Since the delay of the latest Nintendo Direct, multiple game sales have gone live, demos have been released and now there's even a new game announcement.
Square Enix has revealed Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD will arrive "soon" on the Nintendo Switch. The free-to-start title was originally released earlier this year on Android and iOS devices and is said to be an abridged version of Final Fantasy XV which first arrived in 2016. Here's the PR courtesy of Gematsu:
Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD, fans and newcomers alike can follow the journey of crown prince Noctis and his brothers in arms, Prompto, Ignis and Gladiolus, with fully voiced key event scenes and faithfully recreated battles.
All of the treasured moments from Final Fantasy XV, like driving the Regalia across breath-taking landscapes, camping, chocobo riding and more, can be experienced in a whole new way with the game’s creatively reimagined art style and in HD resolution for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 system versions.
This announcement follows rumours earlier this week when the mobile game icon appeared on the PlayStation Store. Since then, it's now been confirmed this version of the game will cost £24.99 / $29.99 and is 40% off this price in the first week.
It's also worth noting how last September, FFXV Director Hajime Tabata teased the full Final Fantasy experience could eventually show up on Switch. Not long after he made these comments, the Pocket Edition of the game was unveiled.
Take a look at the trailer and tell us in the comments if you're excited Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition HD is coming to Switch.

Never thought I'd see the day, but...nice to see, regardless.
This game shouldn't exist. And to make matters worse, the Switch version isn't even released in the same day as the other consoles. I can hear the jokes already
Welp.
I knew it from the original mobile announcement this was probably the most the Switch will get.
But hey, Switch get's something sorta like a mainline Final Fantasy after twenty years.
This one was probably going to be in the Direct.
Nice. Looks better than the original.
Yeah, it’s a no from me dawg .gif
I’ll get the botched port of the full game whenever that comes out.
@StephenYap3
Was going to say the EXACT same thing just before you posted it.
Not making this turn-based is a huge missed opportunity. Combat doesn't exactly look fun.
Nothing more exciting than mobile ports coming to Switch!
Really? F&&& off!
Maybe I'm pety, but this art style is such a turn off, I won't play the game. I'd be fine with 24fps 480p if they had to go that low, but at least keep the original style.
The game is very dramatic, but with this art, the drama falls flat, and nothing can be taken seriously.
idk about getting this. why pay for it when i can just get it for free on IOS and android.
I will reserve my opinion till I see reviews. It still may be worth a go so no reason to throw a holy fit just yet. Feels a bit like the hate Federation Force got because it wasn't Prime 4.
I also didn't see all this hate for Fallout Shelter considering this is somewhat similar to what Bethesda did. I guess Bethesda was put more on a pedestal because of their already heavy support.
they couldn't animate the faces at all? the tone and style are not clicking.
More like Life Support Edition
I can already hear the cows crying...
With all that unnecessary teasing and comments from Tabata, this is what we get. 1. He should have just kept his mouth closed, 2. Easy cash grab. iOS/Android version for me. (already playing it there )
IMO back then Tabata should've just set the record straight that the actual game couldn't run on the Switch. Then my feelings for this version could've been good. Instead he gave fans the PR roller coaster ride. He just took the system for granted. Again, IMO..
And considering this took more than a decade which should've been a FF13 spin-off, I understand they needed to do everything to make up for the costs...in the expense of releasing an unfinished game. I wouldn't even consider this as a mainline FF game to be honest. For a FF JRPG the story was so lackluster. Good for the people who liked it though. Right now I'm more interested in a new FF Tactics game.
/endOfRant
@TripleX
So are you hinting piracy?It is not free on IOS or android at all. Or you are taking free to start as free.
I'm not mad. The announcement made me laugh to much to be any form of displeased, holy hell.
AKA "porting the real game was too hard"
Does anyone know if they added all of the new content to this version? Like the DLC and the various main story updates?
@Spoony_Tech I'm completely uninterested in the game, but that's only because I'm disinterested in anything Final Fantasy these days, preferring instead the approach Square is taking with Bravely and Octopath. You are absolutely correct, though, in the parallels with Federation Force; the hate has the same source and is just as unwarranted.
@Severian Sorry about that
@EightBitMan Dude, you're trolling at four in the morning, which makes you unbelievably pathetic. Just go to bed.
@PanurgeJr It's not quite as unwarranted as with Federation Force. The game is already out on mobile, and well known to cut out a significant amount of content from the original, including pretty much all of the sidequests where character development happens and anything DLC. Unless we hear that's changing, it's a barebones fighting system attached to an incomplete story with a boring art style.
@EightBitMan Except this is also coming to PS4 and Xbox One.
I like the art style, actually. It's a shame that the faces don't move, but other than that it is aesthetically pleasing and I have less trouble telling the character apart (Something about them being rendered realisticly and all wearing black makes them blend together to me, a far cry from the always at least memorable character designs from the othe FFs). I might be interested in picking this up, who knows?
The confirmation of this lends real weight to the rumoured announcements that were going to be in last nights Direct.
If it’s a success: “I see all of you Switch users like mobile ports, Square Enix spits out Final Fantasy All the Bravest Enjoy”
If it’s a failure: “I see you Switch users don’t like major releases, Bummer, no more games on the Switch!”
Black Desert Mobile looks better than this.
Y'all will complain but this is the first FF we get since 6. Not even World of FF was on a Nintendo console.
@Mrtoad I think after the success of Octopath and the fact that Square have established a new division to exclusively make Switch games means that's not going to be the case.
I'll just get the regular version on PC. No point of me getting this Mobile Version. When, i can get the real deal instead.
Monkey paw version of getting mainline FF titles back on Nintendo.
