Nintendo has added not one, not two, but three more Kirby games to its Switch Online Super Nintendo service.
The catch is they're technically existing releases but are the 'SP' versions. They include Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dream Land 3 and Kirby's Dream Course. This also bumps the Switch Online SNES application to Version 3.3.0.
Nintendo of America (via Twitter) - "Three #SuperNES titles are live for #NintendoSwitchOnline members! #Kirby Super Star Meta Knight's revenge! Kirby's Dream Land 3 Set difficulty to Easy Breezy! Kirby's Dream Course Dance along with Kirby! Secret modes are all unlocked in these special versions of the games."

This latest update follows on from the one at the end of last month which Congo's Caper, Rival Turf! (Rushing Beat) and Umihara Kawase to the Super Nintendo / Super Famicom libraries.

Removed - unconstructive
I wish you could hide the SP games. Kind of a thing I'm never going to use and they just create needless clutter on what's already a pretty messy UI.
This is the worst update yet. Usually they include something new with these SP releases.
What a great way to celebrate Kirby's 30th anniversary! They totally couldn't have done Kirby's Super Star Stacker, or anything of the sort!
Came to say how cool this is, now I feel super unhip. What is the difference in the SP games?
I wish they would update the SP releases to be removed. They're utterly useless most of the time, and a bog to find what I'm looking for the rest.
Uhh... Yay?
@JasmineDragon SP Releases are just the game pre-loaded with a save file that's already basically completed.
The special editions they put on NSO are a bit weird; if they added cool features that would neat, but just making it easier is very unexciting.
@Lizuka @link3710 I agree about the clutter(why can't sp editions be part of the original icon?) but at least it's easy to manually sort however you want; I always just put the games I care about at the bottom.
Oh, Lord..... That's it?
@Lizuka What I did is reorganize them so all the first party Nintendo games and actually good third party games are organized by release date in neat rows. Then I put all the SP “games” in rows to create a wall between the good stuff, and all the garbage shovelware they’ve added.
Can we get an SP version of Star Fox 64 that unlocks all playable vehicles in multiplayer? I already got all the medals on the original N64 and on the 3DS
Less filler content in the rumored direct is all this is to me tbh. I do need to beat the legit games though
Fun fact: SP stands for stiffed patrons.
I miss the days NES, Super NES and Game Boy games were found in stores brand new. Now it’s difficult to even find used copies for good prices.
@Lizuka The SP games live below all the other games on my list, out of sight. Except for SMB2...that game earned a place below the SP games.
Please don't be the update for the month...
Well that’s kinda unexpected and cute. Meta Knight’s Revenge is pretty easy to get to in the game though, but I guess any time spared is for the better. But why not include a version with everything unlocked for Super Star?
I’m also not familiar with Easy Breezy Mode. Does this remove the annoying collectable requirements in Dream Land 3?
I own these already but I suppose this is ok for those that may have missed out on them.
Oh thank heavens I couldn't beat all these notoriously hard Kirby games.
I wish they’d add a smoothing filter in the graphics options.
Technically nothing. It is three existing games and it is pathetic.
And I still have to stare at that godawful border.
Definitely signing up again to rent these titles to play super easy mode! Haha..no..
We finally did it folks, we got the SP versions...of only Kirby games....that we didn't want in the first place....
These 3 were on my bucket list. Thank you nintendo now my life is complete.
I just can't play these old NES, SNES, MEGA DRIVE games anymore. I played them a lot in my 12...15 years...but my tolerance for old games is really low these days. They don't amuse me, they don't captivate me, they don't mean anything to me anymore. The only super old game I still play is Snk vs Capcom Card Battle by Neo Geo Pocket (nintendo switch).
I never played these nes..snes games on my NSO. And I don't think I ever will.
SP… nooo.. deflated
Sigh... What Nintendo COULD have added to the SNES NSO app today to celebrate Kirby:
Kirby's Super Star Stacker
Kirby's Avalanche
YAY! Three totally new games that are totally going to complete your life now that there on the service! Great way to celebrate Kirby Nintendo!
So instead of actually releasing Kirby's Super Star Stacker outside Japan for once, they just dumped a bunch of 100% saves on the service. Nintendo...you didn't even try with this one. Kirby deserves better.
@Kyloctopus Both are 100% saves and nothing more. Same with Dream Course. There's also a Kirby's Adventure SP version they released a while back that did the same.
I hate to be negative but I just don't care about these
At least this make sense for Kirby Superstar, it was really annoying having to re-unlock Samurai Kirby, Milky Way Wishes, The Revenge of Meta Knight, The Great Cave Offensive, and the Arena again after replacing the cmos battery on my Super NES cartridge. Having all those mini-games unlock and kept them unlock is a blessing.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Kirby's Avalanche is already on NSO under a different name. It's called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.
