.. and like 100 games+, which i downloaded from internet... It was just to easy... No Copy Protection... But i bought the best games instead of downloading, 40 DC games vs 100+ downloaded games . Awesome time!
I was never big into the N64 and never had one, so my pick is pure personal preference. I've always liked the orange Pikachu model.
I got the OG charcoal N64 the x-mas it came out since it was the only option however I got the green controller. Years later when I saw the Jungle green one I wanted it so badly but couldn't justify getting it just for the color. Then my best friend at the time bought it on a lark - was so jealous! Even to this day I will not get a new system just because of color - it needs to have some kind of improvement to justify. The Link between worlds two tone gold and black 3ds lx is probably still my favorite
I'm so ashamed I skipped the 64 for a PS1. The only nintendo console I missed.
I support orange in all its forms, especially when that form’s oblong with a greedy mascot fused into it. I picked Orange Pika version.
Just recently got a charcoal version that I dunno what to do with. Got any ideas?
One of the best clear consoles in the last years imo.
PS4- 500 million edtion.

I voted for the Japanese Clear Blue as that’s the model I currently use (with an UltraHDMI mod in it). That said, my absolute favourite is the Daiei Hawks one which is clear orange and clear dark grey, it isn’t on the list but it looks phenomenal!
I like that red and white one that looks like a Campino sweet
If you don't pick ICE BLUE or JUNGLE GREEN...
Makes me wish I knew on what happened to my old N64 (I had the clear smoke black colored one).
The original and the best 😊
The OG was the best. I like the n64 look in general, it has a sleek, curvy design.
My main controller for it is the gold "Nintendo Power" one, which is my favourite controller for the n64.
I always hated that hideous blue & yellow Pikachu model.
The colors are really cool, I can see why people collect them.
Charcoal, for shamelessly nostalgic reasons. I probably would have bought a different color (Gold was a thing???), but they didn't come out till well after I bought my console.
Actually i like the Icy Blue color of N64 but alas.... I choose PS1 over than N64 for way much better games library for me (DDR, Bishi Bashi Special, Punky Skunk, Chocobo Racing, Puzzle Bobble, Pocket Fighter, Pepsiman, etc)
All of them.
One of mine still has the Turok stickers on it.
Standard black one because that's the one I've always had and im biased xD
I've had both the charcoal one and the "see through" orange one, and I like the former the most. It just feels more "classic" to me.
I had a 'fire orange' N64 as a replacement for the original that broke in around 2001.
I don't know why my parents were so adamant to get a replacement when the Gamecube was around the corner.
Wish I still had the orange console though...literally am really pissed off about it. Its worth money now too.
Call me a bluff old traditionalist but the original Charcoal for me. It still looks great, it’s just a lovely effortless design.
@n0v4
That’s niiiiiiice
@electrolite77
Which comment XD? About Dreamcast or N64 ?
@nab1 OH. MY. GOD. You are absolutely correct!!!!! I remember that issue and just being so blown away!! I haven't seen that article in well over 20 years!! My monthly GamePro was my video game lifeline in those days! It was everything to me! Thank you so much for finding that
Btw this was my first issue of my official subscription!! It's what started my obsession with finding anything I can about the elusive "Ultra 64".
https://oldgamemags.tumblr.com/post/38884206020/gamepro-issue-71-june-1995-the-big-bang-new
I voted Smoke Black, its my favorite. I won the Funtastic Bundles Contest in Nintendo Power way back when, it came with a copy of Perfect Dark!
So damn cool. I love my original charcoal consoles but have 2 brand new never used gold controllers for when my current ones eventually get loose.
The Watermelon Red is a genuine thing of beauty in real life. And the good old original black model is lovely too.
@Gurpleplok I have one of these - nice to hear, I haven’t heard many saying it’s their favourite.
"Can you imagine a Nintendo 64 Classic Mini available in every one of these Funtastic colours?..."
I wish.
My girlfriend really wants this too.
I decided a few years back to get both a jungle green and ice blue console and mixed and matched parts to create blue/green variants which I then had HDMI modded. If you can get the mod and love N64, do it!
I know this is going to sound like a lie, but I swear it’s the truth. Back in winter 2003/2004, I decided I wanted to get an N64. I went to GameStop and they were sold out. The guy working there was like, well, I do have this like new pikachu system in the back, I could sell you that. So I was like sure, how much? He said well, how about $10. I was like wow, yes, absolutely. He walks out with it and this thing was literally fresh out of the box new. I was astounded. And I have treasured that system ever since. Played it like crazy and it’s still like new (including the adorable pikachu controller!). Up until the pikachu 3ds system came out, this was my favorite game system of all time. (Now it’s a tie) 😁
My dad had Jungle green so I've grown to love that one
Mine was jungle green, so that's the one I shall pick.
I had the green got it for Christmas. Never managed to beat DK64
I like them all, but ultimately the charcoal grey is my favorite. I still have one hooked up via an Eon Super 64 adapter. I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64. It was the first console I bought myself as a young adult. I'm over the whole mini plug and play console fad, but I would still jump at an N64 mini.
I never thought any console was attractive, you have problems if your attracted to a video game console, I also don't care what colors they come in as long as they played my game, write a real article.
The N64 is definitely my favourite console design of all time, Charcoal for me.
The controller was a by product of Nintendo forcing the use of the analogue stick, it worked fine tho obviously leaving the d pad all but inaccessible was pure egotism, in all's honesty the biggest mistake was not going CD to save on licensing, not using a dedicated sound chip and of course deciding gamers didn't want a console with RGB out.
