Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES Service With Three More Titles

Caryslan

I see alot of people complaining about Nintendo digging the bottom of the barrel for games, but the problem is that most of the major third-party titles on the NES and SNES like Mega Man, Castlevania, Contra, and Dragon Quest all have either collections on the Switch or enhanced ports.

Other major issues is that stuff like the TMNT games are held back by licensing issues.

As for other major third party titles like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy I, IV, VI, and Hudson Soft's backlog(Bomberman, Adventure Island, Bonk) those don't have special ports on the Switch yet, but Square Enix and Konami(Who own the rights to all of Hudson Soft's library) don't seem to want to put their games on the service.

Nintendo themselves don't really have much left in terms of first party software for the NES or SNES.

Earthbound Beginnings and Star Tropics II on the NES side and Earthbound and Super Mario RPG on the SNES side are the only major first-party titles not on the service yet. No doubt, they are saving these titles for the holiday season to push the online service.

This is made ever worse by the fact that since Fire Emblem and Famicom Wars never came to the west, lowering the number of first party games Nintendo has to potentially add.

With all these factors considered, this is why it seems like Nintendo is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Games from lower tier third parties like Data East and Interplay is likely all they can get right now.

While I am not totally defending Nintendo, I get the impression they expected third-parties to pick up the slack and that simply has not happened.

Re: Switch Was The Best-Selling Console In The US For The First Half Of 2021

Caryslan

Honestly, it's a good thing that Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox are all doing well.

It means the market is very healthy, and regardless of the consoles you prefer, all of them have found success in the marketplace.

I personally prefer Xbox and Nintendo, but I have no issues when Playstation does well.

A heathy console market with three strong competitors means more support and games for everyone.

Re: Talking Point: Can Metroid Dread Be The Franchise's 'Awakening'?

Caryslan

@Beaucine All of Nintendo's franchises pretty much share common themes like a playable character who might be serious, but have quirks or be goofy at times, a supporting cast that has their own quirks and might even be cartoonish bright colorful worlds, and villains who while evil might have things to their personality of backstory that make their intentions more forgiving.

My point is, franchises like Mario, Zelda, Fire Emblem, Punch-Out, Kid Icarus, Pokemon, Star Fox, Kirby, etc all share these common themes.

Then you have Metroid where the games have a world that is dark, Samus is played as a serious character with no goofy moments, she has virtually no supporting cast in most of her games, and if they do exist, they are not played as funny, and the villains are either violent creatures or ones like Ridley or Mother Brain who have no redeeming qualities and are never played for humor.

Metroid as a series is so different in terms of its presentation compared to other Nintendo franchises, that its stands out and I think this is one of the things holding the series back.

Even when Zelda and Fire Emblem gets dark, there are still enough light elements between the cast and other stuff to lighten the mood, and the horrible acts of the villains are implied in dialogue, but rarely shown.

Metroid on the other hand openly shows dead bodies and other carange that the villians cause. Super Metroid outright shows the people Ridley killed to steal the infant Metroid, something Zelda or even Fire Emblem have never done.

This in a way, makes it hard to market Metroid to players who are into other Nintendo franchises.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New

Caryslan

@Duncanballs I hate to say this, but I kinda feel the same way. I read articles where Nintendo is praised for bringing back Wario Ware, but did it ever really go away?

There has been a Wario Ware game on every Nintendo system since the GBA, even if some like the 3DS entry were best-of collections.

Again, 2-D Metroid is the same way. Yes, this is the first new 2-D Metroid since Fusion, but we have gotten several over the years.

No, a bigger suprise would have been a new F-Zero, or maybe remakes of the two Star Tropics games for modern hardware to introduce that IP for a new audience.

Years ago, Nintendo stunned everyone when they showed off a new Donkey Kong Country game or when they revived Kid icarus.

That magic just seems to be gone. Nintendo has fallen into the same trap as their rivals of depending on the same IPs over and over again because they are proven sellers.

If an IP is given a second chance like Advance Wars or Famicom Detective Club, its as a remake which is safer.

My point is, Nintendo has gone into the same trap as its rivals, third-party developers, and honestly, the entertainment business as a whole of depending on a handful of proven IPs and never really taking any chances.

I love Nintendo, I love their games, but it feels like they are now focused on Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon with a few lower-tier franchises tossed in that sell.

It says something when we are on the 8th entry in the Mario Kart series on consoles, but they will find every excuse in the book not to make another F-Zero game.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New

Caryslan

Like I said in another post, this Direct really did nothing for me.

Metroid Dread was hype, and I'm looking forward to it, but where was the news about Metroid Prime 4?