I can’t believe I pay for this service. I feel duped.
@Rykdrew To each their own, but the age of a game has nothing to do with my enjoyment of a game. There are many NES and SNES games I enjoy much more than some bloated modern day titles, and yes there are definitely some older games that I don't enjoy at all.
@kingbk At least the „stupid“ service isn’t illegal …
You know what would have been a better celebration? Adding Game Boy family systems to the service so Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Dream Land 2, Kirby's Pinball Land, Kirby's Block Ball, Kirby's Star Stacker, Nightmare in Dream Land, and The Amazing Mirror could be enjoyed by gamers young and old.
It's fitting as well since Kirby debuted on the Game Boy.
What's the point of these again?
@TKundNobody Downloading roms for a dead system is a fantasy crime.
@symmy this just shows that you live in a fantasy world. As long as the company owns the games (with copyright or otherwise) it’s a real crime even if the systems are dead.
It’s a shame that we can’t buy roms for old systems for a small fee or that company’s gift some roms to advertise newer games.
And I know without those Rom sites we wouldn’t be able to play some of the old games. But it’s still illegal …
@kingbk
Yes, it's always cheaper to steal things. All Stores are "stupid services" if you put it that way.
@TKundNobody You could pay for single games on Wii U Virtual Console, but Nintendo fans didn’t want to do that so Nintendo had to rethink their distribution and NSO is the result.
im glad we can always band together and kick nso down for thinking we're impressed by being drip fed nes/snes games
Everyone complains but most are probably going to keep subscribed anyway either for the online play or because Nintendo makes a "just good enough" announcement that will roll out around September when most subscriptions will end.
Yes I'll be one of them, but that'll be because of Splatoon 3 for me. Hey, there's that September catch, I suppose.
@Bass_X0 I think a lot of people liked it. There are many requests for VC on switch. But won’t happen. And Wii U / 3DS eshop shut down bringing VC to end.
The main complain for some people that the prices were too high.
@TKundNobody Get on your high horse all you want, dude. I subscribe to the service, but admit that there are still many NES and SNES that are never coming to it and there are no other ways to play them. Sorry, not sorry.
I predicted this in jest when they announced the last update! XD
Never change, Nintendo.
I'm kinda digging this. Only because now it has the second set of multiplayer stages unlocked for Dream Course. Something that's kind of difficult to do. I have done it on the SNES, but now I have an easier way to play them with my wife on the Switch. Dream Course has seriously one of the best multiplayer modes like ever, and it's a very underrated gem of a game as well.
@Serpenterror I mean they're both Puyo games but I prefer the visuals and music on Kirby's Avalanche to Dr Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine
I had missed that umihara kawase was now on jap snes olnine.. that's a great game
So glad I didn't pay for this rubbish. I may as well play all these old games, including old Wii-U games, on my PC. May skip the next Nintendo console.
@kingbk sooooo it’s stupid because you pirate the proprietary games that one would get as an incentive to be in the subscription service?
Huh?
@Magrane Yeah I almost thought he was joking at first. Such a cliche comment at this point.
I just think these SP versions are so pointless. Who's actually playing them? I don't. I bundle them all together and put them at the bottom of the list. Such a weird waste of time to even put these things together and upload them to the service. 🤷
@AG_Awesome There is one, isn't there? I'd rather play them in their original, pixelated state though, much prefer that to fake smoothing.
I would prefer that they would finally add GB games to the service
@TKundNobody No, you're paying an extortionate amount for a subpar service that Nintendo barely seem bothered about delivering value for.
Of all the things to get moral about, playing 20+ year old ROMs is amongst the weirdest. These games had their time and Nintendo are playing you by charging what they do. People within the gaming community always talk about voting with their wallet, yet they tell Nintendo time and time again, 'yes, you may charge me out the ass for these dinosaur titles.'
@Maximumbeans maybe I enjoy playing the snes games again? And mobile? And for 9 bucks a year (NSO+EP) I can’t care less.
I dislike that just a rental service and would like to buy them or keep them after the sub.
And if someone likes those old titles and wants to play them again the prices for old games on eBay & co are sometimes higher than 10 year of NSO. So i can’t see that it’s too expensive.
Just missing some good games (Mario rpg) and being rental is disappointing.
@TKundNobody And maybe others enjoy playing the games again but don't want to pay a ridiculous sum for these ancient titles. You're responding with defence of your own desire to play these games as if I'm denouncing playing old games. I'm not, in fact the opposite is true.
Actually, I'm confused with your response in general. You were sniffing at people who use ROMs but now you're saying that renting the games is disappointing, which is what the Switch Expansion Pack essentially is. So...which is it?
