Re: Dragon Quest's 'The Hero' Revealed As The Next Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC Character

Caryslan

@Kameken Tell me, how is he on the tier list? Who are the other DLC fighters? Should I get a PS5 or the new Xbox.

Because unless you're from the future you have no idea how The Hero plays aside from the asine "He has a sword and shield, so he must play like Link!"

Funny, I don't recall any version of Link in Smash having magic, a menu to pick spells which include sleep and zoom as well as a reflector.

Did you even watch the trailer?

Re: Video: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 X-Men Trailer Reveals New Characters

Caryslan

I kinda feel sorry for Capcom. One of the reasons why MvC:I got such negative feedback was because they could not use the X-Men in that game. A lot of fans were turned off and ignored the game over the fact that no mutants made the cut.

In the same year, Disney starts to buy Fox and now that they got the film rights back have started to promote the X-men. I wonder if things would have been different had the X-Men been allowed in that game.

Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Games List: 10 More Titles Revealed

Caryslan

@ThanosReXXX Alot of people are also forgetting that Nintendo has to get Microsoft on board to play ball so they can get the Rare games on there.

Now, people are gonna argue that they don't need Rare to make the N64 Mini work, but let's be honest here. Rare's output helped the N64, and they are just as much a part of the system as Nintendo themselves were. Not having games like Perfect Dark, Both Banjo games, Diddy Kong Racing, and Jet Force Gemini would feel wrong.

Nintendo can't even really dip into a stellar third-party line-up like they did with the NES and SNES minis because the third party support for the N64 sucked.

Honestly, I don't get why people want to play an N64 mini so badly.

I would rather see a Game Boy Classic.

Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Games List: 10 More Titles Revealed

Caryslan

@Bunkerneath To be fair, the NES and SNES classic both had great lineups that covered many of the more famous games on the platforms.

The only one who dropped the ball on these systems was Sony who somehow ignored the vast libary of the PS1(which blows most other systems even those by Nintendo and Sega out of the water) and dumped crap on there.

Nintendo and Sega were both able to get both a Castlevania and Mega Man for their classic consoles. Sony was so lazy, their classic console somehow failed to get SOTN(which should have been the ultimate no-brainer pick) and any of the numerous Mega Man games that were on the PS1, which included Mega Man 8, Mega Man X4, Legends, etc.

Anyone who worked on the Sony Classic console should be hanging their head in shame when they see what Sega has done.

Even on their worst day, Nintendo could never screw up the way Sony has.

Re: Sega Ages Line Struggling To Appeal In Japan, Interest Overseas Better Than Expected

Caryslan

You know, it's kinda funny and sad that all these years later, Sega still has not learned one of the key lessons that helped toss them out of the home console business, and that's their focus on Japan and trying to cater to that region at the expense of regions in the West that actually bought their systems and games.

Sega, I am typing this because you need a reality check. Most of your fanbase for your games was not Japan, it was North America, Europe, South America, and the west as a whole. Do you know why Alex Kidd are selling so well in Europe and not as good in Japan? Because the f***ing Master System was a best seller over there that even beat the NES!

The West should get everything first from you! That means all your remakes, all your ports, everything. Because the Japanese fanbase you are trying to cater to so badly does not exist outside of maybe the arcade games, the Saturn, and Yakuza.

Otherwise, Western gamers are your bread and butter! We were the ones who embraced Sonic and made him a global icon. Japan could care less about him, no matter how much you try to shove him down Japan's throat!

This quote honestly confuses me

"We definitely need to work harder to satisfy our Japanese fan base."

Who the hell cares about your Japanese fanbase that does not exist! You should be bending over backward to satisfy your Western fanbase. It was Europe and Brazil who helped save the Master System, and it was those two regions plus North America who made the Genesis/Mega Drive a massive success and made you a major player in the video game market after years of being Nintendo's b****.

Hell, even if it failed in the end, it was North America who bought Dreamcasts and tried to make it a viable system. Japan let that system die and ignored it.

Stop ignoring your loyal western fanbase. Japan outside of a few rare exceptions has never given a crap about Sega, its games, or their systems. It was the West that produced a generation of kids who are loyal to Sega to this day.

Why don't you reward that loyalty for once? Tell the Japanese fans who never supported Sega in the first place to go shove it and embrace the fans who loved your systems and games.

