Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

Caryslan

I am willing to bet the subscription model makes more money for Nintendo then the Virtual Console model of selling each game individually.

With the virtual console model, you pay $4.99 one time to buy Super Mario Bros. You own the games long as your account is active and can even transfer games between systems.

With Switch online, you have to pay at least $3.99 to play Super Mario Bros and that is for a month.

Once your subscription ends, you lose access to the game on Switch until you renew.

So, it begins to add up and Nintendo makes more money then they ever did just selling Super Mario Bros one time.

Because of this, I don't see Nintendo ever going back to the Virtual Console model. The subscription model makes more money and NES, SNES, and N64 games are an enticing carrot to dangle in everyone's faces.

Re: Nintendo Is Closing The 3DS & Wii U eShops And Has "No Plans To Offer Classic Content In Other Ways"

Caryslan

The more I think about this, the more it angers and upsets me that Nintendo would do this.

I don't expect them to keep an online store running for discontinued systems forever, but at least Wii and Wii U owners got several years after their systems were discontinued to pick up the games they wanted

3DS owners basically have till August 2022 to get the games they want before the shop closes forever.

We don't even get a year.

I am mad at Nintendo right now over this. It's so abrupt and sudden, which gives gamers, many of whom live on a tight budget a small window to get a game or risk not getting another chance or be forced to explore legally questionable methods.

I am not happy with Nintendo right now. Once the 3DS shop closes down, so many games will be potentially lost.

Re: Nintendo Is Ending Support For The 3DS & Wii U eShop

Caryslan

The biggest blow will be to the Game Boy family systems because the 3DS and Wii U are the only place to purchase Game Boy games outside of their original hardware.

I wish I could be optimistic and say Nintendo is going to bring the Game Boy family system to the Switch, but this is Nintendo.

They make amazing games, but otherwise, I don't expect much.

Re: Soapbox: Dear Konami, Please Do Something Decent With Castlevania

Caryslan

As much as I love Castlevania, at least it's gotten a few collections.

What about the Hudson Soft games you own Konami? Why don't you do something with Adventure Island, Bloody Roar, or Bonk? Or maybe release a Bomberman collection that features the NES, SNES, TG-16, and Genesis games?

Konami sits on a gold mine of gaming IPs and all they seem to care about is making NFTs.

I agree, we need a new Castlevania game, but it's not the only IP that Konami ignores.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Is Already Being Streamed Online, And It's Not Even Out Yet

Caryslan

This ladies and gentlemen is why Nintendo is so protective of their IPs and go after Rom sites so harshly.

It's also likely the reason why Nintendo is so anal about mods and fan-made games.

Nintendo has always been a company that likes to control their IPs and jerks who leaks games only makes them clamp down more.

So, the next time Nintendo shuts down a Smash mod or a fan-made game and people slam them as tight fisted control freaks who are behind the times, why don't you think the jackasses who are leaking and streaming games before their release date.

I would not be shocked if stuff like this is why Nintendo is harsh towards any use of their IPs they don't approve of.

Re: Japan's Top 100 Console Games Of All Time Revealed, According To A Nationwide TV Network Poll

Caryslan

I find it sad that so many people are insulting Japanese gamers because they enjoyed Sword and Shield and wish to rank it high.

I have always gotten the impression that Western and Japanese gamers have different tastes even in series that are popular on both sides of the pond and this list proves it.

Super Mario Bros 3 is much higher then Super Mario World while in the west, I feel that Super Mario World is more popular then 3.

Same goes for Pokemon. Western gamers were the most vocal when it came to bashing Sword and Shield and it still seems to get a mixed reception here.

On the other hand, not only were Japanese gamers not bothered by some issues pre-launch, they must love the game and it's features to rank it so high.

Japanese gamers are entitled to their opinions, and calling them idiots because they loved Sword and Shield is not just insulting, it's wrong.

