Nintendo's Direct presentation earlier this week was loaded with all sorts of announcements, and one of the highlights was the segment announcing a new batch of N64 games for the Switch Online's Expansion Pack service.
While GoldenEye 007 is arguably the highlight for many Switch owners out there, we're still curious to know exactly what our community here on Nintendo Life is most excited about, even if you don't have a subscription. We've also added in the Japan-only NSO release Harvest Moon 64.

If I had the service, it would be pokemon stadium and golden eye.
I've played the majority of the new Mario party titles (from Wii onwards) but never did play the originals so looking forward to giving them a go.
Oh and I've heard Golden Eye is meant to be decent
Still waiting on Diddy Kong Racing!
it's a pitty that we never get the harvest moon games
Interesting to see the results of this poll, gonna be close. 😂
Maybe I'm a bad person but I just can't bring myself to be excited by any of those games. I feel like N64 games for the most part have the interesting distinction of aging less well than both earlier console games and later console games. Even wonderful games like Mario 64 are also a bit hideous and have janky controls. If we got some GameCube games on expansion pack, I'd buy it in a second, but currently it's a pass. Goldeneye I never played so can't comment. If I had to choose, I might pick snowboarding because I have fond memories of it. Also, where are our gameboy games on normal NSO??
Goldeneye since it's coming out soon. The Stadiums coming over is pretty exciting too.
Give me Donkey Kong 64!! But honestly I think the reason they haven't put it in NSO it's because it still a glitchy mess that can't be properly emulated... yet.
So are they change the mini games in Mario Party so people won't sue them??
@_fatto_katto_ It was fine on Wii U.
Hoping for, but not betting on, online multiplayer for Mario Party.
Would’ve been nice if Stadium had Pokemon roms included to play those game and import Pokemon from them, but that would require an effort we’ve never seen from Nintendo services.
Definitely MP & PS. A bit sad we didn’t got t. Good rare games: DK64 & DKR.
1080 and bokumono for me.
@ketrac Doesn’t the service as a whole have online multiplayer for all games that had multiplayer in the original release? Across NES/SNES/N64/Mega Drive? To my knowledge it would be a first if these games didn’t.
In answer to the article though, I don’t know… because I’ve actually never played any of them, except Goldeneye, and I’m not really a fan of FPS. I’d probably vote for one of the Mario Party games, but even then, I don’t know what distinguishes those three from each other - I’ve only played MP5 & Super Mario Party in the past.
@FishyS Never say never, however, they have never released GameCube virtual console games. I doubt they will start with NSO. Even Super Mario Sunshine needed to rework the control schema due to the differences with the controller.
Ports and remakes are the best we are going to get. This Direct gave us GameCube ports and remakes of HM: A Wonderful Life and Tales of Symphonia.
Used to get a migraine playing Goldeneye with my friends.
The real greatest game on the N64 was firing a little man out of a cannon and into a wall in Pilotwings.
@FishyS At the risk of angering N64 fanboys, I think the system has aged much worse than the PlayStation and Sega Saturn.
I can go back to many PS1 games today and still enjoy them, but I don't feel the same way for most N64 games.
I also wanted to see the Game Boy family join NSO especially with the 3DS and Wii U eShops both closing in a few months, cutting off legal access to the only modern day releases of Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance.
Plus, I will just say it. The GBA's library blows the N64 out of the water.
Since Nintendo and Microsoft are buddies through there pal Rare I feel like they could've done more with their friendship. I can understand why Banjo Kazooie and GoldenEye are brought to their platforms, because they both profit from this deal. Still, where are Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Jet Force Gemini, Conker's Bad Fur Day (please?) and Perfect Dark? Or am I asking too much here?
N64 games still feel great to me! Love popping in games like Mario 64, Banjo, original Mario Parties, Ocarina of Time and many others!
Still screw this service though and I still won't sub to it
It bears mentioning that Pilotwings 64 never appeared on Virtual Console and was strategically ignored in Smash Bros games, so it’s surprising to see it finally resurface for the first time since 1996. That said, the answer is Goldeneye. I’ve still never played an FPS I like as much, and it’s a minor miracle that it’s finally getting rereleased.
