Re: Review: Batman - The Telltale Series (Switch)

DarkKirby

For people who have not played it yet let me tell you this.

In my opinion "Batman - The Telltale Series" has the most interesting interpretation of the Batman characters since the original. Telltale was not afraid of telling a different Batman story, and veering away from the source material. The story also uniquely extensively explores Bruce as a character and doesn't just use Bruce as an excuse to play as Batman, or tell Batman's story. This game is very much about Bruce, who is also Batman, not Batman who happens to be Bruce.

Re: Random: Nineties Kids, Rejoice - Tamagotchis Are Making A Comeback

DarkKirby

I would be surprised if there wasn't a Tamagotchi type thing on smartphones already, which seems like the most convenient way to play it if you really still want a virtual pet.

I remember when the battery died on my Digimon and I was super upset because back then when the battery died you lost all the game's memory.

Re: Ultra Street Fighter II Had A Better UK Debut Than Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite

DarkKirby

Some, but not all, of the reasons Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite didn't sell well.

Disastrous first impression at E3 2017.

Ugly art style which attempts to be "cinematic".

Ugly character models for many of the iconic characters. They "fixed" Chun-Li because people were complaining about it to them every day but many other characters still look terrible.

Terrible demo which further accentuates that the story is corny and cringe inducing, but attempting to play it straight. Lack of opportunity during the demo to really test out game play.

Dragon Ball FighterZ, another team based fighter, was announced the same week to further make MvC: I look terrible by comparison since that game looks like there is real passion behind the development.

Blazblue Cross Tag Battle announced at EVO 2017 giving people even more team based fighter options besides MvC: I.

Nobody except Disney cares about their petty feud with 20th Century Fox for the movie rights to their Marvel characters, they just want the game to have the characters they like. Exclusion of the characters which 20th Century Fox owns the movie rights to doesn't sit will with anyone who cares about those characters or franchises, or even the MvC series for which those character have been a part of for a long time.

When asked about missing characters like the X-men a Capcom representative said "characters are just functions (as in the characters themselves don't matter)" and a Disney representative said "do people even know who the X-men are anymore?", while obvious question dodges because they can't just say the Disney executives won't allow them to be in the game, is nonetheless extremely insulting to everyone's intelligence.

Like almost everything else Disney does with Marvel these days outside of the comics themselves, MvC: I looks like just another attempt to advertise for their movies, where "the real money is made".

Re: Review: Pokkén Tournament DX (Switch)

DarkKirby

Is there an online ranked mode for the 3 vs 3, and if not can you at least play 3 vs 3 in online lobbies?

And how are the online lobbies (being called "group matches" in this game apparently). Is it as robust as other online fighters? Is there chat in any form within the lobbies?

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Direct?

DarkKirby

It was fine, but there was nothing shown that was really impressive or an amazing surprise. The biggest surprise was Doom and Wolfenstein being available on the Switch at all, which isn't bad, but those games have been revealed for other platforms already.

Buff Dedede was pretty funny I guess.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

DarkKirby

@TheMisterManGuy

If $80 for 200 GB is "dirt cheap" is relative to the person paying for it, but that still doesn't change that it's the most expensive type of portable memory card to ask the consumer to buy, or that Nintendo put almost no memory in the Switch itself and unloaded that cost onto the consumer instead of paying for it themselves.

The Switch is a story of an "a la carte" system with lots of costs unloaded onto the consumer. You need to buy a power bank because the battery isn't large enough if you want to use it as a portable, you need to buy your own memory because the system itself has almost none (and as this article is about, they unload the costs of their expensive cartridges onto the publishers, who in turn unload it onto the consumer, who in turn either need to pay more for the game or buy extra memory), you need to buy another controller if you want to comfortably play while the Switch is docked because most people don't want 4 buttons instead of a joystick on the left (and there is still no solution for this for the joycon itself), extra docks are $80 (the one's sold by Nintendo) for what amounts to a plastic cable organizer.

They didn't even bundle in the hardware concept game 1 2 Switch with the system like they did Wii Sports and asked people to pay $50 for it instead.

