Re: Nintendo Life Weekly: New 2016 Sonic Game Hinted, NX Release Predictions and More

ErrantEmbers

Aside from Sonic Generations, I really have not enjoyed a Sonic game in a long, long time. Sonic Rush on DS was pretty good but ultimately forgettable, as were the Sonic Advance games. Heroes was alright but again forgettable. Adventure 2 was fun, did not like Adventure 1, but no Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles has truly kept my interest and stuck with me long after its over. I was shocked how much I loved Generations though. THAT'S how you make a good Sonic game.

Re: Japanese Analyst Claims NX Could Launch As Early As October, Will Eat Into Wii U And 3DS Sales

ErrantEmbers

I'm certainly curious about the NX, whenever it comes out, this year or next, but I can't say I'm excited for it. Besides not truly knowing what it is or how it will work (we all have some ideas but no one knows for sure) Nintendo just hasn't been doing it for me lately. Not just in the last few years but in the last decade. Growing up Nintendo was my life - with the NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube. But then with the Wii it all changed. They catered to casual gamers, tried to be experimental with their unnecessary motion controlled remote which hindered the gaming experience for me. PS3 satisfied my gaming needs last generation but Wii certainly didn't. In fact, if I got rid of my Wii I wouldn't even miss it. And with Wii U it looked like it was going to return to the glory days at launch but fell short very fast. There are some really excellent games for the system but there's just not enough. And I'm tired of buying two consoles and a handheld every generation if I want to experience all (or most) of the best games each generation. I can't play both the newest Elder Scrolls or Final Fantasy AND Legend of Zelda or Mario games if I only buy one console. I have to buy two and a handheld. The Wii U has not only been underperforming in sales, it is easily my least favorite console I've ever owned. For one, I hate the gamepad, not because it's bulky and because of the touch screen but because it's unnecessary and needs to be charged every 2 or 3 hours, so basically I stay plugged into the wall as I play. Wii U has literally zero third party support. They really underestimate the value of third party games. And while I enjoy the 3DS I really don't think I'd miss it if I sold it off. The games I've played for it were fun but ultimately forgettable. I feel like Nintendo has been focusing too much on gimmicks and throwaway games just to make a sale rather than modern classics that will be played over and over again for years to come. The way I see it, NX will be no different.

So I'm definitely curious about the NX because who knows it could impress me. But it would take a lot of effort on their part. With the clear fact that Nintendo has given up on Wii U (and 3DS to a lesser extent) it's in their best interest to get the NX out sooner than later. It won't matter to me if NX launches this year or next year because I already feel burned by their lack of support for the Wii U.

Re: Reaction: The Nintendo 'NX', and Why We Think a Unified Platform is the Future

ErrantEmbers

Nintendo has been working towards making a unified system since the SNES, if you think about it. SNES has Super GameBoy which allowed you to play GameBoy games on your TV. N64 didn't have any of that, but GameCube had the GameBoy Player which allowed you to play GBA games on your TV. Not to mention you could hook your GBA up to the GCN as a controller which was required for a few multiplayer games. And now with Wii U the gamepad is an even bigger step in that direction, being able to play the game on the gamepad screen or on TV. I really think it will be a unified platform, and really that's the absolute best thing they could do for themselves and for the fans. I'm tired of buying both a console and a handheld every generation. Sure I don't have to buy both but then I fear I'm missing out on great games if I don't. I really think a console that has a portable component is the best scenario. One system that can be played anywhere - on the go or on TV.

Re: NX Won't Be The Next Version Of Wii Or Wii U, Says Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima

ErrantEmbers

@BinaryFragger Sadly I'm on the same train of thought. I want to believe NX will be awesome and I want Nintendo to succeed but it's hard to believe in them when they keep making the same mistakes over and over. I am not at all convinced the Wii U has not been abandoned. I find it very hard to believe they have yet to announce any titles for Wii U from now until its demise. I truly believe what we know about - Pokken, Star Fox, Twilight Princess HD, Zelda Wii U - is it. At best we will get another HD port.

