I'm not interested in Frontiers myself (none of the 3D Sonic games really grab my attention at the moment besides the Adventure duology) but if I had to make a prediction on how this'll go in terms of a general consensus, I'd say it'll be around a 7 overall: some pretty great ideas and execution let down by a general lack of polish. I'd say the Sonic fans will love it though (I've already seen a few on here who absolutely adore it and that just makes me really happy ).
I've been very vocal with my criticisms about Frontiers basically ever since the reveal. So let me be the first to say that I am absolutely stunned....that I'd like to defend it. Now keep in mind: this is from someone who has absolutely zero interest in playing 3D Sonic right now. However, from what I've seen online, the game seems to be very fun yet if very unpolished romp (the quintessential 7/10 game if you will) so a score that low seems like a bit of an over-extension.
The Switch version is absolutely the worst (not helped out by the fact that SEGA themselves claimed it would be 'on par' with PS and Xbox >:l) but 4/10 worthy? That's probably a bit much for me.
Also I saw the user score for this at 9.1 earlier and nearly spat out my drink at the disparity (it's now at 7.6 but even still, that's such a stark contrast).
If they're so 'easily delivered', then why are you giving us one a month on NSO HMMMMMMMMMM? As for my personal thoughts, I'm pretty split down the middle. The brand new games that Nintendo have been making, especially since the Switch era began, have been brilliant and utterly essential for anyone interested in the medium. However, as someone who completely missed out on generations like Gamecube and Game Boy/Advance, I eternally yearn for the games on those systems to come back on Switch (being able to play them both on the go AND on a TV would be incredible).
Pretty good overall. I don't think there was any singular thing that utterly wowed me during the show (apart from Pepper Grinder because WOW does that look good) but it was moreso a collection of extremely solid announcements. The main ones that interest me include:
Pepper Grinder: You need only refer to my comment under it's article to know my full thoughts but to sum it up: god I can't wait to play Drill Dozer for the first time.
A Space for the Unbound: I'm a sucker for slice-of-life with a supernatural edge and this scratches that extremely specific niche. Hopefully it has a good story!
Have A Nice Death: this one's been on my radar ever since I saw Ray Narvaez Jr play it on stream one time and I'm very happy it's finally coming to Switch. Immediately placed in the wishlist!
The highlight of the show for me. The way every action just feels so visceral and crunchy with that gorgeous pixel art backing everything up feels so goddamn satisfying to look at. I've never played Drill Dozer myself (though have absolutely wanted to since it both looks fantastic and is one of the few non-Pokemon games Game Freak worked on) but I am highly considering picking this up, Devolver and Ahr Ech seem to have hit a home run with this one!
And of course it also happens to be the one game from today's Indie World with no concrete release date/month. Why is the world cruel.
Hadn't heard of this one before today but I saw a lot of people who were very happy this is coming over so I'm definitely interested (especially as someone who grew up on Cooking Mama)!
The specificaton of adding stuff to the Expansion Pack instead of everywhere else concerns me (RIP to everyone paying the $20 tier I guess) but I do like how they've confirmed that they're going to continue the trend of adding DLC to the EP since I think that's a brilliant idea (my guess is that we'll get Splatoon 3's DLC when that comes out in addition to maybe adding some older ones like BOTW or Pokemon).
Considering how we've gotten either Pokemon or full on outfits from play record rewards before, this is certainly a bit....underwhelming (though hopefully this means that phone cases will be a customisable thing similar to clothes and such).
The designs are utterly brilliant though (big fan of the Arc Phone being on...well an actual phone).
Can't keep this d***head out no matter how hard you try. I'm so relieved they're continuing Raid Events though. SwSh is over 3 years old at this point and those events still kept me coming back all those years later so to see them return in SV makes me monumentally happy. And you can get special marks for catching these 7-Star Raids? YES PLEASE!
