A brand new feature called AR+ has been made available for Pokémon GO, allowing trainers to experience "even more realistic Pokémon encounters". You'll need to be running the game on iOS 11 on the iPhone 6s or newer models to make use of it, however.
This enhanced augmented reality improves the functions available to players when catching Pokémon using their phone's camera. The Pokémon are now fixed to a specific point in space, allowing you to walk right up to them and see their true size in comparison to your current surroundings. If you get too close to one of the lovely critters, though, they'll run away - you'll need to be careful to be successful.
An awareness meter will appear next to the Pokémon to indicate how close it is to fleeing the scene. If it does run away, you can try tapping on the tall grass nearby to hopefully make the Pokémon reappear. If you manage to get close enough you'll receive an Expert Handler bonus which will award more XP and Stardust than usual.
If you are one of the lucky ones capable of trying this new feature, will you be braving the cold to take some close-up AR shots of your favourite creatures? Let us know in the comments below.

I literally just switched to Android.
@AlexOlney Well that was foolish
I’ve stuck with Apple devices for the sake of synergy and convenience, but I’ve never considered myself loyal to the brand. A feature like this isn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but it might be enough for me to dust off the app and give it a go again.
@AlexOlney don't worry, I did as well and don't regret it. It's crazy how much more I can do on my Note 8 than I could ever do haha..... And it will probably be moved to Android later.
@Ttimer5 What exactly besides the pen input does the Note 8 do that the iPhone X does not?
Needs to be actual functionality, not something like "I can change the look of my buttons on screen".
Also iPhone X is getting pen input soon as well.
My Pixel 2XL can easily and readily do the same AR tricks. What gives?
@Steven_the_2nd Well damn if iphone is getting the pen then that settles everything. It is now on par with everything android. You read it here live on NintendoLife.
Anyone know if this is on iPhone SE?
@magnumc500 I would say the iOS is definitely on par with Android Oreo. Functionality wise, besides the pen bit I the Note 8.
No need to be a complete weener about it. I was asking a genuine question. Features wise both OS have the same functionality. One phone or another may have an extra feature but that is phone specific.
Hardware wise, The iPhone X has a much better screen than any Android tho, also the back camera is better as well. I have to give it to the Pixel for the front facing camera, but that is just software that can upgraded without a new device.
@Henbush Should work since the iPhone SE has 6S internals.
@Steven_the_2nd let's see.... (I'm not trying to get this into argument or whatever) I can work on PDFs, download items and use them right away not need to plug into a computer, no restrictions on the home screens, fingerprint sensor , nfc reader & writer, choose the apps that you want to work with what your doing, split screen using 2 apps at once, expandable storage (for my music and photos),
@Ttimer5 Android also allows you to turn your phone into a Hot Spot. This is phone specific, but that's a benefit of an OS that is open to letting other developers make devices not just one company like Apple. This makes other device makers to thrive to design new features to keep up with the times.
@magnumc500 Do you mean WiFi hotspot? apologies if you meant something else but if you do, iphones have done that for a long, long time.
Also @Ttimer5 outside of expandable memory and split screen all of that can be done in iphone (sometimes through apps, sure) (although I may have missed what you meant with the plugging into PC part, I've had iphones for 6 years and no PC so I have no idea what you'd even do that for)Or are you just saying Android did them first?
Guess it's time for me to go back to an Apple Store to compare with my device. I've been there quite a few models ago so surely some stuff has changed but I've never walked out with my mind changed even with help from the store rep, since I go early to avoid the lines there for all the tech help or issues they do. I wish they had a separate store for that.
@AlexOlney Yo you should totally do a comparison of Apple and Android. May not be as Videogame relevant as other topics but now that Nintendo is making apps that works on both OS it would make an interesting read. Not to mention so many other videogame companies that make apps as well.
@PorllM
*iPhone don't write to nfc....
**Download items.... You can't download ring tones or songs on the iPhone and use them in Apple music, you have to open the files on the computer and drag them to the place to use them.
**You have to jailbreak your iPhone to even customize your home screen (put apps wherever you like and make it look nice).
And I honestly could care less who did what first.
This will look amazing on the iPhone X screen! Definitely will try it, but maybe not until the spring or summer. It's very cold in Canada right now, LOL.
