Re: Animal Crossing's Isabelle Joins The Fight In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

I’m happy to see them put in another female character. Smash is one of the few games where’s you have such good options to pick from you can have anyone over and even if it’s somebody who’s not into video game’s they can find a character that they feel like trying. I also remember thinking, “holy crap animal crossing people are gonna be pissed I’d they thought this was a new game”. And then there was the 2019 reveal and I was relieved. 2019 is looking like it’s gonna be packed!

Re: A Brand New RPG From The Creators Of Pokémon Is Coming To Switch

DavidMac

I’m hoping they try some stuff out I this game. I’d love to see them move Pokemon in a more actio. RPG manner. (Which is funny since I normally prefer turn based more.) I think it would make more sense given the trainer/monster dynamic. Instead of having direct control over your Pokemon you’d be commanding it and it could ignore you or something.

Anyway game looks like it could be good. If I like what else I see I’ll totally buy.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Is Finally Coming To A Nintendo Console

DavidMac

I’m super excited for this! I played 7 by an emulator years ago but I’ll happily play it again. (Even if the story is dumb, fight me)

9 is also an awesome game and I’ll gladly play it again! I’ll probably get X and X2 as I’ve never played those but hear they’re good. It seems square is really investing in the Switch. Let’s hope they have a team figuring out Mario RPG 2!

Re: Square Enix Announces Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD For Nintendo Switch

DavidMac

I think I'll check this out, it looks a little weird, the characters seem less animated than the ones in the DS remake of 3. Still part of me wants to buy it just to encourage Square to stop ignoring Nintendo. I'm really hoping after Octopath they come out with more games like it, specifically turn based ones, where you actually manage your party. None of this, you have your other party members auto attack and shout stuff crap.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Says There’s A Possibility The Next Zelda Title Will Be On Switch

DavidMac

If they don’t use the same engine and make a fast sequel like majoras mask they’re nuts. The engine is practically perfect. The mechanics are fantastic. Heck I’d be 100% fine I’d they used the same world map and just pushed hyrule forward a couple hundred years and gave us the Legend of Zelda a Breath to the Past. Or Link to the Wild? Either way. Just give us access to the dark world in the world of breath of the wild. Make Vati the villain this time if you want, or claim Gannon didn’t really die. Whatever, don’t care. Just do it! Can you imagine if you had twice the world map to uncover?!

Re: Switch Retail Game Sales In Japan Surpass Lifetime Wii U Retail Sales In 18 Months

DavidMac

@Razer
I suspect that they didn't want to confuse things for people buying a Switch for Zelda or Mario. I suspect we'll see the HD remakes of Windwaker and Twilight Princess and Mario 3D World next year after all the Smash hype dies down. If you notice the ports that they brought over were games that didn't have another game in that franchise coming out. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe came out because they're probably still working on Mario Kart 9 and don't expect it to be out any time soon. DKC came out because they probably invested a lot in it and aren't actively developing a sequel (or if they are it's a long ways out.) Hyrule Warriors launched a year after BtoW and wasn't a legit Zelda game but it did build off the hype. Captain Toad is in the Mario Universe but it's not a Mario game at all. Aces is a majorly improved upgrade to Ultra Smash on Wii U (and probably used a lot of the code base). Splatoon 2 was in the same boat as Tennis, refused a lot of code and assets but also put in a lot of new stuff to make it a legit sequel. And Bayo's sequel is still a long way's off. So none of them confuse people when somebody heads to the store and says, "My kid wants the Mario game for Switch".

I suspect they wouldn't have considered 3D World within a year of Odyssey because there'd be that small worry of "What if our last gen Mario game does really well compared to our new one?" For Zelda that wasn't a worry, but they probably do want to avoid a bunch of articles saying, "This is why BotW is so much better than Windwaker!" etc. My guess is though, that they must have at least a few people working on making sure all the Wii U games that did really well are ported to the Switch, and then they'll just keep them in their back pocket. Really this year we've had a strong number of ports, plus some great new games slated for the year, (Tennis, Mario Party, Smash, Kirby, Pokemon, plus the Octo Expansion) so it's not as if there've been not a lot of new first party games. It's just that the early part of the year when sales are normally slower had several ports of some really good games that it made sense to rerelease there. (Also I think they had Yoshi planned for spring originally but it fell through)

So my guess is we will either see a few ports next spring to provide some new games for people who haven't played them, without Nintendo having to use a title that it'd rather safe for the fall or holiday season. My guess is that they're probably working on sequels to both Breath of the Wild and Odyssey (they'd be crazy not to) with the same engines sticking largely to very similar mechanics. But they'll probably want to make sure they're really killer, so they'll hopefully spend enough time on them, and release some Wii U ports from those series to hold people over.

