Re: Super Mario Maker 2 Confirmed For Switch, Launches This June

DavidMac

I never realized how much I wanted to play as Cat-Mario in 2D!

That said it seems like they're still sticking with some power ups in some modes. I'd really love one mode where I could use a cape, a hammer bros suit, a frog suit, a fire flower, an ice flower, a tanooki suit, and a boomerang bros suit. Like they don't have to put them all in every mode, but especially in the 3D World one (is 3D World replacing NSMB mode?) I also hope they really include as many enemies as possible, it looks like they've added the sun, plus several new ones to Mario World. But I know in the first version you couldn't even make a boomerang bro.

Yeah, I'm just really hoping they do a ton of different options. Also I guess now we know why they came out with Super Mario U Deluxe when they did, no way anyone was going to buy that after Mario Maker was available.

Re: Piranha Plant Is Now Available In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

Well, it's good that you sound more reasonable than your language in your previous post would suggest.

In a happy note, I finally got through to Nintendo, they're sending me a DLC code. It should take three business days ... because their system for sending out the codes is badly designed.

Re: Smash Ultimate Exceeds 12 Million Worldwide Sales, Top Ten Best-Selling Switch Games Revealed

DavidMac

Here's hoping they're working on Odyssey 2, and BOTW 2, Super Mario Party 2, Mario Maker 2, Mario Kart 9, and a 3rd Splatoon game. Sometimes Nintendo can be a little sparse with releasing two games in a franchise on one system. But I'm really hoping that they realize that people would be more than happy with them releasing follow ups to all those games with the same engine.

Heck for Breath of the Wild 2, give me the same Hyrule map, put new stuff in it, and put in a way to flip between the Light and Dark worlds, and give me a bunch of new dungeons and shrines and I'll be more than happy! (Oh also show that the world is actually being rebuilt.)

For Odyssey 2, people loved the cappy mechanic. I know Nintendo might not want to do it again, but it was a fantastic game. (Even if I personally didn't love how easy so many moons were.) I'd also be happy with a remastered Mario 64, or a reimagined Mario 64 done in the Odyssey engine.

I also really hope that the port Mario 3D World and Pikmin 3. I don't know if I'd buy Pikmin 3 again, but it was a fantastic Wii U game. Mario 3D world simply has to come to the Switch, it was a great game that was way better than New SMBU, tons of fun to play with other people. Plus the campaign felt long and satisfying. I feel like since sales weren't great for it they might avoid a follow up, but it and 3D Land were so much fun. I'm not saying they should do a follow up -instead- of a sequel to Odyssey, I'm saying they should do both.

Windwaker HD feels like a no brainer, and if they're smart they'll drop it and Twilight Princess HD between now and the next mainline Zelda game. (The only reason I can think of for them not having done that already, or announced them already is that they might have a 2D Zelda in development that was planned to be able to run on the 3DS or Switch depending on whether or not the Switch flopped.)

I'm thinking with Prime 4 being held back they're probably going to rely more heavily on ports for part of this year to fluff out the first party side of things, given that they still have a ton of great games they can bring over and they'll probably want to hold some of their non-ports for the holiday quarter. (What big games do we have already announced for this year? Luigi's Masion, Animal Crossing, Demon Ex Machina, Fire Emblem) All of those sound like they're going to be good games, and Animal Crossing is a big seller, but I don't think any of them are really games you want to bet your holiday sales on.

Re: Nintendo Cuts Its 20 Million Switch Hardware Sales Target Despite Incredible Holiday Season Performance

DavidMac

Keep in mind when they announced the 20 million thing they probably expected Yoshi earlier in the year, and they might have been expecting Fire Emblem to come this year too. There also might have been a few other games that ended up getting delayed that they hadn't told us about.

Either way it's only two years in and it's already one of their best selling consoles.

@AlexSora89

Fun fact, using the term SJW to refer to anyone is a good way to advertise that you never learned critical thinking, and don't have a college education.

Social Justice is the idea that people should be treated fairly, regardless of religion, sexuality, disability, race or any other factor that might cause small minded douche bags to try to out group them.