Re: NX Won't Be The Next Version Of Wii Or Wii U, Says Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima

ErrantEmbers

If Nintendo really isn't abandoning the Wii U, prove it! Give us names of games that are coming in 2016! Not just Pokken Tournament, Star Fox and Zelda. Tell us what you're working on then if more is coming! I don't believe for a second that they will continue supporting the Wii U past 2016 or even much in 2016.

On the topic of the NX I'm glad they're finally moving away from the Wii and Wii U structures. This leads me to believe the Wii name will not be used (thankfully!). But if the NX is something so completely different I can't wait to see what it is. Seems like they're going for another "third pillar" thing like they did (very unsuccessfully) with the Virtual Boy + GameBoy + SNES and (very successfully) with the DS + GBA + GCN. They claim that the NX won't replace the 3DS or Wii U but I'm still leaning towards it replacing both of them. In any event I'm looking forward to hearing more!

Re: Rumour: NX Set for 2016 Release With Nintendo Targeting 20 Million Shipped Units

ErrantEmbers

I definitely think NX will release Nov 2016. It's very clear to me that they're done with the Wii U and are basically just trying to give Wii U owners two more hit games - Star Fox and Zelda. Star Fox comes out in April and Zelda will likely come out in Nov. NX will probably get a Zelda Wii U port for its launch in Nov as well. I know the Wii U will only be 4 years old at the time NX will (likely) release but let's face it - the Wii U was a failure and it's actually in Nintendo's best interest to get the NX out sooner than later.

Re: Feature: Reflecting On Three Years With The Wii U - Part One

ErrantEmbers

@gatorboi352 Same here. I basically have to stay plugged in to the wall to use the gamepad since the battery is dead in 3 or 4 hours. It's really a shame because I feel the gamepad is exactly what held the Wii U back. It could've been a cool feature and some games did use it well - ZombiU for instance - But overall the Wii U honestly would've been much better off with just the Pro controller.

Re: Timing Of NX Launch Could Help Nintendo Grab Some Of Sony And Microsoft's Market Share, Says Analyst

ErrantEmbers

Nintendo really needs to make the console more appealing to third party developers. Sure their first party games are always top notch, but had I put off buying a Wii U and didn't just blindly buy one at launch like I always do, I would've never bought a Wii U at this point. Nintendo has really dropped the ball in terms of quantity and variety. People can complain about the N64's small library and lack of variety all they want but the truth is Wii U's is far, far worse. Wii U has literally no third party support. Without third party games we would have never gotten the wonderful Castlevania games on NES, SNES, N64, GBA, and DS. Or the masterpieces Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 4, or Resident Evil Zero on GCN. Or Final Fantasy IV and VI on SNES. Or CHRONO TRIGGER. People foten discount the importance of third party developers on Nintendo consoles but the truth is they need them. If anyone ever wondered what a console only supported by Nintendo, Wii U is a pretty close example. Again, yes the games that Nintendo put out are good, but there's not nearly enough of them. I mean they put out, what, 4 or 5 games a year? That's the system total. And this year in particular has been brutal up until Yoshi's Woolly World came out. Prior to Yoshi, we had Splatoon (which I did not like) and the so-so Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. That's literally it. Nintendo can do whatever they want and it would be a real shame if they ignore third parties and make a Wii U part 2, but I won't support the console.

Re: Feature: What We Expect from Nintendo Direct - 12th November

ErrantEmbers

In regard to Twilight Princess HD possibly being "budget", if by $50 as opposed to $60 yes I can see it being "budget" priced. That's what Wind Waker HD cost when it came out. If we do get TP HD I really don't see it as an apology from Nintendo, but rather a release to fill a gaping hole that Star Fox and Zelda Wii U left behind when they were pushed to 2016. I'm tired of hearing about Splatoon but I'm sure we'll get some of that in the Direct. Pokemon Go info is likely, but I'm not sure we'll hear about anything we don't already know. I'll tune in to the Direct as I always do but I see no reason to get so worked up over it.

Re: Review: Yo-Kai Watch (3DS)

ErrantEmbers

I wasn't going to get this game but the demo charmed me and I got the game over the weekend and now I'm hooked. It feels like I'm playing a Saturday morning cartoon and I love it. Not crazy about the battle system but I think I have it down and so far it's been a lot of fun.

