Re: Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket Launches Worldwide Today

JayronAuron

Finally finished my 2 hour long time of opening free stuff. I know freemium mobile games love to shower you with rewards at the start to get you hooked, but I've never had one that required so much work to get it all. All in all I got about 110 cards, 5 levels, and a bunch of other stuff I'm still not entirely sure the use of yet. And Mewtwo EX with the animated background, so already doing better than expected.

Re: Super Mario Maker 2 Updated To Version 3.0.3, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

JayronAuron

As someone who watches Mario Maker Troll levels and enjoys them thoroughly...I know what they bothered to resurrect this game's patch cycle for. And it sucks.

I'm guessing they patched the broken track glitches that have been in use for over a year to pull off really interesting (read: not intended) teleports and other shenanigans. Yikes.

This definitely shouldn't be interpreted as a sign of the game coming back into prominence, it's probably more due to the publicity it received on GDQ.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Switch eShop Price Is $70 USD

JayronAuron

If this isn't a mistake, this is probably tactical on their part. Most nintendo games being $70 would raise far more backlash than TotK, since many would argue that Tears will still be worth it. This lets them ease into the new price a bit more cleanly to standardize it for future games thereafter. It'd draw far more backlash if it was another game with launch quality like Pokemon.

Re: Star Fox 64 Follow-Up Title Was Pitched For Wii U, But Retro Studios Passed On It

JayronAuron

As much as it sucks that the game was ignored completely, I will say...online dogfights strikes me as something that could have been very rough with Nintendo's mixed online gaming history unless it was developed by a studio that had experience making online multiplayer content (which unless I'm mistaken is definitely not something Retro does)

Still, the idea of a Star Fox version of Rogue Squadrons is intriguing.

Re: Nintendo Shuts Down Smash World Tour Championships

JayronAuron

Yea definitely encourage people to read the entire story on this. Nintendo by all accounts was supportive for 90% of this until something weird happened, and most of the issues until a point were due to the CEO of Panda allegedly doing shading things behind the scenes (I say allegedly but others have backed this up already as seen in the post above).

Edit: I should note since the article doesn't mention this...there are 2 Tournament Circuits: Smash World Tour, and the Nintendo-Sponsored Panda Cup. SWT is what was shut down, allegedly at the behest of the Panda Cup's CEO.

Re: Nintendo Switch Sports Ad Tees Up Golf For November Release Date

JayronAuron

To this day I wish this game had been held off on release till 2023 and had more stuff in it and the full roster of game modes. I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking, but the game had a lot of jank games and what I still feel like was one of the weaker versions of Bowling in a while. The games have been fun, but every time I play it I think of various customization options for games that I deeply wish existed. Basically it's a good game lacking the few things that could easily have made it a great game.

Re: Feature: The Spookiest Levels In Non-Spooky Games

JayronAuron

My all-time two from non-horror games:

Diamond/Pearl's Old Chateau: Imagine someone took Lavender town and added random probabilities that you can have NPC's show up in an empty house in adjacent rooms walking out. For someone who was used to NPCs standing still in D/P, and for Old Chateau to have nobody in it, the night I was playing and encountered this scared the heck outta me as a kid.

Warframe, Chains of Harrow: Okay this one is cheating...kinda. Warframe is not a horror game by trade...there are some ghostly creatures here and there that exist in the world, but no horror elements. But plenty of the lore in the game has the potential for horror elements to exist, and Chains of Harrow is their most concentrated effort to make a horror-dedicated quest. This one is part of the main story quests, and as someone who doesn't play horror games...I was not having a good time. Jumpscares, dark rooms, running from twisted void manifestations...and a horror-esque story premise all made for a really good horror quest and a really unsettling time for me. (also their recent Angels of the Zariman content is a decent runner-up)

Re: Mario Strikers: Battle League Will Be Supported With Free Post-Launch Updates

JayronAuron

Daisy is obvious I think...hopefully they don't use her as a tool to rope people back in after the hype dies off as I think that would do Daisy fans a great disservice.

I wanna see some random characters too honestly to give it that crazy Mario vibe. They did that in Golf with characters like Ninji, so I don't think it's very unrealistic. I especially wanna see Next Level Games try to develop the personalities of more B-list Mario characters like they've done in the past. I think for example Chargin' Chuck would be a particularly funny one, what with the classic American joke of him playing the wrong football (and yet strangely appropriate, given this game has them use their hands a lot)

Re: Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl Teases Character News

JayronAuron

Obviously (unless there's something I'm missing) this isn't anything related to Dexter's Laboratory since that's a cartoon network property.

I'm thinking that line may be more of a tie-in to the Smash competitive community news that happened around the same time, as "Back to the Lab again" has been trending a bit as a catch phrase borrowed from Smash Tourney Organizer "GimR" who was showcasing a big newly discovered technique in Smash Ultimate yesterday. They may have used this line to piggyback off that hype, rather than it being a hint to the character.

Re: It's Official, Nintendo Has Withdrawn Super Smash Bros. From EVO 2022

JayronAuron

The sad thing about this is the premise that Nintendo gets the say on whether the tourney can be run there, when history has demonstrated that even when they say "yes" they don't do anything to run it. I'm not going to get into the whole thing on Nintendo supporting tournaments...frankly they don't want to, so generally skilled organizers will go and do it themselves just fine. But the premise that those same organizers aren't allowed to do it without Nintendo's permission at EVO when they do it all the time otherwise is...odd.