Imma be real with you, chief
No one wanted this
(Maybe the actual FFXV, just not this)
a port of a mobile title which is based on one of the worst Final Fantasy games ever made?
yeah no thanks..
Was probably meant for the direct, but it would've been just as uninteresting there as well. So nothing of value lost here.
Edit: auto-correct changing my words again.
Does anyone else have the skip card? I have the skip card. UNO!
Lol!... If this was the garbage in the Direct, we didn't miss much 🙃
I will wait to hear more, but a port of a mobile title is a good way to have me expect it to be junk.
I thought Square Enix had finally realized that Switch owners love a good JRPG when Octopath sold out repeatedly.
I'd much rather have ports of last gen Final Fantasy titles than a dumbed down mobile game.
LOL, what a piece of downgrade, even Wii had somehow tolerable ports of AAA games. Just look at Xenoblade 2 - that's how FF15 should look on Switch. I can only hope DQ wouldn't be a "pocket" edition.
@StephenYap3
No need to apologize dude, I just thought it was hilarious two guys making the exact same comment at the same time and I decided against it literally just before the moment your post appeared.
I couldn't care less about this particular game. What is clear is that Harry Potter, Yoshi, the sales, Mega man demo, and this were all gonna be in the Direct. These things are a bit complicated for marketing since there surely were arrangements made that couldn't be honoured (for a good reason). All is planned even to the couple of seconds that the publisher was going to get in that video.
If rumors are true, there were going to be some nice surprises and we can still expect them since usually those game announcements or updates would take more time to be released and really want that fanfare of being in a Direct.
Nintendo now needs to rearrange all that timing quickly because the Online service won't wait and they surely would like to add a couple of things to subtitute the Mega man demo, Yoshi name (even if it's just a teaser like Metroid Prime 4) and those other minor things.
We got quite some news today, we'll surely have more 'small' news in these following days since I bet Nintendo will set the Direct for at least another week.
Do not want.
they need to start spending money on reviving act raiser
You know Square...a Fortune Street game on the Switch would be nice.
Why should I pay for a smartphone port? I don't even like the super casualty of mobile games.
It seems such a shallow experience compared to the full version.
Hope it flops deeply.
Give us the damn proper real original game.
F*** this.
If Bethesda can squeeze real Doom and Wolfenstein 2 onto Switch - REAL current-gen games - then Square can use that Octopath cash and find a way to put the real one on there.
I don't care if it's cel-shaded, downgraded, reworked in last gen's engine, or delayed to hell and back. Us getting mobile versions of current-gen titles is a disgrace no matter how you slice it.
Mario Galaxy looks better than this. even WIND WAKER looks better. At least in that one, the characters could emote properly.
You said you had trouble porting it, huh? Then here's a thought: why not work with Nintendo? I'm sure that they'll let you borrow BOTW's engine if you just ask nicely. Octopath ensured that.
You're better than this, Square Enix. Sell the real version with a free SD card and price it at $99.99 if you have to. I'll gladly pay, and many others will too.
Just when I thought, if we get a FF at all it’ll be a good one, right?! Nope. Hard nope. Not even close. I only hope it contributes to the possibility but I for one cannot give in to this game. And I still plan on picking up Octopath.
It’s out now on the Xbox store, on sale too for the next 6 days for $23.99 Canadian, regular $39.99.
Not for me.
*Groannn.... thanks?
But how are you supposed to play it on the go, use your phone? Switch can only be played at home (per fanboys), meaning you've only got 2 ways to play it- at home on Switch, or on the go with your phone. It'd have been nice if they put it on the 3DS so you could take it with you, but I guess mobile is their portable route. Oh well....
Let's we forget about FF XV.
Both the Realistic & Chibi looked Super MEH for me.
I would rather got FF XII The Zodiac Age & FF X/X-2 HD Remaster for Nintendo Switch with SAME Content as the PS4 version.
@pika677
Please tell me what fanboys have claimed that the Switch can only be played at home?
A FFVIII remake on Switch would be great... Or even ports of 7 to 9. XV was an average game and I assume this pocket addition isn't any better.
"Reclaim your throne, Nintendo!"
I know there are people unhappy about this, and I'd have loved the full FF XV experience on Switch, but it's a start... A fresh start for numbered Final Fantasy on a Nintendo console (console/handheld, but whatever ) after over 22 long years.
I still remember wasting time at a convenience store, flipping through the May 1996 issue of GamePro Magazine (RIP), and reading about Square jumping ship with Final Fantasy to PlayStation. This after I'd read about that Final Fantasy VI tech demo for the Nintendo 64, and was so looking forward to what the series would have to offer on the new console. I was a Nintendo-only gamer at the time, so it was personally devastating!
Even if it's "Pocket Edition", it's also FINAL FANTASY with roman friggin numerals, on a Nintendo console... and it's been a long damn time! The teenage Nintendo fanboy in me is excited as can be!
I don't understand why people are so mad about this. The original game doesn't even look great on PS4 and xBox One, with a lot of pop ups and frame rate stutters. Playing this game 4K 60FPS is impossible with the current GPU's, unless you have SLI.
Even with steady 24 fps (which is horrible) and 480P, this game wouldnt have run that well at all. This is nothing compared to Doom or Wolfenstein (2).
Plus, most people here didn't like the game, so it doesn't matter if it would be the Pocked Edition or Original on Switch, it still would be hated anyway.
