Update (Fri 18th Dec, 2020 09:50 GMT): The five new titles are now available in their respective Nintendo Switch Online apps. You'll need to download the latest updates to access them (version 5.1.0. for the NES Nintendo Switch Online app and version 2.1.0 for the SNES equivalent).
Original Story (Tue 15th Dec, 2020 01:15 GMT): To mark the end of 2020, Nintendo will be releasing five - yes, five - retro games on its Switch Online service this month.
On SNES, the third entry in Rare's Donkey Kong Country series (1996) joins the library, followed by The Ignition Factor (1994, Jaleco), Super Valis IV (1992, Telenet Japan) and Tuff E Nuff (1993, another Jaleco title also known as Dead Dance in Japan). And on the NES front, we've got Nightshade (1992, Beam Software).
Below is the full rundown about each game, courtesy of the official Nintendo press release:
Super NES
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble! – Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong have gone missing. As Dixie Kong checks in with the rest of the family, she gets stuck with babysitting duties! But that won’t stop her from going on her next adventure. Play as Dixie Kong or Kiddy Kong solo, against a friend or with a friend. Take advantage of their abilities as they throw each other into action in over 40 levels.
The Ignition Factor – Intense firefighting action puts you in the heat of the moment. Take control of a brave firefighter as he battles to save people from towering infernos and flame-filled factories. Keep your cool to rescue all the victims. Get them out of the fire and back to safety!
Super Valis IV – A reddish moon calls forth evil, and the bells toll for battle. Take on the role of Lena, the only warrior able enough to wield the Valis sword against the forces of evil in this action platformer. The longer you take clearing a stage, the stronger the boss at its end will get. Dash, jump and use the items you collect along the way to traverse all seven stages.
Tuff E Nuff – Four champions seek to challenge the great tower! In this action game, your special attacks level up each time you defeat a certain number of enemies, making your hero grow even more powerful. Make good use of your guard, and carefully time your special attacks against all the tough guys you face on your way to Jade, the self-proclaimed Fighting King. With the instant-replay feature, you can have fun watching the last moments of a fight play out!
NES
Nightshade – Sutekh has blanketed Metro City under a shroud of crime and corruption. The big crime bosses now answer only to him. To avenge his fallen idol, Mark Gray dons the guise of Nightshade, the last person standing between Sutekh and total control of Metro City. Using a combo of point-and-click and action gameplay styles, stalk the streets of Metro City in search of vengeance.
Each of these titles will be released on 18th December. Will you be revisiting Donkey Kong Country 3 or any of these other titles when they arrive later this month? Leave a comment down below.

Wow nice, DKC3!
looks at other games
Wow nice, DKC3!
I wonder what their plan is when they release the Switch 2. At the rate they're going they won't even have all of their first-party titles on the Online Service by then, let alone all of the C tier ones they pad the service with.
More Donkey Kong Country is great, as for the rest....I've never heard of them.
Not sure if I need to though - they don't look thrilling.
Nintendo Switch Online has games
...Some games
My wishlist:
Super Mario RPG
N64 Online (I just want to play Mario Kart 64 with friends online... That battle mode is still the best)
If they do these back to back it'll be like reliving 1996 all over again. Heaven.
DKC3 is an outstanding game just overshadowed by its better older brothers.
Delighted to have the trilogy on my Switch!
I figured DKC3 was coming to NSO eventually. Now I need to figure out if I just want to play it there or still grab it on the Wii U VC....
Not interested at all with those titles above.
I want to play Tiny Toon Wacky Sports Challenge instead.
But, oh well... I can consider the SNES cartridge instead.
@nessisonett Haha, that got a genuine laugh out of me.
DK country 3, I still need to beat the first two.
Still no Axelay, Actraiser or Zombies Ate my Neighbors.
The Ignition Factor (a.k.a. Firefighting not be confuse with the Firemen which is SFC exclusive) is an instant classic, love that game and also Super Valis IV, a side-scrolling action series that starts on PC Engine and Sega Mega Drive but somehow the fourth and last chapter made it to Super NES.
DKC3 is good too but like many others it's the least memorable due to no Donkey and Diddy Kong being playable anymore. Still glad that the game arrive just in time for Christmas. There's even a Christmas code in the game that give all bonus rooms a Christmas theme makeover if y'all want to feel jolly for the holiday.
One game? That's it? NSO should do better than that!
Love DKC3...but literally just bought Nightshade CIB 5 days ago since I figured it'd be about the last game to come to NSO -__-.
