Re: Soapbox: I'm Causing The Slow Death Of Gaming Magazines, And It Hurts

Lone_Beagle

just my opinion --> applying the "24 hour news cycle" to video game development is just idiotic. Most often, there just is not that much going on.

The one thing the internet is good for is for indy game development --> it really allows for word of mouth to boost these games. Also, YouTube for some various tips and tricks & hints, but by and large, we would be better off reading a monthly magazine.

Re: Hardware Review: E.O.N. GCHD GameCube HDMI Adapter

That price is insane...

I just recently hacked my Wii U and play my GameCube games there. Even my Wavebird works with the GC adaptor on the Wii U.

For the price of this device, you would be better off buying a used Wii U and hacking it. And playing all the great Wii U games you may have missed...

Re: Nintendo And ROM Website Owner Looking To Avoid Lengthy Court Proceedings

Lone_Beagle

I just read the initial court filing by Nintendo at:
https://torrentfreak.com/images/nintendo-loveroms.pdf

My favorite part:
"For example, on October 15, 2015, Defendants promoted the availability of pirated copies of Nintendo’s games with the following announcement to the LoveROMs.com Facebook page: 'The complete Nintendo DS Collection has been uploaded, 5,000+ ROMs now readily available! Enjoy.' More recently, on January 30, 2018, Defendants posted the following announcement to the LoveROMs.com Facebook page: 'Direct Nintendo Wii downloads coming soon! We’re also adding some additional titles. Stay tuned.'"

I don't think that Mathias guy is going to get off easy even if he settles. I imagine he'll likely still have to pay a hefty settlement fee to Nintendo, but no where near as bad as if he took it to court.

Pro Tip: if you are running business, make sure your business model isn't ripping off a huge corporation (and posting it on Facebook).

Re: Kickstarter Project Garden Paws Striving For a Switch Release

Lone_Beagle

Ok, I'm a sucker for AC type games...I went and checked out their Kickstarter page...

They are a bunch of indies who have already released 5 games, latest one being "What the Box" on Xbox and "Rocket Fist" on the Switch, so they have a track record. There already is a playable demo, and the entry tier to back and get the game is only $20. It does look like you will have to pay again to get it on the Switch, when it is released in (they estimate) 2019...

I just might back this...

EDIT: I played the demo on my PC...I like it! The demo is very limited, but shows great promise. Interestingly, the in-game time runs faster (not like Animal Crossing, where the time stays pegged to real time) so you can accomplish a days worth of tasks in about an hour.

Re: Chinese Gaming Giant Appears To Rip-Off Zelda, Mocking Nintendo Fans And Lying In The Process

Lone_Beagle

News flash...a couple of immature Chinese trolls are just as bad as any other troll from any other part of the world.

I don't know much about the game...yeah, the art style seems like a pretty crude rip-off in some aspects. @Wanjia mentioned it was a Battle Royale, which I could see, as they would make a lot of money on a mobile platform.

Long story short, it isn't illegal to copy game mechanics, you can't copy (directly) in-game assets. You probably could imitate a lot of things and not get into legal trouble (which is why you see a lot of Zelda LttP clones here!), but most Western companies would not want the bother or the bad publicity. Currently in China, IP laws and protections are lax so this is going to happen. But this is the work of a few & not necessarily representative of everybody.