WOW. WOW WOW AND WOW. That trailer was fantastic! Showed just enough so that it didn't feel like it was spoiling anything major, showcased the return of some fan favourites (DRAGAPULT YESSSSSSSSSS) and showed what seems to be a past vs future Donphan evo! This is unironically one of my favourite SV trailers, cannot wait for the 18th!
Also, I've been absolutely dying at this image. 'Ey, whatta you lookin' so smug about?'
Calling it now: Metroid Prime 4 is going to be the Switch 2's BOTW where it's announced very early for the previous system, is stuck in development hell for nearly half a decade and then releases as a launch title for the next system up. Don't lie: you could definitely see it happening.
Only one of these that I grabbed this quarter is LGPE, though that's mostly down to already owning most of the games on here.
Speaking of LGPE though, it seems as though it's finally going to be pushed out of the top ten if pre-order numbers for SV are any indication which I find to be utterly fascinating. The only thing that can knock Pokemon out....is Pokemon itself.
I will be grand with literally anything but starter evos. I'm aware they've been leaked but that doesn't mean the surprise should be ruined TWO WEEKS before launch for those who've avoided them like the plague. I'll check out the title for this before actually watching the video and if it says something along with lines of 'starters' or 'partners' evolving, my internet sabbatical will begin sooner than expected.
Also Paldean forms feel like they were a fever dream and never actually existed so one other than Wooper would be nice.
Firstly, I'm not the biggest fan of Decidueye myself and even I think saying their Hisuian Form is bad is a bit much (especially when he's a wandering samurai and not a horse-archer). Secondly, the Kalos Trio being 3rd from last is an absolute travesty (Greninja is great don't get me wrong, but Chesnaught/Delphox are just as, if not more, interesting in their respective fields!). Lastly, putting Unova's trio in the top half is....certainly contentious (I like all three of them myself but I'm not going to sit here and tell you they deserve to be that high).
Almost entirely agree with the Top 3 though, Gen 4's trio is easily the most overall great and absolutely deserves to take the top spot (Torterra my beloved).
A nice way to spend a half hour, will definitely try and tune in myself. I'm thinking it's going to focus on some of the games shown in the last Indie World (One Crab's Treasure, Gunbrella, etc.) but I'd be more than down for some surprises.
Also, I don't want to brag but I literally called this exact thing happening last week in the Direct thread.
I'm going to assume this means that HOME support won't be too long after launch if they're specifying that GO will be able to link up to it through HOME? I sure hope so because I don't think I ever want to go through the pain of constantly getting baited on when HOME support will be coming like I did for BDSP/PLA.
Having the Roaming Form for Gimmighoul be GO exclusive is also really cool as well.
Absolutely adore this little fella. From a design standpoint, he's alright: don't love him, don't hate him, I just think he's a neat little guy. But from a concept standpoint? Having two forms that are both unique to completely different games that have you searching for the Roaming variant in order to get the coins necessary to evolve the Chest variant? OH MY GOD IT'S SO GODDAMN INTERESTING.
It's going to be such a tough decision deciding between this guy and Greavard as my Ghost for the region, I love both of them so much.
I was very surprised with how much I enjoyed the original Star Fox when I played it for the first time a few years back and, while I absolutely consider 64 to be the far superior game, I'd definitely be down to play a mod that expands upon the original.
Wait damnit, I didn't talk about modding/piracy. Uh...umm....cease & desist am I right? Haha....ha....
What the f*** is happening, this is genuinely one of the most bizarre 'reveals' I think I've ever seen. A random Pokemon themed around....coins of all things is appearing in....GO of all things and now there's just a menacing website telling me to 'observe the chest'. WHAT IS GOING ON.
When I'm partaking in birthday celebrations (happy birthday to me), I'm going to be getting some Splatfest prep done in Splatoon 3 (going to try and get the elusive dab before Splatfest rolls around) in addition to dipping into my backlog with games like Double Dragon NES and maybe even Prehistorik Man.
Not going to prioritise it though since I'd much rather spend my birthday relaxing with my family
