Re: 'Worldless' Mixes Metroidvania Exploration And Innovative Combat On Switch Next Month

Dm9982

@Antraxx777 @somnambulance That’s my concern. Turn based and Metroidvania CAN work, but I’ve only experienced that twice. Underhero and Monster Sanctuary. MS is a great example of it working and working well, but it’s also part Creature Tamer too. Underhero is more traditional MV but with Turn Based Combat, however, it’s also comical and parody like.

I do believe a serious/dramatic MV could work with TBC, but I don’t know/havent played one yet that does.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Super Mario Bros. Wonder?

Dm9982

I need to play more of it, but I will say this is the first 2D Mario game in a long time that I’ve been excited and curious about within the first couple stages! Elephant Mario and it’s abilities bring back that super fresh feeling that SMW, Mario 64, and Mario Galaxy gave. So far, easily the best 2D Mario since SMW. NSMB on DS with the Golden Flower and Giant Mushroom were the closest power ups in recent memory to tickle that Mario Excitement, but still not as much as the aforementioned games, and Wonder.

Re: Nintendo Accounts To "Help Ease" Next-Gen Transition, According To Doug Bowser

Dm9982

So the second, of 3 reasons we had to rebuy VC titles on Wii U and 3DS was due to the accounts not being connected between systems. The other two being greed and different emulation.

The Nintendo Account system was designed to be similar to the Xbox account system. In theory, everything should be able to transfer over and be accessed with ease. However, this all depends on if Nintendo allows you to access your previous library, AND if they had the fore thought to make the Switch 2 BC. Aka using a Tegra X2 in the new system would automatically make it BC without hardly any adjustment. Now we’re a long shot off from Tegra X2 being an upgrade, as tech has moved a lot since the X1 and X2 days. That doesn’t mean Nvidia or another company couldn’t design a chipset that works with X1 tech.

BC will largely be dependent on the new chipset being the same architecture as Switch, as due to the portable nature, I highly doubt we’ll get a chipset so much more powerful as it’s able to emulate the Switch. Possible, but doubtful.
So cross your fingers Nintendo has chosen the same architecture as before, much like they did with GB>GBA, DS>3DS, GC>Wii>WiiU.

NSO was also created with this in mind. You should be able to, in the future, pick up any Nintendo system and instantly access your NSO games once logged in. So this should be a given on Switch 2.

A large part of Xbox and Nintendos relationship is due to the fact Nintendo had Xbox assist with the new account system AND network infrastructure. This bodes well for BC, as MS likely told them that doing things with a Unified Account will make BC going forward cheap, easy and effective.

Not to mention, MS probably showed them data on how consumers to this day will buy digital titles that were released 15-20 years ago. I’d think Nintendo would want to continue to sell Mario Wonder 20 years from now easily. But then again, sometimes they have a “Disney Vault” mindset, so I dunno.

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Shares "First Look" At The Kombat Pack DLC Fighter Omni-Man

Dm9982

@DogDetective I was just about to post the same. I had faith in Saber, but I honestly didn’t think they’d be able to bring it up to speed as fast as they did. A month post launch to bringing it above MK11 in terms of visuals and frames. There’s still a few stages that hitch for me - at least in Invasion versions where there’s extra projectiles /portals…. Haven’t tried those same stages regularly yet.

All that said, Saber is going to continue to further improve this over the next year. Company does amazing work with porting. I wouldn’t be surprised if it met and exceeded the Steam Deck version by the time it’s all done.

I wish Nintendo would pick up Saber as their personal handheld port specialists…. The Switch 2 ports could look like high quality 1080 versions of X/Ps5 titles…..

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy A Digital-Only 'Switch 2'?

Dm9982

So this depends on a lot of factors…. I’ll use Xbox as an example and Steam. We know now going forward our digital collections are pretty darn safe, the next systems will be able to access our past titles…. Something Nintendo hasn’t shown a stable concurrency with, every 2 gens we loose a Gen at the very least or in the case of Switch a fresh start completely (this is understandable though, and Nintendo has done very well to port Wii, Wii U, DS, etc forward)….

