Re: Rumour: Latest Switch 2 Theory Suggests Release Date Might Be Right Around The Corner

Dm9982

I’m still leaning toward June. A handful of Nintendo consoles have released in and around June, so it’s the most likely month, logically and historically speaking.

That’s if they decide to launch this summer. With Nintendo you honestly never know, and it’s possible that April direct will announce a fall release, though I hope not! I’m personally hoping for June or earlier.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (8th March)

Dm9982

I’ve been playing MH Wilds (Xbox) this week, slowly working my way through, only HR4 so far, but hopefully I’ll break into high rank this weekend.

It’s making me want to go back to Rise and finally start Sunbreak, so I cleared some room on the 1TB and started downloading RiseBreak and GenU (both on Switch ) for good measure.

Also cycling through some D2 on Switch, and Diablo 4, Tokyo Xtreme Racer and Ghost Trick on the Steam Deck.

Re: 20 Years After Its Demise, Publisher 'Acclaim' Is Being Resurrected

Dm9982

@KingMike that’s right! It’s been awhile since I’ve played it and got the two mixed up. It was a Hudson soft developed game released through Jaleco in the west. I played the hell out of it as a kid with my mom. Eventually when SNES and Bomberman came out we started playing that together, although today is the first time I’ve learned that RW was a part of the Bomberman series (RW was titled Bomber King in Japan).

Thank you for connecting those dots for me! Awesome stuff!

Re: 20 Years After Its Demise, Publisher 'Acclaim' Is Being Resurrected

Dm9982

If you were a kid in the 80s and 90s and went to the arcades a lot, then you know a lot of the arcade ports to NES/SNES were developed/published by Acclaim. Acclaim Etertainment was an absolutely HUGE supporter of Nintendo back then giving us access some amazing games for the time like NBA Jam, Mortal Kombat, Narc, Simpsons, WWF titles, and more or less every movie tie in like Aliens and Terminator titles….

For anyone needing a refresher of just how prolific Acclaim was back then….

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Acclaim_Entertainment_games

Was one of the few games companies I felt their loss when they went defunct. Another being Data East….. Robowarrior will be forever locked on NES I think

Edit - Change Data East to Jaleco. Thank you @Kingmike for the correction!

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Doesn't Need To Worry About Steam Deck Sales

Dm9982

@-wc- np! Feel free to message me if you have any questions. There’s a really good website called ProtonDB that has info on most games, if they run, how they run, and what the best settings typically are for performance and/or battery life.

I will warn, don’t be fooled by the “Steam Deck Verified” on the Steam store. There’s a bunch of games, mainly new releases, that get that branding but don’t work well or need tweaks. Yet there’s ones listed as Unsupported that work perfectly fine outta the box, like Resident Evil 5 Gold.

Avowed is listed as Playable, and it is, but it’s def not as stable or pretty as its Xbox version. Still needs some SD specific tweaks to be verified, but I know Obsidian is working on it.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Doesn't Need To Worry About Steam Deck Sales

Dm9982

@-wc- main reason I grabbed an SD was because I was debating between it and a Ps5. Everything that’s on PS4/5 that I wanted to play like GoW/GoWR work on SD nicely and I’ve even managed to toss Baldurs 3 at it - granted this one takes specific setting adjustments, and disabling HDR to get a stable 30fps. But it and RDR2 can look nearly as nicely as they do on my Series X, just not as many fps.

Hair effects/looks is a big one that without the proper setting dialed in for SD, they’ll look noticably ugly compared to modern console counterparts.

Not sure how your laptop stacks up, but it may be worth it to grab an SD OLED at some point.

I got it mainly because I knew I’d never get God of War on Switch or Xbox, and I wanted something that was capable of portable gaming, especially for mature games, as I’ve got kiddos. SD made more sense than Ps5 and a Portal combo.

Also loving pc exclusive titles like Sims 1&2 Legacy Collection, soooo nice being able to play those again!

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Doesn't Need To Worry About Steam Deck Sales

Dm9982

@-wc- It’s def a wild statement as anyone owning a switch for the first time would have to buy games for it. With Ps5 you either have to buy ps5 games or own ps4 games previously. Only Xbox has maintained BC all the way through the original Xbox, and that was a prime selling factor for me with Series X - instant access to OG Xbox, 360, and XB1 games I’ve purchased over the years.