Charcoal. That was mine. On release. Me and my mom went shopping. And there it was: a big pile of (as far as knew) to be sold out consoles. My parents never had deep pockets but she understood straight away: I told her that this system was officially not available in Germany at that time without pre-order and I would pay her back by selling my 3 months old Playstation. And My mom said ok and paid for it.
One of the best days in life. I still remember sitting in the train back to our village feeling, smelling and examining the box of this dear friend to be. I love you, mom
Always loved the sight of this console. The only one I ever owned where you could see the cartridge when you played (I had a NES, but skipped the 16-bit era due to lack of funds at the time). Classic black for me. The others didn't appeal to me at the time and still don't, with the exception that I was always a bit jealous of some of my mates who got the Goldeneye set with the black console and gold controller. Best value hardware bundle ever made in my opinion.
I love every of those colored ones. Have the Clear Blue with the White bottom, an Orange one and the Standard.
I also think, it's still a pretty console. Prettier than the Switch in it's Dock and prettier than the Wii.
The standard look.
My favourite is the n64 classic mini
My favorite N64 is the one I got from a going-out-of-business store for $30 with an expansion pack.
Dat Watermelon will haunt my dreams. Loved that console as a kid but growing up poor I had my Charcoal 64, when I’m done school and the kiddo is a little older I’d like to try and get all the funtastic variants in box.
Used to own the charchoal one but now own the cool ice blue varient. And 2 controllers.
Together with 20 games was the best deal i made in my life for 20 euro's.
2 times mario 64 (lol)
Banjo-kazooie.
Dk 64
Kart 64
Oot
Jet force gemini
And some other classics i cant remember, bundled with the usual EA fifa shovelware
Good looking console no matter what color it is.
Charcoal grey, Ice Blue, Watermelon Red, Midnight Purple, & the Gold. Also, the redesigned N64 removed the bottom EXT port.
I picked the grape purple as my fave, because I liked the transparency of it. You could see all the wires and everything, that made the system work.
The standard charcoal was the most beautiful device I had owned until then. I would stare at it in awe, and turning it on and seeing Mario 64 live - pure magic!
Sent mine off for a Millennium 2000 paint job years ago, turned out great. Top silver grey, bottom black, it's slick
It was toss up between standard grey and the gold edition for me. Love them both equally. For those interested in the UltraHDMI mod apparently hardware2 kits will be available soon but they will fly off shelves so get in quick.
"Arguably, everybody that wanted an N64 had already bought one by the time they arrived"
*looks up at the Ice Blue console that was the only one they ever got * hmmm.....
Jokes aside though, I think my favourite would probably be a toss-up between the Ice Blue one that I had, or the Grape Purple one.
I'd have to go with gold given that I just got one and fitted it with the advanced RGB mod kit by borti. The controller that came along is a bit worn, and I'm thinking of just letting it be on the shelf for looks. Console itself is a beauty, performs amazingly with the mod. I call it Golden Boy. Touch Golden Boy.
Gold is the least worst, since calling any a favourite would be pushing it. The Pokemon one is a hideous abomination, but it must have been a popular choice for parental buys since it always seemed to be the variant I'd find in charity shops.
@electrolite77
Haha sorry ☺️ I meant the PS4, though now I’ve read a bit your Dreamcast it applies to that as well 😄
@Ganner I was going to comment the same! I remember vividly looking at gaming mags when I was a wee boy, and the Ultra 64 was that nice shade of charcoal. precious memory.
@sportvater I have a similar experience! The N64 was released just over 2 weeks and as usual there was absolutely none to be found anywhere. You'd have a better chance finding Jimmy Hoffa's body before locating a N64 at that time. Anyways, my mom and I went to the local Target midweek and as usual she does the shopping and I would always hang out in the video game department playing around with the demo displays of systems. In that moment the store clerk just put 2 new N64 boxes behind the glass display. He says it was a unexpected late shipment. I literally sprinted around the store to find my mom. At first it was a hard no but I begged and pleaded that myself and remaining 3 older brothers want it so bad we will all together pay it back in full. I convinced her to at least check them out and the clerk backed me up by telling her these are virtually impossible to find, once these 2 are sold they most likely won't get any for a long time, and if they do they will be in small amounts like what happened that night. Again at first she said no, started to walk away but then to my complete shock she changed her mind and went back and we bought it. The funny thing is all she agreed to was the system and no game. Did not care at all because just getting the system was priority. Just like you the whole drive home I held the box smelling and examining the box with extreme enthusiasm. I burst through the front door screaming running around like a insane person. Best night ever!
Never used one but the Gold one looks cool
I love them all because the N64 is my favourite console ever (because I was a teenager when it was released).
I voted for the black one, because it's the one I owned. But the other are great too, and the Pikachu one, while stupid looking, is really fun.
I always thought the transparent ones looked ugly, like cheap junk. The gold one is mostly nice, but the Nintendo logo and controller port colors just don't really match the gold (although the N64 logo is ugly anyway). It's like they did a half-assed job.
Overall I don't think the N64 unit was very attractive to begin with 😅
It's gotta be the standard charcoal model. Mostly because it's the one I had. Obviously, it has the same features as all N64s except the Pikachu model, but the charcoal colour highlights them better.
Tie between the Charcoal and the Gold. Charcoal won out tho
I only had the charcoal one, but I liked the jungle green because of Donkey Kong
Jungle green. Came with a copy of a yellow DK64 and the better jump pack. I ended up with this one since my family couldn't afford one for the first few years it was out. Still got it and it works!