So that would be number one, assurance our collections wouldn’t just go belly up every Gen or every other Gen. A continuous ecosystem just like Xbox and Steam.

A way to transfer, even with a small cost, our physical titles over to digital would be nice as well - but not a deal breaker.

Storage / Storage Options. Nuff said.

Ability to share my digital titles with my family as I would a physical cart. I think should already be an option for NSO+ Family Subs. Any member under the plan that buys a title, all have access too while the sub is active.

Digital and Physical options, like Ps5 and Xbox.
Not everyone wants a digital only machine, myself included. But I’m not wholly against a digital only console.

If these things were in place, I’d be more tempted to buy a digital only console. Heck, I own probably 4x-5x as many titles digital than I do physical.

Re: Video: Borderlands 3: Ultimate Edition Side-By-Side Comparison (Switch & PS5)

Dm9982

@Fighting_Game_Loser Np! It’s always a blast to play Borderlands in the palm of your hands. Now I can just pray Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands comes to Switch next to complete the collection.

@Warioware As some one else pointed out that 23.5 includes the language packs, but I did not download em. I think my file size is about 18-19gb total without the language packs.

The skills and gameplay on BL3 are def above the quality of BL2, and thank god no more Slag! But compared to BL2 the story is meh, the villains aren’t nearly as funny and bombastic as Handsome Jack. One thing to note, I only played BL3 originally up to the first dlc after it launched. At the time, when BL3 was vanilla, it paled in comparison to BL2 - but this was going to be a given due to just how much content BL2 had amassed by then. Although, Mayhem mode is the best thing the series could introduce, no more multiple slogs through story to max out chars, especially if you want to build more than one char. Never did get around to the dlc on BL3 or the state of the game now, so I’m looking forward to the changes the game has undergone since original launch.

Re: Video: Borderlands 3: Ultimate Edition Side-By-Side Comparison (Switch & PS5)

Dm9982

@Fighting_Game_Loser It doesn’t need an internet connection to play, just update/hotfixes/shift codes.I’m playing offline just fine.

Game runs great! I’ve played this on PS4 Pro, Series X and now Switch. Gotta say I’m impressed and thoroughly happy with my purchase. Did experience a crash after putting it in sleep then trying to pick back up, but that happens with a lot of games on all platforms so not surprising.

The only real issue so far is it takes about 2 mins to load up to get to the main menu. But once there it’s quick and smooth to jumping in game and playing. Solid port! Noticed Saber was credited on boot screen, seriously master craftsmen in their specialty.

Edit - and in case anyone missed it, the total game size including all the dlc is 23.5. You can opt out of installing the dlc if you chose to save space. Nice touch there,

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Dm9982

@Turbo857 I had every Xbox each Gen, amassed some digital purchases through it all. I owned an XB1 for about 4 months, but hated how slow it was compared to my PS4. So I gave it to a friend and his kids. When Series X launched I debated for about 3 months if I wanted a Ps5 or X. Ended up with X when i realized I would instantly get access to my old games again, plus 2 years of GPU. Was a no brainer at that point, as all the ps5 was going to get me over my PS4 Pro was more stable ps4 games and (at the time) promise of new titles in the future (there wasn’t anything at launch I wanted). Still haven’t gotten a ps5 yet, and now I’m debating that or an Ally/Legion Go.

The power of backwards compatibility and easier access to past and future titles is an extremely extremely important aspect of gaming and game platforms now days. With large digital libraries and the guarantee that hardware will eventually fail, I’d argue that it’s actually one of the most important aspects of system design now days.

Games are fun, entertaining, and art, all at once. Backwards compatibility helps to preserve it. I’ve been through the 80s and 90s, seen a lot of games / IPs get lost over the years. (Robowarrior anyone?) And with these massive digital storefronts…. It’s truly a sad thing to see them not only close down like the 3DS recently did, but knowing that if my 3DS goes belly up, I won’t be able to access those titles again unless I get lucky and find a good condition 3DS replacement.