Earthbound? I have it on 3DS and the SNES mini but I might actually play it if it was on my switch
Uhhhhh.....Hmmmm.....sure.....
thought that was a localized "The Firemen" at first and now i'm so sad
Nightshade?
Nintendo is now officially that guy
I always referred to DKC3 as @JonComms’s bane of existence due to “he who shall not be named” being there with Dixie.
Nice. Happy to try the other 4 for free. Nice to have the dk trilogy in one place though, I only had the first and dk 64 on the Wii U. (And Tropical Freeze of course)
Yay!
great selection of games!
but of course, everybody will complain no matter what
I’m gonna be optimistic! Apart from DKC3, I haven’t played these other games before, nor have I heard of them, so that means I have unchartered territory to explore! 😃
Honestly im glad I didn't resub this September. I love dkc3 but it wasn't worth having a sub to play these games anymore
@Anti-Matter
As of right now the Switch's SNES emulator doesn't support 4 players which is a big part of that game.
Not that it couldn't be patched in.
EDIT: I guess it has been added in since one of the Japan exclusive games is 4 player!
I think that fireman thing and Valis look really cool. I rather have more unknown stuff like that.
Also Nightshade looks crazy good for NES.
Anyway happy that they give us an update.
This is a pretty decent addition to NSO. I'm glad we finally have the complete DKC trilogy. I'm not familiar with the others, but most of them look interesting. It would have been nice to have more than one NES game, but it looks like we're getting a good one. I hope we end up getting Shadowgate, Deja vu, and Uninvited.
Any probably for Test Drive 2 The Duel?!
Good motivation to beat the first DKC for the first time!
@Sun-Wu_Goku All the old Mega Man and Street Fighter 2 games that you ever wanted are already on Switch in superior packages. Don't need to wait for the NES and Super NES versions.
Nightshade is one of my favorite guilty pleasure games ever! I am incredibly stoked for this!!
Whatever, all of yall are just being rude! That firefighter game looks pretty cool, honestly.
I might even get around to playing half way through the first stage, like I usually do when NSO updates
Hmm, well, price is right so I’ll take em!
I don’t think I played a minute of any of those back in the day.
Still so many non-licensed classics left on the table. Gimme gimme Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Cybernator!
Just occurred to me - was Magic Sword going to be included in Capcom’s arcade classics collections?? That was another one I loved on SNES.
Clever use of the word expand in the title when talking about DK
I think someone put the games in the wrong order... they are picking from worst to first, instead of the other way around.... yikes. Like not ONE reason to get excited. And if you say DKC3 you are crazy. They should have released all 3 at one time. Spacing them out is only appealing to the same people each time... fir those that don’t care about that franchise it’s a waste....
So sad.
Excellent timing! At Thanksgiving, I played DKC2 with my brother, and we wanted to play 3 also. Now we can at Christmas!
I don't know anything about the other titles, but I'm glad they're adding a good many this time. It's nice when they give more obscure titles a chance.
I'm hoping at some point we'll get Earthbound, Earthbound Beginnings, Chrono Trigger, and Super Mario RPG.
....... lol.....hahahahahahahah HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH, I get the joke now
C'mon Nintendo, you're scraping the bottom of the barrel with these releases (DKC3 nothwithstanding); at this point, why not expand the library into N64/GBA titles (like the Wii U did) and provide at least a half-decent selection of retro titles.
@Desrever "I might even get around to playing half way through the first stage"
This is genius and so true.
The PC Engine version of Valis IV was a far more complete package but in the early days of the SNES I remember enjoying Super Valis and some of its chill music tracks. I know everyone cries about these releases but I still think it’s a great service. I can’t find the time to play the ones that interest me!
This is stuff I want to see! We complain all the time about lost gems and Nintendo just went bam and gave us some baller Super NES titles! And DKC3... I mean DKC3 is an underrated gem too, but Valis IV is just a classic with a slick and smooth soundtrack!
Valis, neat. At least going for some deeper cuts this generation. If they can keep it going it’ll be good
Where. Are. The. JRPGs?!
Where. Is. Game. Boy?
GBA?
N64?
At this rate NSO will be comparable to Wii U's virtual console library sometime around the release of Switch 3 Pro in 2035.
I know maybe I sound ungrateful. But I would buy the games I want if they gave me the option. The Switch is my ideal platform to have these games on! Sure, I could get many of them on Wii U and I have a lot of them there, but it's Wii U. The Game Pad can barely handle it if there is a chair between me and the console.