Using the term implies that there is something wrong with people who want fairness. That's pathetic. You might not like particular things, like when people suggest that things you like aren't good because they think there's some sort of prejudice behind them. But trying to somehow make it taboo to want fairness is just pathetic. And trying to negatively brand people just because they sick of gay people being attacked in the streets, is sick.

Seriously, learn to educate yourself and learn how you're being manipulated, and stop trying to manipulate other people. If you truly believe in free speech, you should also try believing in intelligent restraint. (But you have to be the cause of that least part.)

Re: Piranha Plant Is Now Available In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

@UmbreonsPapa well I'd love to argue with you, but I don't have the email. I use iCloud, so this is one of the few instances where having an email provider who respects your privacy and deletes your email when you say to delete it doesn't work in my favour. I normally would have been able to restore from a Time Machine backup ... only I got a new external HDD for Christmas, so I moved my old Time Machine drive to the Wii U since I'd been using a 2.5 inch that wasn't getting powered by it's ports, and I moved that to backing up my MacBook and put the new drive connected to my old computer that I'm running as a torrent + Plex server. Of course when I did that I thought, "Is there anything on my current backup I could need? Nah my laptop has everything on it I need, it'll back up to it's new drive, everything will be fine!"

Apparently not. I realize that I bare responsibility for this. I just think it's absurd that Nintendo doesn't have a self serve option to fix this problem. It's insane that I HAVE to talk to a rep on the phone (when their call centre was crashing under the load and just hanging up on people today) when they could just have a page in my Nintendo that lets you get the code again.

Heck even the Wii U, if I get a 'reward' with My Nintendo it'll automatically know in my Wii U that I get X discount on X game. The eShop should be able to just KNOW that I get the DLC fighter. It's a needlessly complicated system that is ultimately going to cost them money, because they have to pay for the customer service reps who are going to have to sort through these. (And they've sold how many million copies already?)

Re: Piranha Plant Is Now Available In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

@B-Locks bad communication is their fault. If you go back and listen to any of the directs and what not, they emphasized that you needed to register if you got physical, and if you got digital you didn't need to do anything. I don't remember hearing anything about them giving out download codes back then, and I do read check all incoming emails and don't remember seeing anything saying "this is your code for the DLC fighter" heck even just having a picture in the email would have alerted people better.

Also if I buy something from Apple on iOS, I own it on all my devices. I can get new devices, I can always click on purchased and find any old purchases. I assume Android users can do the same sort of thing. If I buy something on Humble Bundle, I can log back in and see my code. Nobody should ever be emailing people any codes of value that they can't get through that company's website and their online profile. This is a classic example of Nintendo not getting how to do things on the internet.

Re: Piranha Plant Is Now Available In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

I'm so mad! I didn't realize they were emailing us a freaking download code! They send so many receipts every time you order something from the eShop, I got sick of them clogging up my inbox and just deleted everything from Nintendo I'd gotten! I literally purchased the game and the fighter pack DLC day one! (Actually I bought it on Amazon, they screwed up the preorder then I bought it on the eShop and sold the physical copy when it got here.)

Ugh, love this game but Nintendo needs to seriously learn how to run an online service. Like, just hire a couple people from Apple or Google or something, and then make a system that doesn't rely on frickin download codes.

Re: Rumour: Dataminer Uncovers SNES Games For Nintendo Switch Online Service

DavidMac

My guess is that the two extra emulators are Game Boy and N64. Maybe even GameBoy and GBA.

Given how they remade OoT and MM, SF64 and SM64 for the DS and 3DS, they might not want to do N64 releases on NSO right away. Which is a shame, I'd love me some classic N64 goodness, but I suspect we're more likely to see only more simple games on NSO for the time being.

Re: Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development

DavidMac

Nintendo will keep making consoles until there's another flop.