Re: Nickelodeon's New Brawler Might Get Character Voiceovers In The Future

JayronAuron

Best guess is that most the budget went to extensive work on making the game as polished combat-wise as possible (I know people may not care for the idea of a game balanced for competitive play, but ideally that should help anyone playing it if done right) and setting up features like rollback netcode for good online. It's a much smaller developer, so it's not like they have Nintendo's access to Bandai Namco's experience with making/balancing fighting games (regardless of the argument of party game vs fighting game, their experience still helps make Smash polished). It's a weird tactic to be sure, but they gambit is probably to use the money from its (hopeful) success to fill in some of the stuff afterwards and make up for their lack of AAA money. Kinda like a Kickstarter-esque strategy but you get the meat of the game regardless of whether it's a success and then they fill in the rest later.

Assuming that's what's happening, I kinda understand, but I do wish they had been more transparent about that from the start. I think this game will be a decent success for the Nickelodeon brand alone, but time will tell. Right now my biggest concern is that we don't know if this game has any extra content modes at all to give people something to do when they tire of the main mode.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Receives Its First Update - Resolves "Several Issues"

JayronAuron

I'm a few hours into this game so far (first time playing it) and I finally lost patience with motion controls. I got used to flying okay after a bit of frustration, but there were two major sticking points that eventually drove me to switch to stick controls. 1) Sword swings keep being inconsistent to the point where stuff like thrusts take way too long to get and cost me a ton of hearts when the correct attack comes out wrong. 2) Having to constantly press Y to reset the neutral position due to it getting off-kilter every 5 seconds. Maybe I just need to re-calibrate my joycons, but it feels like they can't keep a consistent position at all. It's possible the confined and metal-heavy space of my desk is severely interfering with their signal, but it's unfortunate, whatever the reason. I love motion controls in games like Splatoon and Warframe, but after trying so hard to enjoy it in SS I finally gave up for now.

Anyway, I tried stick controls and it's better, but also doesn't feel intuitive with the camera/attacks. I wholeheartedly agree with @GhostRider419 that a toggle feature on L would go a long way to fixing this, as the lack of ability to move the camera around easily just feels very weird and jarring. Maybe I'll get used to it the more I play this game, but idk.

Re: Warframe Is Getting A Cross-Play And Cross-Save Update

JayronAuron

Definitely stoked for this, I know the devs have been trying to get something like this working for the game for the last two years or so, and I'm glad that is paying off. I will say that I might sadly end up using it to migrate off of switch tho, as the quality of the Switch version has plummeted in the last few months, between load times going up quite a bit and lots of things rendering very slowly or just not at all with UI. I'm not sure what they messed up to cause that to happen, as it never used to be this way. But at least at some point I'll have the option to jump around platforms depending on whichever one I feel like using.

Re: Soapbox: If The Smash Community Wants To #SaveSmash, It Needs To Start From Within

JayronAuron

@Dr_Lugae Honestly I'm not sure that is the reason for Nintendo doing all this. It might be now, but much of the suppression of the smash community began before long before most of the scandals. A lot of people figured the main reason was them not wanting competitive communities to drown out or discourage the casual players. That or, as addressed in that former Nintendo employee's twitlonger, to keep the current games relevant over past ones with minimal effort.

Re: Warframe's Heart Of Deimos Expansion To Launch A Little Later Than Planned On Switch

JayronAuron

Yea, saw the delay coming. Nintendo delayed the cert super-long last time their filesize exceeded the 25 gb level too. Not saying it directly has anything to do with it, but it might.

@Zimon certain warframes like Gara are really good for solo'ing interception. The AI is buggy in that putting up a glass barrier around the two consoles of first point you capture will have them running against the barrier while you take all the other consoles. An easy (if somewhat cheap) way to stall them out long enough to win. Option B is getting a decently strong warframe and going from one capture zone to the next so you are capturing the zones faster than they can take them back.

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

JayronAuron

Oh brother. Epic is trying to weaponize its playerbase so it can get away with defying other companies' terms of service and make more money in the process.

Just negotiate a better deal with apple/google like a professional company should, rather than throwing a tantrum over the fact that you are no longer content with the terms of service you agreed to in the first place. I don't think Google or Apple will be budging on this one if you are trying to cut them out completely.

Re: Paper Mario Producer Says Team Is "No Longer Able To Graphically Represent Individual Characteristics" In Toad NPCs

JayronAuron

I get their frustration, although it boggles my mind why they can't use npcs from kingdoms other than the mushroom kingdom. Characters like those of the Beanbean kingdom come to mind. Mario's stories have built up quite a catalog. I will say though that preventing new character creation does very much limit the intrigue and "fresh" nature of new games...there's only so many ways you can make a toad interesting.

Re: WayForward's New Switch Game Is Bakugan Champions Of Vestroia, Coming In November

JayronAuron

I stopped caring about Bakugan after Spinmaster cancelled the series and associated games a while back. I really enjoyed it back then, but imo, Spinmaster kinda killed it by over-complicating the base game to sell additional game pieces, while not really investing much in any sort of competitive circuit after the first two years of its life. I heard they are trying again, but I lost any trust in the series' longevity after having spent the money before to risk getting more of their games and stuff only for it to abruptly end.
