I have the PS5 version, which is missing two of the "new" games, but that's okay - I ordered a physical copy for the switch, because these games are a natural fit for a nintendo console.
There are only two Earthbound-like RPG's that I know of, that I also didn't regret playing through - Those are Undertale and Everhood. I played a few others, like Omori, which was reasonably good, yet depressing, and a few others that were just mediocre.
I'm not sure if I'm ready for another super-depressing, Earthbound-style game. This review almost has me sold. Perhaps after finishing Expedition 33, which already feels like it's set to make me cry harder than the first time I watched Edward Scissorhands.
I sort of did the same thing recently. I had one on pre-order last year, and with all of the rising expenses, I cancelled it. I also sold off one of my cars - a very nice, sporty one....because, I just want to have money saved for if/when things hit the fan.
I did refurbish some of my legacy consoles, like my Virtual Boy and PS3. However, there is a used Switch 2 for sale in my area for 400 USD, tax-free, and I may pick it up this weekend. With a new Fire Emblem on the way, it's hard for me to say no.
Anyway, god speed on saving money - It's always a smart choice, though one that is increasingly difficult in this age of instant gratification and FOMO.
It has extra stages and areas, plus an extra boss. And a vault, and unlockable content, and vastly improved graphics and sound. And the voice-acting is pretty great. And, the scenes are all skippable. So, what are you on about?
I bought the collection on my ps5, and recently, we've been watching Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers - I'm old-school and grew up with Disney afternoons as a living room staple. That, combined with the sheer quality and nostalgia factor, are more than enough reasons for me to double-dip. Hopefully the physical won't be overpriced. I'd love to get a real, in-hand physical copy.
Edit:
I just ordered the switch 1 version for 30 dollars - That was an easy decision.
That makes sense. To be fair, I went back to fire up the Gamecube, and played through the first five battles - It definitely isn't as difficult as I remembered it. I can't say the same as Radiant Dawn - that game gets pretty gnarly later on.
I'm playing through this right now. It definitely borrows a lot from the top-down Zelda games, but has a harder edge. I think the 9/10 given in this review is well-deserved. It's a razor-sharp, enthralling game with very few weak points.
This was my main struggle with the game. Controls and menus just aren't very intuitive. But once I got past that, finally got the controls down, man what a ride. It's a good time. But, I get it.
I'm not sure how you think this among the easier Fire Emblem games. Going through normal, without losing a single character to permadeath, is quite a task. I take it you probably take your time, and/or maybe you're just good at the game. The game requires careful management and planning to progress efficiently. All it takes is one wrong move with the wrong character, and it's back to square one for a battle. It's pretty easy to mess up after the first ten battles or so.
I think the newer FE games are the ones that are easy, especially Engage. Permadeath is where difficulty comes in to play.
Edit: I'm probably in the minority here. Perhaps the game is easy just playing through, but I've always played with the perception that I need to keep everyone alive.
It had some flaws, but is still a good game. I didn't regret playing through it at all. If it were a bad game, I wouldn't have played through it, or would've put it down no more than halfway through.
I just finished this game last night. Man, that last boss didn't play around.
Anyway, I really liked all of the NPC characters. This game for me was like Metroid meets The Wizard of Oz. I didn't think I would like the characters, but they all grew on me. I find nothing wrong with Myles. I did find some issue with Sol Valley, and well the ending....well, that definitely was....something.
Myles is fine. So is everyone else. I think the comradery was done very well, and keeping Samus silent was a nice touch. It allowed me to draw my own conclusions, and kept from breaking the immersion through her point of view.
It's the tariffs, rising costs, and a developing recession here being somewhat held aloft by the current AI boom - which is set to implode within a year or two.
Lots of people are holding on to their money right now. Some of us have already lived through a couple of recessions, and realize that it's nice to have some savings on hand in case things go south. And a lot of folks don't even have savings - they are just living paycheck to paycheck, so a switch 2 or ps5 just doesn't make sense when there are perfectly fun legacy consoles already sitting under the tv.
I don't think I could do it today. I just don't have the patience. I was young and full of fire, and the moon must've been right. It's an insanely hard game.