Meh is all I had to say, they had one chance to prove themselves to give us a pristine version of the original and they choose the lazy way by giving us this trash version instead. Roman numeral version or not they already ruin it by making two of them an MMORPG and adding trash sequels to some of them. At this point I rather had remakes or even ports of FF1-X, every main FF game after FFX are disgustingly terrible (except FFXII which is at least kinda decent and related to the Tactics games which I love). If you see this Square just give us an HD compilation of Final Fantasy I-X, no X-2, no Type-0, no Dirge of whatever that thing is, and no MMO. A new Crystal Chronicles and another Tactics game would also be nice too.
Only one bad thing about this not waiting on the rescheduled Nintendo Direct to be announced: It would've been so fun to see the emotional reaction from old-time Nintendo gamers on YouTube to numbered Final Fantasy returning to a Ninty console after over 20 years!
They didn't even bother to release it along the other versions!
@FarkyValentine
FF VIII (8) HD Remake will be like Halelujah !
Liberi Fatali, Balamb Garden theme, GF in actions, The romantic scene between Squall & Rinoa, etc in HD will be like a Heavenly Masterpiece.
@EvilRegal The problem with this is that this isn't a true number FF sequel, it's a spinoff that got turn into one which got turn into a cash-cow with the number tacked on.
@westman98 They’re made out of straw, so he can burn them easily without having to make actual arguments.
Well, I get the frustrations to be sure, but I venture to hope this is a first step. I've never played FF before, and only own Nintendo consoles, so I may give this a shot. The advantage to me I guess is that while it might end up being a poor representation of the series, I can only go upwards with any real mainline game I play in the future
@Saego Even if the game was terrible, Square already promise that they are bringing the actual version, instead they decided to take the easy way out and just throw this in just to say at least you still got a FF. Final Fantasy today is just in name only, Tetsuya Nomura and Tabata doesn't know how to evolve the series or make it appeal anymore. It's sad how Dragon Quest is able to keep its magic and charms even today but Final Fantasy had lost it and exist only in name with none of the charms that made it great anymore.
Mobile game ? Bwhahah
I'm skipping it.
Either your port something properly or you don't so... F*off
@retro_player_22
But for me, FF X-2 was Much Better than FF XV / FF XIII (And the sequels : FF XIII-2 + Lightning Returns).
At least some Pop version of Final Fantasy X with Charlie's Angel vibe, some Pop Idol (Yuna), some fanservices (The costumes of the girls, so fashionable and sexy), Simpler gameplay. Of course the storyline of FF X-2 was a MESS, didn't really necessary sequel, but at least the gameplay of FF X-2 was fun than FF X.
Switch is just like the 3DS getting all the dumbed down ports. (LOL) At least the Wii U still got it's dignity without getting any ports.
@OorWullie
What else was in the Direct rumor that included FFXVPE? There are more rumors than grains of sand outside of Figaro Castle. I can't keep track of 'em all!
Seems like a good deal for people who want to try out FFXV. I was disappointed with it so a moobile version would be even more unlikely. It's definitely not FFVII thru FFIX. I am glad I got Octopath Traveler instead.
I almost feel like I'm playing Rocket League because of all negativeness lol
I'm playing the original FF XV on the PS4 right now and I must say that it is one of the worst FF games in the series by far in my opinion. If you are a fan of the series you're not missing out on much here. Instead I suggest you play what ever games in the series you might have missed out on. If you own the SNES Classic Mini the absolute best of them all is there in FF VI.
If its just a cartoony version of the real XV, then I can assure you its a good game. I’m an old school Final Fantasy guy, and I think this one was a solid entry. I think I’ll stick with my PS4 Royal Edition with all the DLC, but if I didn’t already own that digitally, I’d have gunned for this one. May cave and get Dragon Quest 11 if they don’t hurry with news the Switch version. Gotta have my Dragon Warrior.
Also. Port begging for the two Vita Mana games, Adventures and Secret remastered. That’d be a solid physical release package. You Turks agents listening? Lol
Edit: I saw the comment above me. My friends and I loved it. Its not a traditional FF though. So I can see reasons why some people wouldn’t like it.
@bert0503
You should definitely give FF VI a go then, if VII was your starting point.
I’ve got Wolfenstein 2 and Skyrim on my Switch and this is the best they can do?! Disappointing. I’ll keep my cash for the Dragon Quest that will one day (hopefully) be released.
@EvilRegal I wouldn't want to say anything to avoid spoiling it for others. I would leave a link but I'm actually starting to question whether I really saw this leak or dreamt it haha. I've searched but can't find it. If it was just a dream then I must be on to something as FFXI Pocket Edition definitely featured. Let's just say it's going to be a good one.
Even though the gameplay looks fun, 29.99 € is too much. Waiting for a sale then. :/
Said it on PushSquare and I'll say it here too. £24.99 for a crap mobile game based on the worst Final Fantasy? Get lost SqEnix.
Came here thinking people would be happy about this news. Apparently I was wrong. Did anyone really think we would get the real FF XV anyway? Isn’t the game kinda sucky anyway?
@OorWullie I understand, and thank you for thinking of spoiling others, when I wasn't. The shock of numbered FF back on a Nintendo console "Cloud"-ed my mind! :3 I think I've seen the rumor, and I'll happen upon it again.
@retro_player_22 The game would be unplayable if it was ported to the Switch. The magic from Panic Button is not suitable for every game, this one included. Atleast they brought a version of FF15 to the Switch, which is better than nothing.
@justin233 I guess a lot of people did. People who thought a simple downgrade would do the trick.
@justin233 it makes Final Fantasy XIII bearable.
Ok I'm glad I didn't give up and paid for the iOS version.
Time to delete that one!
Never played XV since I don't have a PS4. FF has been garbage beyond FF9 and I've long since buried and made my piece with the beloved series that got me into gaming.
I laughed when I first saw the trailer for this Derp Edition but maybe I'll pick it up for old times sake. They all look literally adorable but maybe it will be a good game.
