Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Caryslan

@Collinhall I had to sell my Xbox One S off a few years ago due to financial issues. Things finally stabilized and I picked up a Xbox Series X.

I have the Xbox 360 arcade ports of Shinobi and Altered Beast that I picked up on my old 360.

Not only did those games carry over to my new Xbox, my old save state files were also there ready to load.

That was honestly nice to see, and it feels rewarding that my years of investing in Xbox since the OG system not only brings many of my old games forward, but my save files as well.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

Caryslan

One of the reasons why I love my Xbox Series X is because it's fully backward compatible with Xbox One games and a good chunk of games from the Xbox 360's and OG Xbox's libraries.

It's awesome to play an old Xbox 360 game I loved on my shiny new Xbox Series X. It also makes me feel better as a consumer knowing that my investment in the Xbox family since the OG system is paying off when I access to most of my old games.

So to me, Backward Compatibility is a major selling point since it allows me to enjoy my older games on new hardware. It also makes me feel better for investing in a system if I can bring my library with me.

I believe the Switch 2 needs Backward Compatibility. Not only will it help negate alot of early system droughts by offering Switch 2 owners access to new Switch games, but it will matain loyalty for the millions of Switch owners and will make them less hesitant to upgrade.

Re: PlayStation Boss Doesn't Think Call Of Duty Appeals To Nintendo's Core Audience

Caryslan

You know, Sony's attitude in all this is what has turned me off of the PlayStation hardware and made me pretty much support Xbox and Nintendo.

I honestly don't get how the PlayStation is so popular. I had a PS3 and it was a piece of junk that barely lasted two years before it started having hardware failures, and it felt like my PS4 spent more time downloading updates to games and not letting me play them.

I just have a preference for Xbox and Nintendo platforms now, and Jim's idiotic takes aren't helping.

Especially the arrogant belief that PCs and the Switch somehow aren't competition.

Re: Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - A Fun Ride That Substitutes Story For Spectacle

Caryslan

@Impossibilium I think the issue is that it feels like they are trying to use the Super Mario Bros Movie to launch a Mario Cinematic Universe that leads into a larger Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

The reason why I say that is because of how the Kongs appear in the film.

Donkey Kong seems to have a sizable role where he's helping Mario, Cranky Kong has a notable role, we have cameos from Diddy, Dixie, Kiddy and Funky(who are all prominent Kongs will all three besides Kiddy showing up alongside Mario in spin-off games), but then we have Swanky Kong who was never a prominent Kong and has not even appeared since DKC 3 on SNES.

Now, you might argue that these are fun cameos to cater to Nintendo fans, but given how every studio is looking to build the next MCU, I can't help but shake the feeling that this is all setup for a Donkey Kong film and that they are trying to use the Mario Bros film to launch a Nintendo Cinematic Universe.

Just my take.

Re: Game Boy And GBA Coming To Switch Online Today

Caryslan

Game Boy Family systems should have arrived on NSO a long time ago, but it's nice they have finally arrived.

It's another chance to reintroduce so many classics to a new generation of gamers or to gamers who might have missed them the first time around.

I am surprised Tetris is back on the service. The Virtual Console release of the Game Boy version was delisted years ago due to Nintendo losing the license.

Guess Nintendo worked things out, and I am happy to see that. Not only is Game Boy Tetris a historically important game, it's still one of the best versions of the game ever made.

But regardless, nice to see the Game Boy Family finally make it onto the NSO.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Excited To See Call Of Duty Return To Nintendo Platforms?

Caryslan

To be honest, I enjoyed the Call of Duty games on the Wii and Wii U and I welcome the return of the franchise to Nintendo platforms.

This is honestly a smart move on Nintendo and Microsoft's part. One of the reasons why I think the Switch has been such a massive success is because Nintendo managed to make the system appeal to a demographic of gamers outside of the hardcore Nintendo fanbase for the first time on a home console since the SNES.

They did this by courting third-party support and getting major third-party titles onto the platform.

While there are still obvious gaps in third-party support, Call of Duty is a major win by Nintendo who can use the franchise as another carrot to entice gamers over to the Switch and eventually the Switch's successor. They can also play up the fact that the Switch and any successor can offer the full Call of Duty experience on the go without having to be watered down like past portable entries.

Microsoft also benefits because a strong Nintendo helps hold Sony back to some degree. Nintendo and Microsoft have enjoyed a strong relationship this generation and I don't see that ending.

Call of Duty is the biggest FPS series in the world and it has alot of fans. Now, Nintendo can once again entice gamers with both Mario and Call of Duty.