Wii, Wii U, 3DS, Vita, Ps3, 360 etc can all still access their purchases, but only so long as you have the hardware to do so….. Microsoft I feel was the only one of the bunch that had the foresight to realize that might be an issue…. The fact that I can still access my past titles is truly amazing. Something I haven’t seen since I last was a pc gamer - about 17 years ago. There’s just no excuse to not have BC when MS, Steam, IOS, Android, etc have all shown it’s the right choice going forward. Plus as I said, games can be evergreen. I’m positive there are people still purchasing 80s and 90s pc games from GoG, or Fallout NV for $3 on Steam. You’d think developers and publishers would help push all the console companies to adopt the same approach. Though a major store front redesign would be in order for most platforms, lol.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Dm9982

Honestly, BC is going to be the single biggest deciding factor between purchasing a launch Switch 2, or just picking up an Asus Ally / Lenovo Legion Go.

I’ve already decided I’m going to get an Ally/Legion instead of a Ps5 at some point, because being able to play Game Pass, Xbox Anywhere titles like Starfield, old games like Leisure Suit Larry from GoG, and PC versions of Ps4/Ps5 on one device just makes so much more sense than buying a Ps5 strictly for PS4/5 games.

So right now I’m just saving up and waiting for more Switch 2 info. If it indeed is coming next year and has BC, boom I’ll get that. Otherwise this will be the first time since NES I’ll have skipped a Nintendo system launch.

Truly hope Nintendo realizes just how important this is for those of us who’ve amassed huge libraries both digital and physical. Personally speaking my library is over 400 titles now. I’m sure there are others in the same boat as me.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Dm9982

Xbox proves each generation that BC truly is important to a lot of gamers. The fact that I can boot up my Series X and play Fable, Fallout 3, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk, Elden Rings, and Outpost Koloki X is just awesome and amazing.

With each successive generation on Xbox we also got improvements for running previous Gen games on new hardware…. Rez boost from XB to 360 on titles like KOTOR, Rez boost/FPS boost for running 360 on XB1 and FPS boost for XB1 to Series X as seen on Fallout 4.

That last factor is a PRIME reason why Switch 2 should be BC. A lot of Third Party titles could seriously benefit from increased hardware power on Switch 2, like Witcher 3 and Mortal Kombat 1. Or even some first party titles like Pokémon S/V or BotW/TotK. I agree most first party titles don’t need a power increase to look/play better, but a couple like the ones mentioned surely could benefit.

The last point I’ll make, as shown by Xbox/Wii/WiiU when you release a console fully BC with the previous generation, you start that console with a MUCH larger library to choose from. It’s a smarter choice to make the system obsolete than the games. Games can be “Evergreen” whereas hardware really cannot due to eventual failure.

Even to this day gamers want to buy old NES and SNES, that right there should prove to everyone just how much of a good idea it is to, at the very least, maintain BC with the previous generation.

Edit - one last example I’ll use, Apple, Android and PC. All get new hardware while retaining the ability to play older titles. And those have FAR larger install bases than any console on the market. Take a lesson from them. Refresh hardware, maintain BC.

Re: Red Dead Redemption 2 Switch Rating Surfaces Online

Dm9982

@Mjoen I was actually going to post something similar. If you check the data mines for games like Scarlet/Violet, plus the OLED dock firmware, you see a tell tale sign that Nintendo was going to do a mid Gen update to the Switch. Willing to bet A lot of games around and beyond the OLED launch have a lot of auto scaling built in, ready to take advantage of new hardware, just as S/V does. If Switch 2 is indeed BC, which it likely is, then most games from OLED launch onward will automatically be upgraded just moving to the new hardware. I see this as the most likely case moving forward toward the Switch 2 launch.

