This week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game director Masahiro Sakurai is hosting a special presentation for the upcoming DLC fighter Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. He was first revealed to the world at last week's Game Awards show.
The broadcast itself will take place on 17th December (2 PM PT / 5 PM ET) and during this event we'll learn about the new character along with his release date (which is planned for some time this month). In addition to this, we now also know the show will run for "about 35 minutes" according to Nintendo's Japanese Twitter account.
If you would like to get to know this antagonist a little more, why not download his game Final Fantasy VII from the Switch eShop. Will you be tuning into this upcoming broadcast? What else are you hoping to see? Leave a comment down below.

Hoping 2 of those 35 minutes is a switch trailer of FF7R
I hope it comes out the same day.
Can’t wait! Hopefully we will get a few more tracks as well!
But which Mii Costumes will appear? That's what I'm itching to see.
I think the release will be the same day...after all, he is coming before the month ends, might as well get extra fanfare with the always nice "get it right now" announcement.
I'm also curious about the upcoming mii costumes. Chocobo and Geno seem a given considering the main event, but I hope for another one with a music track, Hollow Knight, Hat Girl or Quote (from Cave Story) would be my top picks.
@NerdyBoutKirby My bets are on a Tifa mii-brawler outfit, Zack Mii-swordsman outfit and a Barret Mii-gunner outfit.
@SeantheDon29 Don't forget about the return of Smash 4's Chocobo outfit!
Obligatory comment about how few music tracks he’s probably gonna come with
That's a pretty phallic image there...
Mostly excited for the Mii fighters since I never liked what I played of the original FF7. Since Crono is likely dead as a potential fighter, maybe we'll get him as a Mii Swordfighter? A girl can hope.
@PikaPhantom Or heck, what about a Vincent or even Angeal/Genesis Mii Swordsman outfit? Crisis Core needs more recognition.
@SeantheDon29 They could also do other characters from the Final Fantasy series like Squall or Wakka. It doesn't have to be focused on 7 you know.
It had better be 35 minutes of Sephiroth killing Aerith on loop while Sakurai works out in the background.
I really wanna see a FNAF mii costume. FNAF has changed the horror scene and it needs representation not as a character because...face it, as much as I like fnaf, Freddy as a fighter won't work. Costumes work PERFECTLY though! Especially the springlock costumes, because not only are they the most important characters in the fnaf series, but...they are literal costumes themselves!
@Snatcher Quite certain it was already confirmed that Spehiroth will be released on 18.12.2020 - a day after the presentation.
What about time of the presentation, not finding it in this article?
35 minutes? How long are these normally?
@faint It depends on the fighter and how much detail Sakurai puts into the character and a brief history of the character in question.
@faint Hero was 21 minutes, Banjo was 25, Terry was 48 (he went DEEP into SNK/Neo-Geo explanation), Byleth was 38, Min Min was 35, and Steve was 46. So Sephy's is about average length.
And I'm guessing that, in addition to Geno and Chocobo coming back, we'll also be seeing the return of Lloyd Irving's costume.
I'll be honest, I'm looking forward to the Mii Outfits and possible amiibo reveals. FF7 is high on my list and all, but this whole Fighters Pass thing has gone on a very long time. The mural's secrets plus completing my display alone are wrecking my nerves.
Just give me my Geno mii costume already so you can kill my childhood forever, Nintendo/SquareEnix.
@NintendoByNature FF7R Cloud edition
It's both a pun and an insult (to the Switch).
I'm not a Final Fantasy guy. Or a Minecraft guy. Nor am I into ARMS. Or Fire Emblem. Or Fatal Fury.
But I wouldn't miss this presentation for the world. Sakurai's broadcasts are always so much fun, and he brings lots of charm, humor, and charisma--even if I don't care about the fighter at hand. New Mii costumes also bring a lot of hype. It was great to see Cuphead represented in the game! I really hope we see Hat Kid next; A Hat in Time is one of my favorite Switch games, but I definitely think it's too recent for her to be her own character, so a Mii costume would be perfect. New stages are also a treat, and I'm sure this will be no exception.
Can't wait till Friday!
Is that saying 7:00 Japan time? So 22:00 UK?
Would really love to see something from Freedom Planet as a Mii Costume.
Eh, it's a maybe from me, not a FF fan so...yeah.