@pika677 This here, what you're doing, is called a straw man. It's fine, if your only goal is to troll. But not if you want to make an actual point.
A lot of us openly admit to using the switch in portable mode, both in and out of the house. We don't have a problem with that. In fact, it's a huge draw for people who love games but don't love being tethered in front of their tv, for whatever reason.
What we don't like is "mobile games" which is code for phone games. Why? Because they're usually extremely simple, shallow, and often built around predatory microtransactions. Not all of them are necessarily bad, but they're not what we want on the Switch. If we wanted that, we'd just stick with our phones or tablets, and not bother with the 300 dollar gaming machine, with actual buttons and joysticks.
No thanks, I’m not gonna butcher my good memories of this game with a port that shouldn’t exist. I’d rather have the game be heavily downgraded than play the mobile port of it on the Switch.
It’s honestly such a slap in the face to Switch owners.
This is pathetic
Erm...this release (across all platforms) doesn't discount the possibility of the full fat version releasing on Switch in some form.
Seems we have some Switch snobs lol. Aww bless.
@Nincompoop
I’m thinking the same thing. Wii U at least had an identity. Switch gets this and fallout shelter lol
I don't mind a dumbed down art style, but at least make an effort. For example, Windwaker has simplified art style, but looked absolutely gorgeous. This looks like ass
It’s tough being a Nintendo fan at times.
meh
Oh, negativity in the comments field... who would have thought?
And I can tell AteS*itMan is at it again. Poor guy...
It looks actually nicer than I thought it would be.
But seriously.....they couldn't even animate the mouths, so you have a sense who is actually talking in the dialogs. That really is a turn off!
It's 2018 for crying out loud....not the 1980's.
@pika677
What?!
@Jeronan I know! That's the one thing putting me off!
@Mgene15 @Nincompoop
What?! Dignity? It's identity was it had no games. That's not dignity.
There are some bizarre posts on this thread.
@Heavyarms55 your post pretty much summed up what I was gonna say perfectly.
I’d have settled for the real thing with this cartoon style. Not interested in mobile games in the slightest however.
@FarkyValentine why would you want a remake of the worst final fantasy game..
This is kind of cool. In my opinion, FFXV was one of the worst FF's I've played. This mobile version, while not as good graphically as the normal version looks more like a traditional FF game, which is something I like.
Now if this was the Secret of Mana remake being announced for Switch then I would be jumping for joy.
Ah, poop!
I could buy the full game on PS4 for £15 from Amazon right now...
Couldn't they have at least made the mouths move??
BTW it looks like a lego game with FF theme. Right?
While I do honestly think this looks more charming than the original visuals, it has rather much 'Funko Pop!' going on for the main cast, and rather little anything going on for the simplified enemies.
And while I think I might appreciate an abridged version of the story, does anyone know how much of it is actually in here? How much has the battle system been reduced?
And the real question: How is it any more HD than what the phone versions offer? All phone screens are 720p, 1080p, or more now.
Ok,
This is very disappointing. Then just not give us FFXV at all. Would rather have a original game.
I could defend developers when it came to the Wii U especially with the obligated gamepad but the Switch is a capable machine.
FF12 remake wouldv been better or even FF13 games. i really feel dissed by Square Enix, not just as a Switch owner but as a gamer in general now prefering Nintendo.
@Dezzy That's basically SE in a nutshell. They even ported the mobile tripe of the originals to PC.
It's not even like it was a good version. Best one of all the remakes was the GBA/DS versions in terms of relative difficulty (each successive re-release has gotten easier and easier) and style.
@EightBitMan that's so cliché
That's nice, except the video is PS4 footage. What it looks like on the switch is anyone's guess
I had downloaded this on the iPad but never started it and I'm glad I didn't!
Im really ok with this. I’ll just play the actual Final Fantasy XV on PS4. This will be a fun compliment to play on Switch!!!
Final Fantasy sold out to Sony years ago, for me they can stay there!
Well, that's one offer to last interested people through until the considered full version, and Square Enix really sees it as a separate experience if they're releasing it on PS4 and XBO alongside it, but... as the Great Conch says in the Spongebob meme about Steam sales, "maybe someday". The game's most touted link to the original is keeping the main plot intact, so diving in now would be nothing but a concentrated spoiler meal. I still have one single player flagship to binge up prior, its DS sequel to finish (yeah, I actually played a good chunk of it way back when, although it doesn't seem to have spoiled me much more FFRK routinely does), another flagship with its sequels to replay - and the least I'll have afterwards is a remote play option. It doesn't makes much sense for me to go for FFXV's self-admitted story digest so far in advance now.
I prefer the look of this to the more realistic style of the original. I'll happily grab this.
@Sanangelo89
"Would rather have a original game."
We kind of did get that as well though, with Octopath Traveler.
But I know what you mean.
It's just that it's been twelve years now since the announcement of a numbered Final Fantasy game intended directly for a single-player audience.
XV is a retooling of XIII versus, which was originally announced alongside the standard XIII back in 2006. They got a lot of investment they still need to recouperate, it seems.
Lol why are people freaking out about this?
It is also releasing on other consoles and square enix already showed us that they are willing to support the switch. I mean they have their one division for making switch games now. Some people somehow think having more games is somehow worse than having none at all.
i played this like half hour on my mobile. It was kinda fun but took too much space and wasn't good for the battery. Still Square Enix bring at least Final Fantasy XIII to Switch. This is kinda disrespectful.
Edit: Ok XV is a very heavy game. But the remake of Final Fantasy VII is running on unreal engine which is compatible and works very well on Switch. So slice the antialiasing and shadows and make it happen Square
Man, such negativity just because it's a mobile port. Unlike many people seem to think, there can be good mobile games. I'm not sure if FF XV Pocket Edition is one of them, but it doesn't look bad.