Advance Wars looked cool and Zelda news is always welcome, but honestly, everything else was just meh for me outside of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot coming to the Switch and Kazuya coming to Smash.

I don't care about Mario Party or Wario Ware, so those games did nothing for me.

If you like those games, then I hope you have fun.

But I wanted to see a new Donkey Kong game, or a new Kirby, or maybe a surprise revival in the form of a new Kid Icarus or F-Zero.

For me personally, Metroid Dread is the only thing I'm hyped about.

Plus, I was honestly disappointed that nothing was announced for the Switch Online service. Come on Nintendo, is it relly that damn hard to add Game Boy, GBC, or GBA games to the service?

Re: The E3 2021 Awards Winners Are In, But Nintendo Lost Out

Caryslan

Maybe I have different tastes from everyone else, but Metroid Dread was the only game Nintendo showed off that got me hyped.

Advance Wars was pretty cool, and its nice to see it remade and Zelda news is always welcome.

But I don't care about Wario Ware or Mario Party, especially a rehash of N64 era minigames.

Where's a new Donkey Kong? Kid Icarus? Kirby?

If this lineup is what is needed to win a show, then how low is the bar?

We got nothing new for the Switch online even though it would be a simple matter to add GBA, Game Boy, or GBC games.

My point is, if these games interest you, then I hope you enjoy them.

For me personally, the only game that I'm hype for that they showed off is Metroid Dread and for me personally, this show really did nothing.

Re: New Animated Series Of Castlevania Confirmed For Netflix

Caryslan

@DrJoson They were both in Symphony of the Night which means it makes sense they picked this era since they can bring back Alucard.

@Severian This takes place in 1792 which means Christopher, Simon, and Juste should have previously fought and defeated Dracula.

My guess is that least Simon will be referenced in the show much like Leon was.

Simon is such an important Belmont, it's hard to ignore him

Re: Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Reportedly Considering Early Retirement

Caryslan

Something to keep in mind is that he's likely been working on Smash for nearly 10 years with no break.

Smash 4 released in 2014 and it did not end active development with DLC until 2016 when Corrin and Bayonetta dropped.

Then, Ultimate came out on 2018, and is still in active development.

Given the release date between games, Sakurai was likely in the early stages of Ultimate's development at the same time the last DLC fighters dropped in Smash 4.

That is two very demanding games in terms of development with no break in-between to rest or work on other games.

I am not shocked that he's wore out and tired.

With that said, I don't see him totally leaving game development. I can see him coming back after he rests to work on either a smaller Nintendo IP like Kid Icarus or a smaller project.

But I think he is done with Smash once the final Ultimate DLC fighters drop.

Ultimate is his final swan song with Smash which is why everyone came back to the roster.

Re: Fire Emblem: Genealogy Of The Holy War Is Joining Japan's NSO Super Famicom Library

Caryslan

@Vortexeo They never came out to the west back in the day. That's why we don't get them because they never left Japan and the Super Famicom.

@LaytonPuzzle27 I think the Genology games are gonna be remade on the Switch. The DS got a remake of Shadow Dragon and it's sequel and the 3DS got a remake of Gaiden.

Nintendo has been introducing Genology and it world to western gamers through Heroes, so a remake makes sense.

For this reason, I don't see them putting a translated version of Genology on the Switch in it's 16-bit form and even if they did, they are gonna make you pay for it like they did with the translation of Shadow Dragon.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

Caryslan

@nessisonett I think the problem with Nintendo is that they are prone to perfectionism when it comes to translation, that anything that does not match up to their translations of names and other terms that they use in Fire Emblem Heroes they will reject right away.

I have played some fan translated roms, and some of them play a guessing game with names that sometimes don't even match up with what Nintendo uses.

Plus, they are not Sega. Nintendo is not a fan of user generated content based on their games unless it's made with a Nintendo approved sandbox like the Mario Maker games

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

Caryslan

@ObeseChihuahua2 Joe and Mac while not the biggest franchise was a popular Arcade game back in the early 90's and Magical Drop was a fairly popular Puzzle game series.

But this argument makes no sense. Just because a game might not be well-known, it's automatically shovelware and unworthy of people taking a look at the game?

Imagine if people had your mind set regarding Earthbound. Yes, there was a time where it was a forgotten game tossed in clearence bins in Wal-Mart's all over the country, that where my brother got his copy.

Now what if people had this mindset that Earthbound was not popular and was shovelware that should be ignored?

Would it have grown in popularity over the years?

Not all games can be Mario. Slamming Joe and Mac as shovelware just because it's not as well known today is a bad way to judge things.

Remember, there was a time where hardly anyone outside Japan played or even gave a damn about Earthbound.

