At the end of last week, Nintendo of America narrowed down the release window of the new online service for Switch. It was revealed it would launch around the end of September, following an Amazon leak back in July. The same announcement also noted how there would be a “growing library” of NES games made available.
It looks like we’ll have to keep playing the waiting game, as Nintendo doesn’t appear to be very eager to share much at all about the subscription-based service right now. The latest morsel of information comes in the form of another tweet saying you'll be able to play Super Mario Bros. 3 online and displaying a single screenshot of the classic NES game seemingly running on the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the exact tweet below:
How do you feel about paying to play Super Mario Bros. 3 online? What information would you like to see Nintendo reveal about its new online service before its big release in September? Tell us in the comments below.

Yep, that's Super Mario Bros. 3.
I'm not expecting much from this, it's basically playing local player games...online. So...eh.
@Crono1973 agreed! Not much else to say...
How am I supposed to play a NES game online? Like is it multiplayer with you watching the other person play while you don’t or ...? Like what’s going on?
Geez, at least tell us it comes with a free copy of The Wizard or something.
I’d hope for an online high score board or perhaps a challenge mode to beat levels as fast as possible.
@Varkster I’m sorry, but I completely disagree. I would much, much rather play the original games with their professional level design than a bunch of stupid user created levels, most of which are a bunch of uninspired “don’t touch anything” automatic sidescrollers.
This will mark the 5th system I've owned this game on. At least I'm not paying full price for it this time around, I suppose. But it's going to take more than that to get me excited for a monthly Nintendo fee.
@DavidMac From what I understand, I think they said you can watch other friends' play the NES games as well as online multiplayer. I would assume the single player games have leaderboards too, so I would imagine at least there's the challenge of beating say, Super Mario Bros, faster than your best friends or such.
Nintendo really needs to step up their game on the Online Service details. If what they’ve shown so far is all that’s offered, it’s not terrible, but it could be better.
Maybe all the extra effort that could’ve gone into making the Online Service truly great went into stuffing Smash Bros Ultimate like a Thanksgiving turkey? 😉
@Desrever
At a mere $1.66 per month, the bar to make this sub worthy of an annual payment is rather low...surely they will deliver that and more.
About a month away and we still don't know much.
I’ve got it on our Wii U. So I’m not sure I care all that much. I guess it’ll be great to have it on another platform just to have
I’m a bit confused by folks saying we don’t know anything about the sub. Have I just been reading everything about it with a decoder ring? Between messages of “drink more ovaltene”, here’s what I know about it;
-Pricing (per their website)
-Sub options and length (per their website)
-NES games, 10 revealed and 10 unrevealed. This totals 20 on launch (per their website)
-Family plan features (per their website)
-Will be required for MK8, Splatoon, and other titles (per their website)
-Some discounts on software (per their...see the trend?)
Let me tell you, as a veteran gamer of over 20 years, I still haven't beaten Super Mario Bros. 3. That game is just too difficult. I had better luck with the original version of Super Mario World as well as The Lost Levels.
@astrofan1993 Seriously? I think SMB 3 is easier than SMB 1 and Lost Levels. And you have unlimited continues.
@astrofan1993 I’m there with you. So speaking just for myself, this is at least one game I’m going to get value out of. Dr. Mario is another, so that’s two games. Considering it’d be $10 for the two on VC, I’m satisfied spending $10 to get an additional 18 games at launch.
@AlternateButtons I read your questions after my comment posted. I certainly agree about the added features to NES games, and that’s more specific than the general “We don’t know anything about this” opinions I see. I’d hope that in games like mario, they’d let the inactive player ‘watch’ the active to make it more like a living room experience. They’re already going to have to stream players’ activity for games like Dr Mario, so it would only make sense (to me, anyway)
Idk what's worse, that this is an article, or that I clicked on it and commented.