My point is, don't call Japanese gamers idiots just because their tastes in games differ from western gamers.

Both sides have a right to their opinions and those opinions should be respected.

Re: Banjo-Kazooie Is Getting Jiggy With Nintendo Switch Online In January

Caryslan

@AlexanderDaniels Honestly, I'm getting annoyed by this since they fed us nothing but mostly garbage over they course of this year.

Hey Nintendo, where's Zoda's Revenge? Earthbound? Super Mario RPG?

If you were going to ignore the NES and SNES backlog after you added the N64, then you could at least add those games..

Re: Masayuki Uemura, Creator Of The NES And SNES, Has Passed Away

Caryslan

Masayuki Uemura did not just build the foundation of the modern Nintendo's gaming empire with the NES and SNES, his contributions built the foundation of modern gaming as we know it.

Even today, regardless of if you play Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox, you still see the foundation he laid. This is most obvious with the controllers, which all owe their basic button layout to the SNES.

Thank you Mr. Uemura for all you did for gaming to help put smiles of the faces of millions of players over the years, regardless of if they played Nintendo, Sega, PlayStation, or Xbox.

Re: A New Smash Bros. Would Need A Smaller Roster, Admits Sakurai

Caryslan

@TheRedComet I am not opposed to the idea of a 3D Nintendo arena fighter, but I think it needs to be separate. from the Smash Bros series and allowed to stand on its own merits.

This not only protects the Smash Bros series if the game either flops or fails to catch on, but it also allows a 3D Nintendo Arena fighter to be its own thing with no baggage from being attached to Smash Bros.

Also, if such an idea proves successful then it gives Nintendo another game franchise they can sell to consumers.

I honestly think Nintendo could do more with the idea of their characters teaming up in a game.

Maybe they could do an Avengers thing where Nintendo's characters unite to stop a major threat to all their worlds. Kinda like what Smash implies now, but make it an RPG with a storyline.1

Re: A New Smash Bros. Would Need A Smaller Roster, Admits Sakurai

Caryslan

I think the problem with cutting down the roster is that you risk upsetting somebody who enjoys playing as those fighters.

I have played Ike since Brawl. It would honestly suck to lose a character I have played across three Smash games.

I also think changing the gameplay from 2D to 3D would open a can of worms and risk upsetting fans who enjoy Smash for what it is.

We already have a group of fans who don't like Smash games beyond Melee because of changes to the gameplay and engines. Could you imagine the divide that would be created if they went from 2D gameplay to something like Power Stone?

Honestly, the best solution is to take the Mario Kart 8 route and release a Complete Edition of Ultimate on the next Nintendo console.

They could offer expanded online and single player modes, maybe even taking the time to flesh out the World of Light into a story mode on par with what we see in other modern fighting games.

Of course, they would have to sweeten the pot by adding new characters and stages to the base game. Maybe add fighters like Waluigi to the base roster of an Ultimate Complete Edition with the promise of more fighters coming as DLC.

It is the best solution in my opinion. The bulk of the game is already complete which means less pressure on Sakurai and his team, and there's no risk of upsetting players because their favorite character got cut from the roster.

Nintendo has also seen tons of success this generation porting Wii U games over to the Switch with added content and features.

I don't see why selling a new edition of Ultimate with all the existing DLC included with promises of new fighters would not be a massive hit for Nintendo and it would buy them time to figure out with direction to take the series beyond that....

Re: Ouch! Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Hit With Additional $10 Million Fine

Caryslan

@Meteoroid The PSP had a horrible attach rate and it got to the point where many games, even ones from popular IPs simply were not selling at the numbers they should have.

This was because it was easy to hack a PSP and run retail games the day they came out.

Sony tried to play cat and mouse with these hackers and they always lost.

Anyone who says Piracy is not a big deal is living in a fantasy world. A pirated copy of a game represents a lost sale and when these start adding up, its can cost developers and publishers money.