Micheif makers, snowboarding kids, diddy kong racing and donkey kong 64. Thats what im excited about. But they are not on nintendos list
I mean...I'm somewhat looking forward to the Mario Parties, but that's about it. Was expecting way more from the NSO Expansion at the Direct, but they pretty much gave us the bare minimum. I thought a Game Boy library was a given, but it was nowhere in sight. At the bare minimum, I would've liked to have seen Smash Bros. 64, Banjo-Tooie, and Diddy Kong Racing, but now we know we'll have to wait at least 9 months before we possibly get one of those, which sucks. Still no Super Mario RPG, either. Worst Direct we've had in years, to be honest.
@ketrac with varied degree of quality.
Mario Party online would also require being able to reconnect, saving/suspension of games, in order to not be a complete mess.
I'm happy to see all the coming entries, but we need the original Smash Bros up there pronto.
For me a dead heat between Pilotwings 64 and Goldeneye, both games I never expected to see on the Switch.
It WOULD be Harvest Moon 64 if it were in English but Mario Party 3.
For me it's frustrating that the core subscription is being left behind. There's so many more NES and SNES games that they could release...
Now, if only we could get the Star Wars games.
Pilotwings 64, although also scared to find it's aged horribly... I hope not, as Wave Race held up well.
”1080 Snowboarding”. Played it more than any other Nintendo 64-game back in the days. I was unbeatable playing ”Golden forest” as Ricky Winterborn.
Man, I really feel for all these people voting goldeneye. They are going to be so disappointed when they get their hands on the n64 version again. It has aged terribly. I'll check out the xbox version that fixes the controls and framerates, but I didn't spend that long with perfect dark xbox port and thats the superior game.
Personally I can't wait for 1080 snowboarding
1080 pilotwings and excitebike 64 are all amazing games and with the addition of goldeneye I’m definitely upgrading my NSO really want one of the N64 controller’s
Pokemon Stadium
GoldenEye. Because while you can emulate it, from experience I’ve learned that it takes some finagling to get running particularly well. While Nintendo’s emulation history for this service isn’t flawless, they obviously know it’s a big deal, so I expect they’ll be keen to get it right.
None since a toaster can emulate these games without paying $50 a year to rent them.
I have all of them in their original hardware, so i'm not excited at all.
I want hard to get games like Mischief Makers, Flying Dragon, Clayfighter 63 1/3 Director's cut, Hybrid Heaven... Not the ones that i already own.
No Brainer....... GoldenEye of course! And on the next direct, confirmation of a Cowabunga style collection (physical and digital) of NES Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, SNES SW, ESB and ROTJ. Followed by a collection of N64 Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron and Gamecube Rogue Squadron 2 and 3.
Still not signed up to this service as I think it's a tad on the pricey side. But maybe in the future I'll dip in to it for the odd month or 2.
We played mario party 2 on the N64 last summer. It sas suprisingly good. Holds up really well. So I’m looking forward to that very much! Excite bike 64 is also a very good game.
Much as GoldenEye is more of a classic (and I will play it to bits!), I’ve gone Pilotwings 64. It was my first 64 game I got (pack-in copy of ISS64 aside); so I do have nostalgia. But, it’s also arguable a game that hasn’t been replaced or bettered along that way. I don’t think the SNES or 3DS ones hold a candle to the scope and handling of Paradigm’s work on the N64, and it has a chill vibe that is very rare even to this day. Because of this I think it still stands up pretty well! Exploring the details of those 4 maps (particularly the large “mini USA” one) will take up lots of my time, and the Hang Glider music is so chill and calming, can’t wait!
I voted for GoldnEye but really looking forward to 1080 Snowboarding and Pilotwings 64 too
Mario Party 3, because that's one of only a couple of Mario Parties that I've never played. As a kid, I didn't own it and just watched others play it. It's so odd how it was never available on Wii or Wii U Virtual Console.
Said it in a previous comment but for me it's Goldeneye and Mario Party 2.
Here's hoping we get Banjo Tooie and Perfect Dark later down the line.
I would be excited if Nintendo didn’t hide these games behind a service! There should be an option to subscribe to wide variety of games, and also an option to purchase the games separately! Most people wanna buy and own what they buy. NSO will disappear one day and so will the games with it.
I really don't care for N64, a bit disappointed we aren't getting a new system this year.
1080 and Goldeneye were standard for me back in the day. With Diddy Kong racing, top gear racing, beetle adventure racing, Mario kart, rogue squadron and wave race.
