I don't think we'll see a new main entry in the Animal Crossing series after this update. And I don't see the Switch 2 generation sticking around as long as the original Switch managed to.
Therefore, it would arguably make more sense to keep a new entry back as an early/launch title for Switch 3 to shift some units now that it hasn't got Mario Kart to fall back on (I believe we'll be getting a new main 3D Zelda entry on Switch 2).
I never got on with New Horizons for some reason. I played it for a couple of weeks and didn't touch it again. I'll definitely be checking this update out though, as it offers enough bells and whistles to differentiate it from previous iterations. Saying that, I really don't see the Switch 2 getting a new entry in the series after this.
Yiiissss! We love a Kate article around these parts! Couldn't agree more on "Can play cult classic Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward" factor in the comparison. ๐
This is one of the few games that I think should stay off Switch 2, and I say that as a massive Ninja Gaiden fan. I just don't see a port of this being optimised well enough to justify it. With an action game such as this, you really need it to be 60fps.
I have an original NES, that's in pristine condition (I had one in the 80s but had to sell it to upgrade to the SNES), but it's just a pain and expensive to set up to look good on a modern TV. So I'll either pick up a compilation collection, such as the Castlevania, Contra, Mega Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, etc, or just fire up NSO for convenience.
I do have a NES mini and Famicom mini too, but they just seem like another unnecessary step now, unless I'm looking to play a ROM hack like Mother 1.
A notorious character in the game industry, but his integrity always shone through his work. There was an Xbox 360 exclusive documentary about ninjas around Ninja Gaiden 2's release, and Itagaki's contributions and insights in that film were fascinating. It's worth tracking down if you can find it.
I also loved how much he hated his games being ported to PS3 back in the day, and always complained about the difficulty being watered down in the Sigma versions. He was certainly passionate about his creations.
@SuppressorSteve Neither MKW or Bananza offer new experiences. One's an underbaked version of what's come before (albeit with prettier graphics) and the other is basically Odyssey with a very repetitive mechanic. Arguably, Drag x Drive offers a new experience, but it's just not fun.
If you think your old Switch games loading slightly faster is a new experience, well, good for you I suppose.
These videos scream "Miyamoto vanity project". I love the guy, but there's no need to shoehorn Pikmin into everything just because they've not set the world alight as much as he expected them to.
Totally agree with everything PJ has stated in this article. MKW was incredibly disappointing for a Mario Kart game, especially after such a long wait. The open world is boring (not to mention incomplete due to missing P-Switch tracker). The tracks are not all that fun. The character select screen is a mess. A lack of traditional three-lap races. Overall, it was style over substance, whereas Sonic CrossWorlds is just more fun. It's as simple as that.
I've yet to play Silksong but these 'wild take' articles seem a bit forced. This is the same writer as 'you should play Silksong with the sound off', which, as far as I recall, not one person agreed with. Clicks are clicks though.
No 'wake from sleep' is a deal-breaker for me. Nintendo knew what was it was doing by not making the Pro Controller 1 fully backwards compatible with Switch 2.
I get the idea of trying to reinvent the genre, but this feels like a 'for the sake of it' instance. How can it be a 'Metroid' style game when it's open world? Maybe it can, I'm just not confident about it.
BotW was open world and Nintendo figured a big game would pan out the Switch's lacklustre launch line up, because there's no other 'must have' games on the horizon as yet.
Believe me, I want this the game to be the one I've been imagining for a decade at this point, but realistically I don't see that being the case.
Umm... Fever probably. As much as I love the Galaxy games, Fever is pretty much the only 'new' Mario-related game, so that. Yoshi doesn't count, and so far the pattern for Nintendo's Switch 2 games has been 'pretty but lacking' (at least for me).
"Up to" is the important detail here. Hitman was also "up to" 60fps before IO decided it was better to cap it at 30fps for 'improved performance'. And again with no upgrade path being available... Madre mia.
Camper Van is so cosy that I nearly nodded off watching its trailer. Not my type of game, but it looks good. The corgi hugging a gecko is actually what caught my attention about it though. ๐
@conditionals Well, instead of fixing the framerate they've just included a 30fps mode instead, which helps to a degree but it's not the fix we were expecting. And that's an old game at this point, so I don't have high hopes for this.
In fact, even on PS5 I imagine it'll have performance issues for the first year or so, as all IO games do.
Judging by the Hitman Switch 2 port, this is going to run like ass on Switch 2.
I do really like the look of this game though. So much so that it might push me into buying a PS5 this year. It would certainly solve my issues with Nintendo's Game-Key Cards push, and get around gimped third-party efforts on Switch 2.
@Warioware Yes, expense is a major concern, but also the size, extra weight, short battery life, and there's no 'must have on me at all times' Switch 2 exclusives in my collection yet.
I believe Gavin hinted at some in-depth UFO 50 articles in the near future, which I imagine would cover each individual game.

Some of the screenshots in the article look very blurry (apart from the text). Switch 2 clearly isn't the platform to play this on.
