Re: Soapbox: It's Nintendo's Job To Make Switch A Success, Not EA's, Ubisoft's Or Capcom's

DarkKirby

@JaxonH

Of course, alot of this is easier to swallow given the forward strides they're taking with region free and games tied to online Nintendo accounts.

Has it been confirmed somewhere that Nintendo is finally tying digital purchases to your account rather than the console? Region free and digital purchases being tied to your account is something everyone else does, and something Nintendo should have done a long time ago, but I haven't seen news on Nintendo confirming they are finally putting an end to tied to console digital purchases.

Re: Soapbox: It's Nintendo's Job To Make Switch A Success, Not EA's, Ubisoft's Or Capcom's

DarkKirby

Yes, that's quite obvious, 3rd party companies have no obligation to take significant risk and invest in the Switch just to try and make the Switch a success, it's Nintendo's job to show 3rd parties why the Switch is worth supporting.

If the Switch fails, it'll be because of Nintendo's own decisions for it.

Oddly enough, Nintendo's is handling the Switch as if it's a forgone conclusion that it's going to be a success, despite the Wii U failing before it. Rather than make buying a Switch as appealing as possible right out of the gate, they seem to be intentionally nickle and diming people right from the start all over the place. They are almost acting like Microsoft did with the Xbone reveal, so incredibly confident that their customers would accept anything and everything because they (Microsoft) held a majority of the market at that time, that they made a bunch of decisions that were intentionally anti consumer, and anti gamer, prompting many 360 owners to buy a PS4 instead. I think it was about a year after the Xbone's release before Microsoft admitted fault and backpedaled on many of their anti consumer decisions, but by that point the PS4 already had a hold of the market.

Re: Talking Point: Considering the Paid Online Service for the Nintendo Switch

DarkKirby

That Nintendo is asking for a subscription free is in no way evidence that they plan to drastically improve the quality of their online.

The reason (at least one of them) why people are so upset is Nintendo has always notoriously been known to have terrible online, far worse than on Microsoft and Sony consoles. Their terrible online isn't just routed in connection speed, but online and communication features are often bad to non existent. The communication features available in most Nintendo games are consistently so bad it's highly probably that Nintendo prevents communication between players as an intentional decision.

The fact that the the Switch Online Subscription Service is proposing to only offer 1 NES or SNES game per month, at which point that 1 game is taken away when the month is up, as an incentive to using the subscription service, is frankly insulting when compared to what Microsoft and Sony offer for their subscription service, and the much larger number of good multiplayer games available on those consoles.

As far as we know, there are still no plans to start linking digital purchases to your account rather than the console.

This, combined with the fact that a connection to the subscription service app on a smartphone is required for voice chat to work at all on the Switch is further evidence that shows people that Nintendo still has no idea what they are doing when it comes to online.

The only thing Nintendo could possibly do to not make this service complete ludicrous is if they make it very, very, very, cheap, but at that point, why charge for it at all? If they are going to make the subscription service incredibly cheap, they might as well have not made online play require a subscription service, and have free online play as an attractive feature over their competition.

Really though, regardless if you agree with it or not, graphical power matters to many gamers, and is a selling point to them. There is no disadvantage to the consumer for having a powerful console, there are disadvantages to having a weak one. The only party that benefits from a weak console is the console's manufacturer.

Re: Pachter Says Switch is the Easiest of the Big Three to Develop For

DarkKirby

The fact that the Switch is likely the least powerful of the systems already makes it the easiest, and cheapest, to develop for, if the game is made natively or exclusively for the Switch. One of the biggest draws to making games for lower end hardware is much smaller development cost.

What this means for multiplatform games though, I think is harder to say. The Wii for example, was so far behind the 360 and PS3, that straight ports were considered too difficult (luckily for Nintendo though, the Wii sold so well, publishers were willing to put in the money and time for heavily altered ports).

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thinks Nintendo Should Have Made Minecraft

DarkKirby

This is some massive hindsight bias.

That said, one of the greatest, if not the greatest, contributing factor to Minecraft's success is all the youtube videos and streams of it, something done most easily on PC, and something Nintendo to this day is adamantly against allowing players to do for their games unless they get express permission. Additionally, many Minecraft players like playing the game with player made mods and texture packs, and its multiplayer has an open and nonrestrictive chat, something Nintendo is also against giving players the ability to do. Minecraft would never have reached its level of success under Nintendo because of their restrictive company policies.

It's not too surprising there was originally a follower system in the game because people in the game often talk about you and your "partner" and refer to the Pokemon in the first slot by name as your "partner".

Hopefully it will be implemented in the rumored 1.5 version Pokemon Stars.

Re: Rumour: New Version of Pokémon Sun And Moon, Pokémon Stars, Is Coming to the Nintendo Switch

DarkKirby

As much as I would like holding out on purchasing a Switch until I'm sure of Nintendo's business direction with it, a Pokemon game, even a 1.5 game, would by the big sales push the Switch would need to get off the ground, and I really, really would like to see the ancient 3DS hardware ditched.

However, I have my doubts that a 1.5 version on the Switch would show much improvement over the 3DS version, creating new models for everything to showcase the new hardware would likely be considered too much work.

Re: Poll: The Wii U is Four Years Old, But What Is Its Legacy?

DarkKirby

Which of these things is your favourite part of the Wii U?
It's "game library" for pretty much every gaming system, not that any hardware the Wii U had stood out regardless.

Ironically, that results in the best and worst part of the Wii U being its game library.