Just so long as they sell the games so I can own forever, it's fine. But I don't want to lose it when my sub expires (which it will next fall, since I already played Splatoon 2 and Monster Hunter Gen Ultimate will be THE only other game I need online for)
@AlternateButtons
Totally agree. it's even more frustrating that a lot of their best games are multiplayer.
Reggie said Switch online is successor to VC, that means there should be more retro systems’ games coming in the future.
How about Super Mario Maker 2 with slopes & local multiplayer instead?
Wish it will include the entire Nintendo library of past consoles.
I'd much rather pay a flat, yearly charge to get a Netflix-style VC than have to pay $5-$10 per game for the umpteenth time. I hope that's actually what they're doing!
@Varkster Most of those levels are gimmicky, and they don’t blend together into any kind of coherent game experience. Mario Maker is a fun creation tool but it is by no means any kind of replacement for any proper Nintendo-produced 2D Mario game.
Yeah, this is what I've been waiting to play in September. An as-is NES ROM dump 🙃
For the love of god, how about GameCube?
Oh goody, seems the colours are still too dark, like on the Wii U. Please Nintendo, can you not fix this?
...Ugh, stop poking the fans with a stick and please give us more info, Ninty. The service launches next month.
Couldn't even be bothered cleaning up the scrolling line stuff at the edge of the screen.
Emulators have been doing that for some time now.
@Agramonte @Tyranexx I'm quite certain we have all the info were going to have. It's what we already have, plus this, for $20. They've even managed to make cloud saves sounds like they're just for system transfers rather then unified logins.....
@Agramonte vespyria, torna, or smb3. Really hard to pick with all these options....
@NEStalgia: I can't say I'm too impressed with what they have revealed as I'm not quite the targeted audience (not much of an online multiplayer person), but I can at least agree that the pricing seems fair.
“...displaying a single screenshot of the classic NES game seemingly running on the Nintendo Switch.”
Do NL contributers get paid per word?
Really? This would be a revelation if I were stranded on an island for 20 years, but I cant say many of us were ever in that predicament.
Nintendo is just screwing with us now.
@Tyranexx it's paid online multiplayer service.... You can enjoy the savings
I have been waiting for so long to play Super Mario Bros. 3. I saw that kid playing it The Wizard but I was never able to afford it. I can't wait! /s
Manhattan Project is all I ask for.
@NEStalgia Now THIS would had toss a wrench in the September plans 😅
As of now... my hardcover copy of Pachinko (and saving Flipping Death) needs to make it till September 21st (and Torma) 😏
maybe it means you have to have an internet connection to play it?
@NEStalgia: I might cave...eventually. For the cloud saves when I build up more of a Switch library, at any rate. I still think there should be a local backup option, but for the most part I understand why we can't have that nice functionality....
@Varkster It is the 3DS version not the Wii U version of Super Mario Maker that has the professional levels which are much better than New Super Mario Bros. 2, in between. Super Mario Maker for 3DS is awesome, except for the capped online features.
Umm yea good for people waiting on SMB3 on the switch I guess?
@Tyranexx yeah, I'm in it for the cloud saves mostly as well. At least if i can sync them between my switches... If it's just for system transfers that's really lame (the latest email made it sound that way though i find that hard to believe). I'm also hoping beyond hope it lets me play digital games on more than one switch if i log in.... Like every other non Nintendo console since 2007. But I'm not banking on it...
@Agramonte that..... That's just cruel.....
@thesilverbrick Wait, is it only online? Can't I play Mario Bros. 3 without relying on the internet?
Stoked.
@AlternateButtons Nintendo Online is more another "Switch fee" than anything that could be compared to Xbox Gold.
I mean, you are going to pay for save files backup and playing online on Splatoon, Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, basically. The bonus is NES games from the 80s. I find it ridiculous. At least on Wii U this is free (backups and online).
@thesilverbrick The sad thing is, there are actually quite a few awesome levels in Super Mario maker, but they are hidden among probably millions of "questionable" ones. One-screen puzzle levels for instance are a type of level I never knew I wanted so badly.
