I played it all the time back in the 90's, and I came back with my "nostalgia goggles" off the best I could....and it still holds up. The gameplay it just so remarkably tight, and still razor-sharp even by today's standards. The move set, the pacing, the stage design, the boss patterns. It's still a blast to play. The perfect half-hour video game.
I enjoyed it in the late 80's, and I am enjoying it today. It certainly has its flaws, but I think its positive attributes outweigh the negatives, especially once one gets the controls and quirks down. A lot of licensed games back then were inaccurate to the source material, but in no way does that make it a bad game.
Now, the game being so challenging might be a reason why some people give it a hard time....
I still have this on Wii U. It's a great game. There are a few parts that I could only get through after watching a video though. Some people compare it to Super Mario Bros. 2 and Metroid, but it's kinda its own beast. It's cool to see so many Sunsoft games seeing the light again.
I'm just now finding out about this game, and I've been as sunsoft fan since I was a child. I've played all of the Blaster Master games, and even have Ufouria: The Saga. I definitely want in on this one. I wonder if there are other NES gems from them that I missed out on.
There is lots of good music out, but most of it is underground or lesser-known. Though, I think there are a few exceptions - I really like Lady Gaga and Lizzo, and a few others. Thundercat is good. There are lots of good metal, rock and electronic acts out there, but they likely won't be on Sing.
And yes, older people do complain a lot about music. I'm one of them. Friends tell me I'm stuck in the 80's and 90's, though not always the case, it's often true.
Regardless, I wouldn't be buying a game like this. The developer and publisher probably already know who their audience is, and will likely sell a decent amount.
The art and characters are beautiful. Intriguing looking game. The characters make me think of a situation in which classic Phantasy Star was modernized. I will definitely be putting it on my wish list.
Sunsoft has been killing it with Inti Creates' help. I played through the entirety of Blaster Master Zero 1, 2 and 3 on switch and steam, and they were all so well-done (3 was pretty tough too).
It's good to see that there is still some vocal support for their works on here. I'm cautiously optimistic to what they will be announcing. Hopefully it is something sweet, a revival of a classic or new IP, rather than gatcha or NFT stuff. Maybe a collection or compilation of some of their old NES, Genesis or SNES games? Who knows. We'll find out in a few days.
Exactly. It's very subjective. I played River City Girls into the ground. I have also enjoyed Shredder's Revenge, but on an entirely different level. I'd hardly say it's a better game, because they both do their own thing so well.
It's like a really good band from your youth getting back together for some shows, but charging crazy price for tickets. Gunlord X is a good alternative to try while the publisher hopefully learns not be so greedy.
Not a bad list, though I feel like Journey to Silius and Kung Fu Heroes would be higher on the list if more people played them. It's nice to see some love for the awesome Double Dragon 2, Super Mario Bros. 2, and of Zelda II (all great games imo).
I mean, it is a pretty niche product. And 0.6 percent of a really big number would still technically be a pretty big number. And there probably aren't many of these being made in the first place, but I'm just going to assume that you already knew all of that and just felt like making a dry comment, which is fine. You do you.
Saga is amazing. I'm thinking of starting over, as I recently read the latest issue, and I've been out of the loop for a few years. Never heard of Second Quest until now, and it looks awesome.
Men and women often have different wants, needs and desires. Have you ever walked into the dollar store and seen the selections of cheap romance novels with chiseled, mostly-naked men? Have you read one?
Have you ignored games like Dream Daddy?
Most girls don't care for games like this. Maybe some do. Maybe you could become a developer and make a massage game with sexy, oiled-up muscle dudes.... or better yet, a game with them in fitted suits, because actual women are generally more turned on ny things like that - The game would probably sell like crap, due to a smaller interest in the gaming medium, but you do you.
Okay, I don't mean to be entirely disrespectful. Let me just say that it wouldn't hurt to have a little more perspective, and perhaps not make every little thing into a pseudo-political problem....That said, you do you. I'm just putting it out there.
But anyway.....I'm so excited for this, and Evil Dead. I normally play Japanese, colorful, anime-style games, but I'm holding out for those two on Switch. I hope they pull off a good port. Doom looks great on my switch (I mean for a portable console you have to admit it looks pretty good), so I think it could do well on switch too.
What year are you living in? Nintendo games are often the raunchiest. Xenoblade 2 is a boob-fest, Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild let you cross-dress. A good chunk of the e-shop is made up of echhi and hentai. Mortal Kombat games haven't been censored on a Nintendo console in decades.