NSO, Virtual Console, special individual re-releases, collections, something! I want some of my Nostalgia please! And my nostalgia is Game Boy, GBA, N64 and GameCube! Kids who grew up with those systems are adults now too. It's not just the NES and SNES people anymore. Wake up Nintendo! Cash in on us too please!
Super Valis IV and Dead Dance for me!
I was hoping to see DKC3 before Christmas! If anyone wants to make add a little Holiday cheer to your DKC3 game, here’s a cheat that makes all the bonus games Christmas themed: At the Select Game menu screen, highlight a saved game and press L, R, R, L, R, R, L, R, L, R then enter MERRY as the code. You should hear one of the Kongs make a noise confirming you entered it correctly.
Just waiting for Super Mario RPG at this point.
@Sun-Wu_Goku I’m pretty sure we won’t see a mega man on this service due to the mega man collections.
The Ignition Factor looks very intriguing to me and looking forward to trying it out!
@drewtoo26 Nintendo uploaded a short YouTube video detailing that exact code and one other one.
@HeyItsFlapjack Thanks for the heads up!
Valis 4 is awesome, I have the cart and a sealed Super Famicom Super Valis as well. If only you could purchase individual games ala carte virtual console style.
"At this rate NSO will be comparable to Wii U's virtual console library sometime around the release of Switch 3 Pro in 2035."
I often play my Wii U just for the Virtual Console games.
I’ll boot up this dusty old app just to play super valis.
The weakest of the DKC games on the SNES, but man am I happy to see it make it's way to the app, I'll definitely be playing the game.
Super Valis 4 looks like it could be interesting as well.
I’m confused as to how I’ve stumbled into this alternate universe where anyone would consider a Valis game worth playing. 🤪
@nessisonett
Ignition Factor is ok
@Jmjfrank
Mario RPG, FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound are all great omissions!
@jamesthemagi
Ignition Factor is a poor man’s The Firemen. Which is consistent for Jaleco, the crowned ruler of all things poor man’s something or another. 😂
@nessisonett
Lol, pretty much my reaction as well.
Super Valis 4 is tough but not so bad as long as you don't look into what it's missing from the original PC-Engine CD version. Frankly, I wish they'd release translated ports of the original Valis games on modern systems like Switch and PC. I am referring to the originals of course, not the sleazy hentai remakes.
I'd be more excited about DKC3 if I hadn't already played it a lot on my Super Nintendo for years. If I've played the others, I did so for only moments.
@robr Rival Turf may have been so bad they didn't even bother putting it on the NSO VC with the other Rushing Beat games but at least it had 2-player unlike the only other beat-em-up on the SNES at the time... I think.
I noticed someone mentioning Zombies Ate My Neighbors as I was scrolling down to make my own comment. Unless there are royalty complications or something, I don't understand why it hasn't been put on the SNES app.
I’m surprised they haven’t begun slowly dripping out ever Bases Loaded title.
Who was the dingbat responsible for the cover for Tuff E Nuff? How are you supposed to get the title from the box? Minus another five points for the Liefeld art.
@DrDaisy
Zombies Ate My Neighbors was a LucasArts game so we’ll have to take it up with Disney. They did dump a bunch of classic PC titles on Steam at one point.
The thing about Valis is...well wasn’t the hentai simply inevitable? It’s an otaku game, through and through. Gameplay was never a priority for the series. It exists to tick off a checklist for a certain kind of perv.
@robr ummm no. The snes title is actually a well made platformer in the vein of rastan
Nightshade is supposed to be amazing. Never heard of it before tonight myself, but I love discovering hidden gems like this.
@faint
I’ll have to try it. Maybe I’m wrong? I only remember playing some Valis titles on Genesis and Turbo CD and I thought they controlled quite terribly at the time. They just seemed to exist to sell to that schoolgirl turned scantly clad fetish.
I won’t complain, as theres plenty I haven’t even touched on these NSO apps. I’ve had Breath of Fire 2 on my mind for months, off and on, and I haven’t bothered with it. Last time I booted up the SNES app I rushed through and beat all of All-Stars when it dropped. Then another time I flew through StarFox. When I play my Switch, its always something new or a newer favorite. I think all these games are nice, and deep cuts are welcome. I do try them sometimes, even though most of those Jaleco games are the odd ones I never wanted to rent as a kid. They’d always be there looking lonely at the Video & Tan store. Lol.