It’s probably the reason we’re seeing a lot of the more massive titles from last Gen getting ports, like Arkham, Borderlands 3, and maybe RDR2.

Re: Soapbox: Can You Really 'Spoil' A Mario Game?

Dm9982

Totally depends on the person and Mario game I’m sure. But I do believe 2D Mario’s are much harder to spoil. The power ups are more spoiler than the stages and such honestly.

Small story from youth, back when SNES and Super Mario World hadn’t released yet, if you pre-ordered the system through, I believe it was Toys R Us…. That or being a Nintendo Power Subscriber…. You’d get an official Super Mario World guide showing you how to beat each stage, all the secrets, and how to beat the game in 13 stages using W2 ghost house pipe to Star World.

I studied that thing for 2 weeks leading up to the release. When the game came out I was more excited than I’d ever been, did the 13 stage trick first thing, and was so proud of myself for my accomplishment. Then I made a second file and finished the whole thing out 100%. All the “spoilers” I got for that game only lead to the excitement. I didn’t feel cheated out of anything or let down because I knew something about it in advance.

I’m the type of gamer that would like to know the ins and outs of the mechanics, and stage designs before I play so I can be prepared for anything. A lot of the probably stems from the NES era where everything was ultra difficult and you needed to memorize things. However, I don’t want story or plot reveal spoilers, or character spoilers. Or in 2D Mario titles, new power up spoilers. Those are fun things to discover as you go.

And that’s why I think it’s harder to spoil 2D Mario over 3D Mario. 2D has always been less story more stage design and power up usage. 3D Mario has always had more story, while maintaining a fair bit of stage and power up design.

Plot wise it’s almost always been Bowser kidnapping Peach, so that bit is hard to spoil anymore. But the characters involved in each story change from time to time like in SMB2 or Mario Galaxy…. That stuff I do consider spoiler.

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

@QuickSilver88 I concur, I haven’t had a reason to go from Ps4 Pro to Ps5 yet either. And as a matter of fact, I’m more looking toward Ally / Legion Go as I can access the pc versions of Ps5 exclusives on that, plus have access to all my Game Pass titles, and a few Xbox Play Anywhere titles like Starfield where since I own it on Series X, I automatically have the pc copy too.

I bought my X strictly because I had so much BC stuff digital, but didn’t have an Xbox to access it all as I gave my X1 away to a friend about 6 months after buying it. Getting an X just made sense as I had immediate access to Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Doom, Fable 1-3, Fallout 3/NV, and a bunch of other titles I purchased on 360/X1. Access to all the games I previously purchased years past was a sound reason to finally get a current Gen system.

And access is the prime reason I’m looking at the Legion Go / Ally type of device. Ps5, Gamepass, GoG (I want to play some old Kings Quest and Leisure Suit Larry, but don’t have a pc anymore), Xbox Anywhere titles…. The list goes on and on, and makes way more financial sense than a ps5.

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

MTX is a meh thing. I’m fine with full priced games having cosmetic MTX - Like MK1, Diablo 4, and Monster Hunter Rise as examples. It’s optional stuff, pay for it if ya want, doesn’t help you win by any means. I’m also fine with single player games having one time MTX dlc of reusable xp / loot boosts like a lot of JRPGs now days, including our beloved FE series. Don’t kid yourself, those dlc maps that have xp boosting or gear drops are indeed MTX. Hell I’m all for bringing back cheat menus and such in single player games, and I’d pay $2-3 bucks for that menu. I miss the days of Game Genie, ah the memories!

But yeah, back to the point, MK1 barely has any MTX, far more games are worse offenders.

As Reynolds said, I’m in the same boat, haven’t spent the Krystals that came with my premium pack, and likely won’t unless something truly awesome pops up.

In all reality, MTX in cosmetic fashion is nothing more than purchasing digital art.