Steam Deck was a harder choice for me, however, grabbing a few bundles like the Bethesda Collection for $30, the Borderlands Pandora’s collection for $15, and the XbPlay app for $6 (works sooooo much better than the official Xbox app for streaming/remote, and actually allows you to remote 360 titles - official does not for some weird reason.) made it an easier pill to swallow. Ended up getting the SD last Sept, and aside from spending $50 so I could place an order for the SD without getting my order auto kicked back with their anti scalper system…. I didn’t own any pc games at the time. Now I have over 100…. Lordy…

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Doesn't Need To Worry About Steam Deck Sales

Dm9982

@-wc- You’d be correct, a Steam Deck is also a full fledged Linux PC. The beauty of it is it can be as simple as a console to operate, or you can get into the nitty gritty of it and modify files to your liking.

If you purchase a game from the Steam store, it’s no different than eShop or other consoles - buy, download and play.

But for advanced stuff, like in the case of the recent Early Access release of Tokyo Xtreme Racer, you can edit ini files to better suit the system. At Early launch the game was defaulting to a 1920x1080 res that was bogging down the game on SD, and wouldn’t properly stay there (even if you set the game to force boot into 1280x800, the SDs resolution) . A simple tweak of the config.ini file adjusted that.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 Doesn't Need To Worry About Steam Deck Sales

Dm9982

I own a Deck and love it, I also still own and love my Switch. Much like generations of the past with Xbox and Ps, my Deck has become my second console and my first time back into PC gaming in about 15 years. If it weren’t for how easy it is to use and operate - plus the track pads - I would have never gotten back into the pc space.

I’ll still get a Switch 2 at launch, the only deciding factor there was if it was going to be BC with Switch 1 because my library is just too massive to drop Switch 1.

Nintendo needs not worry at all, there’s plenty of room in the gaming space for these systems.

Re: Bonkers Metroidvania 'Rusty Rabbit' Now Has A Switch eShop Demo

Dm9982

@Dazman Couldn’t find anything definitive on the Steam page, however, the screen shots show getting xp for certain actions like destroying a bunch of blocks. So I’d hazard a guess there’s some sort of leveling / skill tree type thing. Just unsure if it’ll be an actual rpg with leveling and gear, or if it’s just skills/abilities in a tree. Since it’s mainly listed as action platformer, it could be that it’s a “go anywhere” type of MV with ability gates locked in a skill tree and you effectively can choose which path to take based on your skill selection. I’ve seen those pop up a bunch in the MV Reddit the last couple years….

Re: Video: We've Played Civilization VII On Nintendo Switch - Here's 15 Minutes Of Gameplay

Dm9982

@Late Yeah, I honestly think it was just an early access glitch or something. Was so weird. I was either wanting to dive in head first at Antiquity, or play a tutorial scenario like they had for Civ 6.

It only allowed me to pick Explore or Modern, went with Explore then was giving me the standard tooltip hints along the way, with out explaining much. Like it told me I had a General that needed a promotion, but didn’t tell me how to access them. Lmao. I was very confused.

Re: Video: We've Played Civilization VII On Nintendo Switch - Here's 15 Minutes Of Gameplay

Dm9982

@Late hmmm ok I’ll have to check the Civ I picked. I knew of the decoupling - which is odd, but honestly I’m fine with. I know I chose the earliest age, which I guess is Antiquity (sorry my 42 yr old brain doesn’t work like it use to, and I confused it for ancient. Lol). And I know I chose Ben Franklin. But I can’t remember which Civ, haven’t picked it back up since launch day (early access launch day). I wanna say I chose Greece, but not positive.

I may have chosen Exploration age…. I know I was offered only two ages at the start…. Modern and another. I’ll check in an hour or so when I get back to my Switch.

Edit - Ben, Norman, and indeed chose Exploration Age. Need to restart this game lol

Re: Video: We've Played Civilization VII On Nintendo Switch - Here's 15 Minutes Of Gameplay

Dm9982

Game / engine is running smoother than Civ 6, that’s for sure.

But the start and lack of an opening tutorial (it’s a tutorial as you go instead so far) has me a bit thrown off….

I’m use to starting Civ as a settler and picking my starting location. This one just gave me 2 cities right off the bat…. Meanwhile Napoleon, and 2 other civs have 4 cities starting out….

Also started with a lot of units….

It’s almost like I’m playing a scenario, but all I did was hit new game. I truly hope this isn’t the “streamlined” process I’d heard about…. Was trying to keep Civ 7 news and such away and give myself a spoiler free experience….

