I’m sure Illumination is itching to make a Smash movie.
As for everyone saying you couldn’t make a Smash movie, clearly you never Ed played Subspace Emissary in Brawl.
That said, Sonic is only a very small part of Smash, and given that Paramount has the rights to Sonic, WB at least has the rights to Detectice Pikachu (though I’m doubtful that the Pokémon company actually gave away full movie rights the way Marvel did back in the day) I’m not sure what studio could possibly actually do the work. Realistically if Nintendo did do a Smash movie they could easily do the first one by themselves with a studio, after that you’d then go around to Sega and Square to get the rights for Sonic/Joker and Cloud/Hero/Sora… haha wait a second… if they wanted to do everyone is here they’d need to have Disney Animation involved due to Sora. And there’s no way that anyone is giving another massive franchise to Disney if they can help it. So you’d never get everyone there.
Realistically first Smash movie would have the Nintendo characters and maybe most of the third parties. But I suspect we’d see some random hold outs.
@River3636 you act as if 64 bit processors are not impressive. The Switch has a 64 bit chip, as do the PS5 and Xbox series whatever. Until gamers need more than 16 exabytes of RAM you’ll have 64 bit SOCs.
The being able to remove the top half makes me think this is about releasing one controller that can then be customized how you like. Same battery and radio but this plate makes it have buttons for n64, this one game cube, this one NES.
So glad I impulse purchased MK8D for 50 CND when it was on sale mostly because I figured I’d be too lazy to switch between the Switch and Wii U when friends were over. This makes it so worth it. Still wish Wii U owners who had bought digitally would have been given an opportunity to upgrade their game for a small fee the same way Wii games could be migrated to the Wii U for a few dollars.
Hopefully with the Switch all our eShop games will carry over to the next console.
I think I’m some ways Smash Bros is a somewhat meta verse… thing. At the same time, literally everyone talking about meta verses is awful and nobody, especially Meta/Facebook know what the hell they’re doing.
This is exactly what you’d expect a remaster to look like. This isn’t a remake. It’s taking the same engine making it run on newer hardware and upping the resolution and possibly cleaning up some textures. That’s all anyone wants. That’s all they did for FF7, 8, 9 etc.
Given what happened when SE tried to improve FF6 for mobile this is all we want from them!
I always find it weird when people say “I wanted a new game”. Like, if they did announce a new cartridge there’s a super high chance people would complain about how new mechanics don’t feel as good as 8 and 8 is the better game on Switch just get that.
This way they avoid all that, they have one definitive Mario Kart that they feel is mechanically perfect on Switch (and it is) and then they add in a whole game’s worth of tracks (nearly all of which are completely rebuilt and reimagined in the current engine.)
This way they also don’t have to deal with people being split across two releases. This is by far the best choice they could have made.
I’m going to have friends over every time they launch new tracks! This way nobody will have practiced them!
@Dingelhopper I noticed that too. I’m wondering if they made this video a while ago, or if the plan is to simply have a lot of the courses not have nearly the same background depth as before.
I suspect the ones from tour they may have just straight up imported.
@dBackLash clearly you have never played 64. It literally just had you fight the roster then Master Hand as the story mode. Melee had a story mode as did Brawl. That said have you gone back and played either lately? Fighting random geometry pieces really isn’t that fun. And unfortunately YouTube makes all the work done on the cinematics worthless as they’ll all get spoiled right away. So Nintendo just poured the money for that into the reveal trailers.
@Marioracer you really miss break the targets? The only halfway legit complaint is that you wanted us space emissary two. If that’s true, then yes, it’s lacking.
But I think World of Light did a great job of giving us cut scenes that let you make up a story in your mind, and then letting you fill in the rest.
I almost hope they slow sonic down a little bit. Part of the con of Breath of the Wild was the pace at which you discovered the world. I feel like an open world Sonic game would basically need to be like a spider web of paths crisscrossing through different places.