Re: Final Fantasy Explorers Will Have a Collector's Edition

ErrantEmbers

I usually don't go for Collector's Editions unless I am super hyped about the game and the CE includes a lot of cool stuff. Final Fantasy XII was my first CE and though it didn't include anything outside of a steelbook case, I absolutely love the game and am glad I got the CE. FF Explorers I don't feel that way about so I'll probably skip the CE but I do want the game.

Re: Preview: Hitting the Courts in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash

ErrantEmbers

Thank you for this preview. Now I know for sure I will not be getting this so I was saved $50. I just can't justify spending the price of a full game on something that will likely last me a solid weekend of fun, but nothing more. Especially when we already have a superior Mario Tennis game in Power Tennis.

Re: Video: Nintendo Goes for the Zany Approach in North American Yo-Kai Watch Marketing

ErrantEmbers

I really wanted to like it but the demo kinda put me off. I liked the production value of it and the music was good, but I don't know...something about the game just feels...off to me. The battles are my least favorite part of the demo. I want to like it because it seems like fun and I think given enough time I will like it, but I can't blindly buy a game I'm not sure about.

Re: Poll: The Tricky Issue of Retail Games as Download-Only Releases

ErrantEmbers

@bluedogrulez Totally agree. I'd be more surprised if NX did have physical media actually. I'm 90% sure it will be digital only. I too miss the instruction books and boxes. It was fun to read through the manual before playing a new game I just got. But we can thank the younger generations for being too lazy to go to the store or read instruction books or too irresponsible to keep their discs in nice shape. That and companies' need for maximize their profits aka greed.

Re: Poll: The Tricky Issue of Retail Games as Download-Only Releases

ErrantEmbers

@earthboundlink Just to give you a perspective on why I personally, prefer physical copies... I've never lost or damaged a physical disc or cartridge. I take very good care of my stuff and there's no reason that any disc or cartridge can't last a lifetime if you take care of it. Hard drives fail, way quicker than any cartridge or disc. Switching discs/carts in and out to play different games might seem like a pain but to me the bigger pain is having to go through my files and delete some games and wait for a new one to download. I'm probably in the minority but my internet is very slow to download games, it could take a few hours, if not a day or two, to download a full retail game. It would be WAY quicker for me to run to the store and buy it. Plus I enjoy going out. I hate shopping online, though I do it out of convenience sometimes, but I actually enjoy going to a store and browsing and picking up my game there. I don't mind it in the least. Not to mention if I'm out, like at work and on lunch or between jobs, I have my 3DS with me often...but if a new game came out that day I can't just download it with no wi-fi or 3G available. I'd have to wait to get home to play it. But I can spend 15 min to run to the store and pick it up and play it right then and there. One more thing I prefer about physical media is the fact that in 10 or 20 years from now I know I will be able to play the games I own because I have them. When you buy a digital game now, how do you know you can play them in 10 or 20 years? Will the games still be available for download? Will you have to rebuy them? If people don't care about owning the physical media and sees games as clutter, and also if they don't care about playing games for many years down the line, then that's fine, they see games as a disposable hobby. But when I get a new game, and I play it, I don't plan on getting rid of it after I'm done. I want to play it for many years to come.

But this is just me. Not saying you or anyone else who prefers digital games are wrong. I just thought I'd elaborate my mentality on why I prefer physical media. I believe that both forms of media can co-exist. But I know gaming is headed towards a digital-only future.

Re: Video: This is How Single Player Works in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

ErrantEmbers

@Nintendian Yeah I kind of agree. This does not look like fun to me. The strange thing is, Four Swords Adventures on GCN was also meant to be a multiplayer game but I've played it entirely single player too and it was just as fantastic alone as it was with 3 other friends. This...not so much. It's really a shame with Nintendo games from E3 this year. Happy Home Designer lasted me about 2 days before I grew bored of it, then Chibi-Robo delivered an underwhelming and forgettable experience, and now this looks almost painful playing alone. Not to mention Star Fox Zero was delayed. 2015 might be the worst year for Nintendo games yet. Well, at least we get Mario Maker and Yoshi's Woolly World.