Next year they'll probably keep the Smash hype train going with periodic introductions of new fighters. (I'm hoping for a season pass approach, they seem to be gravitating to those, which is good.) But like I said if any of the games they have planned begin to fall behind, that's when I expect they'll throw out a few more Wii U ports, or even Wii remasters. (If they don't have people working on HD remasters of 64 and Sunshine they're insane.) I'd also love to see them look into upscaling the N64 Zeldas that they remastered for the 3DS. My understanding is that those were really faithful while offering some QOL improvements, and I think people would be happy to have Ocarina HD even if it wasn't super fancy looking. (Though if they did decide to rebuild Ocarina in the BotW engine I wouldn't complain.)

Given their plans to make the Switch an 8 year life span, I really hope that they do bring over a lot of their back catalogue. (Especially since I suspect that the Switch could very well be like the 3DS was in terms of releasing hardware upgrades that tweak the outside and put more powerful insides that allow for some games that are designed to run on the new hardware that the old ones couldn't handle. I expect we'll see that a little after the PS5 and XboxWhatever launch. As soon as Nvidea comes out with an ARM processor that can outdo a PS4 (which they will eventually, ARM is actually branching out into processors made for desktops and laptops that should match the best Intel can do. And really game consoles are all about the GPU anyway).

I should probably stop writing stuff. Good night.

Re: Shovel Knight's Next DLC Pack Is A Super Smash Bros. Style Multiplayer Brawler

DavidMac

It’s a mode meant for couch multi player. If 3DS owners were dumb enough to assume that they’d be able to play a four player local multiplayer game on their single player handheld that’s on 3DS owners. This is like getting mad that your iPhone doesn’t support a mouse. There’s no place to plug a mouse in and there’s no reason to have a mouse. Just because you thought something wrong, doesn’t meant they did something wrong.

They’re still putting king of cards on the 3DS and they’re still supporting those installs. They’re just not releasing something that was designed for local multiplayer on a system that doesn’t do local multiplayer without a crap load of extra development work.

Nobody shafted you. You decided to get mad because you don’t have real problems.

Re: Shovel Knight's Next DLC Pack Is A Super Smash Bros. Style Multiplayer Brawler

DavidMac

@rjejr yeah, your argument makes sense if you don’t realize how much extra work p2p multiplayer is. Now don’t get me wrong, if Nintendo wanted to roll their own set of plug and play APIs for connecting online to do multiplayer and have all the match making and what not working for the 3DS, I’d think you had a point.

But if you’ll notice the game doesn’t do online multi player, it does local multiplayer because networked multiplayer is way too much work to expect them to bother with for two consoles that are on their last legs.

But go ahead and be snide, it just makes it clear how little you understand what goes into making the games you take for granted.

Re: Octopath Traveler Composer Feels "Relieved" That Fans Enjoy The Game's Soundtrack

DavidMac

The visuals and the sound in this game were fantastic! Such a fantastic game. There’s a few things that would have been great to improve on. (Having it matter who’s in your party when events happen, and having better writing to wrap up some of the final chapters.)

I had a blast with this game and still haven’t gotten around to levelling up enough to be able to beat the last boss.

Re: Switch Retail Game Sales In Japan Surpass Lifetime Wii U Retail Sales In 18 Months

DavidMac

I’d still love to see some more Wii U ports. Specifically the two HD Zelda remakes and Pikmin 3. Also still think 3D World would be a good port to move over, it was a great party game.

My guess is Mario Maker will get a sequel rather than a port, and I think it could be a good idea to bundle New Super Mario U with it. (I’m still hoping they announce Mario Maker as “we made a new Mario game” show off a bunch of mechanics, and then finish with, “so this is a new Mario game. But we made it in Mario Maker, and you can make not just your own levels, but your own GAMES!” And share with friends.

Re: Cult RPG Hit Undertale Arrives In North America And Europe On 18th September

DavidMac

@Dr_Corndog Steam is always going to be cheaper for indies because that’s where they cane out first. There’s a lot lot of people who will buy this so long as the price isn’t insane. The price will probably come down after X amount of time just like most games. They’d be leaving money on the table if they released a really well liked game at a sale price to start off. That’s not how you ensure your favourite games get sequels.