Though this newer release should make it more accessible for all....because I don't think I can get through it with the one-hit kills in this day and age.
I love anything tribute game does. Their work with TMNT, plus the vastly under-rated Panzer Paladin game come to mind. That said, I am trying to hold off for a physical copy, perhaps even the second version of the physical copy that has the inevitable DLC. I think Shredder's Revenge has three versions - original, 1st wave dlc, and ultimate with all dlc. I'm not mad, I just want to try and hold off for a while.
Yes! This is my favorite entry in the series. I bought the game on virtual console on wii and played it for hours until I finally beat it. It's an extreme game that requires dexterity, strategy, and memorization.
I will definitely be grabbing it day one. It still looks great on SNES, but seeing it in HD will be icing on the cake. Hopefully this game will get some of the exposure it deserves, as I think it's under-rated, even in the niche schmup circles.
I just broke out my Wii U after having it stored away for a few years. I have the gamecube controller adapter, the pro controller, a new battery for the gamepad, four wii remotes, two classic controllers, two nunchuks, and a TON of games.
I'm currently playing through Twilight Princess HD, which is soooo good. Anyway, this is really cool. If I had an extra gamepad and switch, and much more technological talent, I would be all over this.
80 is fine. One of my favorite video games I've played this decade - one I probably sunk over 200 hours into "Friday The 13th: The Game", sits at 61 on metacritic.
I've played quite a few AAA games with high review scores that have nearly bored me to tears.
One of the first Switch 2 games I will be getting - I had cancelled my preorder, as I've been busy with other things and just play my switch and ps5 until things calm down. But I will be getting this one at some point. I'm glad to hear they nailed the landing.
Earthbound blew my mind as a kid. It's still endlessly fun to play through over and over again. I thought Chrono Trigger was over-rated from the start - a good game, but nowhere close to Final Fantasy VI, and I much preferred Earthbound over both of those.
Also, F-Zero GX down in the 80's? Mario 64 in the 20's? Ugh. Oh well, not my list.
I'm so tired of seeing this franchise getting mistreated. Gaiden was pretty good fun, and I liked Neon as well. But for every one of those, we get a Double Dragon 4 and well, whatever this is. And I feel like there hasn't been a truly awesome DD since Double Dragon Advance.
I have been playing Phantasy Star IV on the sega collection on switch.
I'm also trying to wrap up Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound. I unlocked one ending, but it's going to take me a while to get the secret ending.
Also, I'm on stage 5 of Bloodstained: Curse of The Moon 2. It's pretty tough. Not impossible, just old-school NES tough, requiring memorization and practice.
About seven or eight physical games a year, as of late, not counting legacy systems like NES and Genesis. As far as digital games, maybe fifteen or so.
So yeah, 20 to 30 games a year. And I sell over half of my physical games when I'm done with them. I only keep the ones that I plan on replaying at least once in the future. Bear in mind, that about two-thirds of these are more "bitesize" and "indie-style" games. I try to limit my playtime.
I have thirty-two physical switch games, plenty of digital.
I have about fifteen physical ps5 games, the same for ps4, also plenty of digital games. If I hadn't sold so many, I'd have way more, but I ran out of space a long time ago.
And as far as legacy systems go, my attic is full. I guess the nieces and nephews will get a pleasant surprise one day, hopefully a long time from now.
I'm not sold on the bike. I will wait until I play the game until I give it a final verdict, of course. That said, at this point in time, I would much prefer she just turn into a morph ball and roll around the way. But perhaps the idea of a humanoid tumbling at 200+ kilometers per hour requires even greater suspension of disbelief than a motorcycle in space would.
"Digital products, on the other hand, generally don’t have a lifespan."
Sure. Because servers are never taken down, and hard drives never fail.
Like dude, myspace botched a server migration years ago and over 90 percent of the data is lost forever. Millions upon millions of songs, lost forever.
I just think you're on a weird hill, man. You certainly like to generalize. None of what you said applies to me, and doesn't apply to most gamers on here.
