Re: Talking Point: What Do You Make Of The Three Big Pokémon Games Coming To Nintendo Switch?

DarkKirby

I certainly couldn't care less about Pokemon Let's Go! and Pokemom Quest. I would tolerate everything else in Let's Go! if it wasn't Kanto again but I have no desire to play through Kanto a 3rd time, 5th time if you include Johto and it's remakes.

And there is no guarantee the 2019 Pokemon game won't follow the trend they started with Let's Go. All they said was "it would be more like X/Y and S/M", that's extremely vague and could mean a lot of things.

Re: Video: Discussing What Took Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate So Long to Come to the West

DarkKirby

Complete Conspiracy Theory.

Capcom originally didn't intend to localize MHXX due to it's lackluster sales in Japan, but Nintendo wanted to bolster their multiplayer library worldwide before the launch of the Nintendo Online Subscription Service, so they incentivised Capcom to release MHGU before Nintendo Online Service launched (perhaps by lowering the risk by lowering the amount of money Capcom gives Nintendo for each sale of MHGU for example).

For anyone who games multiplatform, I can't imagine many people who have already played MHW decided to go back to MHGU.

Re: Soapbox: Let's Give Nintendo Switch Online A Chance Before We Throw It To The Wolves

DarkKirby

I don't support paid online multiplayer in general.

But the issue people have with Nintendo's Online Subscription Service is Nintendo has shown no effort to actually improve their notoriously terrible online in all the time since Nintendo Online Service was announced up until now.

Remember this? No mention of fixing it.
Untitled

Nintendo refuses to allow you to move saves on and off the Switch locally, and their only other option is a paid subscription service. That screams anti-consumer.

Re: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate Hits Switch This August

DarkKirby

@pattybean

If you played World, MHGU will probably feel like a step down for sure, but it's mechanically different as well. The big gimmick in MHGU (and its predecessor, MHG), is the Hunter Arts, essentially "super attacks or skills" that require meter to activate, meter you build through attacking, as well as "Hunter Styles", which alter how each weapon plays a bit depending on which you equip. There are plenty of videos demonstrating them. Here's one for Dual Blades.

Note that MHG and MHGU doesn't feature a story in any sense, so make sure if you're buying it you're into the multiplayer. It really just drops you into the world and says "hunt monsters because it's your job".

Re: Here Are The Participants In The Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018 Tournament

DarkKirby

While it's what I expect, I really hope they don't have a large portion of the tournament as free for alls like the last Smash E3 invitational.

I get that Nintendo wants to show off the "party mode" of the game, and additionally speed up the tournament, but free for alls, while okay to play, are no fun to watch as it's unfair by design. Last time people were even booed for playing it safe because it's what makes sense if you're actually trying to win a free for all.

As a method of understanding the changes to the game (if there are any), which is the most useful information a consumer can gather from extended game play like this, it would be much easier to see the differences in 1 vs 1 matches.

Re: Reaction: What are Your Thoughts on Nintendo Switch Online?

DarkKirby

You should be allowed to freely move your saves on and off the Switch locally instead of them being locked to the system as some poor DRM attempt. The subscription locked cloud saves do nothing to alleviate this.

Nintendo has made no efforts to improve their infamously poor online as they promised they would when they said they were going to start charging for it, but now they're charging for it anyway.

Still no word on fixing the ridiculous 3 way with a smartphone for voice chat. It's either that Nintendo is incomprehensibly incompetent when it comes to online features, or they made it convoluted on purpose because they don't want voice chat in their games but want to be able to say it's available.

Untitled

Let's be real here, most people have smartphones that can run NES games, getting NES games for free is basically not getting anything for your subscription payment.

And for the "it's just $20 a year argument", yes, that's not much, but you're not actually getting anything for that money, you're just paying because Nintendo said you have to now to play online multiplayer.

And I don't support any console charging for their online multiplayer, but at least the ones on PS4 and Xbone work well.