I don’t think that’s what this will end up being since they mentioned there will still be zones. I suspect it’ll be more like Mario Odyssey if the Kingdoms were bigger but more empty. Which could still be fun I guess.
I still think if you really wanted to bring the magic of 2D sonic into 3D you’d have a world with about 5 layers of webs the lowest level would be underground which you could fall into through pits and would sometimes have big under water sections, but be largely tunnels, pits and rivers, then you’d have the ground levels which would have 3 separate heights that you’d generally switch between, and then you’d have a sky level which you’d occasionally end up in and would often have some sort of reward for making it that high up. On all three levels you’d have a variety of different biomes that would bleed into each other.
That’s the way I think it would make sense to try and recreate sonic’s world in 3D. But I don’t think Sega wants to put the time in the way. Nintendo did with Odyssey or Breath of the Wild. So I suspect that they’ll try to make it feel open world but it’ll ultimately just be on rails.
@OldManHermit on the one hand I loved that show. But as I’m older now the random naming of things after things that aren’t remotely related to them… it just detracts from it. Like Dot is named after a Printer, Mouse is named after an input device. Fire walls were treated like actual fire, and Hexadecimal was named after non-base ten math. It’s just weird.
@OldManHermit oh wow. I remember the character but never made the connection. Ray tracing was barely talked about back then. Man that show lifted so many names of things but the internal logic made no sense.
Wow that looks gorgeous. That Zora’s domain part was stunning. I hope CeEmu is supported in Apple Silicon soon so I can justify buying a a MacBook Pro with the beefier version of Apple’s new GPUs.
Most perfumes and colognes contain a laundry list of chemicals you’d never put near your body if you knew about them, but the manufacture doesn’t have to list them because of stupid laws that protect trade secrets. Also 30% of people say they get head aches from perfume and other airborne irritants. Do you really like the idea of making a third of the people you interact with sick?

Maybe their other games are fun, but I don't think I'll ever give them a chance again.
The game looked good, and if Nintendo offered me a free copy on Switch to make up for the license I bought on the Wii U, I'd gladly play it. It felt like they were doing some really cool stuff with alternative pathing and what not. Either way, this game controlled like charred garbage.
My understanding is that most of these Fortnite tie ins are just skins. Smash is still a way better game in terms of cross over. I'll take quality over quantity any day.

Honestly, I feel like Sonic is one of those franchises that only works in a specific style, specifically 2D.
In the 2D games they had creative level design where you were essentially zooming through tunnels, but it didn’t feel like tunnels, because you couldn’t fall off the Z axis. 3D sonic is just messy and barren in 3D. In 2D you often had these little blocked in areas where you had to platform. It felt like a lived in world. I remember being so impressed by Mushroom Hill Zone when I was a kid.
@Kiwi_Unlimited Nintendo specifically said that they were focusing on software. It’s your fault if you were disappointed.
Rumours have the Switch Pro launch timed for September, which would mean if it’s announced it would be at the earliest announced in an august direct. Nintendo isn’t going to give up on selling Switches all summer, because after it’s announced their unit sales will drop unless they have tons of stock of the new one.
To be honest with the current chip shortage, unless Nintendo pre bought everything they could need I could see the Switch Pro getting put off.
(Though I would love one specifically for 4K Super sampling.)
I find it funny how some people didn’t think this was a fantastic direct. We got to see a significant amount of game play for the next Zelda, which I suspect will be Holiday 2021, since Nintendo will want to have some demoing of new stuff. (Unless they did spring and simply figured people know enough from having played the last game.
The new Mario Party will be huge. The Metroid game looks awesome. I might even try it. (Though I think I’m gonna try playing Super Metroid first. Then maybe Samus returns on 3DS. (I kinda hate my 3DS the screen is so small!)
There was a decent mix of third party stuff too. Overall I thought this was one of the most even E3 directs Nintendo has had.
For those wondering about the whole world wide chip shortage thing. The major problem happened when companies cut orders in the future because of the pandemic and their space in the fabs got bought up by other companies.