Re: NES And SNES Mini Are Still Big Sellers For Nintendo

Caryslan

I honestly don't get Nintendo's logic sometimes. They had two red hot systems that dominated the plug and play retro market and even beat modern systems like the PS4 in sales during certain months.

So, how does Nintendo follow up this success? By taking the NES and SNES classics off the market and not making a Game Boy or N64 version.

They got damn lucky Sony screwed up the PS1 Classic, but they have a bigger problem.

Sega could very well steal the market away from them. The Genesis Mini is getting tons of great hype, and Sega is not playing around this time. They are putting 40 of the best Genesis games on their system.

Nintendo just left the market wide open for Sega to swoop in and take it away from them. Why would Nintendo do something so foolish?

Re: Sega Mega Drive Mini Launches Worldwide This September, 10 More Games Revealed Today

Caryslan

Since Disney is onboard anyway, why not put the Marvel games that Sega made for the Genesis back in the day on here anyway?

I would love to see Amazing Spider-Man vs the Kingpin and X-Men 2: Clone Wars added to this system. Those were two of the best games on the system.

Also, add in the first X-Men game if they can figure out a way to get around the wacky Reset button stuff.

Re: Bethesda Confirms Wolfenstein: Youngblood Will Include A Download Code Instead Of A Game Card

Caryslan

This is the price Nintendo owners pay when they decide to go their own way and ignore the industry standards. Since the Nintendo 64, Nintendo had given the middle finger to CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, and other standards their competitors have used, and it has bitten them in the ass time and time again.

People are mad at Bethesda, and while I can understand they people may be upset that they weren't forthcoming, what in the hell are they supposed to do?

If they don't bother with any physical release, then Nintendo fanboys will rip them apart.

If they don't port this game to the Switch, then they will get blasted for abandoning Nintendo's hardware.

So, they do what they can. Because the Switch lacks a HDD and does not support Blu-Rays this is a solution they came up with.

If you want to blame somebody, blame Nintendo. While I love Nintendo, they love to flip off the rest of the game indsturdy and impose their own standards. It works for their games, but often turns off third-party developers who don't want to mess with it.

But I love everyone's solution. Let's just not buy the game, that will show them! Or, they will simply walk away from Nintendo and not look back. Then we can go back to the dark ages where third-parties ignored Nintendo outside of tossing an odd game our way.

Don't like this? Well, its the price you pay for having a console-quality handheld that lacks an HDD and Blu-Ray drive. The portability of the Switch has a trade off, and third-parties have a right to make money off their games.

Nintendo systems have always had a trade-off since the Nintendo 64 had carts rather than CDs. Third Parties are willing to support Nintendo and the Switch this time which is more then could be said for the Wii and Wii U.

Do we return that support by not throwing fits over boxes and knowing we can play MK11 and Wolfenstein anywhere we go, or do we ignore these games over a trivial issue and give third-parties all the more reason to abandon Nintendo once again?

Our trade off for having a download code is having versions of console quality games we can take anywhere, something the Xbox One and PS4(without a Vita) will never have.

Re: Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition Set To Storm Switch This Summer

Caryslan

Honestly, I would rather have a brand new Duke Nukem game with the character running around shooting aliens while making one-liners about everything that is going on. You know what, have the strippers, and everything else that makes Duke so special compared to other shooters.

But sadly enough, we will never get another Duke game. All we'll get is Duke shoved into cameo roles in other shooters and Duke Nukem 3D put out over and over again(it's a classic, but come on!)

The problem is the SJWs had their field day trashing Duke Nukem Forever for it's "outdated" portrayals of women in the game while video game critics trashed the game as well.

The funny thing is, they must all live in an alternate universe that got a different version of Duke Nukem Forever because I played the game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3, and had a blast.

The graphics while not the best on either system were about on par with Call of Duty and in some case I felt they were better then the Modern Warfare 3(which came out the same year), the controls and gameplay were good for an FPS game, I loved the fact that you could interact with the world(so many games look pretty, but limit how you interact with the world. It's minor, but putting popcorn into a microwave and then eating it adds something to a game) and I overall had a blast with the game.