This is what happened to many games on the PSP, especially when the system started to approach the end of its life.

People simply pirated the game and saw little motivation to go out and buy a copy either from a store or off PSN.

Re: Talking Point: Are Nintendo's Exclusives Enough To Win A Next-Gen Handheld War?

Caryslan

Gaming history is littered with the broken shells of handheld consoles from Sega, Atari, Sony, NEC, Tiger, Bandai, and countless others that lay on the ground in front of Nintendo's throne in the handheld market.

I'm sorry, I have heard this song and dance for decades now. Back in the day, it was the Game Gear that was going to beat the Game Boy.

Or how about that time where the PSP was going to brutally slaughter the DS and Sony was going to lead handhelds like they had with home consoles.

To be fair, the Game Gear and PSP did decently enough in the market, but they were still blown away by the Nintendo handheld they were trying to beat.

My point is, countless companies have tried for decades to release more powerful handhelds that boast more features and they have all been defeated.

Much of this success is from the wide array of Nintendo's IPs that end up on these systems. Pokemon alone is going to move millions of hardware units.

But it's also because Nintendo has never strayed away from Gunpei Yokoi's idology that was created with the first Game Boy.

This something Nintendo has always understood and it's the reason why they have sat as the King of Handhelds since 1989.

They understand the portable market better than anyone, and know-how to build handheld gaming consoles that are cost-effective, have great games and are built with common-sense approaches like using SD Cards over specialized cards(Like what the PSP and Vita did)

I don't see the Stream Deck hurting Nintendo at all. It might be a success like the Game Gear and PSP were back in their day.

But I don't see it knocking Nintendo off their throne, especially once Nintendo starts talking about the successor to the Switch.

Re: Free Alternate Costumes Are Coming "Very Soon" To Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Caryslan

Wow..... One whole Alt Costume, that's gotta be impressive.....

Look, I know it's unfair to compare Smash to this game, but they are acting like giving an Alt Costume is a major deal when many games include Alt colors and Costumes for free.

Did you know Mario game with his Builder and Wedding Suit Alts in Ultimate!? And you don't even have to download anything!

I don't know if Nickelodeon is behind the lack of alt colors, but I find it funny that they are treating Alt Costumes and Colors as some kind of groundbreaking special feature.

No, it's been a special feature of fighting games since Street Fighter II: Championship Edition introduced Mirror Matches.

Some of these fighters in this trailer got nothing but alt colors.

What's the big deal? I can fire up Dragon Ball Fighter Z and have tons of color choices for Goku alone.

I honestly laugh at this game as he falls apart from the hype everyone gave it.

This is the Smash Killer? The savior who will put big bad Nintendo in their place in the Platform Fighter genre?

Well, they still have that item update coming up... You know, the one that adds items to the game?

Oh no, how will Smash ever compete with that?..

Re: Video: Hands-On With The 3DS Dragon Quest The West Never Got To Play

Caryslan

While it is sad that we never got the 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI in the west, I honestly can't blame Square Enix for not bringing it over.

The 3DS market basically collapsed quickly once the Switch arrived and sold insane numbers, and numerous games even major ones like Fire Emblem Echoes and Metroid: Samus Returns were not selling huge numbers and were overshadowed by the hype behind the Switch.

By the time Dragon Quest XI would have arrived in the west, the 3DS market were pretty much dead. The few games Nintendo was tossing at the platform like Fire Emblem Echoes, Metroid: Samus Returns, Beyond Oasis, and ports of Kirby's Epic Yarn and Luigi's Mansion were largely ignored and sold poorly.

Only Pokemon was able to keep selling and push 3DS hardware sales.

So in that regard, I don't blame Square Enix for not wanting to test the waters and localize a text-heavy RPG for a handheld that was one foot in the grave.

One other thing to consider here is that Nintendo was the publisher for Dragon Quest VII and VIII in North America. Maybe Square Enix did go to them and attempt to get the game published by them in NA only to be turned down.