Nintendo was always planning on having these made they would have prepurchased a ton of next gen SOCs.
Love 3K. Never owned a Genesis, but a neighbour had a Genesis with a copy of SK, I ended up renting 3 and playing through the whole game. One of my best memories. Really hope it’s remastered by Christian Whitehead though. Mania simply looks better on high res screens.
@Dethmunk I suspect Sweeney might actually have been working as a proxy for somebody else. There are a number of companies like Amazon, Spotify, Netflix, etc, who all view Apple’s customers as incredibly valuable, but also run their businesses in extremely thin margins or even run their businesses at a loss.
Apple is like Nintendo in that they don’t do loss leaders. They do have some apps and features that they just make free as a perk of being on their platforms, but they don’t try and bait and switch you in by making hardware seem cheaper than it is.
There are a lot of companies with much more toxic business practices who resent this.
Or we could not torture people who are allergic to perfume.
Fun fact: products like this contain formaldehyde. Which is poisonous to all people, not just people who immediately get sick from airborne irritants. These types of products are one of the reasons cancer is so much more common today.
Just use an under arm anti-perspirant and you’ll smell fine.
I actually just had a look at the top selling NES and SNES games of all time and it makes it even more clear that Smash needs more representation from Square. If you look at the top selling games for the SNES you have to go to #12 before you get to a game that isn't already represented in Smash, which is FF6 and then soon after that you have Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.
I've never been someone to complain too much about Fire Emblem characters in Smash. It's a popular game that I don't play that's owned by Nintendo.
I think some of the frustration just comes from the fact that there are other characters that could be included from other franchises. Personally I'd love to see Terra from FF6, or Frog from Chrono Trigger, if they're gonna add somebody from an RPG that has a sword.
Also really Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and Fire Emblem are the only series with more than 4 reps. (I sent the number at 4 because otherwise if I said 3 I'd have to acknowledge Metrio which got half their reps this game.)
There are several franchises that really deserve more representation than Fire Emblem. Sonic really should have Tails and Knuckles as playable (and Sonic's moveset should be redone after Sakuri has a chance to play Sonic 3&K). Mega Man should also have Mega Man X or at least Zero.
If you look based on unit sailes for series that have any sort of connection to Nintendo consoles, both Sonic and Mega Man should really have more representation, and I suspect both Sega and Capcom would welcome the chance to license their characters, even if Square is stupid and dumb and acts like Final Fantasy 7 is the only game anyone has ever cared about.
It would also be really cool to see a character from FF5 or FF6 who could use skills from different job classes.
I'm also seriously wondering if Lara Croft isn't in Smash yet because Square won't license her or if Nintendo doesn't want to license her.
@rockodoodle I tried it before and was only somewhat impressed. But they’ve got some new great games like FANTASIAN by the guy behind the early Final Fantasy games. And I’m loving it. Also Grindstone is so addictive.
DLC speculation at this point is basically some people on YouTube's job. It's straight up free advertising and it helps drive sales. Given the fact that the next console is probably going to be a Switch Plus (one that uses DLSS to get to 4K) this Smash game is probably going to last Nintendo for about ten years.
I suspect if they do release another piece of hardware that's just an upgraded Switch they'll probably wait for a year and a half or so after the DLC for ultimate is finished, then release Smash Ultimate Deluxe which will just have the DLC included. Then a year after that is out they'll release a third wave of DLC.
Or they could just release a third wave of DLC soon. Ultimately I think the sales of fighter pass two are going to be the biggest factor in determining whether or not they do another pass or save additions for the next iteration of Smash that will come out on whatever console follows the upgraded Switch in 7 years.
I'd love it if an option for gamers who want 4K at home was just to update the dock. Heck charge me 200 for it and build in the new processor and have me just use the old one on the go, I won't mind.
Honestly, it’s a smart strategy. Games don’t have a sense of urgency. With new releases you might want to be in the initial wave, but if you don’t care about that you might wait for a sale. Nintendo wanted this game to sell well so they made it clear, if you waited for a sale, you’d miss out. If you wanted to own these games on Switch then you’d need to pay up.