It does puzzle me that we don’t have a Gameboy section, yet. I’m sure it would do well. I’d play stuff like Wario Land and Kirby’s Dream Land 2 right away. And hope for deep cuts like Sword of Hope.
Glad we got the full DKC trilogy before Christmas. Cheers everyone.
Donkey Kong Country 3 is very underrated.
It has some very inventive levels and bosses, along with some RPG elements.
It's not as cool as DKC2, but shows Rare's path to Banjo-Kazooie (different art style, Brothers Bears, snowmen).
And Kiddy Kong is awesome.
I'm looking forward to play Super Valis 4 the most from this lineup, I think. Although I should play DKC3 as well. It's the only one of the Rare trilogy I haven't played.
The Valis games on Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) and Super Nintendo aren't terrible, they're just not that great. I've never actually played the TG16-CD games, but from everything I've seen and heard, my guess is that they're superior, especially with Valis 4 which has more characters. There's nothing "Super" about the SNES port, and I'm guessing it was named as such soley as a part of the annoying trend of adding Super to the titles of SNES games. I'm just glad A Link To The Past wasn't called Super The Legend of Zelda and that America had enough sense to rename the Super Donkey Kong games to Donkey Kong Country. Don't even get me started on the 59 missing DOOM games. 😉
@Juga Personally, I could hardly care less about the Mother series, but I wish Nintendo would release the trilogy globally just so fans would shut up about it.
@FullMetalWesker
Have you even played any of the games, apart from the most obvious (DKC3), or are you assuming they’re bad because you haven’t heard of them?
@BanjoPickles FullMetalWesker probably doesn't recognize the existence of hidden gems. I don't believe in them either.
Just give us the Gauntlet Games for the nes. It is probally the only nes game I'd play on online co-op mode.
@Retro_Player_77 The Firemen was not a SFC exclusive; it reveived a PAL release too.
So happy to finally enjoy the full playing experience of DKC3 after all these years. This was a game that I didn’t get too much exposure of, due to the 32-bit era of the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn.
Donkey Kong Country 3 was a huge disappointment, but it will expose all the secret Kiddy Kong fans out there lol!
@Darlinfan Totally agree. Well known games must be here, but the more obscure ones are the most appealing to me. The least I know about them, the more exciting when they come to the service.
By the way, it was about time they added new titles.
Nightshade is an interesting choice, but my vote is for Actraiser.
@Scarthcaroth Really? Guess the English repro I saw wasn't a repro after all.
I swear they're making these games up as we go
That's why they take so much time to add new ones
Worth the wait ...? ... No
DKC3 ain’t bad, but I could never really get into like DKC and DKC2. I can play those all day but DKC3 is just hard for me to get into. Jaleco games have never clicked with me but that Super Valis seems interesting I guess.
Sweet, DKC3! It's one of my favorite games, and now a new generation of non-Wii U and New 3DS owners can experience it! I was concerned they'd skip this one or release it alongside other games that eclipse it. Glad I was wrong.
Go play DKC3 on Friday if you've never tried it. It's very polished and full of variety, with beautiful SNES graphics and a healthy difficulty curve.
@DK-Fan,
Welcome to a typical Nintendo life article comment section, some hate the online service and never miss an opportunity to tell people, while totally ignoring the fact there is over a hundred free retro titles on the service.
Colour me surprised, they've found a NES game that's caught my interest. Nightshade needs further investigation.
@Slowdive Are you telling me that BOTW rips off this Super Valis IV as well as Crystalis?!?!
Nightshade looks awesome!
Cool. DKC3!! I just yesterday placed that game prominently on one of my shelves of physical collections as a visual cue to load it on the sd2snes more often. I'm not sure these purely digital collections are working for me, but hey, now that it's on the Switch, hassle-free savestates, yay!
@BanjoPickles - To be honest, I haven't played any of these games, DKC3 included, but I understand DKC3 is a decent game, whereas the others, unless I missed it, aren't that acclaimed or talked about, even as cult classics, so my assumption is they're just some random titles plucked from the bowels of the NES/SNES library.
Edit: Also, the comment was partly to complain about the lack of non-SNES/NES retro titles on Switch (seriously, where are they?)
@DrDaisy - More like a belief that for consoles this old, any hidden gems probably would've been discovered by now, so if these games aren't well known, it's probably for good reason.
Nice, rocking the deep cuts.
