It's a western studio. They could maybe handle something goofy like Donkey Kong but by no means Zelda, Metroid or Kirby. Those series require Japanese touch or elegance.
BotW goes beyond traditional puzzles and TotK goes a landslide beyond it. Seriously, we've seen the Zelda-style oldschool puzzles in a million games after OOT. Even indie games have puzzles like that.
There's nothing awesome about Elden Ring having a few puzzles like this. It doesn't push the envelope anywhere. What makes BotW and even more TotK so great is the interactivity in the open world setting. Compared to that games like Elden Ring look dated.
Just some examples:
Armor in the new Zelda games improve stats, but it can also have other effects such as the rubber suit nullifying lightning or full zora armor increasing swimming speed.
You can swim and climb any surface in the new Zelda games. You can't even swim in Elden Ring let alone climb.
The new Zelda games have numerous things you can break to materials, such as cutting trees for wood. All materials have their uses such as armor upgrades instead of just rotting in your inventory. This is even more true in TotK because of the Fuse ability.
The physics based puzzles are innovative in an open world game.
All the effects of the physics and chemistry engine are far beyond Elden Ring.
There are so much more traversal methods, such as shield surfing, sand seal surfing, paragliding, swimming up waterfalls, etc.
Meanwhile in Elden Ring.... you can fight and there are some old school puzzles we've seen in a million games. You can travel on foot or use one horse (BotW had many horses you could pick with different stats and customizable looks). And that's it. The best features of the game are the enemy variety and the impressive landmarks. I dare to say the latter is its best feature, even if it's just a visual thing.
You.can tell most Nintendo fans are in their 40's or 50's, thinking the old man is hot.
@Shambo
Gotta disagree with you about Wind Waker Ganon. He's never felt that weak. He doesn't achieve anything except kidnapping a few children and loses to a 7 year old in a sword fight.
Even in Ocarina of Time Link had to grow up to face Ganon because it would've been an impossible mission to a kid.
I bet people will still complain about enemy variety even if they introduced 15 brand new enemies (by brand new I mean no color or elemental swaps).
To make these people happy they should introduce 1 billion trillion new enemy types.
Because, as these people know, enemy variety is the single most important thing in a game. How else would Elden Ring be so popular? You can't really do anything else but fight in that game, the world is not really interactive, there are no puzzles or abilities compared to Link's, you can't even swim...etc.
But as long as the game has enough different enemies who cares if the actual gameplay is barebones.
Right? RIGHT? I create a game with black and white stick figure graphics and create 1000 different enemies. Then it better be the best game ever because of enemy variety!
@DripDropCop146 FFS why is everyone smartass these days. By original I obviously meant when I see this picture, or any picture, drawn and colored in this style, I immediately know it's from a Zelda game from BotW or TotK period. Even if it depicted a random NPC, I would know it's from Zelda.
But show me an npc from Divinity OS 2 for example, drawn with the generic artstyle of that game and I would not now which fantasy game it's from.
@SonOfDracula That image does not fit in my definition of generic. Hell, the entire artstyle is original. If you need an example of "generic", think of a NPC from Skyrim drawn with the most typical computer graphics. THAT is generic.
It does say "based on the work of original Retro team" or something like that. Seriously, this issue is overblown. If someone needs the credits for some purpose google exists! Besides, why are they only call out Nintendo for this? Wasn't the remaster developed by Retro studios?
@Thief
Why is it not worth the full price? At the same time you have all kinds of crappy games that aren't nearly as fun selling at full price.
Surely it's not a whole new game, but you can't really play these games easily today. Unless you pirate the original AW 1 and 2. But here we have both games in a remade package.
Emulation is not the best way of playing anything. When you have like 200 games emulated, somehow it just makes you lose interest. Play one game for 5 minutes and then change to another. Not my idea of fun. Also, pc emulation just feels kind of cheap even if you have less roms.
I'm on board with everyone who says playing the original is the best option, but for an easier option, Switch online is pretty good as well. Since the amount of games is limited you get less likely the adhd episode to switch games every 5 mins.
Starting to believe Nintendo succeeds in whatever they wanna do? Other video game movies getting crappy reviews but the critics seem to really love this one. One of them even said it's one of the best family movies EVER? That's a pretty huge compliment for a video game adaptation. Or actually, any family movie.
As for the negativity. What the hell is this site turning to? We have a lot of people hating both Mario movie and the new Zelda despite having not played/ seen either one of them. What are you doing on a nintendo site if you hate all they do by default? If that's not trolling then I don't know what is.
In the meanwhile channels like youtube are full of people who are excited waiting for these things. I'm starting to think Nintendolife is turning to playstation/ xbox fans' trolling ground. Maybe us who love Nintendo should change a site. I'm sure there are other Nintendo sites with less trolling from these salty punks.
@Zequio
World looks exactly the same? You must've missed all the new geography when Link fell from the sky island.
But the comments. How the hell are so many people so negative on a nintendo site? In Reddit and youtube the overwhelming majority of the comments are positive.
What do you people want? A more restricted Zelda game? Yet another rehash of OOT? If you want to play the old games then play them! Don't buy TotK if it looks like crap in your opinion, based on 10 minute gameplay. We don't even know anything about the story, dungeons or boss and new enemy encounters and you think you already know how the game plays?
If you want old school Zelda gameplay you can buy Tunic or some other Zelda clone. Even the smaller indie developers can build games like that today.