If people had your mindset, then it would still be a forgotten relic of Nintendo's history rather then a series with a following that eclipses the reception it got in 1995.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

Caryslan

Yay, people will trash a bunch of games just because they aren't Earthbound or Super Mario RPG.

We get it, you all want those games. But did you know the SNES had more then those two games, and these games in this group are pretty good?

Why not try them out? If you don't like them, what did you lose, a few moments? Or maybe you'll discover a fun game you never played before.

Re: Rumour: Sega Will Re-Release Sonic 3 & Knuckles In A New Sonic Collection

Caryslan

@robr I honestly think it might be an issue including the lock on technology, but is it really that hard to emulate overall?

I might say it's an issue with the music, but a Sonic 3 beta has swapped out music for Carvinal Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base Zones. These tracks were even used in the PC version.

At this point, I am a loss as to why Sega has buried this game for over a decade.

Re: Konami Won't Be Attending E3 2021 But Still Has A Number Of Projects To Reveal

Caryslan

@JeanPaul It gets even worse given it's not just their franchises that are being ignored.

They also own Hudson Soft's franchises and it's legacy.

People often cry about Castlevania, Contra, and the fate of Konami's other franchises and they are correct to do so.

But Adventure Island, Bonk, Blood Roar, and other Hudson IPs have also been forgotten and ignored, all of them begging for new entries.

After reading the comments here, this tends to be forgotten.

Konami has basically taken a dump on the legacy of two companies that were at one point, major players in the world of gaming.

Re: Multiple Parties Reportedly Interested In Buying Square Enix

Caryslan

@Wexter I'm afraid it has to be one of the big three, and my money would be on Sony.

They are losing badly to Nintendo in Japan, and they need a major move to counter Microsoft's purchase of Bethesda.

I could see them opening up their war chest if it gets them the chance to make Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest exclusive.

I doubt any other third-parties can afford to buy Square Enix, Nintendo almost never opens their piggy bank for these kinda deals, and Microsoft just bought Bethesda.

Sony I'm afraid, is the best choice and the one who gains the most from this kinda deal.

Re: Japanese Charts: Monster Hunter Rise Stays Top In A Nintendo-Dominated Top Ten

Caryslan

@Ralizah I honestly don't get why they even bother with Japan. I think they could save some money if they stopped selling the Xbox in Japan and devoted those resources (which are wasted quite frankly) to regions like North America and Europe where the Xbox does well.

@outsider83 I get the impression that most Xbox sales in Japan are to Americans or Westerners who are loyal to the brand.

There are alot of American service members over there.

Re: Global Sales Data Suggests Balan Wonderworld Has Massively Flopped

Caryslan

I decided to download a demo for this game on my Xbox One, and try it out for the sake of farness.

After playing it, I'm not shocked that it flopped.

The story had me asking questions in confusion(Who are the boy and girl, what's their relationship outside of them being playable charchters? Why is the guy on the box art shoved to an opening cutscene when I should be playing as him. Why are Peeps following me around? Who are the random animals that are dancing around the stage and the farmer?)

Sonic Adventure has NPCs that you could interact with, but a game world has never left me more confused and uninterested to keep on playing.

The other major issue for me is the graphics. I hate to sound like a jerk, but they are badly dated and look like late PS2 era or if I'm being a little nice, early PS3 era graphics. Everything just looks dull and boring.

I've been playing Batman: Arkham Knight again, and its almost like night and day when it comes to the graphics. Batman: Arkham Knight came out in 2015 and still looks damn good. This game, it can't even come close. I honestly will say that I have played games on my 2DS and PSP that look better.

If this were a 10 buck download game, I might give it a pass. But this is being sold as a AAA title, and this game looks dated. I compared its graphics to PS3 era games, but I can pop in 360 games into my Xbox One, and they look better. Hell, I can put Ninja Gaiden Black or other Xbox games into my Xbox One and they would look better.

I'm not normally a guy that harps on graphics, but this game stuck out like a sore thumb and that's not a good thing.

Now, let me move on to one last thing and that's the gameplay. Its as generic as you can get for a platformer, and its honestly feels very dated. This feels like someone dug up a Dreamcast era platformer on some forgotten server, gave it a very bad coat of HD paint, and then dumped it onto store shelves and digital storefronts.

I'm not even going to compare this to modern platform games like newer Mario games, because this thing can't even hold a candle to old platform games like Super Mario 64 and the Banjo games. Even Sonic Adventure(A game people love to bash nowadays but I consider one of my personal favorites) blows this game out of the water. Sonic Adventure starts off good, has a great intro level that gets you into the game and wanting to push forward, and has a decent story. How could two guys who worked on that game, put out something like this?