Re: Shuntaro Furukawa Is Nintendo's New President

DarkKirby

@TheMisterManGuy

What you mean by "everyone" was the casual market, but hardcore gamers also playing those same games made for the casual market, which was much less likely to happen the other way around. As I said, as a gamer, to me this just means more games were more boring, and unnecessarily politically correct.

As per your example of other media, I disagree with always marketing to the largest market possible, this doesn't breed quality, when you try to please everyone, you can't truly appeal to anyone. I enjoy movies like Logan and Deadpool, that stepped out of the norm for superhero movies, rather than always riding the line of mediocrity like the Disney Marvel movies (which I now find horribly boring because they keep recycling the same formula). And yes, Disney is a master as "marketing to the widest audience possible", I don't think their movies are better for it, even if they make the most money.

You are blatantly ignoring examples I gave like Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage sessions and just claiming censorship didn't happen.

You say Dual Audio was "under Iwata" but lots of games didn't have Dual Audio under Iwata, Xenoblade Chronicles X as already mentioned.

You keep saying everything that happened under Kimishima was actually Iwata, but there is no evidence of that.

Re: Shuntaro Furukawa Is Nintendo's New President

DarkKirby

@TheMisterManGuy

You say this, but one of Iwata's core strategies for Nintendo was to focus on the casual market, or more than that, to not focus on making products for hardcore gamers, which he seemed to view as a dead end market (please don't cherry pick examples like Bayonetta 2, Iwata viewed hardcore gamers as a cherry on top to the cake that was the casual market).

Some things that happened under Tatsumi Kimishima that I enjoyed, which I don't think would have happened under Iwata.

Return to focusing sales towards gamers, rather than trying to reclaim the lost casual market (and as a gamer I never agreed with the focus on the casual market even when it was making Nintendo tons of money with the Wii, before the entire market abandoned console gaming for smartphones).

Games seem to no longer be heavily censored outside of Japan to "suit local culture". They are supposedly sending censors straight to the original development team, but this is still better than having localized versions of games being heavily censored over the Japanese versions. Censorship disasters like Xenoblade Chronicles X and Tokyo Mirage Sessions aren't happening.

Dual Audio for many games that have a Japanese voice track.

Nintendo seems to no longer be trying to be super politically correct in their games or their marketing (more notably outside of Japan).

Re: UK Schools Want To Bring The Cardboard Creativity Of Nintendo Labo Into The Classroom

DarkKirby

Schools wouldn't need permission from Nintendo to showcase Labo to their students, unless they're asking Nintendo to send them free Switches and Labo sets.

Anyway, how old exactly are these kids we're talking about? Labo constructions are still made of cardboard, hardly something durable enough to be passed around a classroom of kids without being broken.

And it's not like Nintendo invented paper craft, the main difference with Labo is it can incorporate motion controls with the Switch.

Re: Guide: Pokémon Switch: Rumours, Release Date News And Everything Else We Know So Far

DarkKirby

While I love Pokemon, the game mechanics of the main series games have grown super stale to me, I don't have my hopes up, but I really want them to make a huge change to the mechanics of the game so it can really feel fresh.

Also if Game Freak can't write a decent story to go with their amazing character designs they really should outsource the job. It's a terrible shame their amazing looking characters have incredibly shallow personalities who are participants in a terribly written story, and even then many of them don't even get much of a part in that, they are relegated to one role in 1 part of the game and do nothing else.

Re: Random: As The Pokémon Anime Hits 1000 Episodes, One Thing Is Clear: Ash Sucks At Pokémon

DarkKirby

He's a crap trainer because...

Since he's a recycled protagonist, he needs to keep relearning basic things every new region in case the audience just started watching at that region.

While there is nothing wrong with the "power of friendship" trope, the Pokemon anime is very blatant with it, often preaching the benefits of "friendship" over strategy, and Ash's Pokemon in particular becoming more resilient and powerful during battles specifically because he cheers for them and "loves them" more than his opponent's Pokemon. This makes very few of his victories feel earned.

