Update #2: The moment has arrived, folks – Katy Perry's 'Electric' is out now. Enjoy!
Update: Good Morning America has shared a sneak peek at Katy Perry's upcoming music video for 'Electric', the song created in conjunction with Pokémon (thanks, Serebii). Remember that you can pre-save the song at the link in our original article below.
Original Article (Tue 11th May, 2021 17:30 BST): Remember back in January when The Pokémon Company revealed that it'd be teaming up with Katy Perry to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary? Well, the time has come.
The pop sensation has taken to social media to reveal that her latest song, called 'Electric', will be releasing this Friday. You can already go ahead and pre-save it on Spotify if you're interested.
Fancy a quick tease? Here's a (very small) snippet:
Earlier this year, Post Malone also got involved with the celebrations by taking part in a virtual concert and releasing a special cover track.
Looking forward to giving Katy's new song a listen? Let us know in the usual place.

Ah I remember they mentioned this during that other event. I figured it had already happened at some point in the last two months, but I guess I was wrong.
Use mud shot right on Katy Perry's face!
It's Super Effective!
Eh... no thanks. Not my cup of tea.
Please don't suck, please don't suck. It would be great to get a pop song directly tied in to the video game world that was genuinely fun to listen to.
@gcunit I would argue we already kind of have that in the form of the original Pokémon anime theme song. You know, Gotta Catch 'Em All, the famous song sung by Jason Paige.
I know it's not really what you meant, but over here we've had the song in the top 2000 for several years now- currently sitting at 186, beating songs like Michael Jackson's Thriller, Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Guns 'n Roses, and so many more amazing classic songs. I think that makes it sort of count.
That's gonna be a no from me, dawg.
Didn't realise she still made music, the last time I checked she was feeling like a plastic bag...
Is it just me or does her neck look unnaturally long in that promo pic? Either some dodgy photoshop or in the Pokémon canon she is a Girafarig.
Not that I expected anything good, but that snippet sure is enough for me to hard pass.
Boy do I hate those vocaloid things that are all over the place nowadays, they're so annoying and unbearable.
Bring back M2M and Emma Bunton I say! 😜
Weird that among the few licensed Pokémon songs there are. They have one called Electric and another one called Electricity (By Honest Boyz & Lil Uzi Vert).
Also, I like that there's a female Pikachu on the preview photo, instead of what's often considered the default, male Pikachu.
It somehow perfectly encapsulates how out of touch Game Freak are that Katy Perry is doing a Pokemon song.

Not sure why people are so against this. I think its kinda cool tbh. Keen to to hear the song.
I'm good, I don't need to hear a song made by some random famous person person about a franchise long since dead to me. Good for fans of both her and Pokemon though.
We all liked video games before it was cool.
OMG A FAMOUS PERSON LIKES THE SAME GAME AS ME
Amazing what gets called news, sometimes..
You know, Andrew Huang did a Zelda inspired song called "Lost Woods" a few years back.
This is kind of awesome actually. And weird. I like it.
@Kimyonaakuma She released three more albums and got a baby since then. The last album dropped in September or so.
@Eric258 Me too.
@gcunit "Fun" should definitely be the key word here.
That Post Malone virtual concert (for as fine as it was) did not instill much confidence in me that this collaboration will be a celebration of the past 25 years, but more just an event that coincides with it.
Maybe Katy Perry's new song will change my mind, though...
Why is almost everyone above so negative?
I’m looking forward to it. I found the Post Malone collaboration enjoyable.
Katy Perry used Attract.
But it failed!
@CosmoXY Well at least you and I can have fun with it. 😃 Might even be a good song... it’s a song right? Barely read it lol.
I was hoping for the end credits song from the Detective Pikachu movie!
@Silly_G Katy Perry used sing it was very effective.
(Everyone fell asleep)
I wouldn't say i am looking forward to it but i am curious
We reached peak Pokemon Pop Song when Weird Al released Polkamon. The B-52s tried their hardest, but none could surpass it.