@nab1 That's true, there are awesome fan-made levels. However, they were buried among the rubbish, like good indie games on the eShop.
So does this mean I can play the competitive Mario Bros. part of this game online? That would actually be kinda cool.
I feel like Nintendo are going about this service all wrong. Had they thrown a little more money behind it, even if that meant a minor loss, they could have ensured that all the noise surrounding their new online service was positive. Beyond the price, I’ve not seen anything positive and that’s probably how it should be; what they’ve announced so far is pretty weak.
I feel like even some N64 games with online play would have been enough to change the narrative. Imagine a bit of Wave Race, F-Zero or Mario Kart 64 online.
Just how many times will I own this game? I’ve had it on almost every platform it came out on (with the exception of Wii U)
@Lizuka
60 excellent to legendary games on my NES mini say otherwise 😉
Nintendo never fails to impress with new games.
@Dr_Corndog Yeah, that should last you about an hour.
@BlueOcean let's be real, all 3 paid console services are just switch/xbox/Playstation fees. Only digital game discounts make it worthwhile, and we all know there's little reason to lock sales behind subs other than to drive sub sales, but as long as they're locked it does tend to pay.
@NEStalgia I have to disagree, I’m having enormous amounts of fun with this month’s psplus games, and could have said the same many times this past year. I hope Nintendo catch up some day.
@MysteryCupofJoe I highly doubt it will be online only. The Switch is a very portable console and forcing players to have an Internet connection to play a 30 year old ROM is just stupid and unnecessary.
Hopefully the emulation doesn't suck, and that NERD is handling it.
@thesilverbrick
It's one reason why I'm glad the system can run homebrew.
If there isn’t online enabled Bubble Bobble, I’ll be very disappointed. I could care less about Mario 1-3 or really most NES games. Give me GameCube.
Mario 3 Online will be fun specifically for the OG Mario Bros mode you could play against each other at the same time. To anyone that played the multiplayer of the remastered Mario Bros game on the various Mario Advance games back in the day knows how fun that mode can be when you're playing it in a good engine (The SMB3 engine is so much better than the OG Mario Bros, same goes for the Mario Advances version) with someone else.
The screen is already small why make my handheld gaming screen even smaller than it is already? Smh
I find this lack of ACTUAL info on NSO disturbing, especially since we're about a month before it's launched.
Well at least it's sort of FREE. Well tenths of pennies...lol. Call me when they show off Super Mario Sunshine. ;p
What this needs is some SNES titles to be confirmed. Give me PILOTWINGS. Of course F-ZERO X would be tops.
@astrofan1993 Let me take that "veteran" batch of your uniform, soldier...
I want super mario 3d world on switch and it has nice nice multiplayer for online services.. odyssey is great but doesnt scratch my deep platorming itch
Does anyone know whats the deal with the NSO- legend of zelda and how that will tie into "online gameplay?"
https://cdn.gamer-network.net/2016/usgamer/PSNClassicsFFVII.jpg
Considering that I’ve been able to download PS1 games to my 14 year old PSP, and N64 games to my 12 year old Wii, I don’t know why they would think that this image would get people excited. It’s a fun game, yes, but this whole thing feels like a huge step backwards.
That is brand new information!
Mind = Blown
>_>
@Lizuka
....are you joking? Very few games are good for it? Even with all of the VC releases, and what was released on the Mini, Nintendo barely scraped the surface of great games for the console!
@DavidMac Okay, so, basically, anytime you play one of these NES games on Switch, you can invite your friends to join the game and give them extra "controllers." At any time, you can "pass the [player 1] controller" (actual quote) to one of your friends who are in the game at the time, and anyone without an active controller is a spectator. So it's essentially the new age online evolution of the party play we used to do back in the 80s and 90s.