But we'll never get a Duke Nukem sequel, and I hope we don't because I fear that it will be some water downed BS so the game will avoid the wrath of the SJWs that have nothing better to do then attack something.

The funny thing is that while everyone was bashing Duke Nukem's humor, it's mild compared to some of the stuff movies and TV shows have on. Hell, Family Guy has a serial rapist whose actions are played as jokes and somehow none of that attracts the ire Duke Nukem did.

So, while it's nice to see Duke in a game in 2019, it's also bittersweet because we will never get a real Duke Nukem sequel ever again.

Which is a shame, because Duke Nukem Forever and Doom 2016 are some of my favorite games that I had a blast playing, and I enjoyed them despite not really being into FPS games as a whole all that much.

Honestly, I'm a bit shocked Duke Nukem Forever was added as a BC title on the Xbox One, but I'm glad it was added because I'm enjoying it all over again.

Re: Son Goku (GT) Is Being Added To The Dragon Ball FighterZ DLC Roster

Caryslan

@Heavyarms55 I honestly believe GT and Super are both canon, but exist in different time lines.

GT takes place in a timeline where Beerus never woke up and came to earth seeking the Super Saiyan God, thus preventing Super's events from happening.

Super takes place in the timeline where Beerus did come to Earth, leading to the events of Super.

So, my belief is that GT and Super both are canon, the divergence is if Beerus woke up or not.

Re: Rumour: Microsoft Plans To Bring Xbox App And Game Pass To Nintendo Switch

Caryslan

A crazy thought, but what if Microsoft somehow works out a deal to get NES and SNES games on the Xbox through this deal.

Think about it, Nintendo would get Microsoft Game pass which would be filled with games that have never been on Nintendo platforms before, while Microsoft would walk away with NES and SNES games that would be an app like what is on the Switch now.

Tie the NES/SNES games to Xbox Live which works across both the Xbox and Switch.

On top of which, Nintendo could finally get access to Rare games again.

I hope this offer goes through. I could see this benefitting both companies in the long run.

Re: Random: John Cena Is A NES Aficionado

Caryslan

@Mach_Rider I never said you did. It's just that Urban Champion and Altered Beast are games people love to s*** on all the time and act like they are horrible games.

Like I said, there are far worse games. At least those two offer some mindless fun.

I also consider both of them favorites that I love to play from time to time.

Re: Random: John Cena Is A NES Aficionado

Caryslan

@Mach_Rider I honestly like Urban Champion and love playing it from time to time. It's kinda like Altered Beast, just mindless fun punching things in the face.

There are far, far worse games out there then those two titles.

Re: Rapper Soulja Boy's At It Again, This Time Releasing His Own Knock-Off Game Boy

Caryslan

@robr The problem is not just with his fanbase which will likely eat up anything he puts his name on, but let's face it, these are aimed at people that want to play older games, and don't give a damn about the legality of it.

Now, I'm not condoning piracy, but Nintendo and other companies are not making things easy by locking their games up in vaults and never putting them out on newer generation hardware. Nintendo kinda started to go in the right direction with the NES and SNES classics, but those console still lack many of the classics those systems had to offer, and Nintendo is going to take them off the market at the end of the year.

Look at Sony and the PlayStation Classic. You have a guaranteed money maker and Sony somehow managed to screw it up with a lackluster game selection that barely touches the real classics of the PS1 and poor emulation.

This is the reason why rom sites thrive. Because there is no legal way to play these games, or if there are you have to jump through hoops to do so.

Look at the Switch. Nintendo could be hitting a gold mine with VC on that system, and yet they are content to toss out the same warmed over NES titles and then put it behind an online membership.

Want to play The Legend of Zelda or SMB 3 on your Switch? Well, you have to keep your membership active. Let it end? Well, tough s***, no NES games for you.

It should say something when the best consoles that are emulated on modern systems are the Neo Geo.

Yes, Soujia Boy is breaking the law and profiting off other people's work, and I don't defend him. But companies like Nintendo need to stop this BS and put an end to it.

If Nintendo truly wanted to kill emulation in its tracks, then rather then suing a Rom site, build a Nintendo Retro Console. Market it as a separate product from the Switch and offer a line-up of games with the system with more retro games added later on.

Basically a Virtual Console in a box, but legal with Nintendo's blessings and support.

