How Do You Feel About Mario After His 35th Anniversary? Nintendo Apparently Wants To Know

It was good, but two things brought it down: 1) The timed releases, and 2) No Galaxy 2.

It was fun. Having an exclusive game during that time, Mario 35, was enjoyable and made it unique. Hope they do these kinds of things for other character anniversaries.

The celebration of 35th Anniversary was a mess in my opinion.
It was not a celebration of anniversary by scrapping / discontinued the games after time limit.
I bought 3D All Stars just to secure Mario Sunshine but alas i found the FLUDD control schemes was a mess. I keep the games, not sure if i will continue the progress as i found other games i bought are more interesting to play than Mario 3D All Stars.

I would preferred 3D All-Stars to follow the remaster model of SNES All-Stars with graphical upgrades, but overall it was all right. Maybe a little lackluster, but I'm not broken up about it or anything.

I call myself a Mario fan a lot, but really I'm more of a fan of the characters and world. His games are good but nothing special like many claim they are. DK and Wario games on the other hand? 🤌👌

@Chozo : Same. I have never willfully chosen to play as Mario in any game featuring him in the roster (be it Smash Bros., Mario Golf/Tennis/Kart). His presence is so ubiquitous with all things Nintendo that I have no desire to play as him if given the option.

@TheBigK : I think a complete remake would have been overkill as Galaxy still looks great simply uprezzed to HD. Yes, it no longer has the same "wow factor" that it did on Wii back in the day, but it's still a very, very attractive game, as is Sunshine.

I just wish that they had ported the DS remake of Super Mario 64 instead of emulating the poorly aged original for the All Stars compilation.

Mario is an awesome series. But for how they handled the anniversary? I really feel they could have done a better job. There's the obvious Galaxy 2 and timed releases issues sure.

But I just think they could have done more. Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart 8 or Super Mario Party DLC? Just for a few ideas.

This would do nothing to inform Nintendo about my opinion regarding Mario's 35th anniversary. My answer is "I still like Mario", but my full answer would be that I still like Mario despite what Nintendo did with Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I have a good idea of why they did it (to drive sales in the short term and impress their investors as they wrapped up their fiscal year), but it was a move that was very anti-consumer.

I love Mario, but no Galaxy 2 makes me a sad boy...

FOMO be damned, I got my 3-D All Stars. And we all know we'll see those games again. Maybe next time with better Galaxy controls and Sunshine physics.

As for how I feel about Mario? I still enjoy his adventures. I've always liked Luigi more, but I've been trying to give Mario some love too. No denying we've had great memories. I kinda hope we get a new Mario adventure on Switch though, as I didn't care much for Odyssey.

I mean, it really want's much of an anniversary to be totally honest. A game ported from the WiiU, a random battle royale game, and a cash-grab collection of games that run better on Dolphin than on Switch. That's really not much of a birthday.

Thought it was great. All the false drama that was stirred up was insane though.

When i play mario kart with friends or family, everyone is laughing, even the people who doesnt game.

If they put one of these out for Link's anniversary, my response will be something along the lines of Nintendo ignoring their girl Samus' birthday over the favorite pointy-eared child in the family

What I want to know is why they stopped celebrating the anniversary if it wasn't in order to celebrate Zelda's. Because they aren't.

As revolutionary as it was at its time, now Super Mario 64 is one of the worst Mario games of all times. A proper remake with modern controls and camera movement, both are way beyond awful, is the least we as gamer can expect and Mario deserves. A proper festivity would have been to make a remake and NOT milk the cash cow...

This is Nintendo's way of saying, "You good?"

I've been getting teased about still playing his games probably since high school though. When i went to pick up my original copy of mario galaxy at launch the clerk who was probably half my age was giving me crap about it. I was 28 at the time.

I guess he thought i wasn't cool because i wanted mario instead of the latest call of duty. Ignorant punk!

My love for Nintendo mainly lies with the Zelda series, which Nintendo treated like crap for its 35th anniversary.

Funny how I never even thought about it that way. I don't care for Mario at all, never have. Much like Mickey Mouse he is just a mascot I have to put up with. Link, on the other hand, is the term for my alter ego, who was always named after me. It was I who had to save the world, I who had to fight, it was on my conscious to slay enemies or sneak around them. If Mario didn't get the princess, that was on him, not me.

Still annoyed that they removed Mario 35...but whatever, I got Monster Hunter. lol

I loved the anniversary. Hope they do more (but not like, every year lol) One thing that spoilt it was a small minority of bad spirited folk (this website included I fear) that couldn't get their head around a timed event and have no idea what 'anti-consumer' means. Quicker folk who just think in terms of making money go back to SONY and Microsoft, the better for me.

Mario's a cool guy, he's got great hops, just wish his boss wasn't so stingy (boo, timed release.)