The Wii U is Four Years Old, But What Is Its Legacy?
Remember that time when Nintendo tried to repeat the success of the Wii and fell flat on its face?

Re: Editorial: Cutting Edge Visual Splendour vs. 60 Frames-Per-Second - Between a Rock and a Hard Place

DarkKirby

@CrazedCavalier

The issue is even on more powerful hardware, many publishers prioritize having the game look great over the game running great, because they can advertise a game's "amazing graphics" where as you can't really advertise "game runs consistently at 60 FPS" because a game is already expected to perform well, even if it doesn't. Additionally, there probably are people who don't even know what frames per second are, where as everyone knows when something "looks pretty".

PC only can often overcome this because it's possible to use superior hardware to overcome a game that was developed to have better graphics at the cost of poorer performance on console hardware.

But yes, Nintendo, often with the least powerful hardware, often has to choose between one or the other and have it be noticeable more often than others.

Re: Editorial: The Wii U Has Been Nintendo's Lowest Selling Home Console; It Deserved Better

DarkKirby

Why did the Wii U deserve better? It, or more accurately Nintendo, deserves exactly what happened to the Wii U based on the decisions they made for the system. And I own a Wii U myself.

The Wii U has struggled to such a degree that its entire generation could pass with a large section of Nintendo's target consumer base barely knowing it exists.

This was basically the biggest problem the Wii U had from the very beginning, it was designed and marketed to recapture the non gaming casual audience they lost that made the Wii a success, but the non gaming casual audience stopped caring about the Wii because they moved on to smartphones and stopped caring about console games period. Nintendo was willing to sacrifice the consumer base it did have, Nintendo fans and gamers, in an attempt to win the lottery again like they did with the Wii. Every gamer knew what the Wii U was, but most gamers didn't want it because it was clearly not designed or marketed for them.

Re: Generation II Pocket Monsters Found in Pokemon GO Update Code

DarkKirby

Looks like the leak that Gen 2 would arrive by December was accurate.

Although I've stopped playing Pokemon GO already.

I might come back to capture a Gardevoir (my favorite Pokemon) when Gen 3 is released for novelty's sake.

Last I checked they're making it harder to level again which is going to make the game even less pleasant.

Re: Poll: Are You Excited About the Mini NES?

DarkKirby

As much as I am a fan of some of Nintendo's IPs I'm basically not effected by nostalgia.

I don't look back at 8 bit games and think "those were the good old days!".

I look at the game we have now and think they're for the most part obviously better.

Re: Level-5 Planning To Support Nintendo Switch But Won't Have Any Games At Launch

DarkKirby

No publisher or developer is going to straight say they've decided to not support the Switch. At this point, pretty much everyone has pledged their "support" for the Switch.

Every publisher is doing the same thing, say they are going to support the Switch, see if the Switch actually sells enough to be worth supporting, than start developing games for it if it does sell enough.

No publisher or developer feels obligated to make a game for the Switch no matter what unless Nintendo directly pays them for it, and they are in no way obligated to make a game for the Switch no matter what just because they've formerly pledged their support for it.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Reportedly Include 4GB of RAM

DarkKirby

@DanteSolablood

I wasn't originally comparing to PC, I was originally comparing to the other consoles, the PS4 and Xbone, I was replying to someone who used PC specs as a basis for comparison.

That said, the other consoles, as I previously mentioned, both have 8GB of RAM and reserve a little less than half of that for the OS. The idea that the Switch won't have an OS at all, or an OS that is so minimal that it uses much, much, much less RAM than its competitors to leave a lot of that 4GB for the games, is unlikely if you ask me.

@Dirty0814

RAM isn't as important for games as the processor or graphics card no, but it's still an important part of the system, and at the end of the day, more RAM is better, the less restrictions placed in publishers, the better it is for the consumer.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Reportedly Include 4GB of RAM

DarkKirby

@GraveLordXD

Yes, but keep in mind the "recommend" specs for PC games is usually just the minimum required to run the game, not the optimal amount, and these days the suggested amount of RAM in your PC for games is at least 8GB to ensure you have no issues in your games related to your RAM, and many gaming PCs just have 16GB of RAM because RAM isn't all the expensive (comparatively to the processor and graphics card).

Re: Nintendo Encouraged by Third-Party Interest in the Switch

DarkKirby

"Interest" doesn't really amount to anything. Every video game publisher is "interested" in a business opportunity if it can make them money. Publishers were "interested" in the Wii U too, when it was clear the Wii U wasn't working out, they lost interest.

It's up to Nintendo to convince publishers it's worth their time and effort to make an investment into the Switch.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Reportedly Include 4GB of RAM

DarkKirby

A lot of people here are saying they don't understand how much RAM is enough RAM, or perhaps what RAM even is.

For comparison, both the PS4 and Xbone have 8GB of RAM (and the PS4's RAM is faster), with a little less than 1/2 of that RAM reserved for the OS.

4GB is the standard amount of RAM found in high end smartphones.

More RAM means less lag and more things can load into and happen in the game at the same time.

Re: Monster Hunter XX (Double Cross) Heading to 3DS in Japan

DarkKirby

While I'm not surprised, didn't the head developer actually say in a live interview that there wouldn't be a "G" version of Monster Hunter X (the Japanese name fore the game)? Although I guess he technically didn't lie, because the game isn't called "previous game title + G" like it usually is, it's instead being called "previous game title + X", but their technically the same thing.