Suing Souija Boy is not going to solve a damn thing. Even if Nintendo sue him to the ground, it does not stop the larger problem, and Nintendo is a major part of their own problem, as are other video game companies.

The stance of retro games reminds me alot of how digital music worked until Apple showed up. Before Apple, you had to jump through hoops to download songs, and many people simply turned to Napster and Kazaa because doing it legally was not worth it. The Record Industry was iconically their own worst enemy.

Until someone finally realizes the potential of selling retro games and making them appealing, you're still going to have rom sites and sleazy people like Soulja Boy selling shady products to desperate gamers who want to play an older game they can't get anywhere else.

Re: Nintendo Switch Surpasses Lifetime PlayStation Vita Sales Within Japan

Caryslan

@Anti-Matter The Vita does have BC with most download games that were bought on a PSP. That includes PSP games, most PS1 Classics, and even the minis.

When Sony runs sales, you can even buy PSP games for the Vita and they are now marked in the Vita category.

The only thing the Vita does not run are UMD games.

But given the 3DS, Vita, and Xbox One are the only systems on the market that offer any form of BC with previous consoles, its better then nothing.

Even Nintendo has moved away from BC with the Switch.

Re: Video: SNES Classic Runs PSone Games Better Than The PlayStation Classic

Caryslan

@FX102A You could make a PS1 Classic that features real classics with only 30 games. Want Proof? I'll do a list right now.

1. Final Fantasy VII

2. Crash Bandicoot

3. Spyro the Dragon

4. Tekken 3

5. Jumping Flash 2

6. Soul Edge

7. Grand Theft Auto

8. Metal Gear Solid

9. Mega Man X4

10. Mega Man Legends

11. Final Fantasy Tactics

12. Resident Evil: Director's Cut

13. Dino Crisis

14. Cool Borders 2

15. Twisted Metal 2

16. Tomb Raider

17. Silent Hill

18. Parasite Eve

19. Street Fighter Alpha 2

20. Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

21. Pac-Man World

22. Wild Arms

23. Doom

24. Syphon Filter

25. R4: Ridge Racer Type 4

26. Wild Arms

27. Legend of Dragoon

28. Rayman

29. Mortal Kombat Trilogy

30. Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey.

So, while this may not be a perfect list, I do think most of these games are must-play classics on the PS1. The problem is not the sheer number of games, all other retro systems like the NES, SNES, and Genesis share the same problem.

The issue is that most of the classics are missing on the PS1 classic. Not have Crash or Spyro on the PS1 Classic is like Nintendo putting out a retro system with no Mario games.

Re: Success Of Nintendo's Mini Systems Made It "Perfect Timing" For SNK To Release Its Own Device

Caryslan

@Regpuppy The idea of retro consoles that look like old hardware, have old controllers, and have a collection of games themed around a system existed long before Nintendo ever created the NES Classic.

Now, I give Nintendo credit for taking the idea and refining it to the point where it enjoyed massive mainstream success, although some of the popularity can also be tied to the fact that the NES and SNES are two of the most popular systems of all time, and are much more mainstream then Intellevision, Colecovision, and even the Atari 2600.

Only the Sega Genesis is the equal in this department, but the systems always fell short of the mark.

So, props to Nintendo for making their mark in the dedicated retro system market. But while they improved on the idea, they were not the ones to innovate the concept.

The issue I see here is that companies like SNK may be misreading the market and thinking their own consoles will see like gangbusters.

The Neo Geo is not only a less popular system overall, but its games can be found on pretty much any mainstream gaming device.

What helped the NES and SNES sell so well besides their quality was the sheer popularity of those system, a good mix of games that were still classics and playable, and the fact that all those games either never appeared in the virtual console, or were always locked to Nintendo's hardware.

So, the insane success of the NES and SNES Classics while impressive is driven by several factors that are hard to reproduce. The only system that could have matched and surpassed the popularity of the NES and SNES was the PS1, but Sony botched the game selection of their classic console.

Re: Soapbox: That Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct; Let's Talk About It

Caryslan

Something I want to make a note on is the backlash I'm seeing all over the internet over Kirby being the only survior of the attack that seemingly wiped out the other fighters.

People are acting like it's Sakurai's bias at work by making Kirby the first playable character and from the looks of it, the hero of the mode.