The coding in TotK is not something anyone could do. TotK is mechanically a bigger leap from Botw than Elden Ring is from Dark Souls 3. And no one complains about those games.
Wow, the fuse ability is a game changer! Of course they didn't even show us the new enemies (except 1) and areas. This short clip makes other such games look dated already.
This list is based on audience voting. I'd like to hear from that guy who said that BotW is really a 8/10 game after the honeymoon period. It seems most players rate it as the best Zelda and that can be no less than 10/10.
@TheChief506
If weapon breaking supports exploration and the crafting system in the game, giving the player the option to just have unbreakable weapons would ruin all this gameplay.
Some kind of repair system might work, though. Or reinforcing the weapons to endure more hits. But we'll see.
@YoshiF2
I alredy wrote this: the crafting system may have ruined Banjo because they took off the adventure elements from nuts and bolts in favor of crafting.
This is not the case in Zelda. All the elements of adventure are still there. The crafting system simply deepens what was before in BotW, and probably bring new mechanics on the table.
The NES Zelda was the first open world game ever, likely. BotW was a sandbox adventure game and TotK will follow it. We won't be getting any more OOT clones. That formula was spent to the point of boredom.
The modern Zelda is all about seamless open world where you can do almost anything.
THAT is the future of the series. Otherwise games like GTA and RDR would be the leading franchises in terms of gameplay. Nintendo knows Zelda needs to be on the top and going back to old game design would ruin everything.
@YoshiF2
I come from the commodore 64 generation. You know why my grammar is bad? Because my native language is not English and I write FAST.
In any case, all my points still stand. Comparing nuts and bolts to Totk is a poor comparison which will be obvious when the game launches. If not, I'm willing to eat my words.
Oh yeah, I edited my post preceding this about why nuts and bolts ruined Banjo, and why the crafting system won't ruin Zelda. It should be obvious but anyway.
@YoshiF2
In other words you misunderstood my original post. The only thing I was mistaken was that you can't get off your vehicle, but then again that was formulated as a guess. Besides, if the hub is the only place you can move without your vehicle, it's very different from Zelda. Even if you can get off your vehicle in the levels, the structure is still very different from Zelda. As far as I know, there's not much you can do when you're not riding the vehicle.
I think its obvious from the trailer alone there won't be a separate menu screen for vehicle crafting in TotK. You can do it whenever in the overworld.
Why would this crafting system ruin Zelda? You realize Nuts and Bolts flopped because they took off the adventure aspect in favor of crafting. This will not happen in the case of Zelda. The system simply deepens stuff you can do in Hyrule.
@YoshiF2
You can build anything freely in the overworld? To me it looks like the actual building is done in a workshop screen, which is essentially a menu screen. Have I mistaken? Because that's how they do it in every video. So, can you or can you not build stuff in the overworld, out from the workshop screen?
And the overworld where you can move? What exactly can you do in that place? Collect the parts and build them in that menu screen? What other things can you do in the overworld? Are there levels in the game or not and if yes, what does the overworld have to do with it?
I haven't played the game myself but what I've seen it doesn't look like TotK at all.
Nuts and Bolts is an obscure game and everyone is comparing it to Link's new open world adventure because there is a mechanic that- on the surface- allows you to build similar contraptions. The How is likely very different, though.
I bet these comparisons are made just to bring TotK down. I saw a comment here stating "Zelda Nuts and Bolts is Goty? Laughable." or something like that, proving my suspicions.
It wouldn't be the first time Zelda series changes gaming. The original NES Zelda, OOT and BotW had previously done this. That being said, I doubt the impact will be as big this time.
The "Banjo: Nuts and Bolts"- comparisons are stupid, people. Have you guys even played that game? Go to youtube and see how it actually works. You can't build anything freely. There is no overworld where you could move. Banjo has a separate "garage" menu screen for building stuff and it's a level- based game. I don't know if you can even get off your vehicle. Tears of the Kingdom's crafting system doesn't really look similar at all.
@Uncle_Franklin Of course they didn't settle to that. That's just a prototype layout. Even if they had used this mushroom-shaped map, it wouldn't have looked like this when completed.
1. Ocarina of Time Link is the only one who grows up.
2. Majora's Mask link gets depth because the npc relationships are so damn good in the game. He also gets additional "personalities" by wearing the masks.
3. Wind Waker Link is just so cute and has this childlike wonder- kind of personality.
4. Twilight Princess Link has his additional wolf persona.
5. Breath of the Wild Link has a clear backstory defining him. He's the only Link who is "mute" for a reason.
6. Link's Awakening Link's trippy quest is bittersweet.
7. Skyward Sword Link is... heroic? From this point down are the lower tiers. Most Links are mainly just proxies for the player, even though somehow Link still feels like Link in every game, and not a no-personality.
Jim Sterling will give it a bad review because the price is slightly higher.
But for real, it's just 10 dollars. The game will probably be ahead of the competition anyway, so I see no problem with the price reflecting on that. If it was 80 or 90 dollars, now that would be a problem because the difference would be too blatant.

Unlike the live action Mario movie, this was actually tailor made to please the fans of the games. All the easter eggs definitely proves that.
Keeping this in mind, the more negative reviews are not too surprising from your average movie critic who may not know that much from the games.
If you love Mario games, I'm pretty sure you'd like the movie.