Edit - After thought. A much worse offense than cosmetic MTX is games that release shallow, or more shallow than their predecessors, and then charge for season passes to complete the experience - Borderlands 3 was guilty of this. BL2, even without dlc was a much more complete game than BL3 without dlc. And BL3 didn’t really even come close until having most of its second season pass out. Unfortunately, a bunch of games are guilty of these types of practices anymore. DLC/Season Passes have replaced proper expansion packs and I feel this has truly hurt games as they tend to release much more shallow experiences than games of the past.

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

@DogDetective Ah that sucks, BUT, bright side, that does mean we’re getting patches/updates soon hopefully. Story mode is entertaining enough to replay and I still haven’t messed with the towers either, nor finished the tutorials.

I’m curious if switch is the only version with an incomplete Invasion currently, or if that was held back on all consoles at Early Access?

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

@topher6490 I believe this is the first release of a S/X/Ps5/Switch only retail release. Although if Gotham Knights comes to Switch that’ll be another. Hogwarts got a PS4/X1 release correct? Can’t think of many other multiplatform titles that didn’t also release on PS4/X1 if it came to Switch.

That said, the switch running this does prove that the engine is more than scalable to run on X1/Ps4…. Either a dev choice, or more likely, pressure from Sony and MS to discontinue previous Gen sales and focus on current. Makes sense on Xbox however as X1 can still stream most S/X titles, something that Ps4 players are left in the cold with.

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

@westman98 Having played both MK11 Ultimate recently and just finishing the MK1 story, I can safely say MK1 performs better. And that may be due to the combat mechanics / fight system being better, or because there’s less lag. MK1 def feels a LOT smoother in the fights. The cutscenes are jaw dropping. However when it drops from cut to fight it’s very reminiscent of browsing the Krypt in MK11.

It could be down to Sabre doing their magic, or just a mix of all of the above. It’s a play to see type of thing, the trailers don’t convey it well.

Re: Video: Mortal Kombat 1 Graphics Comparison Reveals Switch Performance & Resolution

Dm9982

Can confirm all this. Still, a great bit of fun. Finished the story mode yesterday, very good! Graphical glitches and long loads aside, it’s a very nice port. The fights are really smooth, and the game is more enjoyable than MK11 was.

Haven’t tried invasions yet, so can’t comment on them. Sabre did a good job on the port, and I have faith that over the next month or two all the graphical glitches will be ironed out, and hopefully the textures get bumped up a bit.

It is a bit jarring that almost all chars are super wide eyed at the beginning of the story fights, it’s like they’re missing their eyelids. But that’s just a graphical thing pre-fight. During fights the only noticeable stuff is sometimes the hair clips/tears and stretches for like 3-4 character lengths…. And the Klassic brutality sometimes leaves the head just floating. Which is actually hilarious 😂

Re: Mini Review: Summum Aeterna - A Rough-And-Ready Roguelite That Gets The Job Done

Dm9982

Game crashing is annoying, but in todays age that stuff can be patched and fixed thankfully, we aren’t in the 80s and 90s where the cart you buy is the final product. This is both annoying and nice at the same time, games use to have more extensive testing before release, but you’d be stuck with whatever didn’t get caught before release. Was def eyeing this before it launched and glad to see it reviewed decently! I’ll pick it up after the wave of Oct releases dies down, just dropped $100 each on MK1 and Starfield recently so I’m broke atm.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

Dm9982

It was a nice showing, nothing major for me. My favorite highlights were all indie based - Wargroove 2, Eastward DLC, and Contra. I’ll still pick up the vast majority of Nintendo releases, but most will be for the family/kiddos.

I’m stoked for the fans that finally get a little F Zero love, even if it’s not a sequel. And Thousand Year Door was one heck of a surprise announcement, even if I’m personally not interested in it.

All in all a good showing with coverage for a lot of fans I think!

I’m still crossing my fingers for a Twilight Princess and Wind Waker releases on Switch. Would also love if Bethesda would bring Fallout 3 and NV to Switch. 4 would be awesome too, but even more unlikely. Ah, I can dream.