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

DarkKirby

Look, you have to use solid state memory for a portable system, but passing that extra cost onto the publishers, who in turn pass that cost to the consumer, is stupid. Either Nintendo has to find a way to reduce the cost of their Switch cartridges, or they need to eat that cost themselves until they do.

Their choice to have the Switch have almost no memory of its own and use microSD cards doesn't help, as Nintendo is passing the cost onto the consumer yet again, and microSD cards are the most expensive type of card based memory because it's the smallest.

Re: Guide: Pokémon GO Raids, Bosses, Rewards And Winning Tactics

DarkKirby

How to beat Raid Bosses in Pokemon GO

Live in a populated city.

???

PROFIT!

Seriously though, there needs to be an in game way to alert people that someone wants to attempt a Raid (many people have suggested a beacon should appear over the Raid when someone wants help), and your Raid Pass shouldn't be consumed until you enter the battle, or better yet, unless you actually complete the Raid.

The idea that you have to spend your Raid Pass to just check if anyone else is attempting the Raid is ludicrous.

Re: Nintendo Outlines Upcoming Special Events for Fire Emblem Heroes

DarkKirby

@RGnsd

The thing is, any unit that doesn't have a ranged attack and/or isn't on a horse, needs Distance Counter, unless you're Azura, who has both Triangle Adept built in and Sing (really, Triangle Adept is just the bonus that makes her better than every other Sing/Dance user).

You can't be an effective unit in FE Heroes without any of those qualities, you just end up stuck in the back of the map, unable to reach anything. You mention Ike, but Ike as Distance Counter built into his weapon, it's what makes infantry units like him viable.

And like I said before, Lucina buffs specifically non mages (and well, non dragons as well), and the meta game is built around mostly ranged attackers, who are mostly mages. So she's only really useful for people who don't use any mages because they completely refuse to conform to the meta.

Re: Nintendo Outlines Upcoming Special Events for Fire Emblem Heroes

DarkKirby

Lucina looks bad (and she's the only character of the 4 I care about).

Buffs specifically non mage units in a game dominated by mages?

And any non ranged blue without distant counter inevitably competes with Azura, who is arguably the most useful unit in the entire game.

That 1 free pull means Arena is going to be filled with Horse Emblem with Horse Bow Lyn now (and it's already filled with Horse Emblem, now Horse Emblem is even better).

Re: Video: Nintendo's Latest Switch Promo Really Crams In Reasons To Own One

DarkKirby

Untitled

At least most of the commercial isn't soccer moms and grandpas playing around the couch together.

Really though, why would you play your Switch on your balcony instead of in your house, or meet up with friends outdoors to play the Switch together while sharing the small screen? If you're going to meet up with friends to play the Switch just meet together at someone's house.

Re: Nicalis Would Love To Bring Night Trap To Nintendo Switch

DarkKirby

Let's make something clear to people who don't know anything about Night Trap.

The game is hardly graphic in nature, there are women in nightwear and B movie horror effects. The most "adult" thing in the game is probably that your unit is called S.C.A.T. for "Sega Control Attack Team" because the writers didn't know there was another meaning for that abbreviation.

The whole controversy was just some nonsense started by politicians about something that wasn't widely accepted or understood (video games) by most of the public so they could get some easy publicity about how they're "protecting the children" without much resistance.

Night Trap isn't a good game. Unless you live under a rock, or are really young and didn't do any research, most people are fully aware of this. Most people who buy Night Trap aren't doing so because they expect it to be fun, they just want to experience what the most controversial game of it's time was like.

And there really isn't a reason they shouldn't be able to on the Switch. It's not my cup of tea, but Night Trap is famous for what it is even though it's not technically good, and there are people who want to play it for that.

Nintendo refusing to allow Night Trap on the Switch is them cultivating and clinging to their "we're for kids" reputation that they think is so very important to their financial success, with decisions like making voice chat so much of a hassle that nobody will use it in the first place. And I repeat, while Night Trap is famous for how controversial it was, the game isn't actually graphic, the controversy was based on nonsense.