Note Super Mario Bros. 3 has always technically been a 2 player game, but mostly all that ever entailed was player 1 is Mario, player 2 is Luigi, and they take turns whenever one of them dies. If one player goes to the space the other player is currently on, they go into a battle mode that is... really just the original Mario Bros. (not Super)
But they forgot to tell you that it will run at 4K at 120fps
@Angelic_Lapras_King with the advent of youtube, what's the point?
@MH4 Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but networks and regular game development take different skill sets.
Not to mention, Bandai Namco are the ones helping Sakurai with Smash development and Nintendo is just publishing. So Nintendo is hardly diverting as much as you'd think to Smash's creation.
@pika677 Nintendo being Nintendo.
But hey, once SNES games start arriving, I'm sure online Super Mario Kart will be some fun....
@luke88 it's not that the plus/gwg games aren't a nice perk, but think about what they really are. In ps3/360 era they were literally free games. But in the ps4/x1 era? They are rentals, Netflix style, for a monthly subscription, just like Netflix. Only unlike Netflix you can't access the whole library, you can only access things added to the library during months you subscribed. Example i used in another thread was imagine Netflix worked that way, game if thrones season 5 released in January. But you didn't subscribe in January. So you'll never get season 5 in your library, you'll have to buy it retail price. That would suck. You'd have to always subscribe in order to actually have a complete library if you ever want to subscribe in the future. That's just what plus/gwg "freebies"are. A perk, yes, but a pretty watered down one designed to make subscriptions obligatory even if you're not using services at the moment.
While i also enjoy trying them when they are released, I'm still aware of what exactly I'm getting: random games i may or may not like as a subscription service i must permanently subscribe to if i went access to all the rentals at any future date. At 3x the price of Nintendo's service that doesn't offer that.
I do enjoy getting them but paying 66% less makes it easily justifiable to not have that kind of program. The sales are often more worthwhile. Though trying mafia3 is neat since I'd just decided the week before to not actually buy it on the big xbox sale
@Varkster Super Mario Bros 3 will never be irrelevant.
@WinterIceFox What more do you need to know about it?
@N00BiSH We know pretty much everything don't we?
@dublae Yeah but its like a classic album that you own on vinyl, and then cassette, then CD, then digitally and then back to vinyl. It's that good a game.
I can get on board with a subscription to play Retro games. But NES only? 20 games? Not a chance.
I thought it was number 4 in the series because of the Gamecube one, Wii one, and Wii U one?
If these NES games had widescreen modes I'd be interested, but since they don't I"ll just stick with the version on my Wii U, that I can play without black borders on my old crt tv...
Only getting this service because I need it for Splatoon sighes
By 'Play Online' do they mean some online leaderboard like Mario Odyssey?
@16bitdave that was my first thought when I read "play it online". I mean, what can be online about SMB3? Leader boards? Meeeeh..
Maybe you have to be online, to play it via stream. Would be awesome.....
Leaderboards would not be fun for me. I’ve never been a high score chaser, so seeing others just put the best times i could never achieve up on the board would just be discouraging.
I want Nintendo to outline the other 10 NES games and tell us when they’re gonna regularly add more. My hope is that after the initial 20, they’ll add at least one every month, but that feels like it’d be a stretch for Nintendo.
The discounts they will offer need to be decent too. Are they talking about PS or Microsoft level discounts? Or just another 5% here n there on games everyone already has on Switch?
Something I've appreciated with other retro releases is the ability to compensate for slowdown and flicker. Purists should also have the option to keep things the way they've always been. On my AVS there's a simple little picture setting that places a black strip over the left side of the screen's gobbledy gook on SMB 3 and any other title that has the empty space/tearing issue.
Yawn
@NEStalgia What Email about cloud saves and system transfers?
i know the subscrition fee is very low, but i would prefer a less higher fee wich would you be able to play at least gamecube titels from while tot while. it doesn't even have to be 1 gc game a month, lets say every 3 months.
im so fed up with this old 2d games from nintendo, wich they fool the audiance with.
just give us mario sunshine, luigi's mansio, pikmin 1 and 2, or metroid. games wich are actualy enjoyable to play on the move and at home.