@FishyS Nintendo 64/PSX are kinda comparable to the NES. There were some great games on them but there was a lot of crap as developers tried to learn to work with a new dimension.
I'm excited for the Stadium games and absolutely cannot wait to play 1080 and Goldeneye for the first time, but the Mario Party's are what made this announcement for me. It's hard to choose between 2 and 3 but I'll probably just go with 2 for being the more widely talked about of them. Cannot wait for it to come out though, I am going to play them so, SO much.
Why the doubling.. 1 mario party and one stadium... would like body harvest and diddy kong
just got my joy coms repaired so I'll leave mario part to my pc, I guess goldeneye since I've never played it but weak weak selection
@Caryslan I agree with you 100% on everything you said! We need the GameBoy games (why did they choose Genesis instead?!), and the n64 games just look so bad to me on the switch!
I played GoldenEye and 1080 on the 64 but honestly neither of them grabbed me. I was too busy playing Top Gear Rally. So I'm most excited about Excitebike 64 out of these
I’m more excited for 1080 and Exitebike, but 007 was a nice surprise. Though the different versions between the Switch and Xbox is kinda weird.
Still hoping for more Rare games on NSO, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark and Conker in particular.
Pilotwings 64, but i already own it on N64 cart.
Getting Goldeneye on Game Pass.
People who already own Rare Replay on Xbox, will get Goldeneye 100% free to keep forever.
@SwagaliciousJohnson and blast corps?
I voted Pokémon Stadium 2 (would've voted both if I could), because I'm real curious how they're going to handle this one since I'm the original you were forced to use your own Pokémon, since the rental Pokémon you were given really weren't that good. So with just those I don't think you really are able to win overly much.
So I'm really curious if they're going to give you new rental Pokémon, if they have Game Boy NSO planned, or what have you. These games are still a ways off though so we'll see in due time.
If it weren't for all that though, I would've voted Mario Party. Any of them. All three are good!
100% Pilotwings 64. This is the first rerelease since it came out 26 year ago. Having a better resolution and steady frame rate will be fantastic for this game. Needless to say I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile.
I guess Pilotwings 64. Most of them are multiplayers, which I don't do, and Pokémon Stadium is pointless to me without Game Boy game integration. Original hardware with the Transfer Pak is the only way to play those games imo.
@KryptoniteKrunch The Japan direct said 2023, so probably not that soon unfortunately
Goldeneye, of course. The contrarians here love pointing out that a 25 year old game has aged, but, in all honesty, as much as the game has aged, that adds a different layer to the game rather than detracts it. Same thing could be said for Quake. I’ve played Goldeneye within the last 2, 3 years, and am immensely looking forward to playing it online. The real key to Goldeneye is that it was a party game in the costume of an fps. If only modern shooter games understood this concept… I know 343 not understanding this killed Halo mp, but I digress… Hopefully Goldeneye comes before the year closes out.
Outside that, man, I’m looking forward to those Pokémon Stadium minigames. In all honesty, I’m fairly certain I played the minigames more than the base game itself. Without your own Pokémon to use in-game, it’s sort of a weird inclusion, but who cares when you’ve got those fantastic minigames?
Since Gamecube was my first home console (we didn't have tv), 1080 is my most anticipated one. Only Conker's Bad Furday is higher up. But that might still be a while...
I did play Goldeneye with friends at their homes, but the highest bar for console fps for me is still set by Timesplitters 2, later 3.
Gotta be Mario Party 3 for me. I like the concept of Goldeneye well enough, but I never really am able to pick a control scheme that is right for me. Maybe that’ll change this go around. I’ve heard that 3 is the best one, so I’m excited to give it a whirl.
MP3, I was jealous some people we knew had it while I only had 2 and liked 3 way more. Granted, that’s 20 years ago but looking forward to it!
Pokemon Stadium then 1080.
If I owned some N64 controllers for my Switch, then I would be excited to play the Mario Party games again. But since I would be using Joycons, I will not touch those games. If your controllers don't have drift now, they definitely will once you and some friends start playing Mario Party.
I'm excited to revisit both 1080 and Pilot Wings, I don't think Goldeneye has aged well but I'm still excited to share this groundbreaking game with my two sons who have never even tried it.
For me, it's probably the Mario Party trilogy.
I'm very excited for Goldeneye and Pilot Wings.
That said, I would be just as excited for Diddy Kong Racing and DK64.