@sanderev : Oh, you... Have a like.
Better yet, perhaps she ought to use Z-Sing so the audience can fall asleep even harder.
I'm somewhat curious, who would the appropriate star singer to show for this Pokemon event that people be for folks to be less snide about?
Don't get me wrong, don't know this lady beyond recognizing hearing her name before, didn't even know what she looked like. And the Post Malone nonsense earlier in the year was painfully out of touch. But why ARE they so out of touch?
I suppose though it's a bit too unfair to bundle everyone into being against this, there's surely a market for this. Even commenters here, if sparingly. It's just...weird choice after weird choice from Pokemon as a whole, a continuous train of them since freaking Sword and Shield's announcement.
My gut response is "Clearing out the old guard for the new guard", this isn't intended specifically for the old fans but to make new ones of a new generation from outside the fanbase. But man is that a weird direction to go when also specifically celebrating how old you are.
@Clod do you realize that people not liking Post Malone or Katy Perry are actually the ones out of touch with pop culture? There are more "casuals" than die hard fans of Pokémon out there, there are just more casuals willing to spend money on new games whatever they might be, or buying merch, or streaming songs. Making collabs with popular musicians just appeals to a wider demographic.
You seem to have the picture pretty clear, so how come you don't infere it yourself that these event appeal to a giant mass of public, even if some people on specific videogame related forums on the internet say Pokémon is "out of touch".
I mean look at all the nerds here saying this is "cringe" or whatever when it's literally just a collaboration of one of biggest franchises ever with one of the most popular pop singers of the last decade 🤷♂️
@SimonCucho You seemed to have misunderstood. I do not mean out of touch with pop culture as a whole. I mean The Pokemon Company/Game Freak/Nintendo/Whichever scapegoat you prefer making weird choices in these musical talents that have nearly nothing to do with Pokemon and what the fanbase would know and like about it.
Of course there's the argument for blanket mass appeal outside the Pokemon fandom's niche appeal, that's clearly what they're going with. It's strange though they don't have something more like what Final Fantasy does with its anniversary concerts. Or Mario. Hell, Undertale in its short lifespan had something akin.
Since they're not interested in an orchestral approach and want this pop angle, by all means....so why not have these people do covers of, you know, the many versions of the Pokemon theme? Or music actually tailored to the series they're supposedly celebrating? As is, it's just the musician doing their regular business, with a Pikachu or something Pokemon related stapled to the side, all but unrelated.
I'm mostly interested in the J Balvin collab to be honest but I'll at least listen to it even though she's not my cup of tea most of the time.
But people here need to chill.... It's an officially licensed song by the Pokémon Company with a huge artist, no this doesn't happen every day. It's fine if you don't like her music or Pokémon, so just move on then, why the hell would you be commenting on news about things you don't care for?
@Clod Seems you're unfamiliar with Pokémon Symphonic Evolutions
@Silly_G
Speak for yourself! Her assets have been Super Effective with me since 2010...or, you know, whenever.
C-Dogg uses Bone Rush! (Shockingly) It Failed.!
Why are celebrities working with Pokemon receive such distain? I mean I understand not caring but throwing a fit, no. And why do people stigmatize this now all of a sudden when its been going on since the late 90's. Has everyone forgot about the soundtrack to the first movie which included Britney Spears, M2M, Christina Agulara and Nsync or were you not around for it?
@SimonCucho I am. Looking it up, shame it was not a repeat attempt here in my opinion.
Little more to add other than "Oh well". Would have preferred that as an anniversary celebration.
C'est la vie.
Nothing will ever beat Rita Ora's Carry On from the Detective Pikachu soundtrack. Nothing.
Does anyone remember when Lil Uzi did a song called "Electricity" for the Detective Pikachu movie.
@Jayenkai I mean did you expect something like this to go under the radar? lol
Katy Perry has no soul whatsoever. Just give her a bag of money and she'll sing about your product.