NSO is an example of how Switch was a unfulfilled value proposition. I thought it would be a portable Wii, but instead they try to rent out virtual console and sell old Wii games for $60. Gaming of a contemporary standard and retro emulation is better served by my PC.
@Maximumbeans because I dislike a rental service I have to embrace rom piracy?
@TKundNobody No, that isn't what I'm saying and I think you know that. You were making your own comparison when you said, RE using ROMs, 'at least the "stupid" service isn't illegal.' That's a really weak point when:
We're not talking about leaking Xenoblade Chronicles 3 onto the internet here, we're talking about downloading Kirby instead of hunting down a working SNES and cartridge, something that a couple of private sellers would gleefully jack the price up for.
@Alex79uk Sadly there isn’t. There 4:3, pixel perfect, and Scanline. It’s the same that they used for the nes and snes mini.
However, there’s a hack someone did for the mini consoles where you can pick the scanline option and then the mod removes the blur Nintendo added. I think they look perfect with that option. It’s how I play them on my snes mini every time and they look great on the HD tvs with it. It also doesn’t compromise the original pixel look very much at all.
So since the mod simply takes what is already there and basically gives it a “fourth” option, I feel like Nintendo could do the same and just expand the visual options with that one addition.
Well this feels kind of pointless.
I suppose having Kirby's Dreamland 3 on a far easier difficulty than its already easy difficulty could make it a lot more possible to achieve getting that super rare "Perfect" screen that almost no one has ever been able to unlock because of how challenging it is to actually beat every boss in Boss Rush mode without taking any damage not even once.
I love Kirby Superstar so much I already have 3 100% files completed! This is fine for others tho.
Give us Mario RPG damn it nintendo!
like seriously Nintendo, why are you guys torturing us by hogging all the best SNES games to yourselves and giving us crappy games in future releases? come on! give us Megaman X series, Battletoads/DoubleDragon: the ultimate team, Chrono Tigger, The Secret of Evermore
its seriously as though they are trying to sow discontent among their subscribers. this is worse than nothing.
I mean I guess that's pretty good. That's what I would be saying if I hadn't let my Subscription run out and now just emulate every NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Switch, Pocket, Color, Advance, DS and 3DS game in a huge category on my PC. So basically every Nintendo game going. Guess they didn't want my money 😂
How about instead of these SP titles, try and get the titles that are glaringly missing from the selection, like Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, Super Smash TV, Alien vs Predator, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Mario RPG, etc. sighs I know Chrono Trigger is highly unlikely since it is still being sold, but this collection just doesn't feel complete.
@AG_Awesome THIS. The Nintendo and 64 games look alright but the 16 bit games all look like ***** if you’re not playing in handheld mode.
@KayFiOS Thats probably one of the only SuspendPoint “SP” versions I’d be okay with! Lol
I don't mind these SP versions, they can be a fun way to see more of games that I haven't got the skill/time to complete properly. I agree with others, I tend to group them all together as I don't think I've spent a lot of time with them.
I also wish I could hide these. But then I haven't touched the SNES/NES apps in ages.
@Clyde_Radcliffe That's good but yeah since Sega bought the Puyo IP only their version was able to be re-release. Nintendo will need to pay licensing cost to Sega if they want Avalanche on NSO. Though all the Kirby contents in Avalanche belongs to Nintendo, the Puyo assets belongs to Sega now.
@Lizuka Agreed. I don't care for them. Would rather get a NES Remix port.
@Serpenterror Oh I didn't know that
I loaded these up and I feel like a chump having everything unlocked for me like a child, especially since I've completed two out of the three games already in this update (not Dream Course because I suck at it)
@SuperCharr @link3710 Ewww. Thanks for the info!
@Lizuka I wish they were bundled with the game itself. Open the game and be presented with options: Original, SP 1, SP 2, etc kind of a thing. Because I agree, it is super cluttered and will only get worse. Like the eShop though, I don't expect anything to change.
When are they going to put Chorno Tigger Super mario rpg, final fantasy 1 2 and 3 and Secret of the Evermore
Please bring out Illusion of Gaia
I wish we had the ability to hide ANY game we wasn't interested in on the NES and SNES apps.
So glad I can pay a monthly fee for the opportunity to play Kirby but even easier.
@TKundNobody just because something is illegal doesn't mean its immoral.
You defending Nintendo taking away game ownership is why their next console will have all their games behind five year installments of $1,000. No option to buy anything separately.
But poor widdle billion dollar company Nintendo doesn't get to control their games with an iron fist.
@Maximumbeans It's hysterical, and I have to ask. Is it anyone other than Nintendo fans who hate emulations/roms? I never find any Sony or Microsoft fan who thinks piracy or emulation is the devil like Nintendo's fanbase does.
