Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Needs to Learn Lessons From Its NES Mini Mistakes

DarkKirby

Here's the solution.

Stop dripping out games on the Virtual Console and just release all of them on every console that can run them.

Lower the freaking prices of these ancient games. Realistically, you can get these games for free and run them on an emulator on either your PC or phone, making the games hard to get and pricing them way over their worth is only cutting into your own profits and upsetting to consumers who will than look to get what they want elsewhere.

As Gabe Newell from Valve famously said, "Piracy Is a Service Problem". Sorry, it's not 1990, the "my way or the highway" approach doesn't work, I don't care how legally in the right you are. Refusing to to give consumers what they want conveniently at at convenient price is just forfeiting money and hurting customer relations.

Re: Check Out These Limited Time Micro SD Card Deals From Amazon

DarkKirby

@JaxonH

If you look at the design of most portable devices that use SD/microSD cards, even Nintendo's past portable consoles, the SD/microSD card is enclosed and protected, because it's small, expensive, and valuable (because of the data it holds).

It's incredibly unusual to have the microSD card exposed in such a way as it is on the Switch.

Re: Round Up: Yooka-Laylee's Scores Are In, And Critics Appear Divided

DarkKirby

@Shiryu

Well, one of the biggest issues with Mighty No. 9 was they promised Megaman, and did something else, trying to "revolutionize" the Megaman formula rather than recreate it, and failed.

The criticisms surrounding Yooka-Laylee on the other hand (by the current reviewers), seem to be that it is just like Banjo-Kazooie, but that's not good enough anymore compared to modern games.

So if you're looking for Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee delivers, if you're looking for a game that stands up next to modern AAA games, look elsewhere (according to the current reviews).

Re: Video: See Sonic Forces At Its Best in Official Gameplay Footage

DarkKirby

Well, it looks like a 3D Sonic game with nice graphics which is fine (I'm not part of that "all 3D Sonic games are bad" group), but it's not really enough footage to really determine much.

Sonic 2006 and Sonic Unleashed looked fine enough, it wasn't until people had a chance to play them that the large amount of mechanical problems became apparent.

Re: Some People Are Doing Naughty Things In Fire Emblem Heroes

DarkKirby

Have you encountered any issues with other players breaking rules in the game?

It's not actually possible to interact with other players other than fighting against their AI teams in the Arena though.

If I had to harbor a guess it's probably people modifying their game data to give themselves free resources like Orbs. They made FE: Heroes require being online to play even though the entire game is played offline except for fighting random AI teams from other players, which you can only do 3 times a day anyway.

Re: Nintendo Switch Teardown Images Pop Up Online

DarkKirby

I know the Switch is priced less than top end tablets (but it's not like the Switch is top end technology itself), but for most tablets the battery can be almost 1/2 of the space the tablet itself takes up (spread long and flat along the tablet to balance the weight), so that's what I would consider a " hulking beast of a battery", unless the battery in the Switch is really thick (which can't be seen from the picture), but that would severely throw off the balance of the Switch since it's on one side of it, so I doubt that's the case.

The reason I bring this up is the Switch's 2.5 hour estimated portable battery life that is expected for most AAA games is one of the Switch's notable faults.

Also, the fact that the battery is completely shoved to the side of the device means there was even less of a reason to have it be non removable and require it be a paid maintenance service from Nintendo to have it replaced.

Re: Nintendo Will Replace Your Dead Switch Battery, At A Cost

DarkKirby

@nab1

I have, the battery in things like tablets are often almost as big as the tablet itself, but in the past Nintendo has kept the battery secure and prevented the battery from falling out with a screwed on back plate, I don't see why that couldn't have been done again.

Given, while still not ideal, I would trade a removable battery for water and shock proofing, but I don't think the Switch will have either.

Re: Official Nintendo Switch Technical Specifications Have Been Shared

DarkKirby

Not the kind of specs people wanted to know about.

There is some good news, it says there is a combination headphone/microphone jack, so you are still going to be able to have voice chat through the game while also hearing the in game audio, even if voice chat still doesn't work without the nonsensical paid smartphone app system.

Re: Nintendo Will Replace Your Dead Switch Battery, At A Cost

DarkKirby

Unless the Switch is waterproof and shockproof (to a degree), which some smartphones still accomplish with a removable battery, I don't see a real reason why the Switch doesn't have a removable battery.

I hope this wasn't an intentional decision so they can charge for maintenance, like Apple does.

Re: Talking Point: Is the Nintendo Switch a Handheld or Console? Does it Matter?

DarkKirby

It's hardware capabilities compared to the competition combined with how it's being marketed as usable as a portable makes it a handheld. If the Switch succeeds, expect Nintendo to phase out the 3DS to encourage more Switch sales. If the rumored Pokemon Stars is only on the Switch as is expected, that process has already begun.

But it's being marketed as "home console" to justify the AAA home console price they're applying to many of the Switch games.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Confirms that Breath of the Wild Will Not Support a Japanese Dub Over English Subtitles

DarkKirby

It's strange how Nintendo takes away options as a series becomes more popular.

When they thought Fire Emblem was a failure they had less censorship and dual audio.

When they discovered Awakening was actually a massive success they started making much more aggressive localization decisions to the series and took away dual audio.

Either they think if a series is popular, it'll sell regardless of if they (Nintendo) spend the small amount of money for extra options, or they think more options will confuse the poor casual who can't handle them.

Re: Talking Point: Let's Explore What Could Be Done with HD Rumble on the Nintendo Switch

DarkKirby

A lot of these suggestions don't seem to be limited to the new HD Rumble, just Rumble in general.

From what I've heard from people who have tried it at the demo events, all they think HD Rumble is is the controller has 3 points of Rumble separated along it rather that 1. That sounds pretty situational, especially with more traditional games where the Joy Cons will be attached to something, like the Switch itself.

One suggestion I heard was was interesting, was for more traditional games, when you are taking damage on one side of your body in a first person game or something, only that side of the Joy Con would shake since each of the Joy Cons that form one controller are technically 2 separate sources of rumble.

Another one I heard was when playing a game like Mario Kart, if you go off road, the only one side of your controller would shake if only 1/2 of your kart's wheels was off road, so you could feel of you were straying off of the main road.