Re: Special Reserve Games Reveals Enter The Gungeon Physical Switch Release

DavidMac

@Heavyarms55 where do you think these indie developers are going to get the money to buy the thousands of dollars worth of stock of physical carts to release these games they don’t have a big following yet?

If you don’t want to support indie games, fine, don’t. But they make all their money once the game sells. And they can sell to same people who don’t need a cart for a game that’s only a few hundred megs and then make enough money to buy the carts to sell to crazy people like you who won’t buy a game unless they do a physical release.

Most of these are more intended as collectors editions for people who adore the game. Either deal with whatever bit of crazy in your head or don’t, but stop blaming cash strapped developers as if they’re trying to scam you, they’re not. Grow up.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles X's Elma Revealed For Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Available Today

DavidMac

I honestly think I’m gonna pass on Torna. Xenoblade 2 just had too many things that made me raise my eyebrows in a not good way.

Anti matter they did actually have a “obviously gay” male blade (probably not your type) none of the male characters are especially nice to look at. This game’s understanding of sexy is just weirdly balanced with almost no sense of self awareness. Some parts were great but ... yeah.

FYI the story summary is essentially “find techno Holy Spirit with multiple personalities and travel the world until you face off against evil/snide techno Jesus .”

Re: Random: Amazon's Gaming Pre-Order Discount Cancellation Sparks Nintendo Sale Surge

DavidMac

I was planning on getting smash digitally but then Amazon had it for like under 50 CND (it’ll be like 80 CND +tax once it comes out. Switch games generally end up being just under 90 here) and I was shocked. I hate Amazon they’re a terribly unethical company but that was enough to get me to splurge. Also ordered Let’s Go Eevee at that price since its cheap enough that I can justify it. I knew I’d want to play the game and Pokémon games never go on sale.

Re: Feature: What's Left To Be Announced For Smash Bros. Ultimate On Switch?

DavidMac

I'm hoping one of the reasons we didn't get Dixie yet is because she's not an echo fighter of Diddy (which would make sense since Diddy has a ton of unique Diddy moves) and that this direct they were showing off more echo fighters.

Also for people saying that there haven't been cross series echo fighters, Gannondorf was a Captain Falcon echo fighter.

I'm not sure why but I'm really hoping that Dixie makes it in, she's one of the biggest characters on the SNES that aren't in that Nintendo owns.

As far as Tails goes, I'd sooner see him over Shadow, but given the emphasis on villains and echo fighters, I suspect Shadow has a decent chance. I also think Sega hasn't 100% bought into Mania and would rather promote 3D sonic over 2D awesome Sonic. (Let's be honest, Up B should be Electric Shield, Forward B should be flame shield, down B should be bubble shield.) I think Tails makes more sense as an assist trophy.

Also I think it'd be awesome to see them do Issac the same way as Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings, have the first one be Issac then Mia, Garet, Felix etc. They could even be like "And now we're going to introduce 8 new characters!" And then just show off the whole cast from Golden Sun! (They'd have to have several character additions to go afterward so fans didn't get pissy.)

Re: Original Developer Working On Handheld Versions Of Mighty No. 9 Reveals “Zero Progress” Was Made

DavidMac

I think the thing that really made M9 suck is that the movement was just BAD! The controls felt stiff and it felt like it wasn’t your fault when you died over and over again. (Kinda like Mega Man 1)

It seems like he’s more of an idea guy. But clearly he doesn’t know what good movement feels like, or can’t do it himself because whoever was in charge of that did not deliver.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai Will Continue To Make Smash Bros. Games "If The Demand Is There"

DavidMac

With Nintendo’s expected life cycle for the Switch I imagine we won’t need another Smash for a good long time. They could probably allow him to work on another game but just consult a bit on continued DLC. (If they’re smart they’ll do year long season passes for 20 bucks a year and just give you all the stuff they release that year. Given that is Smash I could honestly see them doing 2 one year season passes.)

Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo has the rights to license Cloud, Simon and others for as long as they want to it at least the next three games in the series. If they went to these lengths to get everyone back I doubt they want to have to negotiate again and have Square or Capcom or Konami hold anything over their head.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct?

DavidMac

Some people are suggesting that there’s no more big female characters to put in. Dixie Kong is an obvious one. But we could also go with Terra from FF6, Lara Croft would be another one, Chun Li, Jill from Resident Evil.

Other than Rabbid Peach I’m kinda out of ideas at this point ... wow sexism in video games is really bad.

Re: Feature: What's Left To Be Announced For Smash Bros. Ultimate On Switch?

DavidMac

I thought I heard Smash was going to be like 16 gigs?