Re: Feature: Here's What Pro Players Want From Super Smash Bros On Switch

DarkKirby

Smash 4 played very similarly to Brawl. I want Smash Switch to feel fresh (preferably with defensive options being less effective and offensive options being more effective).

Blazblue like story mode.

Something less realistic, Tekken 7's Rage Art "Super Attack" system.

Tekken 7 has no meter (most characters don't have meter anyway), but every character has a super move they can use when their health is low enough once per round.

This wouldn't necessarily mean Final Smashes would be replaced, and these Rage Art "Super Attacks" would likely all be more balanced "flashy" single attacks rather than power ups due to being part of every character's base move set.

A way this mechanic could be incorporated into Smash for example, would be you could use a super move once per stock when you are over 100% damage.

These Rage Art "Super Attacks" would likely not be really easy to land even if you have access to it, and would be punishable if you miss it.

Why you ask? Spectacle. Spectacle in fighters is fun.

Re: Could Switch's Non-Compliant USB-C Spec Be To Blame For Third-Party Docks Bricking Consoles?

DarkKirby

So in summery, Nintendo has a universal power port on their system, the main benefit of which is so you are not required to buy Nintendo proprietary products, but the Switch isn't SB-PD spec compliant, meaning you have to buy either Nintendo's official products or products that work only with the Switch and the Switch only, defeating the purpose of having a universal port in the first place.

That doesn't completely explain what Nintendo changed in the Switch's software that caused the problem to arise though when it wasn't a problem before.

Re: Nintendo Comments On Third-Party Docks Bricking Switch Systems

DarkKirby

Can someone explain to me why exactly people are blaming 3rd parties like Nyko when it was Nintendo's software that caused the problem?

Sure, Nintendo is not obligated to make their software work with 3rd party accessories, but this is the first time I've ever heard of software breaking hardware because of a 3rd party cable organizer. 3rd parties make tons of power accessories for phones and I've never heard of some working fine but than breaking the phone because of a software change in the smartphone.

Re: The Fight Rages On As PQube Brings BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle To The EU This Summer

DarkKirby

For people who are unaware, the base price of the game is $50, less than the standard of $60, but 1/2 of the cast is DLC at an additional $20. So technically, it's kind of like if you purchased a normal game at $60, and 1/2 of the cast is an additional $10. Not great, but not as bad as the worse case scenario of the base game being $60 and 1/2 of the cast being an additional $20 - $40. If you want to be completely honest about it, AAA fighting games where you get everything for $60 simply don't exist anymore. That's not in defense of BBCTAG, it's just the reality of the fighting game market. Usually, it's more palatable if the extra characters were at least developed after the game has been sent to printing, but more often than not that's just a less than elaborate ruse in the first place, as it's simply cheaper to have everything developed at the same time and have some things sectioned off as DLC to be released at a later date, because people hate the idea of DLC being content that was cut off of the main development to be sold separately.

The first set of DLC characters are free (Platinum, Orie, and Kanji) for the first 2 weeks after launch, however buying each DLC pack separately even with the first set free will cost more than just buying all the DLC in a bundle.

Now, the other complaint about this game basically being a $70 game, is that it's mostly reused assets, which is true, however, most Blazblue games also share much of their assets (and have more DLC or extra versions on top of that), and still deliver enough new content to be worth the money, at least to me, but I really like the Blazblue characters and the visual novel aspect of the game, as Blazblue has been called the "visual novel that comes with a fighting game", so to me what decides if it's worth the value is the visual novel content.

Re: Review: Kirby Star Allies (Switch)

DarkKirby

The Kirby series has been playing is safe since Super Star, with one diversion with Crystal Shards, which was a good concept with horrible execution.

Since then, at most, even the good Kirby games are usually "Super Star but with a gimmick".

Re: Super Smash Bros. For Switch Is Coming This Year, And It's Got Inklings

DarkKirby

I don't need to purchase Smash 4 a 3rd time if this is just an "enhanced port".