I kinda like it? I don't really know that much about Katy Perry to be honest so I can't judge her on how she is as a person or whatever but the song sounds alright, based on that sneak peek.
@TheWingedAvenger I liked a few of her earlier songs, but yeah most of what she’s made in the last few years have been about as generic as pop can get. Which in an odd way makes her perfect for doing this kind of collaboration.
@Glitchling78 OMG her neck does look long!
"I kissed a Pikachu, and... BBBRRRRRZZZZZZZTTTTTTT."
I'm looking forward to "Electric"
You know rayquaza deck is mostly electric types and some fire types
It also has the pokemon card eelectric
This actually sounds pretty good! But "90s pop icon?" This woman does know pokemon still exists right? It's like in all of the interviews for the sonic movie, the interviewers called Sonic "A character who was popular in the 90s" when he's still semi-popular today. Sorry for rambling a bit but this just annoyed me a bit lol.
It should be Ampharos up in that lighthouse surely? Silver fans amirite?!?!!?
Am i the only pokemon fan that only listens thrash and death metal or what? I am not into that kind of music, thanks but no thanks.
So much negativity with a sprinkle of misogyny!
I’m not a Katy Perry fan but she’s a talented artist and I like some of her stuff. This might be bad but it might also be good or even great. You might like it. If not, it’s not for you, never mind and move on.
She’s Electric
This looks tawdry.
Wahoooooooooooooo. Yet another vapid song from Katy Perry
That was nice, made me think of generation 7.
Watched it... So they've thrown in Pikachu and Pichu in the video, but they're not in it that much and they don't contribute to the video's "plot". No other Pokémons are in it. The song's lyrics has nothing to do with Pokémon, take Pikachu and Pichu out of the video, and it's just another generic radio tune with no connection to the franchise whatsoever. I know I wouldn't like the song, not my taste, but I was at least hoping for some campy Pokémon references, maybe some cheesy Pokérap or something that would have made it somewhat enjoyable, but no. It was just bland.
I liked that but I do enjoy a bit of cheese.
If only they used the furry version of Pikachu from the movie. That would have looked better in my opinion.
Alright, I can say that it was a nice enough music video and song. I'm back on board with this 25th anniversary celebration, if they can continue to keep showing some connection to the franchise.
And hopefully they'll find room for some unadulterated, pop-y, fun songs still. Just a little something you wouldn't normally hear on a Contemporary Hits FM radio station.
It's a nice enough song. But like @Quarth says, it's just a Katy Perry-song with some Pokémon added to the clip.
And yes, most Pokémon songs are like that. Except for the title songs and Pokérap.
@quarth I actually think this is what they wanted to achieve. They want it to appeal to a broader audience, not just pokemon fans .
Because it’s not about pokemon radio stations are able to broadcast it. People get curious, and will find out it’s actually about pokemon.
Smart marketing move if you’d ask me.
Raichu deserve some love too.. I dont see him/her
Yeah it turned out a little bit generic unfortunately. It's still an okay song but certainly doesn't have that wow factor you'd expect from something like this.
They should take a hint from Super Mario Compact Disco.
Oh well, the song is still nice enough! Don't love it but definitely don't hate it either.
This won’t even chart. I’ll bet £50 this won’t enter the UK Top 100.
Is math related to science?
@Friendly They could've put some more mons in the video and make them play a more active role though. But I get what you're saying.
the song is ok. the video is cute. I like it.
@lyle_catcliffe you may want to rethink that it’s alright in the top 20 on iTunes and it’s only just come out. I think it’s a pretty decent enough song to be fair.
@nessisonett 😂 the song would’ve been a really good tie-in ten years ago.. Hardly likely to inspire a new generation of players
It's okay I guess but you wouldn't know it had anything to do with Pokemon if you didn't watch the video. I much prefer the Post Malone concert we got earlier this year. It actually had some Pokemon music weaved into some of the songs (like Only Wann Be With You). That one also introduced me to PM and I'm a huge fan now.