@blindsquarel As far as cryptic...I think you need a dictionary.
In terms of next-gen, that's purely semantics. Sony wants to push a new piece of hardware that has new exclusives because they're actually making a massive change to their hardware. They're including an SSD that will allow for games to be made fundamentally different than they were on the PS4. Microsoft is pushing the Series X because the Xbox One really didn't sell that well and they basically want a do over.
Nintendo already stored games either on an SSD or the internal flash memory. The successor to the Switch is not going to be massively different. They're not going to chase Sony and Microsoft. Both companies have more money and are selling their systems at a loss.
So the next console they make unless they've lost their mind is just going to be a version of the Switch that can push content to a 4K TV and have it look good. The Switch is already powerful enough to run the games that Nintendo is making, and most of their 3D parties are already porting their less insanely taxing games to the system.
Nintendo has just spent a ton of money releasing a bunch of new first-party games over the last 4 years, as well as porting the previous five years of Wii U exclusives. They've got a ton of first-party titles on a console that is still outselling Sony and Microsoft.
Their first-party games are generally stylized enough that features like ray tracing and what not really wouldn't see a benefit from the GPUs in the new Xbox and PS5. All that Nintendo has to do is make sure that there's a system on the market that gives them headroom to grow.
Given the fact that the world is in the middle of a chip shortage due to a number of factors, it probably isn't a great time for Nintendo to launch a new system. They're still selling a ton of Switches, and Nintendo has no problems making good games run like butter on the Switch.
When things are better though in terms of supply they have more than enough sales in the future to justify asking Nvidea to design a chip like the Tegra that they're using now. If they do a die shrink Nintendo can probably significantly increase the amount of processing the chip can do without actually negatively affecting battery life. Plus Nvidea has been showing off DLSS, and that's probably going to be the route that Nintendo chooses to go in terms of meeting the needs of 4K gamers. They'll design a bunch of games that are supposed to output at 1080 and then they'll let the machine learning chip upscale them to 4K and even 8K later, and you'll effectively get just as good of a picture as you'd expect from a PS5 with much better power efficiency.
Heck, they might even be able to release a Pro Dock that would let you connect your classic switch (or even the Lite?) and put a new chip in the dock that would actually run the game in docked mode at 4K but still let you access your save when you're using your Switch on the go.
Either way, Nintendo learned from the Wii. They're going to keep releasing games for the Switch for a long time and not just assume everyone would buy a totally different piece of hardware.
@blindsquarel Becuase a new console generation is a huge risk. Why not just release a Switch Pro, let indie games come out that run on both, build up an install base of people who want to play the existing and new Switch games in 4K, and then eventually start producing exclusive games for the Switch Pro.
The Switch Pro would basically be like announcing and shipping the Switch's successor without immediately depressing interest in the Switch. Since the Switch Pro would be backward compatible with the Switch, they could leverage the huge install base of the existing Switch while continuing to build up an install base for the Switch 2. They could release games for the new console that would continue to run on the new one.
Basically this is what happens with PC gaming, iOS and Android gaming, and what Microsoft and Sony are doing with the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Since the new system is backward compatible you can continue to release games for both, and just have them look better on the new one. Eventually the new one drops in price so much that you phase out the original Switch, keep the Lite for people who want to game portably only, then eventually change the internals of the Lite so that it has the new more powerful chips so they can run the games and just be more power-efficient.
This would also allow their evergreen games to continue to be ever green.
They won’t announce any games that REQUIRE the new hardware for a few years. They’ll just have it as a high end option for those who want 4K gaming and more high intensity games will just drop in resolution. Eventually once the Pro out numbers the normal Switch then they will start having games exclusive to it.
If Nintendo ever has hardware that could do ray tracing, I’d love to see what they could do with remaking 64 like this. Would really love to see 64’s physics with some higher res textures, and graphics like this.