This level of slavish fawning and celebrating a company for taking away game ownership is very abnormal, ain't it?
@kingbk if a subscription service has to lock content to the subscription, then it's an objectively bad "service".
NSO does just that... when Sony and Microsoft allow individual purchases of their legacy content.
Wonder what NSO lovers think of Adobe? Surely they aren't just massive hypocrites who handwave away any and all flaws with Nintendo.
Eh, I own Super Star twice although it's a great game. I don't have anyone to play Dream Course with, and Dreamland 3 is one of my least favorite entries alongside Mass Attack.
And yes, Kirby is so difficult that it makes Contra look like child's play in comparison. We toooootallly needed that. * Rolls eyes *
@Screen Ha!
Yeah that’s boring.
SP additions are not titles
Nintendo stop trolling your base, it's actually very sad if you think about it.
@ThomastheTankEngine i dont defend Nintendo and won't care if they loose money through bad business decisions, because its their fault. But I dislike the propaganda for doing a crime.
maybe you need an example with a non digital product: you suggests that its OK to steal an old iPhone if the new iPhone is a bad product. and that's ridiculous.
@ThomastheTankEngine I just don’t understand it. I think piracy is wrong as an alternative for buying a brand-new title, especially when it’s simply because someone doesn’t want to pay. But when we’re talking about freaking SNES ROMs…cmon man. That’s like saying it’s wrong to download a PDF of Dune instead of buying the book from a secondhand shop. Who the hell actually cares?
@TKundNobody "you suggests that its OK to steal an old iPhone if the new iPhone is a bad product. and that's ridiculous."
Not at all. If you want to run with the iPhone example, it's like going to someone who can build exact copies on an old iPhone and taking one for free because Apple are trying to sell the same old iPhone for the price of a new one. That's what it's like, though the analogy still struggles a bit.
You're dodging the point that in this context, the 'new' product is the old product. They just want you to pay a premium for it whilst they show the bare minimum in effort for their customer.
Honestly, it feels like you're splitting hairs. You won't defend Nintendo and you are openly agreeing that the service essentially sucks, yet you're still trying to moralise about pirating ROMs that are older than half of the people using TikTok. This is such a weak and low-impact example of piracy being used, and it's being used to counter a crappy service from a company making disdainful decisions, so why bother putting up the fight at all? You think the service sucks? This is currently the alternative.
The absolute snark in this comment section!! 😂😂😂🤣🤣
Wake me up when they add REAL games and not games with noob cheats.
@TKundNobody I didn’t say that at all of course the Nintendo fanboy has to lie to prove his illogical points.
What I am saying, is why do you think Nintendo pulling an Adobe with classic games should be applauded?
Why should I buy this service when I could spend money on games that I am allowed to keep, like legacy games from Sony or Microsoft?
@Maximumbeans nobody except Nintendo simps. I used to think piracy of new games was wrong, but I’m okay with people pirating all of Nintendo’s games due to their greed.
Nintendo is the last company deserving of your money.
@ThomastheTankEngine I can understand why you’d feel that way now. Me, I still want to support their new game efforts where I can, but you and I can differ on that just fine. I totally get how some people feel like you do these days.
@Maximumbeans me personally, I’m not going to pirate their new games, it’s too much effort, and not buying gives them the same amount, but I just don’t want to support a company that takes every opportunity it can to spit in the face of the consumer.
I just think piracy is wrong when it comes to any company that isn’t Nintendo, but piracy of any Nintendo product is always morally correct. The Switch era of greed from Nintendo is insane.
I got a switch in November my nephews have 1 i am in my mid 40s and these sp are just a glorified game gene whe...let me play super mario the way i remember it..my nephews should play it that way like some of us old timers did
Would be interesting if Konami releases Mystical Ninja, which was surprisingly a memorable SNES game with impressive stages, music and bosses. Speaking of Konami, they also did a Final Fight style game with Batman Returns for SNES as well. Would be cool if it’s possible to get the rights to rerelease, if they can get past licensing issues.
more fun if they added action replay/game genie on a update
@garfreek These comment sections are absolute gold, whenever they update the Online I like to pull up a chair and watch everyone stamping their feet. Never disappoints.
@mikegamer What are the REAL games out of curiosity? There's a few I'd love to see no doubt but hey, licensing issues and all that, plus some of these old companies are long dead.
@WiltonRoots There are PLENTY of games that Nintendo wholly owns without licensing issues. There is NO reason not to release those.
@mikegamer This is very true, but which ones is what I'm asking?
@Lizuka yip.. Or put them in a folder...
@DoomGuyBFG I see this week as Nintendo wanting to release something but not having anything to release. Just because you can remember the SNES having some great games doesn’t mean that Nintendo has access to them or are waiting to release them for events later such as Christmas.