After that, Square Enix looked at the market conditions and simply figured bringing the game over was not worth it.

It's easy to look at Square Enix and call them lazy hacks for not bringing this game over.

But look at the 3DS market during the window of time this game would have likely left Japan. The 3DS was pretty much dead by 2017 and 2018 before Nintendo put it out of its misery and buried it in 2019.

This sounds harsh, especially from a gamer who loves his 2DS even though I own a Switch.

But the cold hard truth is that the success of the Switch came at the expense of the 3DS and while Nintendo wanted them to co-exist for a time like what had happened with the GBA and DS or DS and 3DS, it simply did not happen.

The 3DS market simply fell apart the moment the Switch arrived and stole its thunder.

Re: Dragon Ball: The Breakers Is A Seven-Against-One Online Multiplayer Game Coming To Switch

Caryslan

@Mauzuri I am willing to bet Zamasu and Goku Black will be in the base game as well given their popularity.

I am hoping this extends to outside Earth like a Namekian trying to survive against Moro.

I would also love to see them a gameplay segment on Demon King Piccolo's rampage on Earth that predates Dragon Ball.

All that said, I think they focused on Frieza, Cell, and Buu first because those three are seen as the unholy Trinity and the three most iconic villains in the franchise.

Although Zamasu and Goku Black are close.

Re: Rumour: Warner Working On A Smash Bros. Imitator With Batman, Gandalf And, Er, Shaggy

Caryslan

@victordamazio Their video game assets run deeper the just Mortal Kombat.

They pretty much own most of Midway's IP as well as Atari Games' IPs(Since Midway bought them out back in the late 90s.

That is a large chunk of gaming history that they own, dating all the way back to the early 80s to 2009 when Midway went bankrupt.

It's not complete, but here's a list of game franchises Time Warner owns.

Mortal Kombat

Rampage

Root Beer Tapper

Gauntlet

Marble Madness

Primal Rage

Spy Hunter

Defender

Joust

Klax

Smash TV

NARC

Paperboy

The list honestly goes on. They own almost as many video game assets as Nintendo does.

Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now

Caryslan

My opinion has not changed, Metroid: Other M sucked.

I'm not even upset at seeing Samus venerable and having some form of mental trauma, I can live with that.

My issue is the borderline abusive relationship her and Adam has where he orders her not to use her Varia Suit when she goes into a super hot area.

It was a cheap gimmick that was added in so they could limit Samus' abilities.* without outright stripping her of them like in other Metroid games.

But it does not work and does not click with how Samus refers to Adam in Fusion.

Why would she want to honor anything with a jackass that treated her like dirt?

Also, the control scheme in this game blows and I don't understand why anyone thought a Wiimote only control scheme was a good idea, especially in a 3D game that forces you into FPS mode at certain time.

They could have at least added Nunchuck support.

Other aspects of the gameplay were terrible ideas like the removal of item pickups to restore weapons and health in favor of a weird focus system that forced Samus to stand around.

Other M deserves it place as the worst Metroid game ever made, and there is nothing redeeming about the game in my opinion.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Release Date And Pricing Revealed

Caryslan

I just noticed something, most of the cost for this expansion is from the Animal Crossing DLC.

Without it, the price of the expansion would have been ten bucks at most or they could have even added it to the current subscription with no price increase.

This is nothing but pure greed and Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves.

There is no defending this. Nintendo basically admitted that the N64 and Genesis games alone were not worth a massive price increase to the service.

Hence why they are forcing the Animal Crossing DLC on everyone to present the illusion of value.

But this is nothing but pure greed from Nintendo and they wonder why people just go download roms off the internet.

Maybe they should change their mascot to Wario. At least they would be upfront on how they offer their services.

Re: Video: Why Didn't Square Enix Port The Kingdom Hearts Collection To Switch?

