Nintendo has revealed a bunch of new Assist Trophies for the forthcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch, which is due to launch later this year.
The big news here is that Rathalos from the Monster Hunter series will be joining the game not only as an Assist Trophy but as a boss character as well - a first for the Smash Bros. franchise.
Elsewhere, Shovel Knight, Zero from the Mega Man X, Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Krystal from Star Fox Adventures and the evil Moon from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask all join the Assist Trophy roster.
This is all in addition to the news that Simon and Richter Belmont are playable characters, alongside Chrom, Dark Samus and King K.Rool. All in all, not a bad day for Smash fans.

Excited to see Monster Hunter on here! Would be a funny character is the cat people for Smash haha.
I wonder if other indie characters will be assist trophies?
Really cool!!
Anyone else find it slightly weird that Monster Hunter has an assist trophy but no playable character? I thought for sure we were going to see that come up after Rathalos flew onto the stage....and is that a Monster Hunter Stage?
Well, there goes my dream of being able to play as Zero in Smash Bros.
THAT MOON, THO! o/
@MarioLover92 when I saw him I gasped for a second as I thought he was gonna be playable
@dkxcalibur I was also a bit disappointed there was no hunter announcement. Maybe a Mii outfit again at the very least lol
That Monster Hunter stage looked a little less like a fighting stage....and more like a flat out boss fight...
@MarioLover92 I feel your pain.
Rathalos showing up is so freaking awesome.
Rathalos is in Smash!
What a year for Monster Hunter. Got MH World, MH Generations Ultimate, MH in Marvel vs Capcom and Rathalos in Smash Bros.
I can't wait for the next stop of the train on August 28th, with Gen Ultimate.
The moon is Savage!
I never played Smash 4 so can someone explain to me what these assist trophies are please? They seem to be some sort of half way house between an item and a fighter. Movement in the trailer looked very natural so do you control them or is it pure AI? If you control them what happens to your fighter in the meantime?
@Arpie No, you don’t control them. But many chase other players. They are items, but in a “fire and forget” way. Make sense?
@EightBitMan that has nothing to do with Nintendo and more of Capcom. I and many others would rather have a new Monster Hunter built from the ground up for the switch than a half-baked port of World.
@Arpie They’re basically Pokéballs that release characters from a whole bunch of different series.
@HobbitGamer and @thesilverbrick thanks both for clearing that up for me makes sense now. They look pretty cool so I'm looking forward to trying them out.
@Lthoise Like I said on another article. The only thing he's here for is to take a dump on everything. He's being petty to the extreme and will probably demonize anyone who disagrees with him as being an apologist or even sycophantic.
Dunning–Kruger is in full effect here.
#BeedleAssistTrophy
Seems like the missing character in the castlevania stage with question marks is in fact kid Dracula from the game boy classic. Nintendo are really pulling it all out
I am so mindblown right now. What a day!
Shame Ashley is an assist trophy, but this is pretty cool nonetheless!
Very happy to see Shovel Knight as an Assist Trophy, absolutely deserves to have some recognition in Smash. Actually really proud of how far Yacht Club Games have come with the franchise
Its awesome to see a Monster Hunter assist trophy! but it just makes me want the hunter from Monster Hunter as a character xD
@EightBitMan Nintendo fans interested by these games most likely either have a PC or a PS4/Xbox. World would run terribly on switch. Not because the switch is bad, but because of it's main attractive point: Being a handheld.
It's absurd to keep comparing games made for desktop pc/home consoles with games for the switch.
And content wise, Smash obliterates everything and doesn't rely on lootboxes.
@EightBitMan if someone gave you a cart of gold, you'd complain it was heavy. I'd rather be happy with what we do get aka the widest gathering of 1st and 3rd party game characters, stages, and music in a videogame ever than cry about what we've "missed out on because Nintendo hates its fans". I heavily doubt you're one of them and if you are, who hurt you and why can't every portable offering on the Switch help?
@Lthoise @Deihnyx @EightBitMan @Alikan Don't know about you guys but I'll be beating up Rathalos in MH Generations Ultimate in a couple weeks, a game none of the other consoles are getting to experience.
I wonder if Yacht Club licensed Shovel Knight to Brawl Out before they knew Shovel Knight was only gonna be an assist trophy. I'd have loved for Shovel Knight to be a legit playable character. Also it's a shame Knuckles is only an Assist Trophy, he'd have made a great echo fighter to Sonic (with a glide instead of the jump spring).
@DavidMac sorry in advance, I haven’t really followed Brawlout, but what connection does Shovel Knight have to that game?
@DavidMac - I would honestly take that echo over any potential Shadow the Edgehog.
I’m liking this
@XenoShaun
And I'll be right there with you hunting Rathalos in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate. 20 more days, fellow hunter!
See ya in the MHXX forum
Somehow, Rathalos manages to look more out of place then anything else in Smash.
And it is awesome
alot of clickbaits today.
why make all those articles, could you not put it in one?
i'm not realy hyped about this game, but i understand that people are with so many caracters.
I knew that after Mega Man and Street Fighter Capcom would bring something from either the Resident Evil or the Monster Hunter series next to Smash. Unfortunately they didn't confirm the Monster Hunter as a playable fighter. Still hope for Phoenix Wright though. ^^
Ancestral Steppe as a stage, really interested to see if they make any epic Monster Hunter remixes. (if not, then that's fine too)
When Shovel Knight got revealed, I kept saying “No way.” and smiling. I love Smash Bros. This game feels like a big, stinking pile of fan service, but that’s a great thing. Sakurai really is listening to us!
@EightBitMan booooo!!! Get out troll!!!
@MarioLover92
I feel you.
I flipped out so hard when I saw Zero, only to be let down when I realized he was an assist trophy. So close, yet so far.
At least he and Shovel Knight have representation other than a collectible trophy.
Sad to hear Ashley won’t be playable. Ah well, congratulations to Simon Belmont and the Big Green Tool (and those other guys).
This is awesome. Rathalos is my favorite. And it’s great to see the blue shoveler helping dig some graves.
@MarioLover92 once blade strangers comes out you will be able to play as shovel knight.
Shovel Knight has really gone far as a face of the Indie games scene. I wonder how did it happen and why him? He's hardly the first succesful indie game and by the time he arrived the whole retro platformer schtick was already tired (though no one did it as well as Shovel Knight before).
Is he just so marketable, being cute but tough and a bit ridiculous? Was it timing?
Either way I'm happy for him.
@SmaggTheSmug It's that his game is not just any retro platformer schtick. It's a mash-up of what everyone loves in retro platformers, presented in an easy to play and hard to master package. It's simply one of the best indies out there!
Is it me or a lot of assists are potential characters that got turned down? I'm glad they're still included though!
Shovel Knight as an assist is kinda too bad since I really wanted to play as him, but I'll keep dreaming of Shantae appearing in Smash too, in one form or another. After all, she's an icon too, and she has a close history with Nintendo! -fanboy rant over-
