Re: Fire Emblem Engage Anime-Like Opening Cinematic Surfaces Online

Davestator

@Wexter

Yeah, Fire Emblem has always been anime-inspired. It's just that the style of anime has changed over time.

Also, FE has always had waifus....and husbandos.

And, some of us are getting old, and pop culture will not always cater to our desires and tastes. I would also love if rock n roll and melodic pop were mainstream in music, but they're not. Ages come and go. Gotta suck it up and be grateful that someone once gave a cts[ enough to market directly to us....that's just my take though.

Re: Hands On: Fire Emblem Engage Is Surprisingly Fast-Paced And Delightfully Deep

Davestator

Everything I have read from people who've actually played the game has been positive.

I do have my complaints with the game, and I strongly dislike how day one DLC is handled now, but the game itself seems to be pretty good.

My biggest fear is that they make a mediocre world and story, and I hope that I'm wrong about that. I like to be wrong about things quite often, because I often think bad things.

I'll find out for sure when the game arrives (Yes, I gave in already).

Re: Soapbox: 2022 Was A Watershed For Companies Taking Retro Compilations Seriously

Davestator

Cowabunga Collection rocks, especially with the recent update. I'm still holding out on a comprehensive / complete Turrican collection, though I really enjoy the series.

I enjoyed Sonic Origins, and also Sega Genesis Classics, but both of those games pale in comparison to Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It had all of the games from the newer collections had, plus a ton of secret stuff, unlockable master system and arcade games. People really took it for granted back then.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Ports We'd Love To See In 2023

Davestator

I'm playing through Tales of Arise on PS5 right now. It's ridiculously good. not just as a game in general, but with the amount of polish - down to just viewing cutscenes at one's own pace. You kinda just have to play it for a while to understand. It's rewarding, but with most of the stress stripped right out.

I'm just not sure if the switch can handle it with a decent frame rate. They would definitely have to scale down a bit. It would still be worth it.

Re: Review: The Outbound Ghost - A Heartfelt But Ultimately Thin Paper Mario-Like

Davestator

@Old_Man_Nintendo

Color Splash wasn't bad - it just needed more time in the oven.
It would've been amazing if a few issues were worked out. I so wish Nintendo would release a remastered version with the kinks worked out and some more meaningful upgrades/progression. It certainly had lots of cool ideas and elements going on.

(For example, cooking that steak properly took me hours to figure out, and that kind of stuff was ridiculous. Barely having a hint what to do was more frustrating than immersive. I know that I'm not alone, because there are videos for it.)

Re: Best Of 2022: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

Davestator

Depends on the franchise, and how dedicated or big a fan the player is. I think someone would really have to like Zelda in order to go back and play the first two. I love those games, but I can see them being a headache to a modern gamer who is used to convenience, lots of save points, and so on...

Then again, games like Elden Ring have that old-school difficulty, and it seems to be coming back in style again.

But yeah, a franchise like Sonic The Hedgehog....the Genesis games would be great starting point. Those were great for jumping in right away.

Re: Two New Side-Scrolling Action Platformers Are Coming To Nintendo Switch In 2023

Davestator

I've played through the steam demo of Gravity Circuit, and it's very promising. The gameplay is super-sharp, controls are tight, and the music is bangin'. It plays like a cross between SNES-era Mega Man X and Shatterhand on NES, what with its satisfying close-range combat mechanics. The overall quality feels a cut above most indie action games out there. They would really have to drop the ball on the release for it to not be good.

Re: Inti Creates Brings Classic Castlevania-Inspired 'Grim Guardians' To Switch Next February

Davestator

@SonOfDracula

I think your criticism of inti creates is also one of their greatest strengths. Of course, they rip off the classics. The thing is, is they do in such a great way - they know what worked best in each classic series they take inspiration from, and make it work fantastically.

The Curse of the Moon games took everything I liked about the original NES Castlevania games, and refined it to near-perfection. Those games are razor-sharp, and fun to play over and over, delivering a refined version of classic experience.

It's really not a problem, because everyone wins. Because these new games are being made, people will always go back to playing the original Mega Man and Castlevania games. If anything, these folks are keeping it alive.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Launches On Switch Spring 2023

Davestator

@Darknyht

Since value is highly subjective to the individual, especially in terms of video games, I don't take offense to that.

When I speak of value, I mean in averaged or generalized terms. If someone else doesn't see these as worth their time, that's not a bad thing. Just personally, I'm really excited, despite the steep price tag.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Launches On Switch Spring 2023

Davestator

My take on this:

Yes, Square-Enix is pretty lame for limiting this release, and also charging a bit much (imo 60 would be the sweet spot).

and at the same time....

The value is still there, and I still feel like I'd be doing myself a massive disservice by not ordering a copy anyway - and that's bearing in mind that I have all but FF3 on the gba.

Re: Review: River City Girls 2 - The Girls Are Back With A Strong, Albeit Safe, Sequel

Davestator

@Zulzar

Sure, but I think it's also more refined and calculated. It's a "chill" brawler, gives me time to think, with branching routes, choice of upgrades, and it can be challenging enough at times. I dig the pacing.

I like the other games too - It's just a different experience, and I play the different games depending on what mood I'm in.

Anyway, I ordered the 1 and 2 combo for PS5 off of play-asia. I'm going to platinum both games back to back. I'm hoping the performance issues won't be present on that version. Maybe the combo disc will be worth some money in the future too.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass, Wave 1 DLC Launches 20th January 2023

Davestator

@C25CLOUD

Nobody told you that you can't buy the game and enjoy it. I think that most people on here are speaking for themselves. There are plenty of "complete" editions of games on sale for like 20 bucks right now. Day 1 DLC is shameful practice, and I will pass. If you feel like buying it day one, then more power to you. Options are a wonderful thing. I'm also glad they're letting us know ahead of time, because I don't feel like wasting my money when I can spend that extra cash on a nice steak or sushi dinner.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Fire Emblem Engage Expansion Pass

Davestator

@QuickSilver88 Honestly man, I don't know. Folks seem to give Nintendo a free pass with this stuff, but not so much the competition.