I'm not going to look at it myself (since we're only 2 and a half weeks from launch and I already have a pretty good idea on what they look like) but I'm just curious how something like this could've happened. Meltan was a Mythical and made a moderate amount of sense to reveal in this special kind of way. This on the other hand? It's just a regular Pokemon. And if it is just a regular mon then why the hell is it already in GO's files? Before all the Hisuian forms have been added at that! It's a weird situation, that's for sure.
Been waiting for how they would phrase it to see whether it would be all starters or just the Paldean trio. Now that I know it's all of them though? TEAM WATER ALL THE WAY BABY (even if Quaxly is my least favourite of Paldea's lineup).
Considering how it's basically Final Fantasy crossed with Stardew Valley, I'm not entirely surprised. I'm not interested in Harvestella myself but I can completely understand the pain of trying to get out a review for something as presumably massive as this so I don't mind waiting whatsoever.
Action games are a genre I feel like I'd like (I certainly adore watching them) but have never actually bit the bullet and grabbed one of them funnily enough. DmC has always been the one that's piqued my interest the most (big shocker: the Capcom fanboy likes Capcom games) but I've always been debating whether the Switch versions of the original games would be the best way to start them. I'll probably make a decision once Pokemon comes out though.
@RupeeClock I wouldn't even mind that to be honest. Handheld is how I played the entire original Ace Attorney Trilogy back from August-October of last year and I could easily see myself doing the same for Ghost Trick (though I feel a PC release would be decently straight-forward with keyboard and mouse filling in for the stylus).
I couldn't care less how they release it though: like I said before, this is one of my most wanted games ever made and I will take ANYTHING so long as it comes to modern platforms.
Though whilst we're here, there is another text-based DS game that I'd love to see come back....
DON'T YOU DARE PLAY WITH ME CAPCOM.
You don't understand dude: I've wanted to play Ghost Trick for literal YEARS. If this ends up being real, I'm genuinely going to explode with excitement. CAPCOM PLEASE I BEG OF YOU.
I think a certain @Astral-Grain will be very interested in this.
Seeing this headline and Swery's name crop up again reminds me how much I'd love to play the two Deadly Premonition games at some point. To me, they are an absolute enigma of the video game landscape: they can be riddled with some of the most glaring flaws a video game can have (stiff animations, abysmal frame rate, etc.)....but somehow, despite it all, still manage to look incredibly interesting and engaging every time I see them. I'd love to pick the two of them up sometime, they look like fascinating games and, if I like them, I'll probably end up liking this new project as well.
I'm going to try and not watch any trailers up until the game's release now that we're only 2 weeks away, but one thing that kind of blew my mind from the little I saw from this trailer is how the school has a free camera inside. We saw a smidgen of this in Legends Arceus with the Galaxy Team HQ and the Clan Settlements, but to see it expanded to such a large scale is so, SO cool. I cannot wait for this to come out dude.
I can only imagine the grilling 1 is going to get in due time....
I am so damn excited to finally play this. The only Mario Party game I've ever actually played was Island Tour on 3DS (which I actually really enjoyed funnily enough) but I've always wanted to play one of the proper mainline entries at some point. And now that both 1 AND 2 have dropped? 3 days before my birthday at that?! We're going to be partying all year long
I actually just grabbed my code at my local Smyths yesterday. I didn't have a clue that this was on (I went in to ask some questions about sending my Switch for repairs) and the notice for it just so happened to be sitting on the counter. I asked about it and was immediately given it. Fair to say that'll be a nice thing to redeem once my Switch woes have been sorted out XD
Mario Party 1, 2 and 3's soundtracks are so quintessentially 'Nintendo 64' (between stuff like the high-hats, unabashed MIDI instrumentation and lovable compression of it all) and it's fascinating to hear insight from the person who made them all those years ago on the creation process of them (with some of my favourites being the Title Themes, Wario's Canyon, Space Land and Horror Land just to name a few).