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th February (North America)

Dm9982

@Soroush I hope Nintendo takes the approach that Microsoft did where standard graphical enhancements via patch should be provided free of charge for current owners of a game - FO4/Witcher 3/Cyberpunk are just some of the few I know received free patches to enhance games frame rate, resolution, and next gen abilities. All free of charge.

Meanwhile on the Ps side, originally those same enhancement types were be charged an upgrade fee originally. I remember my friend in the Netherlands complaining about it on God of War and Final Fantasy 7R. Thankfully that is no longer the case, but at the time it is what made me decide to go Xbox over Ps this Gen.

As you said, typically Nintendo has done a “Deluxe” route with stuff like MK8, New Mario U, etc. But at least with those it wasn’t just a straight up graphical upgrade, and included more stuff. Their deluxe editions are like a “Remaster 1.5”. Not a full Remake for sure; but a def a cut above graphic update and Remaster. Typically including extras and cut content.

I truly doubt we’ll see any up charging even from third parties for just flat graphical updates, as that type of patch doesn’t require that much man power and time to achieve. But we may (likely) see Deluxe, Director Cut, or Special/Anniversary editions from all parties, including Nintendo, which is fine as long as it provides extras or at the very least packages in any dlc for free. Skyrim anniversary was like playing an entirely different game. So many new items and quests from the start!

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th February (North America)

Dm9982

@Soroush I doubt Nintendo would be the type to charge for upgraded versions, most of the industry has gotten away from that.

As far as difference between scaling and bespoke patch, see the difference of something like Witcher 3 or FO4. Both had simple FPS boosts on Series X, but then got 4k next gen patches with ray tracing and such. So likely Switch 2 would just provide a stable frame rate / stable res (for dynamic res games) out of the box, but Switch 2 specific updates would allow the game to take full advantage of the hardware likely being able to increase capped resolutions / capped fps.

Only Nintendo and dedicated third party companies like CDPR would likely issue bespoke updates like that however. And some of the better indies as well. The rest would be up in the air on whether or not it’s worth it to revisit the game and update it for the folks that already own the standard Switch version.

Make no mistake though it def isn’t outside the realm of possibility for certain (third party) companies to purposely sell two skus of the same game, like EA might do with FIFA title or something. The standard Switch version costing say $50 and the S2 version $60. But it’s unlikely we’ll see upcharges for patches which do the same thing. Gamers rebelled on that with PS4->Ps5 patches and industry bent the knee….

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th February (North America)

Dm9982

@Soroush There’s a fairly decent chance that MOST games released in the last couple years have coding built in to take advantage of better hardware day one. Much like Series X and FPS boost/upscaling for 360/XB1 titles.

I think a few games have actually proved it (like Scarlet/Violet) via data mining. A lot of devs were expecting a mid gen refresh around 2021, but we got the OLED instead. Before that even there was an article on here where Nintendo had been telling its partners to make their games with upscaling in mind.

So I think it’s a really safe bet that a majority of retail titles you purchase on Switch now will benefit from Switch 2 even without proper patches.

Re: Zelda Dev "Wasn't Too Pleased" About Working On 'A Link To The Past'

Dm9982

I understand this completely. Originally I was studying to become a game dev, grew with computers and games so it came naturally to me.

Then in my twenties I took a job at GameStop.
After working there a year I quickly figured out that I enjoy games as a fun past time, to escape reality and have fun in a virtual playground. I worked with games all day, and wanted to play them all day long, but by the time I got home and was able to, the last thing I wanted to do was play games.

So yeah, I get the thought completely. If id have developed Witcher 3 or BotW the magic behind those would have been ruined completely for me.

Re: Nintendo Taking "All Possible Measures" To Combat Switch 2 Scalpers

Dm9982

I’ve said it before, easiest way to combat it is direct guaranteed sales to subscribers exactly like Sony and Valve have done.

Valve took it a few steps further and made it so you had to be a member of Steam for at least a year and over $50 spent on the account (this was for pre-orders and first year sales) in order to be able to place the order. If those two criteria were not met it would auto cancel your order.