For the first time ever, I actually feel a bit of Mario fatigue. Before the 35th kicked off I was excited for a potential sequel to Odyssey but now I hope they just leave Mario alone for a year.

I'm now concerned about what they have lined up for Zelda. I'm passing on Skyward Sword until I at least know a date for BotW2.

I'd honestly rather they marked more anniversaries (Donkey Kong, Metroid etc.) but with just one or two big announcements/releases.

The frustrating thing with Mario... why didn't Nintendo get 3D World out in 2019 or 2020? They've sat on it for ages and then release it at a time when we were inundated with Mario games. It's a really poor decision and it has definitely created fatigue for me.

It was a three game package that had a limited shelf life, until the end of March. Anyone with a Switch had plenty of time to get a copy. It wasn't a limited edition, there were plenty of copies available. And it wasn't very good. Certainly not for an Anniversary celebration.

Maybe Nintendo had bigger plans and Covid under things. But It is the lack of keeping gamers informed that leaves a bitter taste.

But having said that the new Switch and games that are almost certainly getting released this year, I think we're to have been part of last year's anniversary package.

Mario35 was the highlight for me, too bad they pulled the plug on that.
Also to all the people who said that FOR SURE Nintendo would release the games separately after the event... Well, where are they?

I still love Mario and co a lot. There’s something charming about that little Plumber and his games that bring out that childlike joy in most of us. I can go back and play Super Mario Bros 3 and still feel like that kid playing it on the NES, while appreciating it even more as an Adult, and then there’s Super Mario Galaxy and Odyssey, where the Adult in me really respects and loves the game design, score, soundtrack & worlds.

I’m not some weird man child, and yeah some of it may be my Dyspraxia talking, but every “Wahoo!” and “Let’s-a-go!” etc from Charles Martinez brings me joy. I even smile when I occasionally break out the Lego Mario sets.

The timed release of mario 35, no galaxy 2, the poor port of all-stars and Nintendo sending me a digital copy instead of the physical one I bought, really killed it for me.

Also would like to see more Bowser games. What's with the compulsion to kidnap pink dressed ladies. Did he miss out on the heritage of his parents castle? Or looking for (mushroom)world domination, then there must be a competitor to go against.

Mario is awesome. However the "Mario 35 has ended"-coverage by websites like Nintendolife has been terrible.

It was just a celebration, get over it.

I didn't particularly care for their choice of celebration, but that might have been different if COVID19 hadn't been a thing, and I'd been in Tokyo for the Mario theme park opening. ^^

@ChopperDX yeah, couldn't agree more. I was kind of excited when 3D all stars was announced until I found out it was a lazy cash grab and nothing was done to fix Mario 64's glaring flaws. I completely lost all interest

I'm pretty indifferent to Mario at this point. Mario World will forever be one of my all time favorite games but aside from that most Mario games don't really do much for me. The "new" series feels so generic. Galaxy, 3D Land and 3D World were pretty fun. Odyssey I thought was just ok.

I'm not sure I like the question. I still want more mainline Mario games, but I don't really care about a lot of the tie-in fluff featuring Mario.

I want a new "New Super Mario" game and also Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch.

I've never understood most of the criticism about the Super Mario 3D All Stars collection. Far as I'm concerned, the only thing that was handled wrong and/or annoying, was the timed availability, but the games not being remastered felt right to me.

The whole point of celebrating an older title is just that: to celebrate and enjoy the ORIGINAL title, just as it was, to relive that exact moment, instead of getting something like the latest remastered Zelda game.

And yes, the camera in Mario 64 is crappy as hell, but it was a landmark title regardless of that, and it should be experienced as it was, also for the people that never had the opportunity to play it back in the day, either because they never owned an N64, or simply because they weren't even born back then.

No kidding, i didn't appreciate the time-limited thing. It was annoying. And i dont appreciate also the ommission of this option on the above questions.

Guys at Nintendo should hire some interns and give them a callendar to check out for some landmark dates for like the next 10 to 20 years, that way, they won't forget aniversaries like this so they can be ready witch proper celebrations and no emergency ones like this or the incoming Zelda's. This is a shame for a company this big

(That said, yes, I bought the 3D All Stars before it disappeared; it's just on my extensive backlog — especially since those are all games I've already beaten at least once....)

I think the intent was there but the execution was flawed and felt hollow. I grabbed some items but there is more they could have done.

I still like the series, the anniversary did anything but make me love Mario more.

Here's a recap os Super Mario's anniversary products:

10th: Yoshi's Island

20th: Special Game Boy Micro and the rerelease of Famicom Mini Super Mario Bros in an Special package;

25th: Super Mario All-Stars for Wii in a beautiful package with soundtrack and an artbook;

30th: Super Mario Maker;

35th: Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Super Mario Bros 35, Game & Watch, Super Mario All-Stars for SNES app and Bowser's Fury.

