EVO is one of the biggest fighting game tournaments in the world, bringing together the best of the best across several different fighting games and franchises. Super Smash Bros. has long since been a staple of the tournament, specifically the latest entry and Melee. EVO 2018 will be taking place this summer from 3rd August to 5th August, and to get some hype moving, the lineup for this year’s competition was just revealed.
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Melee will both be making an appearance, returning from last year’s competition. It comes as little surprise, of course, but it’s still exciting to see Nintendo get some representation. There was a fan movement to have ARMS feature, too, but it evidently wasn’t deemed popular enough for a top slot.
What do you think? Will you be watching EVO this year? Do you think Melee still deserves to have a spot? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Hardly surprising. WiiU Smash is good and melee still has a fan base.
Good times to come
Melee was the Smash that got me into that series
Looking forward to both Smash games again this year. Also excited to see DBFZ there.
Weird that BB Crosstag is there, which releases not long before EVO, yet neither MvC or KoF are present.
@PLATINUM7 I was about to say that, okay, MvC Infinite is not great so I can understand the reason for not being there but KoF, that is a surprise.
The game is fantastic, I wish SNK would port the latest one to the Switch so I could play it on my way to work.
Yawn... Skipped that one last year; guess I'll skip two this year. I'm not hating. I know there's a dedicated fan base for them. I liked them awhile ago, but now... eh, it's like they've worn out their welcome, for my tastes. That's why I'm interested to watch DBFZ and see what comes from it. BBCT... not sure about that. I'll watch it, but seems a bit rushed to include it in EVO right after it comes out. To bad there's no Mahvel this year, but we all know it's the disappointment MvCI's fault. 🤷♂️ Oh well~. Love EVO either way. Always an entertaining event.
Love Smash Bros competitively. I find the game way more interesting than any other fighting games. It's just so much fun to watch.
I expected no less than two Smash games.
Would be a good time to reveal smashbros switch before the event.
What? No comment about Smash not being on the Switch?
It's my time to shine: I'm really impatient to see more of Metroid Prime 4!
Dammit, I blew it...
@icerzerocool Yeah, agreed. I don't really like e-sports, but Smash (especially 4) is just something else.
Eh... No.
If ARMS or Chibi Kickboxing games (K-1), sign me in.
@Anti-Matter lol
There needs to be a minimum amount of time between a game's release and the actual event. Not to discredit the BB crowd, but there's a bunch of new characters (and I'm also not sure what the DLC release schedule is because I don't follow BB), and sometimes we need time to shake out any bugs and/or exploits that may occur because of them.
Also, it's a crime KoF isn't there! Even after last year's amazing finals, it's a shame.
I sure as heck can't stand watching Smash Bros 'two foxes vibrating each other off stage' Melee, but all the other confirmed games I'm looking forward to.
Kind of sad there's no KoF or Pokken. The latter's fanbase is so dedicated to being taken seriously that I really want to see them succeed. And Pokken is fun to watch, and its ludicrously balanced character roster makes it so that you see a lot of variety.
I know this game is kinda bad compared to most fighting games but why isn’t marvel infinite on there?? No evo is complete without a marvel game imo but it’s a shame it didn’t live up to the hype. 😞
Melee still has a very strong following, and people still deem it to be "the best" (though after playing hours of Smash 4, I'd beg to differ). So yeah, I think it'll be included in competitive play for years to come. If they didn't include it, people would go crazy.
Don't watch stuff like this anymore though. More power to the folks that do.
Kind of a slap in the face to ARMS pros, honestly. It takes quite a lot of time and effort to become truly skilled at ARMS. I can't deny it's not as popular as Smash, but at least it's something new and interesting. How do they know it won't be a big hit if they don't give it a chance?
I really wanted to go to EVO this year but I'm so behind on my training and I am going to PASS Summit this year. Sigh. Next year.
@DarkKirby This made me laugh way more than it should have. Still it is kinda surprising and hilarious that DBFZ is taking MvCi's spot at evo this year
I have never watched this tournament. But am always impressed whenever I read about it.