Katy Perry is very good. First impression, the song is decent.
Electric Avenue is better.😉 "and then we take it higher"
not as catchy as some of her old hits
Wow, someone put in a LOT of work on that crocheted dress. It's a beautiful piece.
Wait. There was a song? Oh yeah, that was cute. Pretty much exactly what I expect from Katy.
Missed an opportunity to riff on "Bob Dylan going electric" with the kid in the video, though. There was a perfect moment for it, I was hoping they would do it, and... nothing.
@PBandSmelly LOL nice 👍
And haven’t had the chance to hear it yet (if it’s out this early?), but actually kind of excited. Sort of a casual fan of Katy and Pokémon alike, so should be cool.
Katy Perry may not be my favorite pop star, but I’m glad Pokémon is still around. And if she helps bring in new fans to the series and helps keep it in the mainstream, then I’m happy. It will be awesome to experience Pokémon with my kids and grandkids.
With that being said, I really wish they would grab a new upcoming pop punk band, and collaborate with them on a song. That would be my jam.
Hmm a bit forgetable that Song.
Maybe just not my taste.
The song is actually better when you listen it the 2nd time. I like it.
It sounds like nearly every other manufactured song she sings that I have heard. Bland and over produced.
I like it. It's very Pokémon, in a lovably 90's cheesy sort of way. lol
That's the most bland uplifting song I ever heard. About as exciting as buying kitchen sponges on Amazon.
Also, using a guitar in a video of a song that has zero identity to guitars is sad. Why not put that girl up there on stage with a casio with RGB lights so it goes with the song? Is it that the idea of the guitar is cool but actually using it is too much for the bubblegum brains this is targeted to?
If you want to compare this to a real uplifting song, take a listen to Cruxshadows 'Birthday'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkPxm9lE0oY
Huh. It’s a’ight.
Edit: Am I the only who would’ve appreciated a little more effort to make Pikachu realistically interact with his environment? Like no stool wobble or anything.
Other than that, I guess it was fine. 🙂
Nice video and song...but take out pikachu and pichu and it has NOTHING to do with Pokemon.
It sounds like any other Katy Perry or Top 40 pop song out there. Even the lyrics are pretty generic.
Where's Ryan Reynolds?
I'm an old guy who doesn't listen to Katy Perry, but her face and makeup sure remind me of a young Boy George. Did a quick online search, and apparently I'm not the only one.
I was expecting typical current pop garbage, but boy did they really phone this one in.
Empty meaningless lyrics (which was expected), but not even a disguised reference to Pokemon. Then the Pikachu and Pichu interactions were lazy AF.
If she’s a fan, this has gotta be pretty cool for her.
As with most kids stuff, cringe.
It wasn't Mozart, but the tune was upbeat. Kids should dig it. Maybe she's a legit fan
Song gets better towards the end, pokemon are just aimlessly chucked in for no apparent reason.
Dreadful song!
@gcunit Here you go. People Under The Stairs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeOC9xbFZCU
woah and its not very good, almost like nothing good has come from pokemon in the last 5 years
Here is a better pokemon song for you. (Not a rick roll, I promise)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCrLMwDz5qE
I prefered the Charli XCX song for Nintendo theme park
@elias84631
Ditto.
So glad Mario got this treatment for his 35th Anniversary.
OH WAIT
As previously mentioned the issue with the song is the lack of connection to Pokemon if you remove the video. The video itself was cute although the song was a little on the generic side but dang, some of the comments here are awful.
Is an ok song with a gal and an electric rat, chill
@Outerdragon looks like I was right. It didn’t chart. Katy Floppy Perry.
@lyle_catcliffe um it did?? You said it wouldn’t even reach top 100 🤦♂️
@Outerdragon tell me what number it reached then.
@lyle_catcliffe sorry my bad seems like it wasn’t in the top 100 after all.