Never played Donkey Kong Country 3 (only the first two and the Retro Studios games) so excited about that!
I hope we get Mario Paint and Mario RPG next year.
They only need to put Lufia 2 on there and they’re done . I would kill to play that on NSO.
They've taken AGES to complete the trilogy... Honestly, if they don't plan to release Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy VI and such gems, and it seems to be the case, they should move on to another hardware already. What about some Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games?? What about N64 games? I know ut sounds crazy, but what about Gamecube and Wii games?? Switch is perfectly capable of emulating them.
I mean, we don't have Virtual Console anymore...
As I understand Nightshade is one of NES hidden gems.
I admit that I was foolish enough to expect Fire Emblem.
Gave up on Nintendo's online service.
Didn't renew it and don't think it will change any time soon.
@the_beaver I think some third parties decided they want to release their own retro compilations. Notice how Contra or Castlevania aren't in NSO? Likely because Konami decided "we can release this on our own". Same for Mega Man, Dragon Quest etc.
Square knows all too well that they can sell their old stuff without Nintendo giving it away in the NSO. They're probably sitting on Chrono Trigger after the backlash from PC release. Note how Dragon Quests are the mobile versions on Switch.
They do a horrible job 'selling' these.
I mean, nightshade, that's the first few seconds of the gameplay. You see him hopping on his chair for 5 seconds in a trailer.
BORING
@Friendly On one hand it's boring. On the other it shows what kind of game it is: one that requires the player to think and seek solutions not usual for NES games. It would be too easy to make Nightshade look like a typical side-scroller/platformer.
I've heard a lot about Ignition Factor.
Supposedly pretty good!
@SmaggTheSmug True, but at least show the splash screen, part of the story, some ar. There's probably something they can do to better 'sell' these games?
"Expands" LMAO
Nightshade? The Claws of HEUGH?!?!
Ahh, Nightshade, the game that is 100% not The Shadow.
Nintendo releases the same old titles, people complain, Nintendo releases more obscure games, people complain.
At last the best game of the DKC will be available. Love Kiddy Kong.
When do we get Actraiser?
I will admit some of the games they are adding are certainly much more eclectic and aren't games that have been rerelessed un the past so it's actually a good thing in a way that such games that most people would probably ignore get some attention.
Never played any of these. Cool.
Nightshade and Super Valis are great additions too.
I wish Nintendo would just increase the subscription in line with PS+ / Xbox Live and give us a couple of newer games every month.
Worms rumble was part of the PlayStation sub this month and would have been a great free Switch game.
@PBandSmelly
"Lie about the frequent updates, I'm mad. Update twice or thrice a year, how could you? Add in Nightshade, you're officially that guy, you know--y'know the one. He opens an investors' meeting and he's like, 'we'll broad'n da appeeeeeal, wit' da understanding it will be measured'n yeeears', F@#K YOU!
[dramatic pause]
I AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN'T HAVIN' DAAAAAT 5#IT!"
@robr
There’s hentai of everything let’s not kid ourselves.
I wish whatever smoothing filter they use in those YouTube previews would be available for the games.
Why not add more consoles nintendo😑😑😑😑😑😑😑???? What are you waiting for? Do you not get the hint that not everyone may think your service is worth it in its current state? Cos here's a clue, not everyone thinks it's worth it. Take your hands off your ears, get your finger out, AND MAKE A DAMN CHANGE! Listen to fan feedback nintendo, I mean CLOWNTENDO!
@OorWullie Because most of them are not cult classics or hidden gens or anything. They're the equivalent of Switch eShop shovelware! Especially some of the stuff the SNES one which is becoming full of mediocre Jaleco games! They must be cheap for Nintendo to license. The NES one seems to get better 3rd party stuff.
Cool Games, never played Super Valis
Everyone's routinely hyped about DKC 3 and I'm mostly looking forward to Ignition Factor, Super Valis IV and Nightshade - all neat games even despite Super Valis being a somewhat odd and not unnoticeably curtailed port of the original. Kunio Dodgeball from the Japanese lineup is a nice addition, too.
@robr the kind of "otaku stuff" you're thinking off has always been found more often on the visual novel front, but all the moreso back in the 90s. Valis franchise actually got such a game (albeit a kinkier loose retelling of the first four games) on PC for its anniversary in 2006, but the rest, all at least a decade prior, were all side-scrolling ARPGs - which might even turn the "watch it for the plot" joke on the audience since they reportedly beat Ninja Gaiden to animated cutscenes - they were SFW plots, but plots you could actually watch for a change!
