We've seen some pretty crazy console setups in our time, but we didn't expect to see an Xbox Series X running on a Nintendo DS when we woke up this morning.
YouTube channel The Retro Future has shared a new video (above) that showcases Microsoft's latest machine – claimed by the company to be the world's "most powerful console" – hooked up to the tiny, low-resolution screen of an original Nintendo DS. Something tells us that Microsoft would prefer it if you experienced the Series X on a slightly better display, but where's the fun in that?
It's all made possible by the Nintendo DS TV Tuner – a rare, Japan-only DS accessory that was developed by Agatsuma. It's hard to pinpoint exactly how many of these were made, but Console Variations estimates that somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 would have found their way to stores.
The device would have originally been used to view analogue TV stations on your DS (hence the aerial), but by hooking up some AV cables and an HDMI converter, it can also be used as a simple display. Naturally, then, you could also pair up a Nintendo Switch, a PS5, a Wii U, or anything that uses an HDMI cable.
If anyone has one of these lying around that they no longer want, we're now gladly accepting donations. You know, for science.
Thanks to James for the tip!

"Play" more like "see"...
So currently this is the best way to play on PS5 and XSX ... got it!
At this rate, we'll be able to use the Game Boy as a television.
Please give us an easy way of doing the opposite. I’d love to play my (3)DS on the television.
Wow, that’s actually really cool. Pointless but very cool.
Call me when they've got it working on the Virtual Boy.
I used to have something like this for GBA, a Blaze TV tuner. I hooked up my GameCube and played Tony Hawk on the GBA screen. 13 year old me thought it was rubbish though so I took it back to the store for a refund lol
Well, it's a TV tuner. Most old handhelds had at least one of these.
Wii U Virtual Console exists, so I'll pass on this.
I had the same kind of thing for my Sega Game Gear. My dad used it to watch football at work, except the resolution was so low you couldn’t really see the ball.
Someone needs to get a Wii U hooked into this for a game of Mario Chase from Nintendoland. Just imagine having 4 people crowding round a DS showing split screen, while 1 other player gets the Gamepad. Usually the gamepad would be the smaller screen, but not any more...
@Markiemania95 I'd love nothing more than that. I even got those cables for the PSP for the same purpose
@ryancraddock Hold on, it’s using the DS’s GBA mode, right? So would it also work on an OG non-backlit GBA? Or... a GBA Micro...?
@Glitchling78 I think we had the FM radio tuner for the game gear, sadly not the TV tuner but I could be wrong!
Wasn't it the Gamegear that also had one
The DS had everything.
It even had a music player and a web browser.
Meanwhile, on Switch...
@ralphdibny
The Game Gear did have a TV tuner
So glad to see my boy Elliot on the website again.
@Zidentia I mean that I don't think I had the TV tuner, I only had the FM radio tuner
I'd be more interested about playing DS games on the big screen.
1990s SEGA is calling. they want their Game Gear TV Tuner back ;P where i played dreamcast on it - when my tv broke in 1999 xD
That's a pretty cool accessory.
Also really like the green theme on this article.
I had the Game Gear tv tuner too, at the time I didn't have a tv in my room so I used to watch tv on it all the time.
I definitely played Megadrive, Mega CD and even 32X games on it but it's such a long time ago I can't remember what other systems I connected it to. Maybe Super Nintendo, N64, Master system, not sure if I played Saturn, PS1 and original Xbox on it though.
Saw this video when it came out, had a good laugh.