Honestly, if people like games like I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear with similar styles, why can't they at least give this a benefit of doubt?
These graphics are yuck. It might be a good game though. I will wait for a review.
@FarkyValentine Ok, see if that happens, at this rate, we'd get something like, "Final Fantasy VII ReMix Disaster," and it would be the new remaster, toned down, and presented in PS one nostalgia disaster vision.
I'd rather eat a pillow made from chocobo feathers.
Not that this isn't some sort of cool. I definitely dig it, but it does feel like an incredible tone shift from the original, and lazy, in terms of effort put forth by Square Enix.
This very much so reminds me of the DS remakes of the old FF games, 3, 4, etc? Maybe that was it?
Either way, they still did have engaging stories that you could genuinely take seriously. They weren't bad because they weren't realistic in tone. However, those were upgrades from the previous releases, and...
I dunno, I saw the opening of XV and like... That game reeked of emotion. The way the light would shine could almost tell a friggin' story and invoke thought and emotion. This... does not look like it's gonna command that outta you.
Not to mention in the DS games, at least their mouths moved. I know it's kinda like, "big whoop," but it's also kinda like... Why not? How much more effort would a few lip flap textures be to... ugh.
Ok someone reacted on my comment, i accidentally pressed on report when i wanted to react on his comment.
now i cant find his nor my comment. Im sorry.
After playing the full version on PC is hard to justify buying this. Hard pass.
Still hoping they will localize Seiken Densetsu Collection...
Congratulations! We get the worst version of the worst FF game ever!
Yeeeaaahhh...No thanks.
I completed FFXV on the PS4 and thought it was a great game but I did miss the old school final fantasy graphics. Realism is impressive but there's something more magical about the way they used to look. I'm happy to play through it again with this art style.
BUT WHYYY IT'S A FREAKING MOBILE GAME
i'll still get it, i got the day one edition on the PS4, the Royal Edition on the XBOX ONE so i might as well finish the collection
plus this version will be perfect for my nephew to play when i'm babysitting
What a delightfully odd looking game. To be honest, I'm a little more interested in this than I am in the full-fat FFXV. Hopefully it's not a mess of microtransactions - I always get a bit nervous when I hear that a game originated as free-to-play, since adapting that to a standard pricing model usually comes with some game balance quirks. Still, I remain optimistic.
@JHDK if they announced a port of the enhanced version of FFIX off mobiles I’d jump for joy. Ditto with VII.
There really isn’t a reason Squaresoft haven’t ported all the updates FF games to the Switch yet TBH.
You're killing me, square.
FFxii remaster. THAT'S a game worth bringing over.
@singingbrakeman
Its about 1/5 the length of the original game.
@aznable It might be weird, but shorter playtimes tend to be a perk for me at this point. I'm currently playing DQXI and loving it, but its lengthy narrative was definitely something that made me leery of picking it up.
I played the first bit of this on my phone when it came out and I actually liked it more than the full FFXV... Visuals aside. Just thought combat worked better. Hopefully it does well enough to have SE support the system more with their RPGs
@jtmnm tbh I'd have to completely disagree, it's actually what drew me in to play the original
@Pod octopath traveler is a new game, i agree.
But it doesnt utilize the power of the Switch. i dont expect XB1X graphics or even base PS4 but lets all be honest, SQ-E just pooped this game on the Switch for a quick cashgrab.
There is no passion behind it like with Doom or even Octopath Traveler.
I kinda like the look of this, if they'd thrown the original cutscenes in as fmv's I think it would have been better, then it would have just looked like one of the early 3d final fantasy games.
Will concur with others though, in that, i'd also like to see them port 7-9 over to the console. They're on steam can we just get them now?
interested! confused if this a free-to-start game and still is or was a free-to-start and its now a paid title?
@MarioFan02 BUT DOOM & WOLFENSTEIN!!11
Switch fans in denial once again grasping on to a false narrative.
The whole thing with those games is that the engine was already there and enabled the ports. It was basically changing the config (lower res, textures etc) and changing some parts of the levels that ran slowly. That is something totally different than writing a new engine from scratch.
@TripleX Just to elaborate on what others have said, it costs about the same on mobile. The first chapter is free and then you can either pay for each subsequent chapter as you get to it or buy them all in one go.
Sigh...
Pocket Edition for a console that don't (with Joy Cons attached) even fit into your pocket.
L...O...L!
This doesn't excite me. At least we got one interesting game announcement with Civ6.
I've been waiting for this one and it's not surprising at all that the Square of today will port mobile games over to every console to make money. This should shut down the whole ports cost loads of money and that's why they don't happen as I'm sure this isn't going to make that much money.
Considering I'm allergic to the androgynous style of Tetsuya Nomura's characters in general, seeing them like this here to tell the exact same story with the same game mechanics, I think this may well be my best way to finally experience this anyway. I just hope this gets a physical release but if it fits on mobile, then it can't be too large a game that it couldn't fit on a cartridge so there's hope methinks.
EDIT: Having now watched the trailer, this looks sooooo much like Final Fantasy The 4 Heroes of Light, in the art department!
Well, I'm not surprised this version is coming, but I don't know if its primarily because of the Switch's current hardware. From thinking about it, FFXV doesn't have many quick gameplay elements that many Switch games seem to have in them.
For example, you could probably squeeze in time with Octopath Traveler in a 30 minute break, bus ride or between classes, same with Mario Odyssey, Zelda BoTW and lots of others I'm missing. The Switch's audience is the person who can game when they can, too. It makes sense they'd put this version out first.