I would be excited, but the inability to remap controller buttons makes the service mostly a non-starter. The N64 Era really doesn't hold a lot of nostalgia for me to begin with, but poor controls makes a lot of games painful to play.
@SteamEngenius Have you ever actually emulated N64 games? It's notoriously one of the hardest systems to emulate. Until a few years ago, everything but the most popular first-party stuff was basically guaranteed to have at least visual glitches.
Mario Party 3 hasn't been available since the N64 and I love that series. I've always lamented that it got the shaft on the Wii shop. Way excited.
I loved Goldeneye back in the day and Perfect Dark even more. I have the Perfect Dark remake on Xbox but, like people are worried about, it just isn't the same. Even when that game was remade, using anything but original controllers makes it just feel off let alone that this game will have the framerate issues. It'll be a novelty to revisit but, that's about it. I guess Rare is putting the remastered vesrsion on Rare Replay, so I'll check that version out. I doubt I'd get any of my friend's from back in the day to try the online multiplayer on Switch anyway.
I’m surprisingly excited to play the Goldeneye single player mode. It’s been a loooooong time since I played that game.
For now the only retro game I want from Nintendo is Paper Mario for the Gamecube. Everything else I think I can get for a reasonable price.
I can't wait to have the Mario Party games to play with friends. Makes me feel like I need to get more controllers for multiplayer! It's also really pushing me to get the NSO N64 controller, but it's still so expensive.
Also stoked for Pokemon Stadium 2. I still have all these games on the original cartridge, but having it on Switch makes it so much more convenient and portable. The news about Harvest Moon is a bummer. That was one I was really looking forward to seeing eventually. Oh well - the GC remake is more than enough too
I honestly don't want any games based on subscription services.
Just let me but the ones I want!
Goldeneye and the 3 best Mario Party games
Goldeneye was a huge Surprise! Can't wait to play Online!
@Jhena Not the Mario parties. MP 3 fetched well into a 130 euro's... Not anymore probably! 😂❤️
Pokémon stadium is going to be hard to complete with only rentals!! 😱
It was so much fun though, so I can't wait to play them again!!
I will be getting the Expansion Pack just to play Goldeneye. Zero interest in the other titles.
My backlog is too big with switch games alone so expansion pack does not interest me
Oh, come on, lovely people! Give the Mario Party trilogy some more love! In a year where the only new Mario game we got was a Mario Strikers multiplayer alpha test for full price, I think they are deserving of way more hype! 🌟
@garfreek
That is also a pretty steep price. Thanks for the warning. Thankfully I am not really into Mario Party now, but you never know.
Anyway after reading this I think it is very good those Mario Parties will be released on NSO.
Definitely Pokemon Stadium 1 and 2
For the love of God just put DK64 on Switch alreadyyyyyy
I mean, Goldeneye, I guess, but I both played that one to bits back in the day and, paradoxically, was never too huge on it. I was more into Perfect Dark.
So I chose Pilotwings because, while I did play it back in the 90s, it was only during a 5-day rental window and didn't really "get" it. I think I might appreciate it more now.
Also, Excitebike. I remember being frustrated with the controls back in the day, but I got frustrated easily. I probably would've bounced off Wave Race at that age, which now I love. So I want to give Excitebike another chance.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
I've played pilot wings recently. It's still pretty fun.
Goldeneye, Mario Party and Excite Bike. Also, no one mentioned this, but on the japanese Direct, there was a date for Goldeneye, and it said 2023. Guess we'll have to wait just a bit longer to play the game on the Switch.
Wave Race 64 and Goldeneye 007 are enticing me to upgrade my NSO subscription. If we can't get Rare Replay on Switch (which I would buy day 1), hopefully Nintendo will add the other Rare N64 games to NSO.
It’s pretty unfair to Microsoft that they are allowing Nintendo to use Banjo Kazooie but Nintendo won’t give them Donkey Kong 64 as an add on game for Rare Replay.
I don´t like Nintendo 64 games era...
The only 2 N64 games i liked in the past were...Xtreme-G and F-zero X.
But i won´t pay for NSO expansion.
Aside from the obvious one, Mario Party 3 is the one I'm excited the most for since it's still my favorite Mario Party to this day for the Duel Boards.
@Don Maybe Microsoft and Rare can give Nintendo "Grabbed by the Ghoulies" in another return...