I'll prolly watch it Friday morning since it's at 10pm here.
Based on the trailer he also upgraded clouds sword and smash attack.
I wish they do more with DLC like more costumes for each character. I would love for link to have more costumes from BOTW (knight) or also add more stuff like when holding the spin attack you do the lightning attack from botw (max 2 times) or one perfect block reflects like botw etc. Feels like they do more work for third party than the first party characters.
@PBandSmelly Ya I think it will get a skin.
This is getting ridiculous 🙄
New DLC characters coming to Smash in 2021:
Larry Koopa from Mario 3 (seven versions of Larry, all palette swapped), The Old Man that lives in Zelda caves, the guy in the crowd on NES ExciteBike (he is the bleachers, 124th pixel from the left), and that vertical gate from the end of every level in Megaman.
Mainly interested in the song selection and Mii costumes. I don't buy costumes unless they have music but they are always fun to see. And I hope they have costumes from multiple Square Enix franchises. Would love to see Bravely Default or TWEWY costumed.
Some part of me also wants to see the world burn. I want to see the reaction when Sora or Geno gets revealed as a costume. I'd really like if Sora were playable but this is the next best thing.
@PBandSmelly the only way it’s changed horror is for the worse, nothing good about it at all
Please add “the man with the machine gun” to the music tracks (even if it is from FFVIII, I don’t care)
Was steve 45 minutes or 35 minutes?
@TheSmashTheorist 45
Dont present it. Just release it.
@Branovices Steve's was better IMO.
Can we get conker for smash since microsoft and Nintendo are playing nice lol!!!!!
@Bustacap so sephiroth is gonna be less complcated
It must be great being a Smash player, since all Nintendo seems to do these days is create more characters for it. I'm not a fan of the game, but I'm sick to death of these announcements constantly popping up in my feed. It'd be great if you could just tag specific games as 'not interested' so you could just ignore this 'news'.
I wonder what they could have produced instead in the time they've wasted on all this DLC for one awful game?
@Antiriad2097 this is not an 'awful game'! It's a masterpiece! It's amazing!
@NintendoByNature Don't jump to conclusions.
@sanderev hah! I can see that happening actually.
@streetzman don't worry I'm not getting my hopes up
@TheSmashTheorist Keep in mind he also announced amiibo and talked about what Minecraft was for a while.
@Chocokrow yeah. I wonder what the mii costumes are going to be
35 minutes isn't that much less time than one of the full-blown Directs we haven't seen in more than a year now. Setting aside all of the Smash-themed "Directs" already, it's a lot to dedicate to one game, let alone a single character DLC.
Nintendo better have some HUGE announcements coming next year; they can't cover up the dearth of original, current-gen first-party games that's been the case for way too long now. I expect they'll deliver given Zelda's 35th Anniversary, possibly Metroid Prime 4, and maybe even an upgraded Switch model, but they really, really need to.
@NerdyBoutKirby my guess is some FF7 characters,Among Us,and Hat Kid
Great, now there will be more than 2 songs for FF so that's SAD the joke can't be a thing anymore
@Prizm Larry Koopa is already a fighter in the game.
I'm so excited for this!
wen the next dlc fighter gets revealed soon it better be doomslayer,
@LatsaSpege To be fair there are many iconic and deserving songs that have been left out from other games/franchises. Take the amazing intro for Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn or "Kuno no Tairiku" from Xenoblade Chronicles X's volcanic continent Cauldros (the one with those amazing bells and percussion; if you've heard it you'll know exactly what I'm talking about).
Of course, Smash Ultimate's existing list of soundtracks is already incredible, and I guess there's only so many songs Nintendo can squeeze into it. But just like the character roster itself, we can always hope for at least one more of our favorites.
@LatsaSpege Yeah, instead of 2 there’ll be 3 with One Winged Angel being the only new song added. 🙂
(I really hope this isn’t the case)
@HamatoYoshi
Gee thanks, your contribution here sure has changed my view on FNAF. I'll be sure to never touch it again because you said so
New content is always welcome, but at this point I just want the game to play better. I hope we get some adjustments to the core game like they've done with the previous two online improvements.
I'm still bitter that Travis Touchdown is just a costume.
@Kiwi_Unlimited Don't take this the wrong way, but he's lucky he got that.