But if you look at things more closely, its Sakurai's eye for detail at work here. In the Kirby series, the main villian in most of the main series games is almost always an Eldritch Abomination that targets Planet Pop Star. Also, a common theme is that before Kirby gets involved, the world is often changed and other powerful characters like Meta Knight and King Dedede often fall under the control of this Eldritch Abomination before Kirby can free them.

So, what does this have to do with this trailer? Well, how everyone reacted kinda fits into their respective canon descriptions. Samus and Link tried to stand their ground and fight, and lost to the beams, although a nice touch was that Link's shield stopped them for a brief moment.

Zelda, Mewtwo, and Palutena all tried to use barriers to stop the beams and were defeated, the Inklings and Snake tried to hide from the beams, while Bayonetta, Lucario, and Gerninja tried to dodge around the beams but lost due to the sheer number of them.

Bowser naturally tried to fight the beams with fire as did the Pokemon Trainer with Triple Finish. Of course they lost to the beams as well.

Finally, the Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt Dog, and Villager just kinda stood around not knowing what to do, fitting to characters that come from franchises with no fighting in them at all.

The only characters that flee are Captain Falcon, Sonic, Pikachu, both Pits, Kirby, Rosalina, Diddy King, and Falco, and all of them besides Kirby fail for various reasons.

Captain Falcon does not even make it to the Blue Falcon before he's over taken, Sonic slows down just enough to to try to help Pikachu which causes both of them to be overtaken, Both Pits lose the power of flight once Palutena falls, Rosalina and Diddy Kong simply aren't fast enough, and the beams basically cut off Falco's arwing, preventing him from dodging anything.

Kirby on his warp star proves to be a smaller target then the other characters who tried to flee, and he's able to dodge the beams better, and the Warp Star seemingly teleports out of harm's way.

So, Kirby survives because not only has he faced these kinda of threats before, but because he knew what to do(he's the only one to make any real effort to dodge the beams, everyone else either tried to fight them off, used their barriers, dodged with teleports and counters until they were overwhelmed, ran in a single direction where they could be cut off, or panicked) and because he's gets away just in time.

It fits into the theme of his games. An all-powerful Eldritch Abomination shows up out of nowhere and quickly overwhelms the other powerful fighters of his world(In this case, all the other fighters of Smash) and Kirby somehow survives or escapes to put things right.

In a way, it makes sense Kirby is the only survivor and has to rescue everyone else. Mario, Link, Samus, and the others might fight powerful foes, but Kirby is the only fighter on the roster who fights a never ending parade of Eldritch Abominations who invade his homeworld and always has to stop them.

If anyone knows what to do, it would be Kirby.

Re: SNES Mini And NES Mini Combined Global Sales Surpass 10 Million Mark

Caryslan

@KazooieTooie Well, I won't be part of that 10+ million if it does surpass what Nintendo did.

The game lineup on the Playstation Classic sucks.

No Crash? No Spyro? No Castlevania: SOTN? No Mega Man games? No Street Fighter Alpha 3? No Legend of Dragoon? The list goes on and on.

Granted the NES and SNES Classic were missing games I wanted to see on them, but if you wanted a capsule view of what those systems had to offer, they did a good job.

But the Playstation Classic is missing tons of games that defined the PS1.

Re: Waluigi Fans Cause More Drama At PAX Aus With '#WahtAboutMe' Super Smash Bros. Protest

Caryslan

Toad deserves to be the next Mario rep that gets into Smash. Not Geno or Waluigi.

I don't understand how a character who has been playable in three main-series Mario games(Super Mario Bros 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, New Super Mario Bros U), is a fixture of every Mario spin-off, and has even gotten his own games(Wario's Woods, Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker) still is not even in Smash, and is even below Geno who made only one appearance in a Mario RPG twenty years ago, and Waluigi who is nothing more then a filler character in Mario Spin-offs.

Toad or Captain Toad should be the next Mario Rep that gets in! I'll give Daisy a pass since she's an echo fighter and really popular herself.

But Toad deserves better then to be a freaking counter in Peach's moveset. Toad not being a playable rep in Smash is the real injustice here, not some filler character who is more famous for memes then he is the games he shows up.

There, I said it. Toad in some form deserves to be in Smash over Waluigi or Geno.

