Hackers have wasted no time with the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch - discovering its secrets before it was even officially released. Within just weeks, one talented individual known as 'stacksmashing' dug into the system's code and worked out how to get id Software's classic first-person shooter DOOM up and running.
While the results weren't exactly pretty, it was only just the beginning. The same hacker - once again, with the help of fellow coder Konrad Beckmann - has now got some more retro classics up and running like the original Pokémon, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Contra. Take a look below:
At the moment, getting these other retro titles working on the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch isn't exactly easy. You obviously have to physically open up the system to add more ROM files and even then, you'll need the assistance of custom hardware and some special tools.
The same hacker, stacksmashing, says they are looking to publish a full guide on how to unlock the Game & Watch.
Are you impressed by all of these games running on Nintendo's latest hardware release? Do you think the system should have included a larger library of games? Share your thoughts below.

Can't wait for Crysis Remastered: Game & Watch edition. It'll run better than the PS4 version
(kinda like how the Switch version of Crysis is better than the PS4 version).
Putting more effort than Nintendo themselves lol
I wouldn't mind having pokemon in one of these. Looks cute.
I wish nintendo would sell that, officially.
@Guest88 You do know they're loading Nintendo's games into a machine Nintendo made, right?
Does he have the actual cartridge's if not I going to tell Nintendo you are stealing their IPs and putting them on that little thing.
Really makes me wish the Pokemon Classic Collection would not have been fake news.
@PcTV I am aware yeah
@Averagewriter they'd probably need to write a custom rom.
Next week it’ll be running Witcher 3
This would be the smartest way to resell Pokémon red and blue at full price.
A limited-edition collector's product that will probably be rare someday?

But can it run Crysis?
@N8tiveT3ch
This makes me want a Game Boy Advance Classic so badly. Clearly they could do it and do it pretty reasonably. I jump to GBA, because they can easily put both Game Boy and GBA titles on such a release.
I'm in the shrinking number of people who wants their classic games obtained legally. I don't want to buy a Chinese piracy box to run a thousand roms dumped from Pirate Bay or wherever.
Wasn’t there just an article about the GBA running PS5? Well let’s see this game and watch run PS5!
If there’s a way to load more NES games on it, I could see myself getting one to have as a portable NES.
Only reason I didn't buy it, despite really wanting it, was that was only two actual games. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat if it was Mario 1-3 and Lost Levels, plus the game n watch mini game. But just Mario 1, LL, and the mini game? Naw. Not for $50.
We get it. If it can play games, it can be hacked lol.
@GrailUK for now, he’s toying with clever memory dump ... will it ever be a way to launch unsigned code, or use the usb c port, nobody knows for sure...
The inevitable occurred. Is awesome to see the g&w being able to run Xtra games. I'd love to be able to DIY install zelda or even if possible Mario-kart super circuit gba port. But I'd probably break it or loose the original roms. Hey game-on I love reading what is possible. 👍😊
Sound quality is pretty wretched sounding, ngl.
Still- Impressive work!
Hacking and Modding communities never cease to amuse and impress me to no end.
Apart from no 24 hour clock mode this thing makes a wonderful desktop clock. I don't care that it's only got 3 games. It's perfect for zoning out on Zoom and Webex calls. I put it right under the camera.
@Averagewriter
They could do it over the Game and Watch Gameboy Games
The big question is not CAN but WHEN it will run Skyrim!
I'd love to see Game and Watch Gallery played on one of those things, we've come full circle.
Yeah,.... im not really the biggest fan of the system. Its nice. but not more then that...
Nintendo knew this would happen. More people will buy the console just to hack it.
High definition next gen gaming right there.
I'd be willing to risk it. I'd swap out SMB2 (J) for SMB2 (US) and Mario Ball for SMB3 if 3 ROMs are the limit
@Torn I dunno, these types of invasive risky physical hacking methods aren't exactly attractive to the general consumer.
It's not like the Classics Minis where you just had to plug the console to your computer and download a program.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand How is the switch version of Crysis remaster better than the ps4 version? Just curious.
Just waiting for Metroid, EarthBound Beginnings, and a Kirby game (I'd pick KDL2, though KA is more likely). Punch-Out!! would also make a good choice.
@RaphaBoss Crysis on PS4 is a garbage remaster and has iffy textures, while the Switch version is kinda made FOR that console, meaning that the graphics are somehow better, maybe because the ps4 version's ray tracing stinks, and the graphics on the PS4 version isn't great for a remaster, and in many ways is WORSE than the Switch and even the original game. It's hard to explain, but check out the reviews of Crysis on Nintendo Life and Push Square (and their comments), those might explain much better than I can.
Just for a little teaser:
On Nintendo Life, the Nintendo Switch Version of Crysis Remastered got a 8/10, while on Push Square, the PS4 version got a 5/10.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Seems like they sacrificed too much just to have ray tracing in that version. Direct X ray tracing is pretty demanding just like RTX.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand
In what respect is Crysis for Switch better then the one for PS4? I'm considering getting it but I'm still not sure as to the version.
I love seeing Contra on here.
I've got it. It's a shame it's not user-updatable, as I would have loved if Nintendo added SMB3.

@HotGoomba___Rebrand
Wow! Thank you for this explanation, I was about to buy it on a PS4 sale. Now I'll do some more research and probably get the Switch version.
@PcTV Yeah, because Nintendo doesn't put them on there. So indeed, more effort than Nintendo has made.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Can you poop off with your ads?
@Thirteen1355 What's wrong with giving people recommendations?
I'm just explaining why Crysis on Switch is better than Crysis on PS4, that's not advertising...
@N8tiveT3ch They're 30 years old you idiot even I have ROMS of all those games- it's not copyright infringement if ur not selling anything and the game isn't currently in production.
Well, 2020 officially sucks @redpanda0310 called me a idiot...I need to go offline for a bit and think about what I said. Darn it.
@Heavyarms55
I guess N is so stingy because they believe that maintains the value of their IPs. Still they waste their IPs by letting them go stale too often. I have about the best option sans N releasing a Game and WatchnGBA which is a GBA micro with a late gen flash cart that holds about 20 games.
@Thwomp_Stomper
If they were going to do a pokemon game and watch then do yellow as that was the first gbc pokemon that could use the color screen.
@QuickSilver88 The value of their IPs are being destroyed because rather than selling them, piracy of them is rampant. And it's so rampant because it's really hard to impossible to get much of their legacy content on a vaguely modern device through legal means.
In a big sense, Nintendo has created the piracy problem by not providing a decent legal alternative. That doesn't make the piracy right or okay, but that has never stopped people before. Especially not in the age of entitled consumerism.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Whether Crisis is better wherever is completely irrelevant to the subject of this article.
@Thirteen1355 Did you even see my top comment, I made a joke on how Crysis on Game & Watch would've been better than Crysis on PS4, then I added that Crysis on Switch was better than on PS4, just in case anyone didn't get the joke.
THEN people asked me why Crysis on Switch was better than on PS4, so I explained why because that's the right thing to do.
So it's not relevant to the article, yes, but it's relevant to my JOKE based on the article.
Why do you even care, I'm not even being aggressive to anyone, being a jerk, being sarcastic, or even attempting to bother people. I'm just trying to help people who are asking a question, and if you have a problem with it, ok cool, but don't call me an advertiser just because I was asked the same question by two people.
Why the hell am I even wasting my time on you, just leave me alone, people like you always distract me from other commenters.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand Exactly. Why would you waste your time? I'm just a poor man with corona. Don't bother with me.
@N8tiveT3ch😬