That's it?
Wait I’ve just had a thought...
Can I play these games offline?!
At this point in time Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't a big deal to me anymore. That game is basically on every past systems now and I had own at least 6 versions of it across multiple platforms (NES, Super NES, GBA, Wii Virtual Console, 3DS VC, and Wii U GBA VC with all the e-Reader levels). It's nice to have it on Switch but at this point in time I could literally play the game blindfolded without much effort.
I'd rather have GameCube at £8.99 per game please please please Nintendo
@Medic_alert What information are you needing. They are charging for online play like MS and Sony. They said day one of the Switch launch. Some folk seem to be hoping for a massive catalogue of games for 20 quid a year! I'm not sure if folk are deluded, but we are paying to play games online. People should have been more vocal in 2006 when Microsoft started fleecing folk for free money.
Y'all so stoopid - don't you see the massive clue staring you in the face?
The score!
68910.
That's how many VC games are going to be available at launch of the online service.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC3GbiltOjw
A subscription service, seriously? I just picked up a switch but I’m not interested in a monthly bill from Nintendo for games. Rather buy the games I want and plant them when I want without subscription fees. C’mon Nintendo. Sega seems to understand this and releases some of their titles for purchase, I’m sure you can too and without some gimmicky subscription service.
Really, I'm surprised at you people. You're young now and I'm sure some of you have buddies locally to play retro games with, but you don't realize what potential this brings to be able to play games like these online.
Once you get older, your buddies will be off to college. Strong chances are that you will not be in the same college with them. Or they will leave your town to pursue a career. And eventually, you realize you barely see each other at all.
But, with this online service, you can still play your favorites with your buddy, no matter where they are. It's rather comical that people are now being hypocrites yet again and saying this is a bad idea, when in actuality, I'm sure many of you have buddies that you used to love playing retro games with that no longer live near you. I'm sure you miss those moments and this service will only let you have more of those fun times together.
I'm not defending the aspect that the games are tethered with it, as I would much prefer for them to be singular, offline purchases. But, the online multiplayer part is amazing and I am genuinely dumbfounded to hear the lot of you say it's a bad idea. With how bad net codes are on most emulators, alongside the fact most of your buddies probably won't care enough to take the time to set them up, this is a godsend.
But, I suppose I will be the only one to appreciate it. I also find it funnier for those saying "how will we play SMB3 online" when you forget that the game does indeed have multiplayer. Meanwhile, I sit here thinking how I can not wait to use that swap button and listen to my buddy rage quit every time he misses a jump over voice chat. It's like a live Let's Play that you can participate in yourself.
Sorry if I am coming off as rude for those that do appreciate this, but this is mainly to point out the potential for those that don't. I notice the majority of the comments here are just scoffing this feature off, but I am very happy it's with us. And obviously NES won't be the only thing we get, but it certainly will be the only thing we have for a while. I am excited to play those Pokémon Stadium minigames online and patiently await for its release.
@NEStalgia Nah, on Xbox you get tons of online features, big discounts and games, on Switch is paying for a few features that are free on Wii U and 3DS and the freebies are NES games.
If you get a few Deals with Gold on new games a year it's like the annual price has already paid off and you keep the games without the subscription. Without the subscription you also keep the Xbox 360 Games with Gold. If you keep the subscription you can play Xbox One Games with Gold too. Besides, the online features are infinitely better.
@BlueOcean Well, that's one thing I can agree on is the whole subscription thing being a poor idea, but I am still rather sad nobody is appreciating the retro games having online multiplayer.
@BanjoPickles I agree. Let's not forget that the first day of the Wii Virtual Console Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were available. Then they added tons of games including ones that were never released outside Japan.
Twelve years later if they replace Virtual Console with Nintendo Online they should offer more than NES games, especially considering that Switch is not backwards compatible with anything.
Also, it would be really nice if Monopoly gets added to NSO. I much prefer the NES version over the Switch one. Nostalgia may play a bit of a role in it, but the sound effects and music are also enjoyable. It just has a lot of personality.