That said I could also see them getting bought by Microsoft (which I wouldn't be happy with) or bought by Sony. But that won't happen unless they have another Wii U sized flop. Realistically if they're serious about mobile, a partnership with Apple where Nintendo had all their studios working on full games designed to be played on Apple's hardware would probably work out well if Apple left them to keep producing content at an arm's length, sort of like what they've done with Beats by Dre. (That said even though I'd love to see Nintendo have access to Apple's ARM chips, I think that'd be the death of Nintendo.)

Re: Pokémon The Movie: I Choose You! Is Now Available On Netflix

DavidMac

I don't know why, but I saw this and decided to watch it. Holy crap the adults in the pokemon world are super careless! Trainers get to travel on their own at 10? Teaming up with random strangers?

Like literally at one point he comes back with Pikachu absolutely beat up like crazy and Nurse Joy is like, "Oh who were you fighting?" This world is messed up.

Also he finally meets Ho Oh at the end (big spoiler I know) and his first instinct after he's literally been murdered by Marshadow and brought back to life by ... friendship? Is to pick a fight with a crazy demi-god bird!

Re: Gallery: There’s No Need To Bash These New Streets Of Rage 4 Screenshots

DavidMac

I think the no need to bash headline is a bad pun about it being a fighting game. I don’t think the writer understands how confirmation bias works though. As their pub will unfortunately gear around 30% of people to immediately agree that there is something wrong with the graphics because they assume somebody thought they were even though the author is just making a bad pun.

Re: Feature: Digital vs Physical - What Is Your Preference for Nintendo Switch?

DavidMac

On the Wii U the only game I owned physical was the pack in game. Everything else was digital.

With my Switch, I own Odyssey digitally since my first system came with a code. Mario x Rabbids was a Christmas gift. Xenoblade was physical since I thought I might want to sell that. (I really should have sold it already.) Octopath was physical, though I don’t know that I’ll ever want to part with it. (Even though my friend saved over my file with all 8 stories done.)

I’ve bought way my digitally, but I only had a 32 gig card and was trying to save space until I bought a bigger one. But then there was a great sale on 128 gig cards just before Christmas so I told a family member who never knows what to get me for Christmas and they were like, “okay, here’s my card, go buy it and I’ll wrap it.)

So then I went a little crazy around the time of the game awards and bought a bunch of things digitally.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Shifts 3 Million Copies In The US In Just 11 Days

DavidMac

@SwitchForce Hey, are you one of the guys who do the Switch Force YouTube channel? If so you guys do a good job a pretty good job.

(And yes I'm aware that for however much a Nintendo and Apple partnership would be great on paper, the only way Apple would let Nintendo use their parts is if they bought the company, and then Apple would probably mismanage them because Apple just doesn't get video games.)

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Shifts 3 Million Copies In The US In Just 11 Days

DavidMac

A resolution bump for older games actually makes a lot more sense. GPU power is increasing much faster than CPU power. They could ‘easily’ keep the same textures and upscale the polygons to render at higher resolutions. The iPad Pro already has the same sort of GPU performance as the One S. Depending on where Nvidea has their mobile GPUs by the time they want to do a hardware refresh, they’ll release “the new” Switch. Saying it can render 2K won’t be nearly as impressive so they’ll probably hold off until they can render some games in 4K. It’ll also mean that old games show in 4K but newer cross platform titles might only do 1080, which is fine.

Either way the Switch is probably going to be Nintendo’s console for all of the PS5’s lifecycle. They’ll release new games that run on the original hardware but look better on the newest devices. The same way that things work on PC and mobile devices.

You won’t buy a new switch because you have to for newer game’s. You’ll buy it to replace the one you already own when the battery starts to go or when you want the picture to look nicer.

Hardware refresh cycles scare the industry so much, because what if the instal vase shrinks? The Switch is going to live on like the 3DS. Eventually some games might require the newer version, but it’s not going to be a new generation. From here on in it’s going to be improved hardware but the same platform.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Shifts 3 Million Copies In The US In Just 11 Days

DavidMac

@jbreez00 cheapest I could find was a 700 dollar tablet. Add in the cost of joycons.