Mario Party 1-3, but I don't have the service. It's not worth it when I can already play these games without a monthly/yearly subscription.
@lumothesinner I never understand the people who think that no one who likes Goldeneye has played it recently so they don't realize it hasn't held up. I own Goldeneye on the N64 and I play it occasionally for nostalgia. I'm well aware of it's current state and I still love it. I'm excited for it to be on NSO because of the memories it holds for me. Honestly, now I find myself enjoying it more for the music and sounds that I remember so well more than the graphics or gameplay. People need to stop assuming that everyone who still loves Goldeneye is just not informed or whatever. It was and is a great game if for no other reason than the memories.
Now that we have Goldeneye I have a small shred of hope that we will somehow get WWF No Mercy
@KevinP given the only current legal way to play it is using a legit n64, I think you are in a very small group of people who will have played it recently and knows what it feels like. If you like it the way it is, I am sorry as my comment does not apply to you
The vast majority of people will be in the group of played it 20 years ago and looking through rose tinted glasses, or never played it and only heard how it was revolutionary for its time. Those are the people who are going to be disappointed when they finally are able to play it (again).
@lumothesinner My circle must be unique because I know quite a number of people who have N64's and the original game and were thrilled that it was coming to NSO. I'm sure you're right that there will be quite a few who are caught off guard but I think for people my age who played it as kids, it'll bring back enough nostalgia that it'll still be a blast to revisit.
Goldeneye is the most exciting but I’m really excited for Pilotwings 64 since I loved that game and it never got a VC release on Wii or Wii U.
1080 Snowboarding all the way! I mean c'mon can't wait to get all pumped up from all the memorable tunes from that game Starting with that opening song we all created our own lyrics to, then to the deep voiced "TEN EIGHTY" and finally right into "Work your body, Work your body! Work your body, Work your body! Get DOWN!...."
Smash Bros when?
Had to be Goldeneye. But almost chose Pilotwings. That is such an awesome game, with the best music.
Pilotwings 64 easily. I love the SNES game so much. Been waiting & wanting for Nintendo to make a new Pilotwings proper.
However, I think the most impactful additions will be Mario Party 1-3 being pseudo-online now which is cool.
... Wun can only hope.
Rat attack, turok rage wars (black cart), & Diddy long racing would be my prefered picks. And or original smash!.
That's easy. Whichever one doesn't require a second subscription fee to access.
Pilotwings 64 always seemed like a really fun experience. I can see myself getting lost in it for a few days
I am excited to play the mini games in Pokemon Stadium. I remember some being as good if not better than Mario Party.
While I enjoy Goldeneye, I still have it on my N64 and play it occasionally. So my pick is Pilotwings 64, unlocking birdman mode and just chilling out, swooping around the maps was genuinely relaxing once you'd mastered it. I should'nt have traded that in all those years ago, but then, that could be nostalgia clouding my mind. Always have a soft spot for my N64, and those sticks are brilliant as long as you look after them all 4 of my controllers still work a treat.
@Gravitron still the best wrestling game made. Revisit it on my N64 every now and then for a two player tag team, 60 minute, hardcore, iron man match with my brother, chaining TKO, tap outs and pins after the 30minute mark. Just brilliant fun.
@KevinP I'm with you on Goldeneye. I still play it, and yeah it hasn't held up quite as well as PD but it's still a lark and such an achievement for it's time.
Alot of people judge things very harshly comparing them to games that were inspired by Goldeneye. halo is a direct response to the sales success of Goldeneye, it kept selling and selling as word of mouth passed around, so there was big money in FPSs.
Half life popularised a narrative fps for a PC crowd that was much much smaller than the fan base Goldeneye garnered at that point in time, so while technically a "better" game, Goldeneye really opened younger players and publishers eyes to movie style FPSs.
You only have to look at the following generation of Medal of honour frontline (aping Saving private Ryan) and Call of Duty to see Devs and publishers took notice of Goldeneye s success and wanted to build something as action movie like and memorable.
That's my take on Goldeneye, it should never really have been as big a success as it was, but it really hit at the exact right time in gaming.
You should have done a multiple select lol
Goldeneye 1080 classics
Killer Instinct Gold and Zoda’s Revenge. And Gameboy. Lol. I voted Excitebike 64 because I never got to play it, and it looks fun.
GoldenEye 007!!!!