Unless they totally screw up the Switch 2, I can only see this news furthering Nintendo's dominance of the gaming market into the next generation.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Punch-Out!!

Caryslan

@larryisaman As much as I enjoy Punch-Out and would love a new game, I think Nintendo would run into a lot of issues nowadays due to the fact that pretty much all the cast, even Little Mac himself plays on stereotypes of various countries around the world.

If gives the series it's charm, but in the modern social climate, I could see Punch-Out having fun with stereotypes drawing the wrong kind of ire from the wrong kind of crowd.

I know the cultural humor has been there since the first arcade game(Pizza Pasta, Vodka Drunkenski), but technical limitations on the older Arcade, NES, and SNES games kinda downplayed it.

But the Wii game made the cultural stereotype humor one of the main focuses of the game, and while I think it was fine when that game first released, the world has changed since 2009.

Re: Review: Sonic Frontiers - A Bold But Ultimately Failed Attempt At Something New

Caryslan

@KingDunsparce I will never understand why people praise Adventure 2 like it's the only 3D Sonic game worth playing. Honestly, I always held the opinion that it's a decent game, but it's a massive step back from Adventure 1.

The Field Stages were removed, and you have fewer gameplay styles since Tails' SA1, Amy's, and Big's gameplay was removed, it felt like Sonic got fewer levels overall, the levels just did not feel as fun to play as Adventure 1's levels, and I honestly thought Adventure 1 had a more interesting story and Chaos a more interesting villain.

That's the thing, there have been good 3D Sonic games over the years. Adventure 1, Adventure 2, Unleashed, Colors, and Generations prove it.

I don't know how good Frontiers is because I have not played it, but I have enjoyed many of Sonic's 3D adventures.

Are they as good as the 2D games? Not quite, but I think Sonic as a concept is just harder to make work in 3D compared to Mario, Zelda, or Castlevania.

A game built on speed and split-second reaction time is always going to play better on a 2D plane than on a 3D plane.

Re: While Old Games Are Easily Delivered, Nintendo Is Focused On New Experiences, Says Miyamoto

Caryslan

Yeah, I don't understand how hard it is to make a small team devoted to porting Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games to the Switch.

It seems like Nintendo is doing everything possible to add everything else besides Game Boy Family games to Switch Online and I don't see the logic.

Adding OG Game Boy and Game Boy Color for the base subscribers and the Game Boy Advance for the expansion pack will attract more gamers and add more value to the overall service.

I just don't get it, Game Boy Family systems should have been added to NSO years ago, and yet Nintendo avoids adding these systems like the plague.

At this point, I half-expect Game Gear and Turbografix-16 games to arrive on NSO before the Game Boy Family.

I understand the need for new experiences, but what if someone enjoys say Metroid Dread and wants to go back and play the older games? All they have right now are Metroid on the NES and Super Metroid on the SNES with NSO.

Imagine if they could also play Metroid II, Metroid Fusion, and Metroid Zero Mission on their Switch?

Re: Talking Point: Would You Prefer 'Super Mario Odyssey 2' Or A Totally New 3D Mario?

Caryslan

I have always preferred Mario's 2D Adventures to his 3D ones and I would love to see a new 2D game.

But I want to see it take the 2D style of Mario to the next level, pushing the boundaries of what we expect from that style of Mario game.

I loved the NSMB games, but those games never went outside the SMB3/SMW mold in terms of their gameplay, and copy and pasting assets between entries really hurt that series and honestly was unusual for Nintendo.

I think 2D Mario could be pushed to the next level in terms of gameplay and innovation.

Re: Poll: What Switch Online N64 Game Are You Most Excited About?

Caryslan

@FishyS At the risk of angering N64 fanboys, I think the system has aged much worse than the PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

I can go back to many PS1 games today and still enjoy them, but I don't feel the same way for most N64 games.

I also wanted to see the Game Boy family join NSO especially with the 3DS and Wii U eShops both closing in a few months, cutting off legal access to the only modern day releases of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.

Plus, I will just say it. The GBA's library blows the N64 out of the water.

Re: Super Bomberman R 2 Coming To Switch In 2023

Caryslan

@shonenjump86 I am happy to see Bomberman get another game that looks solid, but it's kinda sad that they are treating a series that Hudson Soft created better then their classic homegrown franchises like Castlevania, Contra, Gradius, Metal Gear, etc.