@FullMetalWesker
Give Nightshade a chance. It’s actually one of my favorite hidden gems. I was more excited to see Nightshade than I was DKC3.. Also, Valis is a decent game.
Nightshade looks interesting, gotta try that. Frustrating it's not available immediately.
Such a lacklustre bunch of games, considering the sheer volume on nes and Snes to choose from the current selection is very limited.
I have a raspberry pi and have access to thousands so am very lucky. The online selection is average at best
@Zacattack99 We'll just pretend Dixie Kong is the only character and ignore any barrels
Still no Earthbound eh? Should've added the first Fire Emblem game, but nope, gotta scam people out of 7 bucks for that and 20 for the bad Switch Online.
DKC3 was one of my favorite SNES games, I replayed it SO MANY times.
@gcunit From the JonTron review I watched, Nightshade is a frustrating and confusing game.
@Retro_Player_77 @somebread The Firemen was released in PAL regions, it's playable English, French and German. And yes, it's a much better game than The Ignition Factor.
Oh come on, nobody is about to sit there for 20+ hours to complete DKC3 on that shoddy SNES emulator that Nintendo have legally given us.
Some fans will likely play a few hours, for nostalgia purposes, put the damn game away and most likely NEVER touch it again.
I've said this a lot lately about Nintendo's moves on the Switch, but this like other things they have done recently, adds no value to the Switch.
Nobody is sitting there at home without a Switch, waiting for this news to drop like "oh look Tuff E Nuff has finally made it over, i best go spend my money on that Switch".
Give me a break Nintendo, do something worth while for a change, so close to Christmas, how about giving us a shoddy N64 emulator, i know we'll eat that up if you did.
At least you know that adding an N64 app on the Switch would actually help increase sales of the console.
It’s high time the Valis series get rebooted, there was a lot of great arcade-y progression ideas in those games and a charming protagonist. (We can go ahead and forget that unfortunate hentai remake though.)
Glad to have Super Valis IV but it is an odd release without the other three games (which I don’t think are on Super Nintendo; I mostly remember playing Valis games, rented, on Genesis)
Ahahaha Tuff E Nuff (er, I mean: HEY PUNK! ARE YOU TUFF E NUFF? Master the Moves to Master Me!). For those who haven't played it, if you're expecting a worthy competitor to Street Fighter II, prepare to be disappointed. But it was probably something they could get cheap.
Looking forward to playing through DKC 3 again, obviously. Interested in trying out Nightshade, Valis, and Ignition Factor for the first time.
Bruh, like, where's EarthBound? It was my favorite SNES game like ever, and they still won't mention it... Are they afraid of the Mother 3 backlash?
Earthbound is on the Wii U. I guess you shouldn't have sold your Wii U if you still wanted to play SNES, GBA and N64 games.
My Xbox One does this now, but still cool.
I really dislike the slow drip of new games. It's time for Game boy and GBA games to appear. N64 would be a plus too.
I have such great memories of DKC3 as I got it for Christmas in 1996. Still a very good game too when I played it a few years back.
For DKC3 I wish they would pull the new David Wise soundtrack from the GBA version!
Ooh my fav DKC game! Also I'll have to give Nighshade a try at last.
i sense a pattern to these releases: One essential title, 2 standard to substandard curiosities, and 2 junk titles
@daisygurl I think that happened around 1994
Rounding out the DKC trilogy? Nice!
What the heck are these other titles?
DKC 3 for me. The other games don't appeal, we definitely need GBA games soon.
@Dinklebot That would require modding the game. Not like there haven't been other changed versions on Virtual Console but those are usually removing advertising or epilepsy-inducing stuff, not replacing an entire soundtrack. Best we can hope for is if they start putting GBA titles on there and DKC 3 happens to be one of them.
FTR, both soundtracks have their good points, but I actually think the SNES DKC3 soundtrack is greatly underrated.
People mentioning The Firemen (the Human game), it did get an English localization for PAL regions. I suppose it wouldn't be impossible for that game to show up at some point (I mean, the untranslated PS1 sequel was released on PSN many years ago, for westerns who want to try their luck playing it in Japanese).
@Slowdive Unfortunately Beam Software is probably now associated with the LJN shovelware they had to make to pay the bills (although supposedly the last LJN game they made, True Lies, was a step above in quality).
Though I haven't played Nightshade, hoping that the Konami name (essentially) means they gave them more of a budget to turn out a better game.
