The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has now officially been released in the US, and the opening weekend is currently on track to be bigger than the blue blur's first film.
According to Deadline, the Sonic 2 movie is currently racing towards a $60-$65 million opening across 4,234 theatres within the US. In contrast, the original 2020 film made $58 million across the first three days. Deadline provided some additional data:
"Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s Thursday was $5M, or 66%, higher than the original 2020 movie’s $3M Thursday previews, which started at 5 p.m. That movie saw a $20.9M opening day, of which previews accounted for only 14%, and a $58M three-day and $70M four-day weekend before finaling at $148.9M. The movie’s legs were indeed impacted then by the onset of the pandemic and exhibition closing nationwide."
Compared to other movies, Sonic has run rings around Michael Bay's new action movie Ambulance with an estimated $7.25 million opening, the comedy-adventure Lost City - opening to $30.4 million and Sony's Morbius which is currently in its second weekend and has made $56.1 million locally.
You can see how the movie has gone in other locations around the globe in our previous post. At this point, it's already outperforming the original movie in certain overseas markets:

Haven't seen it yet but I enjoyed the first one with my son. Glad this one is doing well. I hope Jim Carrey is in the 3rd one
It's great! I'm glad it's doing so well!! That's impressive especially since ticket sales are down right now.
Good for them, a nice family film, kids loved it and I enjoyed it. Kept it politics free and stuck to entertainment
I was slightly underwhelmed with Sonic 2 compared to the first one, which greatly exceeded my expectations. Sonic 2 is probably still the second-best film adaptation of a video game, though. It was more enjoyable than Detective Pikachu.
The last like 40 minutes of the movie were quite a ride, but the movie is over 2 hours long in total, and they could've easily cut 30 minutes worth of filler. If they trimmed the fat and made it closer to 90 minutes like the first one, the pacing would've been much better. There were just a lot of scenes that felt kinda pointless and went on for way too long. I might go into more details if someone wants to teach me the shortcut for hiding spoilers.

It was a fun filled movie, not something breath taking but a good popcorn party film for the whole family. If you grew up with Sonic this movie won't disappoint you. Of course there will be some scenes that don't need to be there but get pass those and the movie picks up at the end. Now can't wait for Sonic 3 and Amy.
I saw on Sony's Twitter they posted about Morbius being the number 1 movie in the world yesterday. I thought that was pretty funny because it's only because Sonic was releasing a week later in the US, because it was outperforming Morbius in the other markets. The Morbius sweep is over.
Good movie not spoiled by a forced injection of political BS. Cool depictions of some beloved characters. Nice nods to Sega fans throughout, like the Sonic theme ring tone, and Genesis game manual. What other easter eggs did you guys see? Oh and STAY for the mid-credits scene!
Movienic is killing it in the box office again. Goes to show giving fans what they want is always a good thing.
Also, RIP Crash Bandicoot.
I've no doubt I hear children in the stores be like mommy sonic is the best
Most Hollywood press still hates the original for listening to fans on Sonic's design. Imagine that, taking what the paying audience wants into account. Glad to hear the sequel is doing well!
Its because they actually cared about the movie they were making, and how people felt about it, because of that, is why the movies have done as well as the have.
Lets hope this is a new step for sonic.
Now bring on Sonic Frontiers!
I’m sick with a cold so hopefully when me and my family see it I’m feeling better.
(Please note that I said cold)
@sleepinglion Paramount and the production team swallowing their pride and redesigning Sonic in the first movie not only won them brownie points, it also attracted the Sonic fans.
Alot of Sonic fans were children when the Genesis games came out, and now they have kids of their own which gives them a great film to share with their kids.
Then you have the kids who got into Sonic on the GameCube or PS2 who are now getting older and while they might not have kids yet, they see Sonic 1 and decide to watch it.
My point is, unlike most previous movie adaptations of video games, this one catered to the fans of the games, and in turn, it spread to the mainstream movie goers who might not be Sonic fans but heard what a great film. Sonic 1 was.
Sonic 1 broke through the glass ceiling that held back video game movies for decades, and Sonic 2 looks to shatter it.
And it all started because the filmmakers we're willing to swallow their pride and listen to fans.

@DavidMac Nobody cares about your political affiliation. Hardly the place to talk about this.
I took my kid to see it the other day, it's actually a pretty good film. Much more grounded in it's identity than the first film, which was like half a Sonic film half a generic kids blockbuster.
@Not_Soos I felt it was a little overlong. The 5-6 minute uninterrupted scene with the sassy black lady and her husband in particular felt completely unnecessary and removed from the plot, very strange decision to put that in
**[POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING]**
@Matty1988 It honestly felt longer than that, lol. They pulled an interesting plot twist with that scene, but it did feel completely unnecessary since it didn't tie back in later. Really, the only purpose the wedding served was to explain how they got the biplane, but that's it. Sonic, Eggman, and co were nowhere in sight for several minutes. It felt like I was watching a completely different movie--like some kind of cheesy action rom-com. Tails was out of commission for like 30 minutes.
Then there was the whole dancing scene, which was pretty forgettable. If they had used a song from one of the games instead of just a random pop song, then it would have been a cool fanservice moment. But as it was, it was just a lame obstacle they had to overcome to get the map. They also had no idea what to do with Agent Stone in this one. Felt like he was just twiddling his thumbs the whole time. He had a decent amount of screen time, but I don't think he ever did anything important. He was just sort of in the background playing second fiddle to Knuckles.
Just a lot of stuff that didn't feel needed and only served to drag the movie down. Still a very good video game adaptation, don't get me wrong. But, the script definitely could've used more time in the oven. The climactic final act was pretty much perfect and made the tedious moments worthwhile, but the rest was a bit of a jumbled mess of ideas. A lot of it really worked, but there were several moments sprinkled in that just didn't.
I'm glad I wasn't the one who sent the comments section off the rails with irrelevant political discussion this time. It's tempting, but I'm not gonna get entangled in it this time. Nnnnope. No, siree. I'm stronger than this. 😬
@Orpheus79V Morbius never had a sweep. It won’t even make as much as the Incredible Hulk before it’s out of the theaters.
Good movie. The sonic fans I know are pretty happy with it.
Hope it does well!