Not to mention they’re not going to do a 720p OLED. So you are gonna have to include a newer Nvidea chip (not sure if they even have a legit successor to the X1 that would meet Nintendo’s needs) and probably a beefier battery. Also pretty sure Nintendo demands higher margins on their consoles than Samsung does in their tablets. (Though they might finally be done trying to make Apples iPad numbers look bad by channel stuffing.)

Either way, people might pay 100 extra for a Switch Pro, but it won’t be coming out any time soon if they’re going to do things like enable 1080 in hand held mode and 4K on old games when docked.

They’d be better to just go with a higher quality LCD in the Switch especially if they don’t want it to wash out in the sun.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Shifts 3 Million Copies In The US In Just 11 Days

DavidMac

@jbreez00 do you want to pay a grand for that OLED Switch? The screen on the Switch is 7 inches, the screen on Note 9 is 6.5 and it's a $1000 phone.
Nintendo can get cheap 7 inch screens because there are a ton of 7 inch devices made (mostly garbage Android tablets) the machinery to make them already exists, Nintendo just needs to put an order in to one of the many companies that can make one, and bam. You're looking at at least another 5 years before OLED screen costs are down to the point where you can put a 7 inch one in a $300 dollar console and still afford to put internals in the console.

People who are asking for an OLED screen simply don't understand economics of scale and where consumer tech is. It would also be great if Nintendo was able to drop the X1 and move over to whatever A series chip Apple is going to use in their next iPad Pros, but that isn't going to happen either.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe File Size Revealed, Just 100MB Larger Than On Wii U

DavidMac

If you want new 2D side scrolling content on the Switch, buy Hollow Knight, buy Celeste, buy Deadcells, but Bro Force, buy literally one of the hundreds of 2D side scrollers. The great thing about the Switch having sold something almost double what the Wii U did in it's lifetime, is that tons of great games that weren't made by Nintendo have come over.

I'm sure Nintendo is working on a new 2D Mario, (they do like money) but it's not done yet. So they gave a different group of employees (a much smaller one, maybe even contracted out) the old files for this game and had them package it for the Switch.

Nobody took anything away from you, if anything this game selling well will encourage Nintendo to push out the next one faster, (though it already was one of the best selling Wii U games.

Either way, this isn't preventing an original 2D Mario game from coming out. The same way the Mario 3 on NSO isn't preventing this from coming out. Nor will the eventual port of 3D World prevent a sequel to Odyssey.

Re: UK Charts: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Becomes The Fastest-Selling Smash Game Of All Time

DavidMac

Amazon screwed up my preorder! I ordered it July 10th, and they only gave it to Canada post on launch day. Not, it was waiting with them and would be delivered same day, I mean they gave it to them from their warehouse and Canada post was estimating that it'd be a week until they got it to me!

So I ended up losing my $20 preorder discount, and just cancelling the order. I just went on the eShop and bought the download version. I was happy to have physical and not use up my storage if I could. But I know I'm getting a 128 gig card as a Christmas gift, so I figured screw it, I'll just get the download. Though then I found out it was going to take an hour and a half to download, (Seriously Nintendo what's with capping off the speed of your connection!? I have 600 mbps down!) so it probably would have been quicker to drive to Best Buy and get it.

Either way, I finally have the game and I'm loving it! I've played a ton of World of Light, and while I loved Subspace, I still feel like I have a really strong sense of story even without the cut scenes. I'm like 10 hours in and it feels a little grindy but it's also super satisfying. Though I wish I knew where Link is!

I've gotten weirdly good with Wii Fit Trainer. Like I normally main Mario, Link or Pikachu, but I'm finding that when I can't beat somebody with Mario, Kirby or Pikachu, I bring in Wii Fit Trainer and it's a walk in the park. I'm also really getting an appreciation for Fox.

Re: Here Are The Game Awards 2018 Winners For Nintendo Switch

DavidMac

Yes, when you find yourself echoing the talking points of any mob that's when you know you've sacrificed your identity for belonging. And it's not a sacrifice worth making.