Just need to make enough for retail/retail pre-order and also allow NSO subscribers a guaranteed order. Doesn’t matter if it’s first, second, or third wave…. Just a guaranteed order and MSRP price. Doing this would allow many fans to just place the order and wait for the arrival instead of having to try to fight for pre-orders online or at stores, nor result to having to buy from scalpers should they fail to snag a retail pre-order.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not saying NSO subs should get the first wave of orders. No. Just a guaranteed order at normal price. Exactly how Sony did after 6 months of insane scalping for ps5. Psn members got an email saying they could place an order directly so they didn’t have to battle for retail units or pay 3-5x on scalped prices.

Nintendo should do that from the get go though, not wait 6 months to see how things pan out….

Re: Rumour: Diablo 4 Is Claimed To Be In Development For Switch 2

Dm9982

Honestly wouldn’t suprise me at all, D4 is on every platform but Switch atm basically. I love D2 and D3 was fun as well. Played D4 for the first few season then lost interest. It felt like D3, in a darker package, with a skill tree that didn’t really matter, and sole focus was on the Paragon/Glyph board. Not to mention resistances and stuff were still completely broken at the time, smh.

It’s probably (I honestly don’t know) in a better spot by now, at least one could hope. And I might pick it up again on Switch 2, but it would be a difficult choice, spent $100 on the Ultimate edition already and was burnt for 3-5 months there at launch….

Re: Talking Point: Did All The Switch 2 Leaks 'Damage' Nintendo Or The Console's Reveal?

Dm9982

As a long time Nintendo fan, and electronics enthusiast, I wasn’t bothered by the leaks. As the last few weeks went on I believed a lot of them to be legit and was just more hyped for it.

Honestly speaking, once Nintendo said it was BC last year I knew I was getting it on launch for sure, so leaks and specs didn’t matter much. I’d be willing to bet this was the thought of many.

Now the official reveal itself I’d argue did more “damage” in the fact that most of us have been (impatiently) waiting for it, and expected a very likely March/May launch. Now it’s probably June at best; but possibly July. I did some research and found historically Nintendo has released a majority of their systems (console and handheld) around the March-July window. I had honestly believe it to be the fall window, but my 42 year old brain obviously needs a tune up!

I use “damage” there loosely, as it’s truly not damaging, just disappointing. Was really hoping to get one in March dang it!

Edit - Still praying they let NSO subscribers pre-order directly so we don’t have to fight scalpers at retail….. Come on Nintendo! Steam and Sony did it! You can too!

@MegaMari0 Bahahahah! I feel ya there! Just wait till you’re remote playing RE7 on Madhouse in bed with your headphones on at 2am and while Jack is chasing you, your 5 year old suddenly appears above your device saying “What ya doin daddy?”

Someone pooped my pants at that exact moment, I still haven’t figured out who….

And for a short time my daughter thought I called her “Oh f*** god****”

Re: Anniversary: Resident Evil 4, One Of The Greatest Games Ever Made, Turns 20

Dm9982

@DripDropCop146 I can see that. Have a friend who preferred the original 1-3, as they were more horror focused. Another friend prefers 5&6 because he’s an action fan and those were action games with a side of horror. Then there’s the 7&8 crowd because those were almost like playing a horror movie. 7 on Madhouse is probably the most intense game I’ve ever played to this day….

Re: Anniversary: Resident Evil 4, One Of The Greatest Games Ever Made, Turns 20

Dm9982

This was the first game through the NES-GC eras that I thought had received the amount of attention and detail that a Zelda title would receive during development. And the first time I had ranked something outside of Nintendo truly in the same league as Nintendo.

Back in NES and SNES days I always thought Capcom was the next best in line to Nintendo when it came to development, Mega Man X truly steeled that for me.

During the N64/Ps1 era I didn’t have access to a Ps1, so I missed out a bunch until the end of that cycle. Didn’t play RE1-3 or Metal Gear Solid till almost when Ps2 released. Still though, that era was a bit rough, especially for 3D games and their wonky cameras. Ocarina of Time and Majora’s mask were 2 major stand outs during that time frame however.

By Ps2 and GC we’d had a bit more grips with 3D work and much better cameras. As far as GC titles go, RE4 was easily a top 3 title with it’s only 2 competitors both Zelda titles. If you expand things out across all platforms at the time but narrow the genre to just action/adventure it still stands in a top 3 or at least top 5 ranking.

I don’t mind double dipping on games to have them on multiple platforms just in case I don’t have access to one of them. RE4 is one of the few titles I’ve rebought on every platform however. It’s just that good, and stands up even to this day. Not many games can truly say they’re still really good 20+ years later.