So, yes, the 35th was the most packed anniversary. Also, it's rare to get Super Mario rereleases with enhancements (I can only think of SMAS, the Mario rereleases on GBC and GBA and Super Mario 64 DS, not counting the Switch ports), so Super Mario 3D All-Stars was truly Special even with the lack of Galaxy 2.

I feel the same way about Mario after his 35th anniversary that I did after his 25th... Happy for him but sad Nintendo chose to overlook Link’s anniversary.

I still like Mario, but I didn't participate because I disliked Nintendo's tactic.

@Noid nailed it! I hardly ever play as Mario, I do on occasion in party, tennis and golf. Never in Kart or Smash.

I mean ig....honestly he could retire and I wouldn't be phased. They've not rekindled the old style paper Mario yet, so leaves alot to be desired.

I'm not a Mario fan but each series has some amazing games.

Mario Bros 3, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Wii, Mario Golf (GBC) are the best.

It was cool and I hope Nintendo will do it again... time limited or not, I don't mind for it is a "once in a life-time" event.

I'd have been happier if they'd dropped all the anniversary stuff and just put the resource into an Odyssey 2. That would have been a much more fitting celebration IMO.

The Game and Watch Mario was a neat device but the fact is that I can play all 3 of the games on it via the 3DS.

I was so extremely sorry to see Mario go. I'm 45yrs old Nintendo fan. I've been playing Mario since the system came out. When I heard that Mario was leaving I made sure that I bought them all including Luigi's Mansion 3. I'll be buying Super Mario Maker 2 in May. When Mario Golf comes out I'll buy that also. I don't want to miss out on any Mario game. Actually I've been a Mario fan since I had my Atari 2600 and played the original Donkey Kong before he was known as Mario. I sure do hope that you bring Mario back. Nintendo isn't the same without Mario. I only play my Mario Animal Crossing Game. I'm also a Zelda game fan. So I would love it if Nintendo would bring back both franchises. I play on my Nintendo for hours with both franchises. Mario and Zelda made me a Nintendo fan. I don't bother with other gaming systems. Nintendo is the best. So please bring back Mario and Zelda. I only buy Mario or Zelda game on the eshop. I would also love it if Nintendo added Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the Switch eshop.

Participating in Mario's 35th anniversary celebration in no way influenced my decades-old perception of him.

No one even talked about 3d world + bowser's fury but that was probably my favourite thing about the aniversary. And I also never played any of the games that are in 3d all stars so that was also super fun. I didn't like that they limited the release for 3d all stars though because now people sell it on ebay for over 1k dollars (I feel kind of sorry for the people who didn't buy the game yet but still want to have it)

Totally agree, and there are tonnes of copies of 3D all stars for sale at stores and e-bay at the normal price, of course with a few very speculative listings thrown in, but no need to pay massive prices, as I am pretty sure everybody who wanted this game has pretty much bought it.

And as I said in my last post there are far more normal priced listings for all stars, no need to pay over the odds.

Played the hell out of the 2D Mario games when I was a kid. Mario Bros, Mario Bros 2, Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2 (6 Gold Coins), Wario Land. Then the 3D ones started coming out and I just lost interest. Was far too busy playing Zelda, Goldeneye, F-zero, Starfox 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Killer Instinct Gold by then.

Haven't really played any proper Mario games since then. I tried New Super Mario Bros but it just didn't feel the same so I never bothered with Mario much since.

I really enjoyed the anniversary, even thought it was a mess. I get that they went to make this event special, but Doug Bowser and the others must know that pressuring people to buy things before a certain date is a terrible way to celebrate. Removing the physical copies of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the Game &Watch console and all the merchandises because they are collection items, I can understand. But they must know that shutting down Super Mario Bros 35 and completely removing 3D All-Star from the eshop just because they see this as a celebration is really cruel. Because people would never had the chance to experience the 3rd creative battle-royale on a Nintendo console as well as 3 of Mario's adventures (which was supposed to have 4 games, I don't understand why they forgot Mario Galaxy 2). I really hope they will not repeat these actions again during the other anniversaries and during Mario's 40th anniversary, which will take place in 2025. They must know that we didn't like what they did. They will keep losing fans if they continue these dirty practices.

I've grown tired of Mario. the past few games did not keep me entertained (Odyssey). I would like to see them make an attempt at a more story driven mario game again like the Mario & Luigi RPG. without story these games don't hold my interest as much anymore.

@JayronAuron Nintendo has only ever acknowledged the anniversaries and done things for mario and zelda because those are their big selling staples

@Crescent Nintendo has no interest in mario rpgs anymore which is why paper mario has been moving away from the rpg elements

I like Mario, mainly in the party games. But my favorite will always be Toadette.