I definitely do not need sexuality in a game to enjoy it, and I don't feel the need to get my "rocks off" either. I'm just not put off or offended if I see a pair of boobs in a game, or a ripped guy's abs, or whatever. Bodies are bodies. We are humans, and sex is in things because people like sex.
I do agree with you that some of the characters in video games look a bit young, especially from Japan, but a lot of older people "look young". And there is a big problem over there with some promoting that type of thing - that said, accusing Sunsoft, or any party of promoting such a thing, without sound evidence, is unethical unto itself. There are other companies out there you could direct your feelings towards.
A thirty-second look on your comment history is hardly a deep dive. Also, you're the one just bringing up the subject of underage girls and body parts, and at no point has Sunsoft implied that any of their characters are under the age of consent. The reality that you're bringing up such a stretch at random is telling. And all just from that half a minute of what I saw on your comment history is constant whining about anything and everything.
What are you even on about? This is the company known for Blaster Master and lots of good licensed games in the 80's and 90's. Also, looking at your comment history, it seems your actual issue is with any games that come from Japan....and well, just about everything else as well.
A long, long time ago, I used to rent the first Bubsy game. I kinda enjoyed it for what it was. It was frustrating, and I think the levels and gameplay just couldn't work with the hardware limitations.
The main drawback was not having a good view to see obstacles and plan ahead. If they remade the first original with the camera panning out, and made Bubsy more capable of taking hits, it would be an otherwise decent game.
But I played through that game, and started to memorize the stages, and thus it became playable to me. The game did have good graphics and music for the time.
I still wouldn't recommend them to anyone who doesn't have masochistic tendencies.
There have been several Metroidvanias over the years, that I have enjoyed and replayed more than Hollow Knight - Infernax and Astalon: Tears of The Earth being my favorites. Hollow Knight for sure is good, but I agree with folks who say it isn't the "be-all-end-all" metroid-style game.
Yet another game I've chosen to purchase on the PS5 instead of Switch or Switch 2. I'm playing Dragon Quest 3 HD2D on PS5 right now. It's really good so far, so I'm definitely getting 1 and 2. (Dragon Quest 1, a.k.a. "Dragon Warrior" was my first rpg, and it came with a subscription to Nintendo Power in the U.S. - for fifteen dollars).
At least I can still enjoy my copy of Dragon Quest 11 on switch. It's still a good way to enjoy the game if anyone wants some quality Dragon Quest action on a Nintendo console.
"The naivety is that so many focus on one issue that is fashionable to complain about while ignoring another that is worse. It also covers those who think GKC disappearing will mean a return to full games on a cart when it won’t, it will mean more digital only releases."
That's possible. I can't confirm what the outcome will be from that. I do not that more people are complaining about the key card lately, because it was just introduced. Code in a box was hated too, but it's not new, so naturally less people are going to be commenting about it.
Personally, I think it's all terrible. And on that note, I will posit that buying game key cards will most likely not aid in influencing publishers to release the full game on cartridge, but that supporting game key cards will encourage these publishers to adopt this format as a new (and lowered) standard for "physical" games.
Can you elaborate a bit on your argument a little bit? It doesn't make sense. How do you know that people didn't complain about code in a box? Last time I checked, that was also very unpopular. And key cards are arguably even worse.
And how does any of this make consumers naive? Key cards are not legit physical versions, since they have little to no real game data. So, I just don't see any validity or soundness to what you're trying to convey.
I'm backing up my CD collection right now. All files to lossless flac format. I have some that are around thirty years old now.
I stream music on my phone all the time, but it sounds like crap compared to CD. CD's have a much higher bit rate than compressed mp3. In terms of gaming, Mega Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3 still play the best on the original NES console. I still have most of my cartridges. They are beautiful.
A great way to preserve these things is to take care of them. It's quite effective.

@Smithicus
Re: Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Has Officially Gone Gold, Out This October

Re: Review: Kirby And The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World - Kirby's Best Shines Even Brighter
I'm glad I held off buying this for switch (I did borrow it from the library and played through it).
I'm betting this looks gorgeous in 4k. I will probably be getting it at some point.

Same here. I used to look for a copy on switch first, but now I go straight to ps5 or ps4 for anything that's not first-party.
