While there were plenty of new games announced during the 2018 Nindies Summer Showcase, towards the end of the 16-minute video was a showreel locking in several dates for a number of previously revealed eShop titles.
Undertale by developer 8-4 was briefly shown, with the confirmation of an 18th September release date for both North America and Europe. The game is also now up for preorder on the eShop. Earlier this month, a listing on Amazon cited the Japanese release for September as well. The cult RPG was originally unveiled for the Switch earlier this year during a Direct in March.
Will you be downloading Undertale next month when it arrives on the eShop? Tell us in the comments.

Whoah! A day before my birthday!
Never purchased a non action rpg before. I've never been into that genre. This may be my first..
This game was explosively popular. Then I completely stopped hearing about it. What happened?
Maybe when it goes on sale.
Wont pay more than $20 for it.
Yo, pick up this game. It's great.
@GeeEmm
You're set then. It'll be 15.
Yup, 14.99 as confirmed by Nindies Showcase.
My body is ready to have a bad time.
So ''Eventually'' translates to ''18th of September''. Got it! Also much sooner than I thought.
@geox30
Thought it was $22.95 when I checked the store this morning.
If its $15 then ill probably pick it up.
Just checked, it is $22.95 on the Aus Eshop.
Pass for the time being.
I have it on Steam, where it is likely to be MUCH cheaper, but it's a very enjoyable title.
@nintendobynature Well, Undertale is part RPG part bullet hell, so technically it is action.
@amiiboacid whatever it is, it looks very interesting and I hear good things. At 15$ bucks I might as well give it a try.
@Heavyarms55 It's only about 4 hours in length and hasn't received any updates since launch. Eventually, people move on? Not that I have personally lol. Plus, there were certain parts of the fandom that were toxic, and then people were getting roasted for liking it because it was so popular therefore people who hadn't played it started hating it because they heard about it so often... y'know the normal cycle for when things get popular.
All that said, doesn't change the fact that the game itself is incredibly heartfelt, surprising, and leaves a lasting impression. Also acts as a very beginner's introduction to the bullet hell genre (only the optional fights are worthy of that title). Definitely worth a play if you haven't yet.
@link3710 Wow. Thanks for a very clear and easy to understand answer. Couldn't have asked for more.
@ReaderRagfish My thoughts exactly. It doesn't look interesting to me at all. Dont really get the appeal but happy for those who like it! I'll be playing Hyper Light Drifter anyway!
I haven't bought or played this game yet and Megalovania is actually blaring in my head; someone please help me.
@ReaderRagfish You play Earthbound? Not only is Undertale inspired by it, the feeling is pretty similar there too. Most people tend to applaud the story and its quirkiness over its gameplay. This is because at first the gameplay is a bit archaic. Over time however, the gameplay grows on you. The fanbase at first did not realize how good the game was until years later.
Now, take all of that (except the years later part) and you have a great description of Undertale. The gameplay is good, but people believe the selling point is the story. More so the dialogue.
And, I'm sure you have your reasons, but judging based off a fanbase is a bit cruel. I enjoy some of the Sonic games but because the fanbase is "toxic", people immediately scoff.
All this is coming from a guy who has never played it. Even my non-gamer friends were able to get into it so I hope you could think about it.
Never played this before. I'll be picking this one up.
For you big, bad ballers, you can get the Undertale Collectors Edition on the Fangamer website. I got it for Vita and it is one of the PIMPEST special editions You can buy. Don’t believe me? Check it out then!
I played this on PS4 and beat it, got the platnium trophy and I dont understand why this game is so popular. It just didn't do it for me. I wanted to love it but.....eh.
@Heavyarms55 It’s one of those super highly rated indie games that kinda fades away on its own. The fanbase and media blew it out of proportions (had like a 99 on metacritic after being released) and then suddenly just fell behind. I started playing it after launch because a friend gifted it to me, I thoroughly enjoyed it but after an hour or so I felt no desire to go back and finish. Maybe I should go about that now hah.
They glossed over this so quickly in the direct that I missed it. I would have thought they'd have given it more attention considering how popular it is.
That's three days after the game's third birthday. Might buy it again. Still need to do a specialized neutral run.
Give me a physical or collectors edition
@Giygas_95 Nintendo was interested in getting Undertale to the Wii U pretty soon after it became popular, but the dev (Toby Fox) responded to them that he’d love to but that the game was made in Game Maker Studio which doesn’t work on Wii U.
I vaguely recall the announcement for Undertale on Switch came just after Game Maker Studio announced Switch compatibility, hence why it was a soft-announcement that didn’t promise too much for a port that was yet to be made, because the tech wasn’t there yet.