Re: GameStop's Internal Database Lists Multiple 'Switch 2' Accessory SKUs

Dm9982

@Jeronan Another thing everyone should consider Ally, Legion, and Steam Deck all DO NOT support the Express speed as their readers were not designed with Express in mind. The Deck and Go cap out at about 100mb/s or UHS 1 class.

The Ally can go a little faster, with reports topping out around 150mb/s….

So while it’s entirely possible that Switch 2 has Express compatibility, and possible that Nintendo planned for it, it’s also entirely possible that accessory makers are just trying to cash in on the Switch 2 hype and peddle their wares even though there’s no evidence that Switch 2 100% supports it.

It would be a nice thing if it does, and would also possibly allow instant loading like Ps5 achieves. But we won’t know for sure until we know exactly what type of SSD is under the hood of the Switch 2.

If the SSD doesn’t support NVMe or any of the super fast loading like Ps5, then the sd card slot won’t either, and thus won’t support Express speeds.

Edit - The reason why there’s no difference between a “grey” and “gold” Sandisk micro SD on Switch is because the bus speed won’t allow for the faster transfer capability of the gold version. The transfer speed is unified for HD, Carts, and Micro Sd cards. So if any of those are capped at say 150mb/s, then all will be. For reference I believe the max transfer (in practice) of Switch 1 HD/Carts/Micro is around 70-80mb/s

Re: GameStop's Internal Database Lists Multiple 'Switch 2' Accessory SKUs

Dm9982

@Jeronan they’re most definitely confused, as according to Sdcard.org the standards for SD Express and Micro SD Express weren’t even introduced until late 2023, and Samsung and Sandisk didn’t start sampling the express cards until last year.

Like you, I too just went on a hunt to try to find Express cards, and I can’t find one anywhere above 256gb that I believe to be legit. According to Sandisk and Samsung they only make up to 256gb currently (as that’s the max available on their direct shops). I would not trust another manufacturer or site currently offering Express in any other size than 128 or 256, nor from any maker besides Sam or San.

I’ve read too many horror stories from people getting scammed and ripped off buying micro sd cards from Amazon. So everyone out there potentially eyeing up storage for Switch 2, take heed and be safe. If it seems too good to be true it likely is. Shop direct, not third party wholesaler.

And lastly, wait for official confirmation from Nintendo on supported speeds. You don’t want to early adopt a 256 express only for it to not be officially supported; or worse you get a dud you don’t know about until you get your Switch 2 and it’s far past a refund/exchange date.

Re: PS5 Will Sell More Than 'Switch 2' In The US This Year, Says Analyst

Dm9982

On one hand, likely considering Ps5 has had a longer run than Switch 2 will have plus a larger selection of games (not counting backwards compatibility of either system)….

On the other hand, “hot fresh newness” which typically causes a consumer frenzy…. This will wear off unless Nintendo keeps a hot streak going of major driving releases…. Something like a Mario, a Zelda, a Pokémon, an animal crossing, a Metroid, a Xenoblade, a Bayonetta….. all spaced about 2 months apart. If they can maintain say 1-2 major franchise releases every 3 months it should drive the sales into a constant momentum…..

Also, they’ll need to market and hard, the fact that your current library of Switch games will carry over, this will also be a huge driving factor to get people to “switch” over, pardon the pun.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Dm9982

@liveswired The power of the system is nearly irrelevant at this point. Sure it won’t be running games natively at 4k/60fps - something that even Series X and Ps5 can struggle with to be honest.

But that ultimately does not matter. Certain techs have come an extremely long way since Ps4 and Ps4 Pro days. Stuff like DLSS and FSR2.2 &3.1.

I bought a Steam Deck for my bday last year, and I’m quite amazed at how gorgeous games look on that considering I force them to run natively at 720p and upscale them. RDR2 looks NEARLY as good as it does running on my Series X on my 4k tv. Even Baldurs Gate 3 looks nearly as good (granted that one took a lot of adjusting to get there, originally the Hair looked horrid Ps2 quality)…. RDR2 runs at a steady 40, or 45 if I drop some reflections. Baldurs is a steady 30, though I haven’t made it to act 3 yet… I assume it’ll hit the 22-28 range around there…:

My point is that’s all running on a very optimized yet still full pc set up…. Switch 2 will have a MUCH more optimized OS trimmed of the pc fat; and furthermore the games will be hardcoded for a standardized platform with a standardized OS. Not brute forcing a pc game into steamOS or running proton shells for compatibility.