I'm not trying to be cruel, and if you enjoyed it, that's good. I can get enjoyment from games that other people slam.

I loved Duke Nukem Forever and consider it one of the best shooters I played on the 360 even with its faults.

But this game feels like a rushed relic from the 90s that is trying to ride on the fact that two people on its development team helped create Sonic and the early games in that series.

I respect Yuji Naka and I think he's a legendary game developer. But this was just a poor outing, and its shocking that a team of a Yuji Naka developed game and Square Enix could produce something like this.

No wonder this game is selling poorly. Good, polished games often fail when forced to deal with the AAA market and the competion for the money of gamers.

How in the hell did they expect this game to do well in a crowded market when its this half-baked and generic?

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo And The Industry Needs To Get Serious About Game Preservation

Caryslan

I have numerous emulators on my PSP and some PSP games I downloaded off the net.

I don't feel guilty for downloading these games because the PSP is no longer an active system Sony makes money off of, and the fact that they are shutting down the online store only backs me up.

I want to play PSP games like Ghost of Sparta, but the online store is down? Well, a used copy won't work since my UMD drive is busted.

What if a game is not on the store like Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai Another Road?

I collect roms to replay older games, try out games I never played when a system was new, and yes, preserve games.

When games get released properly on modern hardware, I do buy them like Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and The Blade of Light.

But in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with downloading old roms to systems that are out of production.

I don't feel guilty for having some roms on my PSP.

If Nintendo, Sony, Sega, or others won't release their games on modern platforms, then I'll find the games myself and play them.

This is why roms and gaming preservation are so damn important.

Re: Here's A Look At The Bomberman Board Game We'll Never Get To Play

Caryslan

It breaks my gaming heart to see Hudson Soft and it's legacy tossed in Konami's vault like forgotten trash.

Bomberman at least gets a little love, but would be nice to see Adventure Island, Bonk, Bloody Roar, or other Hudson ups get a little love.

Even a spirit for Master Higgins or Bonk would honor their history to gaming.

Re: Best Nintendo 3DS RPGs

Caryslan

I know this list does not cover Virtual Console games, but if anyone wants a good quality old-school RPG, check out Defenders of Oasis.

It's a 1992 Game Gear JRPG that is very good.

Re: Gogeta [SS4] Has Joined The Dragon Ball FighterZ Roster

Caryslan

OG Dragon Ball never seems to get any love.

Demon King Piccolo should have been in this game.

I like Super Baby 2 and SSJ4 Gogeta, but it annoys me how most Dragon Ball games(unless they are centered only on OG) ignore the era of Goku's childhood.

Fighter Z is not alone in this. Somehow Xenoverse 2 could include Raspberry who was the Frieza Force minion who only showed up in filler and got killed by a giant crab, but they can't include Demon King Piccolo who is one of the most important villains in the franchise?

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles

Caryslan

@Bolt_Strike It's a rumor, but I heard many Virtual Console games never really did that good because many gamers bought the tired and true games, and never bothered with much else.

To a degree, I think this is true since the only VC games that are in the top sellers list on the 3DS eshop are Super Mario Bros 3, the VC Pokemon games, and Earthbound.

This is why this update does not bother me. I see it as a chance to play some games I never had the chance to try before. If they suck, all I lost is a little bit of time, but if they are good, they I found some new games to enjoy or maybe even a lost gem.

This is how people need to look at this update.

Re: Soapbox: Retro Nintendo Games Cost Too Much, But Nostalgia Is Expensive

Caryslan

People can downvote me for saying this, but this is the reason why I feel no guilt playing roms of Nintendo games on my PSP.

I will buy the games if there are legal and cheap means like the Virtual Console, Arcade Archives, or the NES or SNES online.

But there are hundreds if not thousands of games that not just Nintendo, but third parties have never brought to modern platforms due to various reasons.

That leaves playing these games on aging carts and hardware as your only recourse where you have to pay an arm and a leg.

It's why I get upset when Nintendo cracks down so harshly on rom sites.

I get copyright, but if these companies can't be bothered to bring their older games to modern hardware, what are gamers supposed to do unless they want to break the bank to play a NES games?

Re: Square Enix Reports Increased Annual Sales, Despite Individual Game Losses

Caryslan

@Ks123 To be fair to Capcom, they might not be able to port the Disney Afternoon Collection to the Switch unless Disney allows it.

Given Capcom has put their other collections on the Switch, I am willing to bet that either Disney is refusing a port, or is charging a higher license fee for a potential Switch port then what was negotiated for the initial PS4 and Xbox One versions.