Yeah, but you get 13 titles for forty bucks, online play, and a museum....not a small handful of games games split across two bare-bones collections. There's still a massive difference in value, no matter how many straw-mans you pull out.
Let me know when the full collection comes out in a single game. Konami recently set the bar with Cowabunga Collection, and that is the new standard imo.
I think it's great that they tell us about these things ahead of time - because of this, I can wait for a year or two, and likely get all of the goods at once. There might even be a release with all of the goods on one cartridge, which I find optimal.
Music would work great as bonus or alternate tracks. I dug a few of them....the others, not so much.
This was pretty much the nail in the coffin for me getting this game....It's not like I don't have all of them on multiple formats at this point, anyway.
I sort of agree, though Symphony of The Night is just spectacular. It also overlooks the early innovators like the Dragon Slayer / Xanadu series and Blaster Master series, arguably even Section Z with Capcom.
I just don't think they've come up with a better word for the type of game yet. Metroid and Castlevania were just well known for bringing the style to the forefront.
I used to hold a bit of a grievance against the Castlevania series for borrowing so heavily from Metroid...but, they just did it so well.
Those are my two favorite FE games. The story in those is so relevant to what the world is going through today. Also, each stage was so meticulously crafted to only be beatable - without permadeath - by using one's thinking cap and planning carefully.
I'm playing through them right now. The more recent games are very good, but have spoiled me for the difficult. PoR and RD are incredibly unforgiving, yet rewarding, in comparison.
Of course, I'm just speaking for my personal experience here.
Cobra Kai is a great series. I also think the current movie mix could use more over-the-top meat-head macho characters. I grew up in the days of Rambo and Terminator and all that....I think the Cobra Kai creators are good at capturing the essence of the 80's and the philosophies of karate - I think they could apply the same kind of skill to even something a little silly and over-the-top like Duke Nukem.
For anyone fearing it would be too PC, uh like....have you even watched Johnny in Cobra Kai?
The kind of games that I deliberately skipped in the video store in the 80's and 90's, when all of the good games were checked out, so I ended up spending my allowance money on red licorice and ranch flavored corn-nuts and went back to speed-running the games I already had.
Edit:
Holy crap, there were a lot of generic caveman-ooga-booga games back then.
Going to wait a little while in case they release the whole game + DLC on a single cart.....which happened with Streets of Rage 4 and Mr. X.. The game itself looks great though - I'm just going to wait this one out.
I played through Ys VIII and IX on Switch - both very good games...I later went through and purchased the other available Ys games on steam. They are fun little games with good music and quick gameplay.
I haven't tried the Trails series yet, but I'm tempted to once I finish all of the Ys games.
Cool. I hope they outsource development to lots of talented and inspired companies itching to do something with their IP. An actually-good Contra would be amazing. Maybe they can hand that one to Wayforward or another strong developer. TMNT Cowabunga Collection is a great start for them. Hopefully people will support it, and the suits in Konami will see it as a positive sign.
Men in this game also have swim suits, bare nipples and all. They also have incredibly unrealistic proportions. I actually went and played through the game and all of its DLC. It would help to at least familiarize yourself with all of the content before jumping to conclusions.
Also, you're the one making assumptions about other peoples' race, beliefs, and political standings, so I don't think you're in the position to assume that I nor anyone else on this board is ignorant.
@icomma As a classic liberal, I am firmly in support of more in-game cleavage and general sexuality. Sex is part of life. It shouldn't be at the fore-front of everything, but it isn't the devil either.
Also, icomma, this is a Japanese video game we're talking about, and how are you framing this to be all about white men, especially when quite a few male characters were sexualized in this series?
Don't get me wrong, there are strong issues with race and gender and all that going on in the world, but how are you conflating having some sexuality in a video game with white male privilege? That's quite a stretch.
There is some truth to your post, but I think that a lot of people didn't want to have to struggle with the controls in the first place.
If one is constantly confused, and has to spend a great deal of time just getting around the controls, it really gets in the way of the game - and there is a good game beyond those controls. I don't know if it applies to everyone else, but I found myself taking issue with the controls many hours into the game, and I couldn't help but think how great the game would've been with some more time, and a simplified control scheme.
Anyway, I think a smoothed-over version of the game, with some extra polish here and there would be a good idea.
I pass on most square games. They're not bad by any means, just don't get my attention that much. This one, however, looks interesting. I thought I had already heard of every obscure 16-bit rpg, but no.