I truly believe anyone in doubt is going to be simply amazed at what the Switch 2 will pull off.

Just look back at Nintendos history of efficiency and optimization in gaming. They may not have the beefiest of specs but they can pull off some insanity with what they have.

Witcher 3 was a heck of a nice example of that.:.. something not even the gear heads at Digital Foundry could pull off.

If I was a betting man, and Larian announced Baldurs 3 for Switch 2, I would be willing to bet money that it would run smoother and look nicer than the Steam Deck version. Closer to what Ally X or Legion is able to pull off.

It should also be noted that Cyberpunk runs very nicely on Deck, and that game was notoriously rough on past gen. Another game that if CDRP brought over would likely shine on Switch 2.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Dm9982

@huupawel Not quite…. The steam deck doesn’t use Vram in the traditional sense. It has a shared 16gb of memory, which can be allocated to cpu or gpu usage, much like traditional consoles like 360 and PS3 have in the past. By default it was set to 1GB of Vram, but that is no longer being used as it was previously. Page files are no longer a thing either.

This is why when a memory leak occurred you could actively watch your 16gb of memory getting eaten up via performance overlay. And you can still watch it grow under the new ZRAM file overlay. It just won’t cause the deck to lock up anymore. Once it would hit about 13.5gb your deck would start to crawl, 14+ and it would lock up / hard reboot.

Boot up a deck using 3.6+ and run GoW, you’ll see the new overlay and can watch your settings change the allocated memory size.

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Dm9982

@mariomaster96 Depends on the deck. I’m getting 3.5 hours of battery on Baldurs 3, I’ve got the SD OLED 1TB model.

This is respectable considering the game. I do wish it was 5 hours instead, but still not horrible.

Now the original Deck can only manage about. 1.5 hours on Baldurs 3 from what I understand….that would be much worse!

On the flip, I can get like 10 hours on Vampire Survivors or remoting my Series X

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Dm9982

@Owozifa Not sure if Switch 2 will utilize ZRAM to offset things. Possibly and hopefully so. Steam Deck has 16gb of ram, 13.5-14 of which is accessible to games. Some games, like God of War 2016 have memory leak issues that could bottom out the Deck. Prior to SteamOS 3.6, games like such would require running CryoUtilities to manage your page file size and allow the game to operate without issue.

Valve introduced the ability for SteamOS to utilize ZRAM instead of swap in 3.6 and it solved a LOT of issues regarding ram limits/memory leaks.

Again tho, SD is a full fledged Linux pc, whereas Switch 2 OS will be highly trimmed versus even SteamOS branch of Linux. Curious if Nintendo will use Linux (Android) again with Switch 2….. I’d guess pretty likely considering the backwards compatibility.

12gb shouldn’t be much of an issue however as long as games are native rendered at 540-720p and upscaled.

And to anyone that thinks 540-720 native and upscaled is gonna look trash, you should go check out a Steam Deck then come back…. I’ve got Baldurs, Wonderlands, GoW, Spider-Man and such all running around 720p native and using AMD FSR 2.2-3.1 and the results are amazing. You can get games like Spider Man Remastered running at 60fps, or games like Baldurs running at 30fps all while not looking far off of the Series X or Ps5 versions….

Re: Digital Foundry Weighs In On 'Switch 2' Motherboard - Just How Powerful Is It?

Dm9982

So one thing that DF should point out, if they didn’t, is this set up has a lot more capability than the PS4 chipset did. A lot more modern advancements. Just because it’s got “ps4 level of power” doesn’t mean it’s just a portable ps4.

It will be a LOT more than that. It’ll run Elden and RDR2 easily and even Cyberpunk and Baldurs Gate 3.

Considering the Steam Deck can run all of those, and it’s still a full fledged pc, Switch 2 will very likely be able to run those as Nintendo will be trimming the fat of the OS to make it the most efficient for running games. Steam Deck does its job well, very much so, I have one and can attest…. but it still has all the pc operations, drivers to manage, shaders, etc…. And it does a lot of this through proton shells (which is similar to emulation).

Switch 2 OS will be bespoke, and games will have to be coded and developed for it, where the Steam Deck is just running a pc version at compatible settings.

I’d be willing to bet that if Larian tossed Baldurs 3 on Switch 2 it would run smoother and better than Steam Deck. Same goes for CDPR and Cyberpunk 2077, which runs very well on Steam Deck truth be told.