Re: Unity To Charge Developers A Fee Each Time A Game Is Installed Next Year

Dm9982

@Raffles Awesome, thanks for the insight! I was truly curious. And I was more thinking about during the Wii U era where there seemed to be even more struggle. But perhaps the Unity of then was less documented and developer friendly as the Unity of now.

And you’re right I never noticed Ori being Unity, but those games run and look great!

Re: Unity To Charge Developers A Fee Each Time A Game Is Installed Next Year

Dm9982

@Raffles I was wondering. Curious question, is it harder to utilize than say Unreal or other comparable engines? It just seems that most games that use it, at least on consoles, perform at a lesser rate than games made in other engines, or sometimes a port is deemed impossible, even when seemingly the Unity game should be less demanding than a different but comparable game in a comparable engine…..

I’ve had some programming training, but never used Unity or Unreal. All old school like Cobal, Python, C++ and some Java, so a general understanding of how things might operate under the hood, but never actually used the newer development platforms.

Re: Unity To Charge Developers A Fee Each Time A Game Is Installed Next Year

Dm9982

This is an odd and messed up decision. Firstly, as others have stated, Unity is notoriously hard to deal with…. Devs struggle all the time to make games run smooth and optimized in Unity. So, maybe I’m missing something, but this seems like major incentive to never use Unity again. Not sure why devs choose it in the first place when other engines work so much better and easier. Maybe initial cost to develop in Unity?

Edit - after reading posts I realize it’s free to start in Unity. Explains a lot actually. I feel sorry for all the devs of mobile games that are likely suddenly going to be hit ultra hard with fees.
On the flip tho, probably a lot less shovelware free games trying to make a Buck with ads…. Still a crappy move from the company I’d think for any developers using Unity.

Haven’t had much time with it so far, beat two bosses, but overall I’d say a def improvement over 20XX. I love how the camera is now static and doesn’t zoom in and out like it did in 20XX.

Haven’t gotten much on unlocks so far, so I can’t say if the item system is better than the first or not, but I’m hoping so. First had a good item system but coulda been even better.

Hope they brought back the transmogrification sets, like the owl set from 20XX. I don’t mean the same ones, just that ability that turns you into a different beast of a character altogether.

Re: Embracer Group Reportedly Looking To Sell Borderlands Dev Gearbox Entertainment

Dm9982

@NintendoByNature BL1 is good, but def the weakest of the bunch. Def play for the story and background to everything. Then, even tho it released afterwards, play Pre-Sequel next, it’s short and nice, and does a lot of things right, except for end game. Save BL2 for last. There’s so much content, and that game really is nearly perfect. Only major issue is slag, which using it becomes a requirement in UVHM, and that’s annoying. But yeah, BL2 will ruin the rest of the series for you. I haven’t played BL3 lately with all its dlcs and updates, last I played was first dlc. And aside from much better skill system, the game paled in comparison to BL2 in every way. That may be different now. Can’t wait to play the complete edition on Switch

Re: Embracer Group Reportedly Looking To Sell Borderlands Dev Gearbox Entertainment

Dm9982

Number one, I’m glad they didn’t treat Gearbox like Volition. That woulda been really tragic seeing two great studios close down back to back.

Secondly, I always like to play the “what if/who buys it” game. I could see gearbox probably going to MS, it would honestly fit the best there. But Gearbox would do well under Nintendo as well, strengthening Nintendos ability to produce different genres like fps, action, and rpgs. Part of the Gearbox studio is made up of ex-Blizzard staffers from back in Diablo 2 days, arguably the best half of those staffers.

I pray EA doesn’t acquire, as every studio they’ve acquired that I loved has gone to pot. Maxis and BioWare I’m lookin at you, I miss the greatness you once had!

Sony could opt for it, but I feel Sony is looking to strengthen their Asian studios more so than Western. Also they’d likely make it completely first party, where at least if MS/Nintendo bought there’s a chance at being multiplatform still. Def if EA did.

Not sure which other companies might be interested in purchasing them…..