This is an incredible indie game. Especially if you experience all the routes. Most of the best boss battles and an incredible deconstruction of typical JRPG progression mechanics are hidden behind the Genocide Route .
First indie game I haven't bought on pc but will definitely try in on switch
I kinda liked it the first playthrough, I absolutely loved it the second. This game has pretty amazing replay value. This game isn't just to be praised for story or gameplay. There's more to it than that. The music for example exceeded my expectations. The game also let's the player make significant choices. I call the story okay... rather it's the characters that make undertale so compelling. That's how I view Undertale.
@GeeEmm Create a united states account and buy it in the states if you don't want to pay the Aussie price. It's completely legal since the Switch is region free (they just have local economies for people who don't know how to get around things and they are too honest)
@ReaderRagfish @invictus4000
"Based on past disappointments" is a bad reason to hate on a game. Past disappointments just means you joined a hype train and it failed to deliver. This game is tried and true. Here's my reply to your two reasons to not buy it:
1 (you). Games that are almost exclusively praised for story/emotional impact rather than gameplay (excluding visual novels)
1(me). This game actually has a pretty great bullethell battle system which makes the final bosses on the "genocide route" very difficult if you have no bullethell skill. Also the twists that Toby Fox did on the jrpg traditional tropes is really worth checking out. Especially the way it feels like choices matter (something not even Mass Effect could pull off)
2(you). Indie games that come out of nowhere and immediately get a rabid cult fanbase.
2(me). Of course when AAA games come out of nowhere and immediately get a rabid cult fanbase (like Borderlands, Fortnite, Assassin's Creed, and Overwatch to name a few) you don't bat an eye??? Also, hating something that's popular doesn't make you an interesting person so stop being so silly with your rules and just play a cool game. It's cheap and it's fun. I'm sure you wasted $15 on something worse, like that phone case you never use any more or that hat you bought to look cool but you realized you hate wearing hats. So get off your morality high horse and just try it!
I tagged the 4000 person because they agreed with you.
@Eef Fangamer is the only way to get an affordable collector's edition. It's the official site according to Toby Fox and sold anywhere else will have a markup. Get it!
@oats-81 You played it for the trophy, that's why.
Jrpg titles have always been about the characters. You want a game that has a lot of mechanics and a lot of "feeling powerful" moments then play an american rpg. You have to be interested in the literature side of things to appreciate it.
@Slaz Still, since it's definitely coming now I just wonder why they didn't give it more attention yesterday. Just something I found odd.
@ReaderRagfish I don't agree with that mindset, but I guess I can understand. Me personally, I would never separate the triple A market and the indie market. They are together part of the greater gaming sphere. I will admit, without Triple A, indies don't exist and the same does not apply vice versa. But many of the games I have enjoyed on Switch have been, well, indie games.
As I say that, hype is 100% different between the two. The only way for indie games to get exposure is pretty much word of mouth. That's a problem in of itself as the "hype" is usually a very VERY local minority who enjoys this type of game. Which may not be everyone.
If I may, the way you are looking at it is not flawed, but I think holding triple A to a different standard is not the greatest of ideas. If you give Undertale a shot matters nothing to me, but I hope you won't skip over a potential gem for you simply because the indie market works differently. Have a good day (or night, you know, timezones).
@ReaderRagfish Sounds like to me you're on a tight budget of time and you only play games that meet a certain level of "polish" because you don't have a lot of time to play games. Either that or you only like one type of genre (FPS or ARPG) and because of that you don't branch out. Alright though, not everyone has to buy things outside of their skillset and enjoy it, your reasons just seemed silly to me that's all
$9.99 on Steam. Why the markup? Are there some Switch-exclusive features?
@BubbleMatrix82 I tried it. Didn't like it. Doesn't mean it's not a good game, just not for me.
@Dr_Corndog Switch tax.
@Dr_Corndog Steam is always going to be cheaper for indies because that’s where they cane out first. There’s a lot lot of people who will buy this so long as the price isn’t insane. The price will probably come down after X amount of time just like most games. They’d be leaving money on the table if they released a really well liked game at a sale price to start off. That’s not how you ensure your favourite games get sequels.
Got it on the VITA. One of the most meh games I've ever played.
In my view it is a very overrated game
@DavidMac Was it $15 on Steam originally? It might make a bit more sense then. Even so, there's a difference between a sale price and a price that's depreciated over time. I don't expect Undertale to go on sale on Switch for a long time, even though it's frequently 50% off on Steam.