Caryslan

I love how people blast Square Enix for being lazy when Nintendo's hardware design pretty much forces developers to jump through hoops they don't have to worry about on the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.

The Switch lacks a hard drive and relies on Cards for storage as opposed to discs other platforms use.

Most people in this comments section don't know a thing about game development. If we were handed a game and asked to port it to the Switch while being bound to budget, time, and hardware limitations, most of us would be on the floor sucking our thumbs in the fetal position.

My point is, people with actual experience in game development looked at the numbers and time required to port Kingdom Hearts to Switch and decided making the games run on a cloud was the best solution.

I saw MVG's video and he made it clear that it was possible to port KH I and II could be ported, but it might take too much time and money to make it work.

Look, I know Cloud Based versions is not the solution everyone wanted, but Square Enix could have not bothered bringing the games over at all.

This is the double edged sword of Nintendo's hardware. Yeah, it's unique, but it makes games hard to port without third parties having to jump through hoops to get games on Nintendo's systems.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!

Caryslan

I don't really care either way since I have never played a Kingdom Hearts game.

But he's popular, so I understand why he got it.

What I do think is kinda funny is that Square Enix now has four reps and three of them debuted on the PlayStation.

Either way, it's cool for Sora fans. I got my most wanted third party newcomer in the base roster with Simon Belmont.

Re: Feature: So, Who Will Be The Final Fighter In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Caryslan

For everyone who says Goku won't make it into Smash, keep in mind that nobody expected Banjo, Cloud, or Steve to make it in.

How many Mortal Kombat players expected the Alien or Predator in MK X?

My point is, nothing is totally impossible no matter how many Sakurai quotes people toss around.

Since Cloud dropped as DLC in Smash 4, I have learned to expect the unexpected because almost every DLC fighter has been someone that was different from all the leaks and predictions.

Goku is unlikely, but he's not impossible. If Nintendo, Namco Bamdai, Toei, and other companies want him in because they see him printing money, I don't see anything stopping him.

Also, Goku's Final Smash would be the Spirit Bomb.

Upon activation, a short cut scene plays where Goku gathers energy from his allies to form a Spirit Bomb then drops it on everyone.

Re: Rumour: Konami Reportedly Reviving Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid, And Silent Hill

Caryslan

@Expa0 Why does everyone dump on MercurySteam and the Lords of Shadows games?

I honestly felt Lords of Shadows 1 was not just the best 3D Castlevania game, it was a pretty solid game overall with fun(if close to GoW III's gameplay) and a solid story.

As for Mirror of Fate, I thought that was a pretty good game as well.

Lords of Shadows 2 was a massive flop, but I get the impression Konami was not really giving Mercurysteam any real support at that point.

I think MercurySteam is a great developer and it's obvious they are talented. Their work on Metroid proves this, and it's rare Nintendo lets Western developers play in their sandbox with their IPs.

My point is, I think the Lords of Shadows games, at least I and Mirror of Fate get unfairly judged and often over stupid reasons like "It does not feel like Castlevania" or "They rebooted the storyline and changed the characters"

Taken on their own merits, both are solid games.

If MercurySteam was given the chance to do a new Metroidvania game in the Castlevania series, I would be excited.

Their work on Metroid speaks for itself.

Re: Best Castlevania Games On Nintendo Consoles

Caryslan

I hate to say this, but I find Rondo of Blood to be a bit overrated. Is it a good game? Yes. Is it better then Super Castlevania IV or Bloodlines? No. Hell, it's not even better then Castlevania III.

It seems like alot of people gloss over its flaws and act like this is a perfect game.

The Branching Path system? Castlevania III handled that much better and did not require you stumbling onto random paths by falling into random pits. Or being knocked off a path you wanted to go on because a random enemy knocked you off a ledge.

Richter himself felt so limited and clunky to play compared to SC IV Simon or even John Morris in Bloodlines. He felt closer to the 8-Bit era Castlevania characters, and it just feels like a step back.