3D World was such a good game, the most fun I've had in a 3D Mario, I really enjoyed Odyssey but I feel like in terms of a game you can enjoy by yourself or with other people, 3D world was just head and shoulders better.
I did play the hell out of 3D World, but I didn't quite 100% it, I'm hoping one of my friends gets it and we can play online and try to 100% it.
Also apparently BF will be about 3 hours to beat, 6 to 100%. That said, I'm confident I'll enjoy this way more than the Pokemon DLC or something like that. Plus 3D World is a great game. This is one of those ones that I just have to get day one. If only out of the hope that there'll be a 3D World sequel.

Re: Nintendo's Direct "Dominated" E3 2021, Peaking At 3.1 Million Viewers
Re: Rumour: Switch Pro To Offer 'Surface-Style' Tabletop Flap, USB 3.0 And Ethernet Connectivity
For those wondering about the whole world wide chip shortage thing. The major problem happened when companies cut orders in the future because of the pandemic and their space in the fabs got bought up by other companies.
Nintendo was always planning on having these made they would have prepurchased a ton of next gen SOCs.
Re: Here's Your First Look At Pokémon Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl And Legends: Arceus' Boxarts
Pokemon fans are weird. The Box arts are 3D renders for games that are supposed to be nostalgic. I think the fan base just like to complain.
Re: Rumour: Sega Will Re-Release Sonic 3 & Knuckles In A New Sonic Collection
Love 3K. Never owned a Genesis, but a neighbour had a Genesis with a copy of SK, I ended up renting 3 and playing through the whole game. One of my best memories. Really hope it’s remastered by Christian Whitehead though. Mania simply looks better on high res screens.
Re: "As You Can See, I'm Not A Switch Player" Admits Epic Games' Tim Sweeney
Re: Random: You Too Can Smell Like Ryu Thanks To This Street Fighter X Davidoff Collab
Re: Random: Hey, There's Also A Smash Mod That Keeps Fire Emblem Content And Removes Everything Else
Re: Random: Hey, There's Also A Smash Mod That Keeps Fire Emblem Content And Removes Everything Else
Re: Soapbox: 'I'll Play It On Game Pass' Is Becoming Common, But Does That Affect Switch eShop?
@rockodoodle I tried it before and was only somewhat impressed. But they’ve got some new great games like FANTASIAN by the guy behind the early Final Fantasy games. And I’m loving it. Also Grindstone is so addictive.
Re: Soapbox: 'I'll Play It On Game Pass' Is Becoming Common, But Does That Affect Switch eShop?
I’m trialing Apple Arcade. And it does encourage me to try games that I wouldn’t have otherwise paid for.
Re: Rumour: Smash Ultimate Fans Think Fighters Pass Vol. 2 Might Get A Bonus Seventh Character
Re: Rumour: Evidence Of A "New" Nintendo Switch Dock Supposedly Datamined In System Update 12.0.0
I'd love it if an option for gamers who want 4K at home was just to update the dock. Heck charge me 200 for it and build in the new processor and have me just use the old one on the go, I won't mind.
Re: Dev Explains Why Nintendo Made Mario's Anniversary Games Limited-Time
Honestly, it’s a smart strategy.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider
They won’t announce any games that REQUIRE the new hardware for a few years. They’ll just have it as a high end option for those who want 4K gaming and more high intensity games will just drop in resolution. Eventually once the Pro out numbers the normal Switch then they will start having games exclusive to it.
Re: Random: Super Mario 64 Gets A Ray Tracing Makeover Thanks To Fan Mod
If Nintendo ever has hardware that could do ray tracing, I’d love to see what they could do with remaking 64 like this. Would really love to see 64’s physics with some higher res textures, and graphics like this.
Re: The First Review For Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Now In
3D World was such a good game, the most fun I've had in a 3D Mario, I really enjoyed Odyssey but I feel like in terms of a game you can enjoy by yourself or with other people, 3D world was just head and shoulders better.