When characters like Rayman and Bomberman who are more iconic and important to gaming still can't make the main roster of Smash, then why should someone like Travis Touchdown?
I get you like the character, trust me I have a list of fighters I would love to see get in as third-party reps in Smash.
But all the third-party reps outside of Bayonetta are icons of gaming and their franchises are important to the history of gaming as a whole.
Bayonetta gets a pass since Nintendo owns the publishing rights to her.
But how is Travis Touchdown important to gaming?
@Bankaj The presentation will be on December 17th 2 PM Pacific Time / 5 PM U.S. Eastern Time
since we saw everything besides the ultimate , i guess the ult must be 35 minutes
I know some people don't mind data leaks that much... I know I don't... BUT this one! this reveal I didn't expect and got me super hyped... I'm quite happy this character wasn' leaked / spoiled to us
Fill out your Sakurai Bingo cards if you haven't.
@Caryslan Banjo isn't. He's just a character that Sakurai didn't put in Melee when he had the chance and fans were very upset about.
@NintendoByNature 😂 not going to happen.
If I see no Meme Costumes for Miis, I'm gonna yahoo off the earth in mario odyssey.
Great that an iconic villain is coming to Smash.
Hopefully Sephiroth is released straight away. Later in the month??There's not much of this month left XD
I was kinda on the fence this one because firstly- Sephiroth is an awesome realistic badass with a complex background... now thrown into a cartoony slapstick world- possibly being pummeled by Pichu with a paper fan..
This will definitely keep final fantasy remake fans distracted until the next part of FF7 Remake comes out. We already have this dilemma if Sephiroth should appear too much as an end boss- it could water him down as a fearsome foe
I was thinking it could be the same thing happening here
But... screw it, Sephiroth is one of the most iconic and 'loved' villains of all time and is finally playable in some way. I wasn't bothered with the new set of DLC fighters at first. But as soon as I saw Sephiroth, that sold it for me!
I really hope sephiroth is not a spammy online character.
@RandomAfricanGamer All characters are that, depends on the player.
@Ardisan
True
@Prizm in no way the characters you mentioned are even comparable to the excellent choice that Sephiroth is. He has more story and background than any character Nintendo ever created. You are just being ridiculous.
I wanted Geno. It's fine to let go of our most wanted characters at some point.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed yet, but does anyone find it strange that NoA still hasn't opened their stream on YouTube, while all other regions have theirs open for a long time?
@Caryslan
Firstly, you make valid points, and quite frankly, Bomberman is a unique enough fighter, with long enough standing, to absolutely deserve a slot. He is, however, not -currently- as relevant. He had an old style top down game when the switch released, but he doesn't really have a lot of presence currently (I miss his 64 era).
Travis does have some justification, originally being an exclusive of nintendo (eventually becoming a timed exclusive, when that concept was still sort of new).
But he arguably brought a lot to the wii, showing it as a system that didn't JUST cater to children (along with Mad World and Manhunt 2).
Further, he's still relevant/modern. He's about to release in a third main game, after having a side game already on switch.
(To be fair, I recognize that Sephiroth is iconic).
While I believe his fighting style amongst swordsmen would warrant more attention as well, i admit that that isn't enough of a selling point, as someone like Earthworm Jim would have REALLY been fun for fighting style.
So I admit I'm bitter and believe he very much has a rightful place with enough nintendo history to warrant more, but also acknowledge you're right. He doesn't have quite the long term history (being 10-ish years old), and hasn't been nintendo exclusive for quite a while.
GENO'S A FREAKING MII COSTUME, AND IT'S THE SAME ONE FROM SSB Wii U and 3DS! :C
@Caryslan
I've been giving this a lot of thought, and my personal preference on this is actually based on my almost consistently being a Nintendo fan.
When Cloud and Sephiroth faced off, I only had a Nintendo system. Even decades later, the two hadn't arrived on Nintendo (until respectively recently), so I have no frame of reference for them. I didn't grow up thinking of Final Fantasy 6 as some amazing legend of a game.
No More Heroes began with Nintendo, and I was immediately involved and loving the game.
Obviously, the money is in the Fandom, so Sephiroth is the sensible choice.
But weirdly, it has been my love of big N that has led me to find this release as a mediocre surprise.
Anyways, I found the realization interesting and thought I'd share.