Re: Dragon Ball FighterZ - A Stunning Switch Port That Will Leave You Breathless

Caryslan

@LordVal I can go on seven game win streaks on Mortal Kombat X, can win numerous games in 1 on 1 Smash online playing as Ganondorf alone, and can win at other fighting games.

Street Fighter V? I get my butt kicked over and over again. I don't know what is it with Street Fighter, although I will say that SF is not user-friendly compared to other fighting games.

Re: Dragon Ball FighterZ - A Stunning Switch Port That Will Leave You Breathless

Caryslan

@roadrunner343 Please, they need to stay away from Marvel. Disney is too much of a controlling partner to form a healthy relationship with. Capcom may be at fault for Marvel vs Capcom's downfall, but Disney is to blame due to them not letting the X-Men in the game, refusal to let the game be streamed at Evo(a major reason why the game did not show up at Evo) and other stuff.

I would rather see Arc Systems use the Dragon Ball Fighter Z formula for other anime franchises such as Naruto.

Re: Nintendo And ROM Website Owner Looking To Avoid Lengthy Court Proceedings

Caryslan

You know what I find funny? That Nintendo targets rom sites and shuts them down, while Sega and Atari openly sell a licensed handheld by Atgames that has an SD Card Slot and openly explain how to add games to the devices.

So on one hand, we have Nintendo and their closed door policy to emulation and Roms, while Sega and Atari pretty much have no problem with people emulating roms and adding games to their handhelds.

I love Nintendo for their games, but Sega has always been the cooler company when it comes to this kinda thing. They make adding your own roms a selling point of buying an Atgames handheld.

Re: Random: English Voice Actor Of Goku Assures Fan He Hasn't Recorded Lines For Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Caryslan

Here's the thing, how many people though 10 years ago that Jason and theAlien would be in a Mortal Kombat game? Or that Negan would be in Tekken?

Guest characters are rapidly becoming a popular trend for fighting games since they bring in more main-stream appeal from people who might not normally buy the games, but their make money for the video game publishers and the owners of these charchters.

People keep acting like Goku will never get in because of some unwritten rule that bans non-video game characters. But let me ask a question.

How many people thought Cloud would appear in a Smash Bros game? For people who are too young to know why this is a big deal, let's go over some history.

During the NES and SNES days, Square was one of Nintendo's most loyal first-party developers, and their Final Fantasy games(alongside other titles) helped give Nintendo as edge over Sega and NEC in the home video game market.

Come the Nintendo 64, and Final Fantasy VII starts development on that platform. But Square becomes frsutrated by the limitations of carts, and leaves Nintendo to make games for Sony and its Playstation.

This results in a bitter falling out between the two companies that lasts for an entire generation, with Square even mocking the N64's storage medium in ads. Final Fantasy VII eventually comes out on the Playstation, and becomes a huge hit that not only brings Final Fantasy and JRPGS into the mainstream outside of Japan, but becomes(much like Street Fighter II) the gold standard that modern RPGs still draw from.

Final Fantasy VII's success far surpasses any of the entries that were on Nintendo platforms, and Cloud becomes an iconic character in gaming and is closely tied with the Playstation.

Up until Cloud showed up in Smash Bros, people openly debated who would be the rep if Final Fantasy got one in Smash. Terra and Cecil were popular picks, the Japanese favored Bartz from Final Fantasy V, and even generic but iconic classes like Black Mage were tossed around.

That's why many people were shocked to see Cloud show up as a playable character in Smash Bros. The trailer even lampshades this by having Cloud say "I'd never thought I would see the day."

Cloud turned out to be the most popular DLC character, and Sakurai later said that Cloud was picked over other Final Fantasy charcters because he was the most well-known character and the one who would make the most money.

Why is this important? Because up until Cloud showed up, the other third parties had made major apperances on Nintendo platforms. Mega Man and Nintendo are closely tied since the NES days, Sonic made a home on Nintendo platforms and found great success(compared to Playstation and Xbox) after Sega left the hardware market, Pac-Man, Ryu, and Snake have all made major appearenaces on Nintendo hardware.

So, how does this tie into Goku? Well, the most common argument that people make is that Goku is an anime character and therefore adding him opens the flood gates for every other character.