Will say though: of all the genres to describe MP1's music, 'big band jazz' was perhaps the last one to come to mind for me.
A fun fact that I just learned while looking into these games in preparation for their arrival: this is the first time Mario Party 1 has ever been re-released! A bit mad considering the series' pedigree, but I suppose those palm-burning minigames probably had something to do with it.
Super excited to play these once I renew my subscription though (especially when this comes out 3 days before my actual birthday XD)!
The first thing that came to mind for me when reading that headline is that one image of Belle Delphine and twomad at Twitch Con (....there's a reason I'm not showing it here).
This is pretty cool though. I definitely agree @ZapNCrap in that it would've been nice to see all the confirmed cast members come together and dress as their roles for Halloween (I would've killed to see what Jack Black as Bowser would look like IRL).
Never really played any Simpsons game myself (only have a vague, hazy memory of playing bits and pieces of The Simpsons Game on DS at a friend's house) but I'd love to play Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game (THE PROPER ONE) at some point. Probably not anything from the SNES era though, I've heard some of those are BS hard for the sake of being BS hard (kind of like the NES TMNT games now that I think about it).
Mario's stache is magnificent and I will not hear any slander made against it.
Pretty good list overall though. A few I would add here as well would be Soseki Natsume (Great Ace Attorney), Octolings (Splatoon), Mike Haggar (Final Fight), Reinhardt (Overwatch) and Slayer (Guilty Gear).
Also the fact that you put Matt above both Wario, Waluigi AND Grossberg when he doesn't even have a stache is utterly criminal.
@nessisonett I'm thinking more of public perception. Whenever most Doctors are replaced, the general feel is sadness and remorse. When Whittaker left however, all I really saw was a lot of 'good riddance' posting which, to be honest.....I'm kind of in the same boat. Her tenure wasn't terrible per se, but compared to my personal favourite eras like Tenant's, it certainly felt as though it was lacking something.
Probably could've worded my comment better in hindsight though, no doubt about that.
Of course they decide to add a Whittaker costume right after she was booted from the role. That's certainly some unfortunate timing right there.
These are very cool costumes though. On a side note, it'd be a cool touch if, whenever you respawn with these costumes, it has a bright yellow glow similar to when the Doctor regenerates. That'd be pretty neat.
I know I just talked about a Pokemon moment in the last spooky article, but there's only one thing that comes to mind for me in regards to this question: N's Room from Pokemon Black/White.
Imagine the scenario: you're a 7-8 year old playing through your very first Pokemon game. You run around the region catching anything that piques your interest and getting through it relatively painless (save for Skyla's Gym Puzzle grumble grumble).
You make it to the Elite 4 to try and battle the Champion who's skill you had heard so much about and succeed....only to be beaten to the punch by the leader of the evil team (and your rival). From there, the castles bridges crash into the league and it's all go-go-go: Team Plasma have taken over and it's up to you and the Gym Leaders to take them down. As you storm through the castle, you move into each room you find to talk to the grunts, heal your Pokemon, all sorts of stuff, not deviating from the established European gothic aesthetic. And then you get to N's Room.
A room completely unlike the rest, and with what can only be described as the most chilling song ever put in a Pokemon game, it tells the story of the innocence and psychological manipulation of a gifted child all in one.
Long story short: Pokemon can be more than just about disturbing animals. It can tell the disturbed stories of the people inhabiting the worlds as well.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Sonic Frontiers?
I'm not interested in Frontiers myself (none of the 3D Sonic games really grab my attention at the moment besides the Adventure duology) but if I had to make a prediction on how this'll go in terms of a general consensus, I'd say it'll be around a 7 overall: some pretty great ideas and execution let down by a general lack of polish. I'd say the Sonic fans will love it though (I've already seen a few on here who absolutely adore it and that just makes me really happy ).
Re: Review: Sonic Frontiers - A Bold But Ultimately Failed Attempt At Something New