A fullscreen mode would look nice.
@Regpuppy Yeah, I wasn’t being serious. 😃
Boring. There are exceptions, but NES games won't excite many people under the age of 40 that didn't live through that era. Those that are 40+ likely already own them in some form and return to them for nostalgia reasons.
Classic N64, Gamecube and original Wii games would have made it worth it.
@Notshane I understand what you mean. Like others have said, the multiplayer that was local back in the day would be online now and that would be cool.
I think that most people don't see much appeal in getting NES games because there's so much that could be offered by Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. 3 is one of the finest platformers ever, but people have it on Wii, 3DS, Wii U and SNES Classic Mini!
To take turns to play it online with people or to play Mario Bros. mini game with a friend doesn't seem enough. So yes, online multiplayer on NES games is a bonus but it seems that it's not what people expect from Nintendo in 2018.
Meh. If you want to excite me, you need something a little newer. I'd be stoked for N64 games, and maybe even a few SNES games, but there isn't anything I care about on the NES.
Wow they did it! Such geniuses..
@16bitdave "maybe it means you have to have an internet connection to play it?"
If that's the case, there is no way I'm signing up for that. Have to believe you can download these like games on the eshop.
@NEStalgia yeah, I do hear what you’re saying. Different strokes, I guess? I’d rather pay a little more and have access to some content I enjoy. Am in the exact same position you describe actually, almost bought mafia 3 and dead by daylight recently. Having an absolute blast with dead by daylight, that game’s hilarious.
Edit: the switch to the rental style system this gen was damn frustrating, wish people had kicked up more of a fuss about that.
I can't wait for online to launch! Take my money Nintendo, take it all!
@BlueOcean People keep saying about how the other two services offer so much more, but as a subscriber to all of them, I really don't get the feeling NO gives anything really less than those. Yes, the sales (which I mentioned earlier) are really the only big perk, though Nintendo said they will be doing that too. Yes we can presume not nearly as good a discount, but we'll have to see....either way they will have NO member sales too. The freebies (360 games aside) aren't freebies but rentals, and the magic of "better online services".....maybe for XBox it's true, since they run dedicated servers for first party games, but vs Sony? Nothing about Sony's online feels better than anything about Nintendo's online. All 3 services are just paying to play online, all 3 services will offer some degree of sales (that really shouldn't be locked to memberships on any of them) and the other two give rental access (and free 360 games on XB) but cost 3x more for the year. And for players who don't download digital games, XBLG/PS+ give you exactly the same thing for 3x the money. I subscribed to PS+ for years for cloud saves, but with limited bandwidth caps I couldn't download digital games. I was literally paying to subsidize other people's free and discount games just to get cloud saves and online play. I'd have only dreamed of Nintendo's service at the time.
People really got roped in with the freebies, huh? It's a heck of a marketing spin. But, then isn't GamePass a better expense for a larger rental library and locked discounts on included games?
I'm not saying whether the freebies and sales make it a good value or not, or whether any of these services ought to be charging, I'm just saying I don't see any real difference between the 3 services except that Nintendo doesn't give you random free {access to} games (that were often but not always commercial failures or titles that regularly go on sale under $15, sometimes under $5) and charges 1/3 the price. $5/mo gets you free {access to} games. $1.60 doesn't.
Isn't that kind of a clickbaiting stupid comment at the end of the article?
How do you feel about paying for SMB3? Umm it's included in a paid online service as a bonus feature which are a NES games library. That's not really buying the game, it's one of many things along with the online aspects including the multiplayer, family account, cloud save data, and more. It's not like you're paying $20/yr just to rent SMB3.
Why can't they tell us the launch date? Gotta make sure I put some coin aside for that family pass.
I just hope they give us games like rygar, gauntlet, and bionic commando
and now the theme song is stuck in my head.