Personally, bring on the old Final Fantasy games! Give us I-VI, VII-IX, X, XII and XIII. I'd play VII and VIII all day over XV. Hell, I hope the rumor that Persona 4 Golden may come to the Switch is true. FF XV is an amazing game, but it's not something I'd play on my Switch.
I'm sure the full experience will come to the Switch at some point, but the Pocket Edition makes sense for now. They're not going to stop milking this version.
I really don't like Square's "games as a service" treatment they've given FFXV. I definitely feel just the game was needed at the least the initial DLC was all content that should have been in game, they purposely set it up to make people want to buy the DLC to see the parts of the story that got purposely cut out. And this version of the game just looks like dumpster fire. I enjoyed FFXV for what it was, but I definitely feel this was not needed. Also I don't think many switch owners would rather have this replacement to the actual game albeit they probably were not going to get it running properly on switch anyways.
If I ever become interested in this game, I'll just play it on PS4.
I'll try a demo. My phone isn't compatible with it apparently.
It's amazing how most of the comments ignore that this is coming out on the other consoles as well. Just like when Fallout Shelter was released.
@Sanangelo89
Oh yeah, that's my view entirely as well. This edition is made on a budget, to claw them in some more of the money they think they ought to have made on XIII and XV.
Which also means that they couldn't REALLY just have made a new game instead. This is a port of a cashgrab. That's the kind of money they felt like spending. The alternative is no game at all. Or ports of Theathrythm maybe... which I'd also rather have. :-/
Yeah, why even bother making proper games anymore when it's become acceptable to port mobile games?
So many negative views. I enjoyed it more than the regular game at times, and now it’s portable and not stuck on a crap mobile device.
This is why more and more I'm pulling away from online fan sites. The idiocy and immaturity has reached epic levels.
This is fantastic. Switch is a portable system. Not all games will be able to run. This version of the game is still the full game, and it's a way to get FFXV on Switch for people to enjoy. But people care more about console war bullet points than they actually care about fun video games. They don't want a fun game, they want a fun game they can brag about to PS4 and X1 owners to stroke their own juvenile egos. And being "a mobile port" damages those egos, hence the outrage. Ya, it's a mobile port, AND??? The mobile port was of one of the biggest AAA console games of the last decade. It's not like this is Candy Crush, this is Final Fantasy XV. Being on mobile should be 100% irrelevant, unless you're a fanboy looking to attack it or an insecure fan looking for console war ammo.
It's a portable system people. Be thankful you're getting this game at all. If that's not good enough for you then don't buy it, but I'm about fed up to here with people COMPLAINING ABOUT NEW GAME ANNOUNCEMENTS.
Maybe if this does well, we can see FFX and FFXII. This is the first main FF game on Nintendo since like... the SNES. Progress, right
Is anyone else hoping for FF online instead?
@JaxonH i understand what you say, still i feel they played us in a way.
Why not announce immidiately that this game would come. Instead they gave some vague prediction of 'some' FFXV game coming.
Ofcourse people will hope for the main game to come, especially knowing and seeing that the Switch is quit a capable console.
NBA2K19 is another game prooving that the Switch can be seen as a full worthy homeconsole. Its again not the best looking one butoit still looks very good.
FFXV might still come and its not really about that (it might never come) but they could be more clear about pocket edition coming and not act like that one is the main dish while its not.
@Tulio517 They're withholding the Switch version until FFXV is finished being developed.
@JaxonH Honestly this version looks more like an FF game should feel than the "real" version. And at least this one has no DLC That said it's not really the full game (then again, is the full game the full game? They still haven't sold all of it to us yet...) it's the "abridged" version, or kind of a Cliff Notes speedrun through FFXV. Personally I feel like it's a game more for big FFXV fans that want to play it another way than as a way for people to play it from the start.
Plus XV is an ARPG, and a pretty huge turn for FF. For Switch I'd almost rather have seen a rerelease of XIII/XIII-2/XIII Lightening Returns. Much as I lambast the FNC series. Plus there's really no other modern console you can buy it for. PS3 support is legacy, there's no PS4 remake, You can play XIII-2 and XIII-LR via BC and buy it digitally on X1, but the base XIII isn't available digitally (I believe it's not BC supported.) So it would be a new branch of FF for the Switch crowd and the hardware can easily handle it without trying to fit the overambitious XV on there. And the mobile abridgement is interesting but it doesn't really fill the hole.
@NEStalgia
Ya I'd be down for 10, 12 or 13.
I don't like the chibi style in this game for the faces, but that aside it looks incredible. I played the original release, so I do have frame of reference.
This is amazing, and the combat looks to be much better without the janky camera of the original release.
@shani Well, it's a console port of a mobile game that itself was an...I don't know...."L(ow)D(efinition) Remaster" of a proper console game. So you need the proper game to abridge it to an LD mobile remaster to then resell it on consoles.
@JaxonH 10's fully Sony locked IIRC, forever and ever. But we have the HD remaster of that for PS4 (and Vita!) so we're covered on that one for the time being. 12 would need a pretty big graphics overhaul I think to port. It's patently ugly even on a native PS2 at this point, and I doubt 12 is an important enough entry for them enough to do it...it's the lonely, forgotten FF. It's also probably Sony locked, so there's that. But XIII trilogy is already multiplat, pretty enough, would look and play just right on Switch, and is currently unavailable enough that it might pay. It was a horrible FF game, but the sequels are better, and the ATB fits the switch audience (and screen) better than SpiderNoctis would
Hated first minute then loved second minute. However given the high cost will see how much content before making final judgement.
@NEStalgia Haha ok, I actually didn't know that!