Re: While Old Games Are Easily Delivered, Nintendo Is Focused On New Experiences, Says Miyamoto

I do agree with @Buizel though: why not both?

Re: Round Up: All The Games From Nintendo's Indie World Showcase - November 2022
Pretty good overall. I don't think there was any singular thing that utterly wowed me during the show (apart from Pepper Grinder because WOW does that look good) but it was moreso a collection of extremely solid announcements. The main ones that interest me include:
Re: Pepper Grinder Is The Unofficial Drill Dozer Sequel We've Been Dreaming Of
The highlight of the show for me. The way every action just feels so visceral and crunchy with that gorgeous pixel art backing everything up feels so goddamn satisfying to look at. We saw a smidgen of this in Legends Arceus with the Galaxy Team HQ and the Clan Settlements, but to see it expanded to such a large scale is so, SO cool. I cannot wait for this to come out dude.
Re: Review: Mario Party 2 - Party Like It's 1999 With One Of The Best In The Series

Re: Pokémon Sword And Shield's Latest Limited-Time Distribution Event Gets Online Access

I'm a big fan of the colour palette used myself, but other than that?

Re: Random: Yasunori Mitsuda Reveals Almost 200 Songs Were Scrapped From Mario Party's Soundtrack
Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Two More Games
A fun fact that I just learned while looking into these games in preparation for their arrival: this is the first time Mario Party 1 has ever been re-released! A bit mad considering the series' pedigree, but I suppose those palm-burning minigames probably had something to do with it.
Super excited to play these once I renew my subscription though (especially when this comes out 3 days before my actual birthday XD)!
Re: Random: Peach's Mario Movie VA Anya Taylor-Joy Dresses Up For Halloween
The first thing that came to mind for me when reading that headline is that one image of Belle Delphine and twomad at Twitch Con (....there's a reason I'm not showing it here).
This is pretty cool though. I definitely agree @ZapNCrap in that it would've been nice to see all the confirmed cast members come together and dress as their roles for Halloween (I would've killed to see what Jack Black as Bowser would look like IRL).
Re: Poll: What's The Best Simpsons Game?
Never really played any Simpsons game myself (only have a vague, hazy memory of playing bits and pieces of The Simpsons Game on DS at a friend's house) but I'd love to play Hit & Run and The Simpsons Game (THE PROPER ONE) at some point. Probably not anything from the SNES era though, I've heard some of those are BS hard for the sake of being BS hard (kind of like the NES TMNT games now that I think about it).
Re: Feature: The Best Moustaches In Video Games Ranked
Mario's stache is magnificent and I will not hear any slander made against it.
Pretty good list overall though. A few I would add here as well would be Soseki Natsume (Great Ace Attorney), Octolings (Splatoon), Mike Haggar (Final Fight), Reinhardt (Overwatch) and Slayer (Guilty Gear).
Also the fact that you put Matt above both Wario, Waluigi AND Grossberg when he doesn't even have a stache is utterly criminal.

Looks like Mei just got....left out in the cold.

Re: Fall Guys Goes Even More Wibbly-Wobbly With New Doctor Who Cosmetics
@nessisonett I'm thinking more of public perception. Whenever most Doctors are replaced, the general feel is sadness and remorse. When Whittaker left however, all I really saw was a lot of 'good riddance' posting which, to be honest.....I'm kind of in the same boat. Her tenure wasn't terrible per se, but compared to my personal favourite eras like Tenant's, it certainly felt as though it was lacking something.
Probably could've worded my comment better in hindsight though, no doubt about that.
Re: Fall Guys Goes Even More Wibbly-Wobbly With New Doctor Who Cosmetics
Of course they decide to add a Whittaker costume right after she was booted from the role. That's certainly some unfortunate timing right there.
These are very cool costumes though. On a side note, it'd be a cool touch if, whenever you respawn with these costumes, it has a bright yellow glow similar to when the Doctor regenerates. That'd be pretty neat.
Re: Talking Point: Which Scary Video Game Moments Gave You Nightmares As A Kid?

AND IT GOT EVEN WORSE IN BW2.
Long story short: Pokemon can be more than just about disturbing animals. It can tell the disturbed stories of the people inhabiting the worlds as well.