@BlueOcean Yeah but considering that it's only $20 a year to use the service, doesn't hurt to try. If it sucks then at least you know better not to waste money on it the next year.
@JoyconGang the screen isnt small. Its 6". Its smaller because back then we had 4:3 CRT tv's.
@DavidMac It just passes control over to the player who's turn it is.
Not sure if I need mario bros 3 on a another platform anymore. Yeah, the cost of the online service is gonna be dirt cheap. But I’m not used to buying / paying for things I don’t need. Cheap or not.
@Trajan I understand but to border out a game on a small screen is dumb.
But will they be available offline and getting 3rd party support? Those are my biggest questions.
no no no. I mean sure, some people will go for this payment structure (or have no other means to play older games) but count me out. I was hoping the switch would have a virtual console (similar to wii u, and yes I'd even pay for the same classic games, AGAIN) but I'm done waiting for something that's not happening, or at least not happening in an acceptable manner to me. I hate to say it but I'm just going to go with the NES and SNES minis until there's a more practical way to play those old titles.
@Beatley82 I guess..if it’s looked at that way. I just hope that Nintendo revisits Zelda II and gives it a 2D/3D look...that would be a dream come true
Honestly this is good enough for me, as I'm a HUGE NES fan, but I assume we'll eventually be getting SNES and such too. For me, I'm pretty excited for the possibility of playing NES games online with friends and such.
I also wonder if you can buy another online pass for your Japanese account, and get access to Famicom versions of the service too.
Wow.... Call me when they add GBA or GC games.
Yes Nintendo, I TOO can put a screenshot of a videogame onto a picture of the nintendo switch. Silly.
When the time comes though I will be interested to see how the service grows.
Need more than NES titles. But it's a start.
what a great time to be a player!! we have a 30 years old game on Switch!!! ...AMAAAAAAZIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING
I am not a fan of this kind of service.
Sure it not that expensive, but I like to have control of the games that are in my library.
With this kind of rental service you might be able to play Super Mario Bros. 3 one day and the next day it's removed to make room for some other game.
Or simply removed because the stop the service.
I'd rather pay more for more. If price is an indicator of quality, then $20 seems about right for what we know right now. Being cheap shouldn't be the main selling point.
No intrest in over sold NES games, just fix the appauling voice chat!
My last renewals of XBLG and PS Plus cost me £26.50 and £31.34 respectively.
£18 for Nintendo Online does not look tempting in comparison.
I really don't know about this online crap... I love SMB3 but I don't want to own it a 4th time 😕 why is it always NES or SNES?? Where's the VC us gamers want!? GameCube and N64!!!
It's a month away and we know nothing about this service, I'm not fussed about any aspect of the online as it offers me nothing so far
£18 gets me what eggsactly? I know it's cheap and most people want it for either Splatoon or cloud saves (both irrelevant to me lol) but what else that's good???
I've heard discounts on the eshop? Only good if a game without a discount already was about £40 and I can get it for £15 or less then maybe lol
I still don't believe online is the future for gaming
Hey NL, were y'all aware that if you tap on the image of the Switch running SMB3, then arrow to the right, there's an image of Cloud and Barret in a battle from Final Fantasy 7? Please don't tease me lol!
@DannyBoi Dude, you're getting really obsessive with the Switch's Online Service, it's not healthy. You claimed Nintendo is anti-consumer now, but where's your evidence to back up that claim?
Honestly, I'm betting that some of us are getting really tired of you saying things like Nintendo Switch Online Service is bad and will be half baked and only NES games will be on it. I and some others believed that the Switch's Online Service will contain more than NES games, just wait and see.
But seeing how you act, you're rather impatient or just craving for attention. So again, obession about the Switch's Online Service and parroting the same thing over and over again is not healthy for you.
Just realized NOA called him raccoon Mario and not tanooki Mario. Who’s running their Twitter? Sega???
@nab1 @nab1 "One-screen puzzle levels for instance are a type of level I never knew I wanted so badly."