But here's the thing, Goku is what Ryu is to fighting games and Cloud is to JRPGs. Due to Dragon Ball's popularity, he's pretty much the first thing people think of when they think of Anime. Goku is pretty much the most mainstream anime character in the world. Adding him is not going to open floodgates because his popularity and mainstream appeal far surpass most other characters.

As for the "He's an anime charcter and does not belong in Smash Bros" here's my counterpoint to that argument. Since the first Dragon Ball game came out on the Famicom all the way to Dragonball Fighter Z, Goku has been in 45 games on Nintendo platforms, with only the Virtual Boy and Wii U never getting a game that had him in it.

Barring Mario, Link, Pikachu, and maybe a few others Goku has been in more games then the vast majority of Smash's roster with 45 games in Nintendo platforms alone.

Finally, he can work gameplay wise if you think about it. The Tournament of Power was pretty much a glorofied Smash Bros match between 80 fighters, and flight was disabled. Goku is also known to purposly hold back his power to fight on the same level as weaker oppoents to test himself.

So, his Smash appearance could be him not using flight due to nobody else having that ability and holding back his power so he can fight his oppoents on an equal level.

My money is that Goku will show up in Smash Ultimate, but as a DLC fighter. You want to set the internet on fire and overshadow most of Sony and Microsoft's announcments at E3? Show off Goku as a DLC fighter for Smash.

So, I bet he's going to be in. Its strange how his voice actor keeps addressing this issue and it keeps coming up.

But I'm going to double down. Not only is Goku getting in, but Vegeta comes in as Goku's echo fighter.

So, Goku will be a DLC fighter with Vegeta included as his echo fighter. Like him or not, Goku will print money and will surpass pretty much any other possible DLC character in terms of popularity and how much money he makes Nintendo, Namco-Bandai, and Toei.

Me personally? I want to see Goku in the game, and I could see him as a wonderful addition to the roster.

I don't care what the haters say, I want to see Goku in Smash!

Re: Nintendo's Recent Legal Action Against ROM-Sharing Sites Scares Major Player Into Removing Downloads

Caryslan

@Trikeboy So, let me see if I understand your argument. My option(and the option of many other fans) is to learn Japanse and if we're not cool with that, then we can just stick it?

How about Nintendo give us a legal avenue to play these games? If you're promoting Geneology of the Holy War banners in Fire Emblem heroes, then maybe people will become curious as to who Sigurd is and want to play the game he appears in.

Why not put a small team on translating the game and put it out on the Switch? You know what I love about Sega? Despite their faults as a company since they left hardware, they still know how to make fans happy.

They translated Monster World IV despite that being a much smaller franchise with less of a cult following then either Fire Emblem or Mother.

But let's take Mother 3 as an example. I understand their argument as to why Mother 3 was never translated into English when it first came out. The GBA was pretty much a dead system, and Mother 3 was a sequel to Earthbound, a game that crashed and burned in the west.

Over a decade later, things have changed. Earthbound has enjoyed popularity that it never saw in its original release on the SNES, and both Ness and Lucas have become established fighters in Smash Bros.

You have fans who have been begging Nintendo for an official translation of the game. Can you blame fans for becoming frustrated and looking for other options to play the game when Nintendo ignores them?

People can stand on the moral high ground all they want, and I agree that if you can legally buy a game then you should not download a rom for it. Super Mario Bros can be bought on the Wii U and 3DS eshop and can be found on the NES classic. So, downloading it is stealing it.

But if a game is not offered for sale or never came out in your region in the first place, how if it theft if a fan truly desires to play that game? What recourse do they have if the game can't be legally bought?

Is it our fault Nintendo is so damn stubborn?

By the way, telling fans to go learn another language to play a game or they can stick it is insulting. Not everyone has time to sit around learning a second language to play a game, and Japanese(and people can correct me if I'm wrong) is one of the most complex and difficult languages to learn.

Why should I have to go to school to play a damn game? I speak English, and I want to play my games in the language I have known how to write and speak since I was a child. Is that too much to ask for?

Re: Nintendo's Recent Legal Action Against ROM-Sharing Sites Scares Major Player Into Removing Downloads

Caryslan

@Amsterdamsters What if I can't buy a game? I recently decided to look for roms for Fire Emblem: Geneology of the Holy War because the introduction of characters from those games in Heroes got me curious about the game.