@Retro_Player_77 There are repros of a "NTSC" Fireman, but the owner of SNES Central has thrown around a theory that the prototype ROM was more a transitional build of the PAL version than an intended American release. (that is, they had translated it but hadn't yet converted it to PAL)
His big conclusion being that the prototype version also had generally worse English than the official PAL release, suggesting it just wasn't yet at a version ready to release.
After watching the trailer, the only game I really don't care about is Tuff E Nuff. Fighters seem stiff, movement looks bad.
As for the other titles, they all picked my interest. Of course DKC is a no brainer but the other 3 titles are interesting, especially the firefighting game and the NES point and click one.
The JP version is gonna include a Kunyo Kun volleyball game. It's a different title that might be worth trying out
Apart from DKC 1 & 2 I’ve got no interest in SNES or NES games.
Too many amazing current games...
DKC3 is my favorite of the three DKC games. It just had a unique feel to it, especially the music and boss fights.
@HexagonSun Nice nod to my fav three NES point-and-clicks! I wish Uninvited II had come to NES (or did it?)
Ok, not bad NSO. We've all been stoked about ActRaiser lately, but Super Valis IV for me was an accidental $2 find that blew me away back in the day with it's competent side-on gameplay and rediculously memorable music I STILL hum to this day (Valhalla... Nuff said). It almost reminded me of that "hidden gem with good music" feeling I got from Journey to Silius, another game I hoped would come to NSO that did. Keep the rarities coming!
Ignition Factor was a game I started on emulation but didn't follow it up, so I will now, especially since I beat Operation Logic Bomb.
Nightshade was a part of what I called "the last 3 NES games I plan to play" from back in the day, which were this, VICE: Project Doom, and Shatterhand (Shatterhand I beat, but the world needs to play it on NSO), now two are on NSO. Sadly I don't remember if I got around to beating this game, so I will give it a go anew.
I still hold out hope for Guardian Legend, Battle of Olympus, and both Power Blades to hit the NES. I haven't played the latter since I was a kid.
There should be an option were you can play as Donkey Kong and Dixie, and not you know who
Wonderful to have the entire DKC trilogy on my beloved Switch console. Now if we could classics like Earthworm Jim 1 & 2, Hagane or Clocktower next, I would be a happy little Ghoulboy.
@SMW It's the only one of the five DKC games I've never played, so very excited to try it!
Please give us Rainbow Islands.
@0blivion I would love to have Cool Spot, Bubsy and Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose. SNES had so many great platformers!
@DiscoSi Never played the SNES version but I keep hoping they'll do an Arcade Archive version. Especially as Taito has other games like Puzzle Bobble on there.
DKC 3 baby (preferred 2 but always nice to have a nostalgic bash at it again).
Not too familiar with the others tbh
Lol I updated yesterday for the previous new batches. I don't play often it seems.
I love some dk3. I actually prefer it over 2.
Ι see what Playstation Now, PS plus and Game Pass got to offer and i find Nintendo offering archaic. Not even N64/Gba games.
@TYRANACLES Having played it for the first time this morning I'm feeling the same! It feels closer to the first game which I always preferred to the second.
It has that heavy/light character balance back which I missed in DKC2 (Dixie and Diddy were took similar) It has more of a jungle/forest feel like the first game (the level where you climb inside the tree trunks with the monkeys throwing stuff at you is fantastic!), the music is, more DKC1 like and the level designs just aren't so crazy like in DKC2. Also the controls of Dixie feel tighter. I'm really hoping there are no flying parrot levels like DKC2 which I didn't like either.
I want, nay demand, the table tennis game that is in the Japanaese NES online selection!
(I am too lazy to create a Japanese account)
I honestly think DKC3 is better than DKC1, and it's the game I've played the least, so I'm really looking forward to another playthrough.
Messed around with Nightshade this morning, and it's a really clever game from what I've seen. Small wonder it's considered a hidden gem.
With the games being up on there respective apps now, I know what I'll be playing this weekend.
I for one am glad for the opportunity to play uncommon titles legitimately. Would I buy any of these individually? Probably not. Will I give them a shot for free? Absolutely. Who knows, maybe I'll find something I like.
I’ve never played dkc3.. so I’d be tempted.. but I’ve stopped paying for Nintendo online, after getting bored of Mario creator
Out of these Nightshade looks the most interesting.