I had such a good year with this game. They should've kept it the same and added gens more frequently.
And Android users are getting ignored again. Niantic laziness at it's finest. Nothing short of pathetic.
....Still no more Stops, still don't care about game.
@Ttimer5 , I switched to android this year also I traded in my iphone for the Samsung note 8 and personally I am so glad I did the Note 8 is an amazing phone also Ive read apple is getting their new phone screens from Samsung which in my opinion Samsung have the best screens they are definitely made better and stronger than apples for me the main reason I switched to android , you hands down have more freedom and I needed a phone that offered removable memory (an SD card) live messenger is an awesome feature on the Note 8 as well and the huge screen is perfect .
"If you get too close to one of the lovely critters, though, they'll run away - you'll need to be careful to be successful."
Thank goodness I have Android, then - Pokémon run away often enough as-is.
My next phone will be the Nokia 8, I hope this AR+ plus feature appears on Android too...
@Steven_the_2nd iphone x can't get pen input as it wasn't designed to have that feature. Future models in iphone x line may...
iphone exclusive, splitting the community for minor features, seems like a scummy move to me.
@FTPinkRabbit
The only reason why this is iPhone exclusive is because it uses AR kit, an Apple made API for IOS 11. (Hecne why you need a 6s or higher)
Hopefully Niantic will take advantage of ARCore on Android to bring it to users of Google's platform.
But then again, we're still waiting for our equivalent of the Apple Watch app for Android Wear, so...
@AlexOlney
There isn't a technical reason most Android Phones can't do this, it's just easier to make changes to software for iPhones because the OS is much more uniform compared to the larger variety of Android OS's which have been modified by the phone manufacturers.
Of course, because it's technically possible for Android phones to do doesn't mean Niantic will do it.
Also, actually using the AR Camera for Pokemon go murders your battery, this feature is neat but only practical when trying to catch a Pokemon that is really far away from your screen and curve balls can't hit properly because of the narrow screen.
Haven't played the game regularly for well over a year. This doesn't interest me in the slightest either.
@Steven_the_2nd I use Android's because I can download things off the web browser instead of just the store by turning the safety thing off on the settings. All Android's do it. I also like Android because I can have two windows opened at once like YouTube and be browsing through the web at the same time, another thing is being able to quickly switch users on the slide down notification to guest user if someone asks to use my phone. I'm not sure if iPhones could do these things by now but that's why I use androids
@Steven_the_2nd
Samsung says "hi" and reminds you they make the screens for Apple. Granted, the iPhone X has a thinner bezel at the bottom, but the cut out at the top for the camera and speaker look silly IMO.
Also, here's a few things that my Galaxy S8+ supports that your iPhone X doesn't, off the top of my head:
That being said, I don't think people choose one operating system over the other based on what features it does or doesn't support. They choose it for how well it integrates with other devices to make life easier, as well as the price point (not everyone can afford a Galaxy S8+ or iPhone X).
@Steven_the_2nd iOS is just a lot more limited compared to what you can tinker with on your Android. If you're not interested in things like that, stick to iPhone, no need to poop on him for using his note 8 to the fullest.
@HipsterDashie
I believe that in large part that sort of thing is due to the fact that, from a developers’ perspective, Apple is much easier to program for than Android. For instance there’s what, maybe two dozen Apple products they have to keep in mind when developing an app? A few iPhones and iPads, and if they want to get really crazy an Apple Watch app too. But there’s literally thousands of different devices running Android.
@McHaggis
Wow, yeah. Even though I may disagree with your smartphone choice, I still found your post to be fair and well thought-out. Of course there are many things that an iPhone can do that Android can’t like Handoff, AirDrop, iMessage, 3D Touch, and being prioritized by app developers to name my favourites.There are even several file sharing apps that support drag and drop, along with the native Files app.
But there are still those that say there is a significant difference in the performance of any of the main flagship smartphones, and I feel that is ignorant. There’s very little difference now and it comes down to personal preference, like you said. I always find it interesting to hear different stories as to why someone switched from one platform to the other because there’s a lot of parity in the industry now.
So I applaud your respectful assessment and keeping things polite. I have been dragged into some very pointless debates because many people spread some pretty silly misinformation. But I guess folks just feel passionate. Can’t blame them, really. We spend a lot of our time with our smartphones.