Re: Switch Online Should Leverage GameCube, Wii And Deliver "More" N64 Content, Says Former NoA Boss

Caryslan

You know what's sad? Nintendo could have made the retro game part of Switch Online their Netflix or Disney+ of Retro Gaming.

A place where you can play NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, and GameCube games as part of your subscription.

We eventually got Sega Genesis titles on these, so Nintendo could have gotten them to add Master System and Game Gear games. Or maybe get with Konami and add Turbo-Grafix 16 games to the service.

There was so much potential here, but Nintendo wasted it.

Game Boy family games still aren't on NSO, they spent a year releasing mostly trash games in 2021, and they act like Pinball arriving on the service in 2022 is a big deal.

Nintendo had a chance to have their gamepass but focused on Retro Gaming, but they screwed up their chance.

Which is a shame because the prices of retro Nintendo games keep going up, while the desire of gamers to play these classics again or for the first time.

Nintendo could have taken advantage of this.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES Service With Three More SP Titles

Caryslan

You know what would have been a better celebration? Adding Game Boy family systems to the service so Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Pinball Land, Kirby's Block Ball, Kirby's Star Stacker, Nightmare in Dream Land, and The Amazing Mirror could be enjoyed by gamers young and old.

It's fitting as well since Kirby debuted on the Game Boy.

Re: EA Reportedly Pursuing Sale Or Merger

Caryslan

People may not like EA, but whoever buys them is going to get tons of IPs to play around with.

It would go deeper then just Madden, FIFA, and Battlefield.

Due to their purchases of companies like Origin, Maxis, Bullfrog, and others EA owns franchises like Ultima, Wing Commander, all the various Sims games, Command and Conquer, etc.

Whoever buys EA is going to get a massive chunk of gaming history.

Re: Mother 3 Producer Shares Thoughts On Localisation, And Why It Hasn't Happened

Caryslan

@LexKitteh I think the problem is that I am not sure how Nintendo can market a game like Mother 3 and it's themes in the west.

Fire Emblem tackles some pretty heavy themes, but Fire Emblem benefits from having a fantasy setting, and the fact that most of the main lords are older teenagers or adults. Even Roy who is the youngest lord is fifteen years old.

This makes it easier to write and market a series like Fire Emblem in the west. One other aspect is that while the artstyle of the series is anime, you can easily tell the ages of the characters outside maybe the dragons.

I think the problem Nintendo faces in the west is mature content in a game that has a kid as the main character. Compound that with an era of SJWs and I just think Nintendo does not want to even try to bring Mother 3 over here.

Re: Gallery: Brand New Screenshots Of Sonic Origins, Out On Switch This June

Caryslan

As cool as this collection is, I still don't understand why Knuckles Chaotix did not make the cut in this collection.

I can understand not including the Sonic games that were on Master System, Game Gear, arcade, etc because those were totally different hardware architectures that would have required more work.

But Knuckles Chaotix was a 32X game and while it's hardware was more powerful than the base Genesis, I don't see why it could not be included.

You can't even blame an inability to get 32X emulation working since these games are rebuilt.

Just seems strange to have a Genesis era collection of Sonic games and still not re-release Knuckles Chaotix outside the 32X.

Re: Nintendo Of America Criticised Over Treatment Of Part-Time And Contract Workers

Caryslan

There will always be two faces of Nintendo.

One is the creative side, that creates and publishes some of the best games ever made while producing innovative hardware to play them on.

The other is the corporate side that can be ruthless by shutting down Project M or Melee online tournaments, went to war with video stores back in the 80s, controlled third-party publishers during the NES era, and are willing to throw their weight around to take down anyone who threatens them.

I learned a long time ago to seperate the two Nintendo's. I can enjoy their games and hardware while calling out the corporate end of Nintendo.

They are wrong to take advantage of workers like this, and I do hope appropriate measures are taken against Nintendo.

But I am sure this stuff is common, not just at other video game studios and publishers, but other industries as well.

Re: Feature: Will These 10 Classic JRPGs Ever Come To Switch?

Caryslan

You know what I would like to see above all those games on this list?

The Pixel Remasters of Final Fantasy I-VI ported to the Switch and other consoles.

Those games deserve to find a bigger audience that is not just limited to PCs or Mobile Phones.

Especially when you consider the vast majority of the target audience for the Pixel Remasters played Final Fantasy in the past either on the PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.

Re: The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles Has Sold Over 500,000 Copies Worldwide

Caryslan

Adventure/Visual Novel games are a niche genre, so it's nice to see Capcom keeping their expectations realistic and not expecting sales on par with their big three IPs which are Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Street Fighter.