You should play them then. It's not like it's hard to find great levels. It sounds like I'm the only one who uses the Super Mario Maker Bookmark website. You can sort by Star Ratio (so you're always playing the best levels), then sort by levels released within the last month/year,etc., and choose Puzzle from the Tags. Most Puzzle levels are one-screen puzzles (and it should be obvious since the one-screen puzzles are so short (small maps on the Mario Maker Bookmark site)
@Audiobrainiac The Raccoon Leaf and Tanooki Suit are different powerups.

I mean, this was cool on the Wii ten years ago. Now, I expect more. Why isn't the Wii's impressive list of Virtual Console titles available on the Switch? I'd love to play some N64 titles.
@Nintendo_Thumb The thing is, a lot of the levels specially these days tend to rely on "hacks", for instance there was one puzzle level that required one to pass through two vertically stacked music blocks, which you can do under certain circumstances; once I realized that I gave up. The bookmark site makes it somewhat easier to filter, but it's still finding needles in a smaller haystack.
I have an NES classic, so I'm good for NES titles...need more incentive
In 8-9 years we may be even be able to play SNES games online on Switch U! Can hardly wait
@nab1 They're hard puzzles to be sure, and, since many of them don't have deadly obstacles, they have good clear ratio's that don't make them look hard (the game only counts towards clear rate when someone passes it or dies, but it doesn't count when someone quits, and people often aren't going to wait around for 500 seconds to die before quitting and trying something else). Still, I don't think there's many impossible hacked levels, they're just very difficult, or unknown by most.
Getting through horizontal music blocks, for instance, isn't any big deal if you know how to do it; you just run towards the blocks, while holding a shell and throw it forward, just before (small or costumed) Mario runs into the note block, and don't stop running. The shell will hit the note block, the note block will rise up a little, and Mario runs right underneath it to the other side.
Then there's diagonal note blocks, that look impossible, but, after a few attempts, you should be able to squeeze through after running and jumping. Still, saying all that, I've played thousands of them myself, and I usually only pass maybe a third of the ones I bookmark. It's definitely the most difficult tag compared to the rest. Because, normally you can just look at the clear rate to determine levels to your skill level, but, that doesn't usually work for 'puzzle' levels.
@N00BiSH Ha, of course they are. Thanks.
I agree with the fact that the screen shows a small area to play. Surely they would implement a full screen mode. Kinda ugly imo.
@BlueOcean That's absurd, though. It's all I've ever wanted from them. And just cause I haven't owned any past Nintendo consoles doesn't mean I should be shafted of releases on the Switch. Yes, they're out there, but you didn't think about it this way.
The Wii is very old and can only output at 480p. The Wii U has a very, very bad NES emulator. It's so bad that the homebrew community hasn't put in any real effort to get more games running on it since that would require injecting onto the existing emulator, which isn't fun to play games on.
The Switch, however, looks to be addressing the horrid problems with the Wii U emulator, plus the online multiplayer. I'm astonished this is a "niche" audience. Cause what are your other options? 480p or an option that makes the Wii look better by comparison! Even thinking about it logically, it makes sense they should end up on Switch. If it emulates anything like VS. Super Mario Bros. does, then that would make it the best.
Oh, but wait, there's still the 3DS. SMB3 had multiplayer, but it was limited to Download Play. And even if it had online, the 3DS isn't the coziest way to play these games. It is rather sad it has the best NES emulator between the Wii and Wii U, though.
So yeah, I don't care if it's niche, I don't care if people cling onto the past and force me to buy old consoles, I want these games on the Switch and I guess I'm the first person to be thankful for them. Not so much the subscription part, as I would prefer to buy them separately, but I appreciate them having online multiplayer.
@Notshane Well your reply was good, thanks. I love 3DS for playing classics though.
This is terrible if it requires an internet to play even the one player game. What if I wanted to enjoy it somewhere where there's no wi-fi? The only advantage is for Nintendo with the subscription fees and anti-piracy protection. Meh.