Ultimately it’ll depend on developers and how much effort they’ll be willing to expend on Switch 2 versions of games, but in all reality, the Switch 2 should run games on par if not better than SD.

Re: Review: Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP (Switch) - This Choppy Remaster Of A Cult Gem Doesn't Bring Any Cheer

Dm9982

I still picked this up as I’d never played it on 360, and it came during a generation where I missed out a lot - never played Madworld, Lollipop, No More Heroes, or Xenoblade back then. It is a shame it’s missing its licensed music, which is likely a major contribution to why it was a cult classic.

@whitespy12 I’m right there with ya. I own Witcher and Doom 2016 on all platforms, but the Switch versions are the only ones I’ve completed and 100%. A lot of the time I prefer 30fps to 60 as “smooth motion” tends to trigger my motion sickness - though not as bad as choppy frames. All of it is also more tolerable on a handheld screen than a big tv 12 ft away from me. I missed out on God of War on PS4 because its performance was up and down on the Pro. On quality it was stuttery and on performance there was a pacing issue. Both triggered my motion sickness horribly. But I can play it just fine on Steam Deck now. Go figure.
When I get around to it Hogwarts will likely be another title I only complete 100% on Switch, even though I have it on Xbox and Steam. Comfort and play anywhere are FAR more important to me than highest rez and frame rate.

@RiasGremory I truly hope it’s in a better state by now, but I had to stop playing mid third season. was extremely miffed I grinded big seasonal tower only to find out we were still stuck on season 1 tower which basically didn’t allow Switch users an easier way to grind out characters and cameos. All other versions had that ability to level up the one tower in particular, not us.

@JohnnyMind That’s one thing I really wish Nintendo would incorporate fully going forward, retaining the ability to buy previous generations games on the shop. When I got my Series X I was astonished to see I could still purchase some OG Xbox and 360 games still, even more impressive it’s retained all my digital purchases over the years and I can still play them.

It’s the reason I bought into the Steam Deck this year. It’s insane being able to play something like Simcity 2000-3000 and Elden Ring on the same system. I haven’t been a PC gamer for about 15 years, and back then I was Windows only. I’d played the original Simcity on dos, as well as Leisure Suit Larry, but a lot of those games lost compatibility moving forward through the Windows iterations, particularly around the time of Windows ME. So yeah it’s absolutely bonkers that I’ve got LSL1-7 on Steam Deck, able to play them without issue, as well as Baldurs Gate 3, all on a handheld device to boot! Blows my mind where we’re at in gaming nowdays….

@JohnnyMind I had Ghost Trick on DS, but never fully got into it back then, and then ended up trading it away to help pay for 3DS. Foolish move! I’ve gotten away from trading now and just amassing a backlog.

I was super thankful when it got remastered for Switch, and even more so once I completed it! I’m gonna have to play through again soon, got it on Steam for $5, and really looking forward to another run. It’s funny, I love the ace attorney games, but Ghost Trick just was so much more involving and drawing. Pinnacle of Takumi

@JohnnyMind thanks again for being the hero! You’re in for a wonderful ride between Stardew and Ghost Trick alone! Ghost is on the shorter side (think I completed in 3 days total), but it’s one of the best games I’ve played truthfully, and I’ve been playing since about 1985. Stardew is equally as amazing with super deep stories amongst the townsfolk! Stick with it, even if you hit a wall or feel repetitive sinking in. Trust that the end sights and stories are worth the travel!

Both 10/10 games in my book

Re: Dbrand Seems To Have Shared Images Of Switch 2 Inside Its New Case

The Switch 2 doesn’t really need to diverge from Switch 1 in terms of overall design and economics. It’s a pretty solid design that so many have tried to copy like Steam, Asus, MSI, and Lenovo.

It basically just needs to pack more power and ability than Switch 1.

Also to those thinking this would lead to another Wii U issue, not if they brand and advertise correctly. Wii / Wii U was a marketing disaster even though the systems look different. Whereas IPhone hasn’t changed design much since the initial Iphone. Just bigger, better screens, better cams, better internals, etc. but the look is still mostly the same.

People are use to branding like IPhone 1-16, or PlayStation 1-5. Tossing letters in, or making up new numbers like Xbox to Xbox 360, confuses matters. Doubly so if you fail to advertise and market correctly. Something Nintendo did, where MS managed to communicate the 360 was a beast of an upgrade over original Xbox, causing it to sell like wildfire.