My point is, I think Rondo is an important game for the series and its a good game. Maybe my point of view if colored by the fact that I did not play it until the Wii years after I played all the other 8 and 16 bit games including the X68000 one.

But to call it the best Castlevania game to ever show up on a Nintendo system?

No, Super Castlevania IV and Castlevania III are much better then it, and I would even argue Bloodlines is the better game.

Which is another thing that bothers me. Who decided to rank Bloodlines so low? It's almost criminal to see such a gem not even crack the top 10.

Re: Random: Watch This Unboxing Of A Rare Transparent Green 2DS

Caryslan

I still think the OG 2DS is the most comfortable handheld in the DS family to hold, and among handhelds is only rivaled by the OG GBA and PSP.

It just feels so natural in the hand, and the buttons feel right.

The only shame is that you can't play SNES games off eshop on the OG 2DS.

Otherwise, I love my 2DS.

Re: Rumour: Huge Nvidia Database Leak Lists Unannounced Third-Party Games

Caryslan

Street Fighter 6 is a shock because I thought I read somewhere that it was supposed to be a PS5 exclusive.

I will be happy if it comes to the Switch and Xbox.

I know Sony payed to keep SFV on the PS4 only, but it never made sense to keep that game off other platforms and I'm willing to bet Capcom lost some money from that deal.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Will Expand Its Switch Online Service With Game Boy And Game Boy Color Titles

Caryslan

A word of advice to everyone, if you want to play an underrated classic by Miyamoto, then check out Mole Mania when it hits the service.

Its an offbeat game with some great gameplay that makes you solve puzzles to clear room.

Muddy Mole's adventure is one of the best games on the system, and belongs in the same conversation with the heavy hitters like the Super Mario Land games, Link's Awakening, Metroid II, the Donkey Kong Land games, Donkey Kong 94, etc.-

Re: Two New Characters Have Been Revealed For Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

Caryslan

@link3710 It's the same reason why Pac-Man has his classic design or why Cloud was picked over Cecil or Terra as the Final Fantasy rep in Smash Bros.

The 80's Turtles are likely the most popular versions of the characters even to this day, and they are trying to cater to fans of the 80's Turtles by using these versions over ones from more modern TV shows.

Since the whole game is banking on appealing to Nick fans young and old, it makes the most sense to use characters and desgins from the 80's Ninja Turtles cartoon.

It even gives them some indirect cross-promotion with the new Ninja Turtles game that's coming out this year.

Plus, maybe they have plans to either reboot or revive the 80's cartoon and bring it back. Given how big reviving old franchises is, especially specific aspects or shows, that's not out of the question.

I mean, there's talk right now of Batman the Animated Series and the DCAU being revived with new shows on HBO Max.

Who honestly knows at this point.

Re: Court Orders Popular ROM Website To "Destroy" All Of Its Unauthorised Nintendo Games

Caryslan

If only Nintendo spent the time and money they wasted on this lawsuit and used those resources to add Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, and maybe GameCube games to the Switch online, maybe fans would be less upset with them and less inclined to go download roms off the internet.

Nintendo is their own worst enemy when it comes to putting out their old games on modern hardware.

Re: Poll: Can You Still Find Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. And Super Mario 3D All-Stars?

Caryslan

This is a bit off-topic, but as a veteran of the console wars between Sega and Nintendo, I find it amusing to see an Alex Kidd game sitting right beside a Mario game on the shelf.

Yeah, I know Sonic games have been sold alongside Nintendo games for years, but Alex Kidd is the one who was inspired more by Mario and marketed as Sega's first mascot.

Now, the two mascots are side by side on the same shelf.

Re: Every Nintendo Switch Online SNES Game Ranked

Caryslan

Donkey Kong Country 2 is better then Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island.

Here's how I would have ranked the top 5.

5. Yoshi's island

4. Super Mario World

3. Super Metroid

2. Donkey Kong Country 2

1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