I assumed the Pocket Edition was its own thing, but now that you mention it, the numbering should've given me a hint that it's a remaster of FFXV. ^^
Makes me wonder why they didn't port FFXV directly then... but I guess it was easier this way or something.
I think half the news articles which have been announced today where all part of the Nintendo direct. Which is a shame as there's probably nothing to look forward too when it gets aired next week.
@GraveLordXD
Don't feed the troll, bruh
@shani I can understand them not porting XV...it's a pretty heavy graphics focused game, and it's an action-RPG instead of a turn based RPG...emphasis on the action, more like ReCore than like FF in a lot of ways. The part I don't understand is why on earth they're bringing "Pocket Edition" to PC/PS4/XBox1 when they already have the full game there? I can't imagine anyone saying "you know I really wanted to play FF but instead of the photo-realistic gravity grapple action game with the full story, I'll just grab this cut down abridged version with PS1 graphics and chibi characters instead for almost the same price!"
Well, ok, @Anti-matter might But not on PS4 or X1
So square enix gives us Octopath and it really is a beautifully made game...then this comes. Plus it's comes at a later date. I mean this should have been easier to port to the switch since it has the same mobile architecture. I rather them not give us this game and develop something that is unique to the platform and not just a money grabbing port.
@JaxonH
Great Post. Its been a surprising revelation finding out that such a large portion of the Nintendo fanbase will never be happy and seemingly don't want to be.
We constantly see games get announced but users won't buy them because they aren't the right game or they have the wrong release date, or don't have a physical release, or have one but with a mandatory download, or aren't as cheap as on other formats etc.etc.
There are so many who want to see Conspiracy theories around every corner E.g.on this page you've got someone saying they think Nintendo fans have been played even though it's day and date with other formats, or someone who thinks because FF7 Remake runs on Unreal Engine 4 FFXV will run on Switch and, IDK, S-E are holding the full version back out of spite.
It's like some users are scared of Nintendo being successful. They're happier with poor support so they can feel victimised. I honestly think they were happier during the Wii U failure days.
@N8tiveT3ch
Except those two things don't take the same amount of time and effort and money as each other. Be realistic. Not a fair comparison.
While at first I thought the Pocket Edition would be yet another case of Square Enix giving us the breadcrumbs left over from the main treat they keep exclusive to other consoles (mostly Sony), now that it's actually confirmed this sounds better than I thought, because:
1) it's the first mainline numbered Final Fantasy game to see the lights of day on a Nintendo console outside the first six and their remakes;
2) it's the first mainline numbered Final Fantasy game to be on a Nintendo home console in years;
3) the super deformed art style is strikingly similar to the acclaimed Bravely Default / Final Fantasy IV DS styles;
4) it's supposed to be the actual same game as its more realistic counterpart;
5) it's an action RPG with Kingdom Hearts-like(-ish) controls and gameplay on a Nintendo home console, and scored by Yoko Shimomura to boot.
So yeah, five silver linings such as these are not to be underestimated. A proper Final Fantasy game on a Nintendo console, bringing us up to speed with the mainline entries in a heartbeat: the shadow of the Nintendo-Square breakup that happened in the Yamauchi era seems to have been extinguished in favor of a new light of hope.
Not to mention this whole package comes cheaper!
@AlexSora89 It's not quite the full game as the non-deformed version. DQXI's SNES style on 3DS is the same game as the shiny PS4 version, but this version of FFXV is cut down a bit. Same story and locations, but different shortened path. The gameplay is also quite different. Full FFXV is kind of like KH DDD a little with the Flowmotion thing, but this one is more of a Diablo-style point and click ARPG.
It's not a bad thing though, it's a different version with a different gameplay system for the same actual "chapter" in FF lore.
@PLATINUM7 Holy crap, are you my long lost twin??
I was gonna post the same comment. And I always run with seven.
@Sanangelo89 in reply to "Why not announce immidiately that this game would come. Instead they gave some vague prediction of 'some' FFXV game coming."
They did say they were experimenting with what would run on Switch or not. They weren't sure at the time what would be the best course of action, figuring out how "portable" your game will be to a console based on a completely different chipset without running some experiments and see what can be scaled back to make it happen on less powerful hardware, and whether or not it is worth trying to git a much larger game on it.
Let's be realistic, if the full fat version was to come on switch, you can already kiss a physical release goodbye because the full fat game, even scaled down to best take advantage of the Switch, would be well over 16GB and even if it would fit on a 32GB cartridge, they may not be willing to take the risk of selling a watered down version of one of their flagship titles for a way higher price than when it launched on other platforms where it is probably already discounted by now, anyway.
Plus, you have to take in account that this is running on a proprietary engine that no one else has tried porting to the system before, an engine that was developed before the Switch was even a thing, and for radically different machines. Porting it to the Switch may not be as easy or even feasible as it has proven to be for other games such as the Id Engine in the case of Doom and Wolfenstein for example. They repeatedly said they were trying to do so, but for all we know they may well have just evaluated the situation and come to the conclusion that it would not work at all or not well enough that people would actually buy into whatever the end result would have been, had they brought over the full fat version to Switch... not to mention that this would have taken way longer to do so as well.
Current gen ports to Switch have generally been linear types of games and I'm pretty sure no open world current gen game has been ported to the Switch yet, correct me if I'm wrong. These games require something that games like Doom or Wolfenstein don't require nearly as much: memory bandwidth, which I've said it countless times here and elsewhere, is the biggest bottleneck on the Switch and unfortunately for everyone, something Nintendo couldn't have done any better since they went with the best mobile RAM available at that point when the Switch launched. It is an unfortunate consequence of the Switch being a portable system at core, which means it has to be able to run a decent amount of time away from a power source.