Having a good narrative isn't the same thing as making an impact. For example, Avengers Infinity War, was a thing of narrative genius. They made the villain the main character while you were emotionally invested in his opponents. They worked in a huge number of important characters and met impossible expectations from the fan base. From a story writing context, Infinity War was something that most writers would have told you couldn't be done well.

HOWEVER. Nobody who saw Infinity War is going to tell you, "I walked out of the movie theatre and I felt like how I see the world changed."

Whereas for example (I'm just gonna stick with the comic theme especially since this was the first impactful media thing that came to mind when I was thinking of an example) if you watch Jessica Jones Season 1, David Tennant's portrayal of Killgrave was deeply impactful. Now some people don't like JJ season 1, and fine whatever. But for me seeing it, already going in with some understanding of narcissism after having dealt with a sexually predatory minister recently (the denomination knew he'd been diagnosed with NPD and was harassing immigrant men half his age, while his wife with a hearing problem was in the same room, bloody awkward) seeing JJ season 1 was impactful.

I got to witness a legit narcissist on screen, through the lens of the superhero genre, I got to see all the irredeemable mess that is a full blown narcissist for 13 episodes, I got to see the way he absolutely terrorized people who continually thought he'd reached the limits of what he could do, and continued to transgress the autonomy of others. And ultimately I got to see actress Kristin Ritter's character snap that awful piece of garbage's neck. And I sighed the deepest, soul healing sigh of relief I can imagine.

That's the difference between a good narrative and an impactful piece of media.

Both are really good, but JJ season 1 actually has a lot of pacing problems, where as Infinity War doesn't make you feel anything other than general loss and surprise. Infinity War is probably the better piece of writing, but JJ season 1 made the it feel like somebody else understood the pain and frustration of the garbage I had to deal with.

So yeah, I totally get why they're two separate categories.

Re: Here Are The Game Awards 2018 Winners For Nintendo Switch

DavidMac

@SmaggTheSmug I think it's pretty clear. It's the sort of game that when you've played it, you put it down and you're like ... huh, this is going to stick with me, this is going to affect the way I approach things in the future.

If your idea of being political is, "It makes me think of things I haven't though about before," that seems really unhealthy.

Re: Joker From Persona 5 Joins The Battle As The First DLC Character In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DavidMac

@ShadJV Honestly, a straight port of FF7 would have meant getting an emulator for PSone working on the Wii U a console that was dead by the time Smash 4 came along. If they could have gotten PSone games running on the 3DS they probably would have made the deal to get FF7 on that.

My guess is that the deal with Cloud was, "Okay SE, we know fans want Cloud in Smash, we know even though you guys are being dicks, you want Cloud in Smash. So how about we put him in this version, and the next version for our next console, and you make a port of FF7 for our next console?"
SE responds with, "Yeah I guess... it's good for us in every way possible and requires virtually no investment. But we're only giving you two music tracks."
Nintendo roles their eyes. "It's such a shame you guys have such a good back catalogue."

My guess is that the discussion with Atlus went, "Hey, you've put a good number of games on our consoles, let's talk Smash."
"We think you should put a character from Persona 5 in."
"But that's not even on one of our consoles."
"Do you remember how much money we lost on that Fire Emblem cross over we made for the Wii U?"
"So which character were you thinking?"
"Joker."
"That's an exclusive for the PS4."
"Remember how we were the only developer other than you who put out a game for the Wii U for how many months?"
"So after the exclusivity deal with Sony runs out, you'll port it to the Switch?"
Atlus shrugs, "Sure."

(I realize that last joke line could be seen as a reference to that crazy lady who wrote the books that crazy people love. I thought about it but I haven't read them, and I think she was probably a sociopath based on what I know of the book.)

Re: Nintendo Embraces Opportunity To Share New Games At E3 2019 As Sony Opts Out

DavidMac

I think Nintendo is doing it right by not having a keynote (Most of those keynotes are awful everyone trying to be Apple, nobody doing it right) but still showing off games on the floor.

I suspect Sony won't be there because they have no big first party games to show off and are relying on third party games. They also might be looking to start doing like Nintendo does and not announcing new games until they're close to ready to ship.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when the PS5 is really to announce.