Really just 1 title. When comparing Gamepass & PS Now to what Nintendo is offering....it's a bad joke on Nintendo fans.
Sony offers PS2, PS3 and PS4 games.
Microsoft offers Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One games.
Nintendo offers NES and SNES games.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Apparently DKC3 takes place on the 'other side' of DK Isle, making it somewhat similar but also different to DKC.
There are a few Squawks levels.
@Sun-Wu_Goku Mega Man and Street Fighter 2 are already available in their own collections on the Switch, that's why none of them are on NSO. No chance of any TMNT games because of licensing.
@Razer What are you smoking?! Shoddy emulator? That emulator is excellent! The rest your overly negative drivel I will not even address. Rubbish comment. 🙄
@vio ok shill, lap up your Nintendo flavoured rubbish all you want. At this stage anyone who genuinely defends this service are delusional people.
Most of us are over these 30 year old games, try actually reading the comments... if they please you then all the more power to you. Most of us however, have higher standards.
Nintendo's NSO is an absolute joke. And the butt of the jokes are those who are still defending it.
@Razer it's cheap and you can play online
I wonder how many people actually play these games more than once.
@ChaosBadger777 I got PS+ last year for $45. I paid $35 for NSO. That $10 shouldn't be the difference between modern games and 40 year old "classic." NSO is total garbage.
@Razer Come on guy; FOCUS. I made no mention of NSO as a whole, it's value, quality or lack there of. I honed in on your comment about the emulator being "shoddy" because that is complete nonsense. You're entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts. As for NSO, if you feel it is crap and not worth $20 a year, then don't subscribe to it. No one is forcing you to. But move on with your life. Your extreme negativity is exhausting, irritating and has no place here.
@SMW Agreed. I've always found it to be the most fun of the three. Still, I can understand why 2 is considered to be best on an objective level.
@vio there's much better Snes emulators that are not made by Nintendo (at least there use to be?), some have/had some great features too.
If you've ever used any of those you wouldn't find the sub par one Nintendo has got at all interesting.
In terms of features, yes, it is very bare bones and simple. But it excells at it's primary function which is to emulate the SNES hardware. Hop on YouTube and compare footage from some of the games running on an actual SNES vs thr NSO emulator and you will see.
@vio maybe they aren’t as good as they use to be, Nintendo cracked down hard on them a couple of years back.
But from what i recall, there use to be emulators that are just as good as the one Nintendo has for the NSO and had extra features the NSO one doesn't have.
Maybe now they might have been hunted down by Nintendo's legal goons. But before there use to be much better alternatives.
I guess thats why Nintendo hunted them down, so they could feed us this sub par junk.
Hey man if you want to convince yourself that the chocolate cake they sell you pre packaged from the factory is better than the one a mother cooks, don't let me stop you.
But i don't buy it for a second.
Valis and Y’s were some of the best RPGs back in the day, they were far better than the Zelda adventures and at the time, Final Fantasy couldn’t hold a candle to them.
Stupid people tried to proclaim that some of these were just Zelda clones, but they were far more in depth than Zelda was in that time frame.
Ignition, Valis IV, and Donkey Kong Country 3 are great additions to this library!
The slow drip of titles as well as the choice of titles takes the fun out of the VC console for me. If you really want to play (a) specific game(s) just emulate them. After decades gone by, I don't see any point in a waiting & hoping game here. With this current pace, it is an unavoidable fact, that a the biggest part of the SNES library will never say the light of day on Switch - not to mention other systems. I'm not sure why Nintendo does this, as they are not really selling these games in the primary market anymore, so they do not make any money of them, as far as I can say, but hey ... you can pull a Disney+ and try to finally capitalize on your backcatalogue or you don't. Plus, the emulation is pretty barebones, it's fine, but not really "premium" imho, considering it comes at cost, even if you already bought these games in the past (multiple times in some cases for sure).
Nice to finally see DKC 3 there though, definitely a classic that should be easily accessible!
Seriously guys DKC3 (if I beat this I’ve completed the trilogy) is pretty good I’ve been playing it recently I might try out Nightshade soon
Virtual Console or GTFO.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I totally agree with you! I like them all no doubt but I like how 1 and 3 had less of an overall theme such as pirates or Vikings and just stuck to two barrel chucking monkeys and loads of unsavory wildlife fiends.
Nightshade is cool.
We need Golgo 13 & Strider! Bionic Commando! Final Fantasy! Maniac Mansion!
And a translation of Sweet Home too!