The film is too long to be fun. All the kids in the screening that I was at were bored because it was too much to ask them to sit still for that long.
Amazingly there is a good 15-20 mins that aren’t needed that could have been cut.
Crazy how Sonic is still successful after so many bad games. It's really a franchise that ignores death. Pokemon will probably die before Sonic at this rate.
@Not_Soos Honestly I didn't mind the dance scene as a little bit of bonding filler, it at least set up the duplication tech seen in the climax of the film.
That wedding/post wedding though..
Im gonna wait, the first one arrives on netflix soon, after that one i will watch 2.
Saw it last night, better than the first but has too many humans in it (really only Robotnic and his lackey need to be in it) and the CGI is a little dodgy in parts but overall I really enjoyed it.
1/10 not released on a tuesday
Watched it this morning, It's pretty enjoyable, liked a it more than the first one. I thought Jim Carey's portrayal of Robotnik was even better this time.
Spoiler talk
Some interesting call outs like the Mean Bean cafe and some others. But as some mentioned it's longer than it really needed to be.
Also I like how the Echidna backstory in the movie set off that ex-Archie Comic Ken Penders guy who thinks he owns knuckles.
@Not_Soos Yeah I'd agree a bit it picked up towards the end but what I think the compass plotpoint kind of elongated it. Like very weird that a movie where the heroes and villains can essentially teleport wherever they want with the rings kind of got bogged down in a travel scene(s). It made for a very long act 2. (The wedding did also establish G.U.N in the universe though it didn't really impact much)
/Spoiler talk
Sort of hope the Super Mario movie will be good. These Live Action + Animation are alright, But next I'd like to see a great fully animated videogame movie.
@Bigbear1up Yea, about that....
@sleepinglion Well there is the theory that they intentionally made the original Sonic design bad and then redesigned it in order to generate more hype and sales which is pretty convincing.
The movie is pretty good, but once again, my biggest disappointment is the same as the previous movie.
The Sonic franchise has so much great music, so many great vocal tracks like Open Your Heart, Escape From The City and Live and Learn, yet Hollywood insists on making the movie full of the popular songs, giving the casual masses that don't play Sonic games the same songs they already know instead of giving them the classics by Masato Nakamura and Crush 40.
@Not_Soos saw it today and that's exactly, what I'm thinking. 👍🏼
Some scenes were pointless and some jokes should have been left out. The main thing was brilliant, I'm a huge fan of the Adventure series and older Sonic games.
This movie could have been Ace.
But it felt so over westernd, that it hurts a bit.
I loved it and had a big grin on my face the entire time, Elba was awesome as Knuckles as well.
This is great to hear, I went with a movie this afternoon with a friend and we loved it. He contributed towards the ticket sales Took me to the movie as part of my birthday. We celebrated the other day with a small Trolls themed party, and he took me to the movie today since he had today off.
Really, this movie releasing close to my birthday was a real treat. Also, the theater felt like a Sonic convention. Most there wore Sonic themed shirts and had plushies, myself included, it was fun.
It will never do as good as morbius which sold one morbillion tickets. Stupid joke out of the way the first movie was surprisingly good, so I'm excited to see the second one when it goes on dvd
I love the warmth and message of teamwork along with the importance of family togetherness. I can see there was effort to keep the people happy who are already familiar with the games, while making the movie accessible to new audiences. I like how Sonic blends and interacts with the human world. It actually works nicely and nothing new as the 3D Sonic games already contain people in it.
@Threebcisum Not sure I buy that. Some things like Michael Bay's horrific Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles design are just bad choices made by tone deaf creatives
The first Sonic movie was great, thankfully the sequel took everything I loved about it and built on it. As for anyone who hasn't seen it, I won't get into spoilers, however, there's a mid credit scene that you should stick around for.
It was honestly one of the best movies I have seen for a while - I took my 5 year old son and he absolutely loved it!

I totally agree with that.
@Everyone_Else The film was awesome. My theater has in the lobby some Sonic ring-toss games for kids, the posters for ticket purchasers. I have seen it twice: once with my friend opening night, and the by myself the next day. As everyone is commenting, there are some scenes that could have been pared back a little, although all of the scenes set up something revisited later in the film, and/or for revisiting later in the franchise.
Oh yeah, continuing the comment section joke: Morbius will outsell every Sony Spiderman Universe film (Venom, Venom 2, etc), and every Disney/Marvel Cinematic Universe film to date! And that's a fact (...in an alternate reality.) In all seriousness, I heard it's an ok film, just poorly paced, and a lot of people got tired of the delays, regardless of Covid-19.