I had fun with Brawl, but frankly, when I played Smash 4, it just felt like I was playing Brawl again, and I've already played that game tons already. I want the game's mechanics to feel fresh in some way, and aren't interested in a game that plays like Brawl again.

@Superzone13

They were intentionally ambiguous on whether it was an enhanced Smash 4 port or Smash 5, leading most people to think it's a port.

So either it's a Smash 4 port, or Nintendo completely failed to clearly convey that it was supposed to be Smash 5.

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

DarkKirby

Yes, giving people the "reward" of having the opportunity to give Nintendo even more money is a scam of a reward system, this has been obvious to anybody with common sense for a while now.

And they even have the points expire quickly as an encouragement to buy more games quickly, to get more points, which are again only really useful for giving Nintendo more money.

Re: Hands On: The Future Of Gaming Is Cardboard, Thanks To Nintendo Labo

DarkKirby

It's like Google Cardboard but for everything except putting it on your face.

It's an interesting solution to having games with unique gimmicks not requiring people to shell out tons of money on accessories that only work with 1 or 2 games.

I imagine the handheld cardboard accessories would be rather uncomfortable though.

Re: Indie Dev Talks About Having Switch Proposals Turned Down By Nintendo Five Times

DarkKirby

Nintendo of Japan at least seems to be making a conscious effort to rid themselves as the "for casuals" reputation Nintendo was pushing during the Wii era, so it's strange that Nintendo of America didn't get the memo.

As for indie games in general, I personally wouldn't care if the eShop was a wasteland of whatever games as long as user reviews were in clear sight and the store was easy to navigate with a good search engine, you know, like Steam.

Re: Soapbox: What The Upcoming Pokémon Switch RPG Can Learn From Recent Pokémon Games

DarkKirby

This is a soapbox, and you are entitled to your opinion, but I disagree about the "point" of Pokemon which you pose. I like story elements in games, and want Pokemon games to have a good story. The problem for me isn't that the story exists when it shouldn't because the focus should be elsewhere, but that story in main series Pokemon games is consistently bad. I want more focus on characters, but I want characters to be interesting in more ways than just their design. To me it's always been a shame that Pokemon has so much characters with interesting and likable designs but they are given shallow personalities with no development because the game gives them almost no screen time. If Game Freak is unable to write a good story with interesting characters themselves, they should outsource the job to another developer.

Also, your comparison of Mega Evolution to Transformers is flawed, Mega Evolution is more like specifically the anime portrayal of Digimon Mega Forms for the protagonist's Digimon, and that's if we're keeping it to "monsters". It's a temporary powered up form that exists in many forms of media.

I am not nostalgic, and I have no particular love for "old Pokemon". I welcome the series moving forward (honestly, Z-Moves are a step back from Mega Evolutions). Honestly, I would like the mechanics to go further than a new gimmick each Gen, and would like the series to at least change to action turn based combat (like Paper Mario), and/or have decisions on your turn be timed so it feels more like you are in a real battle where you have to make decisions on the fly.

Re: Pokémon GO Receives New iPhone Exclusive Features

DarkKirby

@AlexOlney

There isn't a technical reason most Android Phones can't do this, it's just easier to make changes to software for iPhones because the OS is much more uniform compared to the larger variety of Android OS's which have been modified by the phone manufacturers.

Of course, because it's technically possible for Android phones to do doesn't mean Niantic will do it.

Also, actually using the AR Camera for Pokemon go murders your battery, this feature is neat but only practical when trying to catch a Pokemon that is really far away from your screen and curve balls can't hit properly because of the narrow screen.

Re: Weirdness: When The Masses Get Hold of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Strange Things Happen

DarkKirby

Yeah, animals in Pocket Camp are almost always using an activatable item in the camp, if you remove all activatable items except the ones you want them to use, they will have no choice to use those specific ones.

They don't even need a path to the item, when you enter your camp they can be using a non accessible item like a chair inside a cage.

Although when I saw people with their camps arranged like this I thought they were just trying to make their animals easily accessible instead of being randomly all over their camp.