I was going to buy Engage day one, but will be crossing it off for now. Did the same thing with Xenoblade 3, and will do it for Breath of the Wild, if that's how they want to so it.

You are right with it becoming more prominent though. Development is becoming more expensive - it's arguably justified as well.

Still, I'd much rather shell out 80 to 100 bucks for the full experience, which isn't realistic. I'll wait. The fomo isn't going to phase me. It's hard to say "no". The game looks fun.

For me, it's a pass for now. (It kinda sucks seeing Nintendo act exactly like the other companies now. Can I blame them? No, but it sucks anyway.)

Re: Witcher 3's Free DLC Update Doesn't Have A Switch Release Date Yet

Davestator

@Astral-Grain

I just uploaded my switch save to GoG. I'm waiting for the update on my PS5, and I'm going to see if I can transfer my switch progress. I'm doubtful, but I will give a shot in a week or so....If it doesn't work, I will just have to finish the switch version, which I've regurgitated a hundred times is a good port.

Re: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake News Coming "Soon" Teases Series Creator

Davestator

Dragon Quest 1 was the first NES game that I ever owned by myself (Dragon Warrior, here in the States). I've gotten in and out of the series over the years, and loved 11S on switch. I also went back and played the first three, then six, seven, and eight.

The series is so good, and I love how it sticks to its roots so strongly. I'm really looking forward to this good.

Also, eight was so good, heck most of them are good. They could remake any of them and it would be good.

Re: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For December 2022 And January 2023

Davestator

@ArcticEcho

Counter-argument: Some of the Fire Emblem stories - Radiant duology, especially - are pretty great. Those games touched up on topics like racism, classism, phobias, political corruption, and all that stuff without sounding preachy.....

but yeah, lately the stories have seemed pretty phoned in. The gameplay and characters are what keep me coming back for the most part.

Re: Upcoming 2D Platformer 'Onion Assault' Pays Homage To Super Mario Bros. 2

Davestator

Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite Mario game of all time, so much that I'm excited for this and will probably purchase, regardless of its slightly-generic appearance.

(and yes I know the history of the game very well - I got the game when I was six or seven years old, and the cartridge said "Super Mario Bros. 2", so that's real enough for me)

Re: Best Wii U Games

Davestator

Super Mario Maker hit me harder than any other Wii U game. I was absolutely blown away with the interface and intuitive nature of the game. Breath of the Wild was also very good. I think Super Mario Maker deserves a higher spot, but it's not everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine.

Re: Fire Emblem Engage Characters - Every New And Returning Hero Revealed So Far

Davestator

This is the first nintendo game I've been genuinely excited for since Metroid Dread. I think this one is going to surpass Three Houses overall. I would like to see a romance mechanic return, but this good/evil talk sounds like it has potential as well. I like the characters, and look forward to playing female and male versions of Alear, even if their design is still taking time to grow on me.

Re: Review: Moero Crystal H - A Hilariously Saucy Dungeon-Crawler Which Fans Of The Genre Will Adore

Davestator

This is the perviest game I have ever played. It's also very good though. Bought a physical copy a year or so ago, played it out. I was thinking of selling it with some other games I've completed - and changed my mind. Most games that put sex front and center often end up being mediocre or just plain bad, but this is a solid game. If you like sex, it's icing on the cake.

Re: Nintendo Considering "Various Initiatives" And "Further Enhancements" For The Switch Online Service

Davestator

@GrailUK

Miiverse was so much fun.

Anyway, I just bought a PS5, and earning trophies is just so much more fun....I can't see myself getting another game on switch, when I can earn trophies in the same game on PS5.

Earning "coins" is a good start, but nintendo really needs to get with the program. Miiverse was awesome, and I'd stick around for something like that.

Re: Nintendo Reconfirms Release Windows For Major Upcoming Switch Games

Davestator

@Fizza

I wouldn't be surprised, along with some development interview later how they mention how "the switch hardware wasn't strong enough to match our vision" and/or "how the new chipset architecture allowed to test nintendo's new console while pushing MP4 to the stratosphere" or something like that.

But then again, I live on an alien cloud in my head. And still, nintendo's various little arms and legs start development on the next console as soon as the previous one is released. They're definitely working on games for their next system, regardless if retro or MP4 are involved.

Re: Japanese Charts: Bayonetta 3 Debuts In Second As PlayStation 5 Outsells Switch

Davestator

@DKGXX85

I think it's great that they are buying western studios, and it makes total sense. I like Sony's products, and think they kick ass.

But opinions don't change facts. Sony's American divisions - their European ones, their Chinese ones, are just arms of Sony Conglomerate of Japan, and that's literal fact.

If it's raining outside, and you think that rain the rain is blue or purple, it's still raining outside.

Again, you are entitled to your own opinions, not your own facts.

Re: Japanese Charts: Bayonetta 3 Debuts In Second As PlayStation 5 Outsells Switch

Davestator

@DKGXX85

It's still Japanese owned, and it's still headquartered in Japan. It' still a Japanese company. There are more KFC's in China than in the U.S., but it's still an American company.

And game development is only a small part of Sony's business, which also operates around the world, not just the U.S..

I know it's hard to believe, but the U.S. is not the center of the universe.

The vast majority of Sony employees are not American. They just outsource their game development to the U.S..