Either way I'm excited about K Rool, though I feel like his reveal would have been where they should have put in Dixie. It's a shame that Dixie isn't in yet, Smash is better than a lot of games for having female characters that aren't sexualized in the same way as other fighting games, and I think Dixie just makes so much sense. I'm probably bias because I loved the DKC games on SNES, and she was playable in more of them than DK was! I don't think she should be an echo fighter of Diddy or anyone else though. Her hair opens up so many opportunity for cool specials. Her third jump could be like the one from Tropical Freeze, and her down special could be similar to her hover from the SNES games.

I'd also absolutely love to see Issac in Smash, plus they could go the koopa kid route and have the other 7 characters all appear as alternate costumes (they can all technically have the same abilities if they equip different djinn.)

I also really hope that Mario x Rabbids was a hit soon enough for the Smash devs to want to include some of their characters, personally given that she was the only one in both the main game and the DK adventure, I'm betting on Rabbid Peach as a main character. (Though they could have her steal other characters weapons if they want to give her moves that match others, I mean she's Rabbid peach, you wouldn't put it past her.)

I think Tails as a fighter is dumb, he makes more sense as an assist trophy. Knucles made way more sense as a fighter but they made him an assist trophy. As far as Shadow, I don't know who you're talking about, the only sonic games that have ever come out were 1, 2, CD, 3, Knuckles and Mania.

Also I'd be down for Geno hardcore.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Will Feature A Single-Player Classic Mode

DavidMac

I'm very excited about classic mode. I'll probably play that mode a ton. I always felt a sense of satisfaction from beating that on the N64. I don't think Smash 4 had classic did it? If it did it didn't feel as good because I never played it. I felt like Smash 4 had really lousy single player content. Which sucked because I'm in my 30s and all my friends from high school decided to shun me when I came out in college. (Literally kicking their asses in Smash is the only thing I miss about them.)

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles Developer Monolith Soft Has Hired More Employees

DavidMac

I hope some of the new employees know how to tell their boss that when every female character has breasts bigger than your head and clothes that make them look like battle blow up dolls, you look like a creep.

I'd love to play another Monolith game that isn't as creepy/pervy as XBC2 was. I enjoyed it overall and finished it, but I'm honestly at the point where I can't recommend it. (Which is a shame because I loved Xenogears.)

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct Livestream Coming This Wednesday

DavidMac

I confess I was surprised that they're doing another Smash Direct given that the last direct was pretty much mostly Smash. But I'm not sure how much they could have planned for the rest of this year.

We just had Mario + Rabbids DLC, Octopath and Tennis Aces, so June and July were pretty packed. (I haven't finished the Donkey Kong Adventure because I've been focused on Octopath). There was also the Crash Collection, Fortnite etc that launched recently.

August seems like it's going to be mostly indie games and smaller titles, though it does have Overcooked 2, Okami HD, and Monster Hunter which are all titles people were saying they wanted.

September is going to be Xenoblade 2's DLC that's big enough to be a retail release apparently. (Still not sure if I really even liked XBC2 enough to buy the DLC, I got through it ... not sure I really need more open worlds filled with impractically sized breasts)
Dragon Ball Fighter Z is also coming out, not that I'm interested in that but I think it's a big title.

In October Mega Man 11, Starlink, and Super Mario Party are coming.

In November it'll be Pokemon.

December will be Smash.

Pokemon company is going to take care of all the media for Pokemon. So at this point it really only makes sense to hype up Super Mario Party and Smash Bros.

Has 2018 been lighter on epic tent poles? Well we have Mario and Zelda last year which was insane. We also had Splatoon and a rerelease of Mario Kart. So yeah there were a lot of big reasons to buy a Switch last year. But this year we've had some really nice games too, especially from companies who aren't Nintendo, which is really nice to see after having lived with the Wii U.

I think Nintendo probably knew that had to go heavy in the first year to get the sales up, then in year two they could let some of their partners fill in the gaps while they worked on new titles. I think next year with Yoshi, Fire Emblem, and and a few other games we'll probably have a great year. (I kinda expect them to port a few more Wii U games, no reason Pikmin 3 and Mario 3D world can't happily live on the Switch.)

I'm really hoping for the next 2D Mario they showcase it and then a month after it's been on the market they announce that the whole thing was made in the new version of Mario Maker.

Either way, Nintendo always has things in the oven and just because we're not seeing them this year doesn't mean they're not making them, and doesn't mean that Smash is in any way taking away from them. They just know Smash is going to sell like crazy and drive up the install base.