In the end, I think everything is pointing to the reason for Switch getting the mobile version is simply that this was the best fit for it. I won't complain personally, as I don't mind the art style at all and this will be my first time playing the game on my Switch, period.
@NEStalgia in reply to : "The gameplay is also quite different. Full FFXV is kind of like KH DDD a little with the Flowmotion thing, but this one is more of a Diablo-style point and click ARPG."
Good to know. I've tried and tried again getting into KH and I simply can't stand the gameplay (my copy of DDD got like half an hour of use and went back into its box where it remains to this day), whereas the Diablo style suits me much better. So that's nothing but good news for me ^_^, though I expect that they will drop the point n' click aspect for docked play (or for the other home console versions thereof for that matter) in favour of a more hands on/direct control of the character.
Lol, no.
@RudyC3 yeah, i mean it's not quite kh, but the warp moves remind me of ddd flowmotion more than any other comparison i could try. Although unlike kh, you can play it in a quasi turn based mode where it pauses after an action... In that sense you could call it an action based 3d baldurs gate? It's definitely more action than rpg as far as battles go, but at least pauses can make it a little more rpg like.
But for pocket hd, yeah, i imagine it's tank controls like Titan quest and Diablo 3 which should work. It's cool that it's a different gameplay system. Id be more likely to play this after I'm done xv full than grinding through the full thing twice!
I actually prefer this art style then the hyper realistic approach of the original. IMO it fits better with the original FF games, and isn't as jarring when you have characters with incredible hair rendering technology yet things popup out of nowhere.
My only concern is how much of the game story and events is cut from this version. But it's definitely on my radar now.
This feels very humbling.
@N8tiveT3ch if you was never gonna buy the game why do you care if it dropped at the same time as other console releases. You was never gonna buy it so it shouldn't bother you one bit.
@TripleX the free part is the first chapter only. I reckon for this price u get the full game
I think I'll check this out, it looks a little weird, the characters seem less animated than the ones in the DS remake of 3. Still part of me wants to buy it just to encourage Square to stop ignoring Nintendo. I'm really hoping after Octopath they come out with more games like it, specifically turn based ones, where you actually manage your party. None of this, you have your other party members auto attack and shout stuff crap.
No thanks! 😀 I don't play squares games and I hate FF ... This looks awful
This is why I have been staying away from Nintendo Life, you people are way too negative and whinny.
Don't know how people let gaming effect them in such a negative way.
I heard good things about FFXV. I'm fine with the chibi-coat of paint as long as the whole game content and story is there.
Guess I'd rather have the full fat version but intend to get a PS4 anyway. This version just looks so wrong.
@Spoony_Tech Fallout shelter was released for free, Square is charging 30 bucks for this and this is the version of FFXV that Switch users are stuck with
@HaroGenkide this was not a free game on mobile. Only the first chapter was available for free. This is a full story based game without micro transactions, while fallout shelter is a full-on traditional pay to win mobile game.
It was cheaper than this version though. I dunno if it has any other differences besides being in “HD” to justify the prince increase.
I'd get it if I had a Switch. Even if the full version was available. Sure, they could've put a little more effort into the graphics, but I like that this version gives streamlines things and should run very smoothly.
I think I would like the art style better if it was more committed to chibi, like Final Fantasy Four Heroes of Light or Bravely Default.
This is an awkward compromise.
Please no, I like my eyesight, thank you.
Not at all interested.
I'm much more interested in more Octopath, a solid follow-up to that would be much more welcome.
Edit: There are so many FF games on every single device from high end PC's to low spec phones, this game seems so pointless.
So does that mean we wont get a physical version?
@PanurgeJr I agree. FF after 10 just hasn't been the same, so I'll just play Octopath and wait for the next Bravely game. Not supporting this crap
@Tim_Vreeland I agree with your comment. This is not how I would want to experience the game. I'll take an average port any day.
@dash257 oh man, I love Actraiser. Great combination of side scroller and civilization sim.
On topic: good on Square for at least giving us this. But a port of probably one of the most incomplete and lackluster FF is a hard pass for me.
Crap.
@Dpullam oh yea bravely default... Square said they were not done with the series. With that and Octopath 2, if they are both going to be Nintendo exclusives... Nintendo could never get an FF game and we'd be better off for it.
@jobvd Did you just say the mobile version looks better than the actual FFXV!?
Have you even played FFXV!? That game is freaking gorgeous!
@BlueBlur101 It may look good to you but it's a disgrace to what FF once was.
I thought it was average in terms of gameplay. It makes me nervous for FFVII Remake, especially with the state it's in right now.
But you can't deny the visuals are among the best in current gen!
@NEStalgia
If the core experience is still there, then technicalities will hardly matter. A fun game with the same story will still be Final Fantasy XV in my book, especially with the possibility of me moving to southern Italy always lingering around. The more games Switch gets, the better things will be when Switch eventually becomes my main console.
@JaxonH - My dear friend, I have NEVER agreed with the sentiments of ANY post on a Nintendo forum so much as I do yours!! For countless weeks I have expected to hear of Switch owners "dancing in the streets" at the endless list of wonderful games either released, or slated for a near-future release!! Of course I was dreaming!! We've seen nothing but whinge, moan, and whine from supposed Switch "fans"!! Well, personally, I believe the original FFXV was nothing more than a very pretty picture purporting to warrant comparison with the Greats of FF history. It didn't!! I tried desperately hard to "get" the PS4 version, but after weeks of effort I confess, I gave up! BUT NOW, I can play it in just the way I want to - and whether I finish it or not is irrelevant!! - because I guarantee I'll LOVE IT!!