This hints that we should expect a new Ace Attorney game soon hopefully alongside Mega Man 12.

But now I am a bit curious how the new Ghosts and Goblins did. Capcom highlighted the sales of Mega Man 11 and now The Great Ace Attorney, but I have not heard anything about the newest Ghosts and Goblins game.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Caryslan

@InJeffable The Game Boy not only managed to outlive the SNES, due to the fact that it could play dual GBC carts that had a mode that supported it, the Game Boy outlived the Nintendo 64 as well.

The last cart that was compatible with the OG Game Boy was a One Piece Game that came out in 2002.

That means the OG Game Boy outlived the NES, SNES, N64, and lingered on for a bit after the GameCube was released.

It also managed to survive despite two successors coming out with the Color and Advance.

The Game Boy not only outlived it's main rival the Game Gear twice(the second was an attempt to revive it as a budget system in the US in 2000 by Majesco) it outlived Sega's downfall as a hardware manufacturer.

The OG Game Boy survived for 13 years before finally going to it's grave, an impressive number especially given it outlived three of it's console rivals, it's more powerful competitors, and it's own successors.

The Game Boy had a longer lifespan then the Game Boy Color and Advance.

Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Caryslan

I voted for the SNES because I consider the 16-bit generation to be the best generation in the history of gaming.

Nintendo and Sega fought each other in a brutal and often bitter war, and the result was the SNES and Genesis hosting some of the greatest games ever made.

Even the TurboGrafx-16 played host to numerous amazing games.

For me, the SNES is the perfect Nintendo console.

Re: Sonic 2 Movie Speeding Towards $65 Million In Its US Opening Weekend

Caryslan

@sleepinglion Paramount and the production team swallowing their pride and redesigning Sonic in the first movie not only won them brownie points, it also attracted the Sonic fans.

Alot of Sonic fans were children when the Genesis games came out, and now they have kids of their own which gives them a great film to share with their kids.

Then you have the kids who got into Sonic on the GameCube or PS2 who are now getting older and while they might not have kids yet, they see Sonic 1 and decide to watch it.

My point is, unlike most previous movie adaptations of video games, this one catered to the fans of the games, and in turn, it spread to the mainstream movie goers who might not be Sonic fans but heard what a great film. Sonic 1 was.

Sonic 1 broke through the glass ceiling that held back video game movies for decades, and Sonic 2 looks to shatter it.

And it all started because the filmmakers we're willing to swallow their pride and listen to fans.

Re: Sakurai Reflects On Every Super Smash Bros. Fighter Reveal In New Blog Post (Part 2)

Caryslan

While I could care less about Sora because I never really played Kingdom Hearts, even I have to admit that his trailer was a perfect ending and callback to the trailer that introduced the Inklings to Ultimate.

But my favorite DLC fighter in Ultimate is still Hero and I love his trailer. As a Dragon Quest fan, it was awesome to hear that iconic theme start playing as the Hero from XI appeared.

Then I was excited when the Heroes of III, IV, and VIII were shown to be playable, and the other Heroes made a cameo appearance in his Final Smash!

Overall, I think Dragon Quest got much better representation than Final Fantasy(which just stuck to drawing all its content from VII) and Kingdom Hearts(which was forced to drop pretty much anything Disney related)

But the best overall newcomer trailer still belongs to Mega Man.

Re: You Likely Won't Be Able To Catch 'Em All In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet

Caryslan

Let's be honest here, you won't get a complete Pokedex in a base Pokemon game again because they have to sell DLC to players and dangling Pokemon that can only be found in these expansions is a pretty big carrot.

On top of which, this increases the value of the Gen V remakes that will likely arrive in a few years.

From what I have read, most of the missing Pokemon families in Gen V IIII are from Gen V and VI.

Guess what two gens are next on the remake block?

It's all about squeezing as much money out of the Pokemon brand as possible.

Re: It's Official, Nintendo Has Withdrawn Super Smash Bros. From EVO 2022

Caryslan

@Ultimapunch Smash Bros is not a multiplatform game, it's a major exclusive for Nintendo.

But let me ask this, let's assume Microsoft had a new Killer Instinct game and they withdrew from E3. Would they be slammed for not wanting their game and IP promoted at an event that is owned by their console rival who will be shoving Playstation ads every chance they get.

I know it's a popular narrative to paint Nintendo as evil with their decisions, especially when it involves Smash.

But they aren't doing anything wrong here. They don't want to feature a major exclusive at an event hosted by one of their major console rivals.

What is wrong with that?