So, as an English speaking player, how am I supposed to "buy" the game? I could get it in Japanese, but it would be worthless to me since I can't read, write, or speak Japanese.

I would gladly buy a Nintendo translated version if they would put the game out, but they don't see to be in any rush.

What about games like Mother 3 which Nintendo has also refused to translate despite massive fan demand?

People seem to think that everyone who uses roms are dirty jackasses who can't be bothered to play 5 bucks to buy Super Mario Bros.

But Roms go a long way to not only helping preserve the games from the past, but allow fans to play games that may have never been officially translated in the language.

Plus, Nintendo's war on rom sites really does nothing in the long term. All its done is scare Emuparadise into removing a few roms that might offend Nintendo. They still offer roms from Atari, Sega, Sony, and other platforms Nintendo can't control.

So, all Nintendo really did was scare these sites into removing Super Mario Bros and Nintendo published roms from these sites. Nothing has changed otherwise.

Besides making it harder for fans of franchises like Mother and Fire Emblem to play games that never arrived in their regions.

Plus, I'm going to outright say it. It's an asshole move for any company to cry foul over copyright infringement with games if they can't be bothered to offer the games for play on modern systems.

I said this before in another comment I wrote. I can find pretty much any movie I want to watch on a digital store or Netflix and other services going all the way back to the silent era to modern day blockbusters.

Same goes for TV shows, books, even comic books.

Why can't I access video games as easily with no hassle?

Re: Yes, King K. Rool Really Is Coming To Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Caryslan

So, King K. Rool tops Bowser's Tough Guy armor by simply being able to repel attacks with his belly? I wonder how that would work in terms of gameplay, but it would be funny if Rool ends up being a high or top tier character simply because he can repel characters off his belly.

Maybe this is his counter...

I saw the crown toss from DKC1, the Blunderbuss from DKC2, and the boxing gloves and the weapon from DK64.

Did DKC3 get left out of the mix?

Re: Feature: What Does Nintendo's Shutdown Of ROM-Sharing Sites Mean For Video Game Preservation?

Caryslan

@Syrek24 The problem is that you assume everyone that goes after emulation is a dirty thief who refuses to pay money for games.

Let me ask you a question. I want to play Castlevania: Bloodlines again. Because Konami, the IP holder refuses to put the game out on modern platforms, I have two choices.

Buy a used copy, and a Sega Genesis or one of the modern Atgames systems that can play carts.

So at best, at least 49.99 for the cheapest model of an Atgames Genesis clone and 39.99 to buy a used copy off Gamestop.

So, almost a hundred bucks to play one game. And that's one of the cheaper games.

Besides, who am I stealing money from by downloading a ROM? My Walgreens down the street and Gamestop?

Fine, I get that some people will download games that can be found in digital shops and basically steal them. In that regard, I agree with you, that is stealing and no different from downloading a modern game off the internet.

But what happens when the IP holder refuses to put a game out?

Also, what about playing translated versions of games that never came out in the west. Mother 3 is a notable example of a game that Nintendo never bothered to bring to the West despite demand for the game and Lucas being playable in the Smash series.

How about Fire Emblem? Thanks to Heroes, I have been curious to play the games that have Sigurd and Leif in them. They never left Japan, so the only recourse is to play a Japanese rom with text translated in English.

How am I stealing from Nintendo if they aren't willing to take advantage of their own IP? Why not translate Geneology of the Holy War and put it out? I would gladly pay money for an official translation from Nintendo, and I doubt I would be the only one. Especially since the translations of many Japanese games tend to be spotty.

But with Nintendo unwilling to do this, my only choice to play Geneology is to find a rom and put a patch on it.

Yes, getting a rom of Super Mario Bros is stealing and I agree with that mindset 100%. But there are also tons of grey areas, and the harsh truth is, most of these publishers don't give a damn about their own history or offering their older games for newer audiences.

That includes Nintendo who to this day refuses to offer a translated version of Mother 3.

How am I or anyone else stealing if a company does not want to sell me their product?

Re: Feature: What Does Nintendo's Shutdown Of ROM-Sharing Sites Mean For Video Game Preservation?

Caryslan

While some people may look at having roms as evil, the harsh reality is that most video game companies do little to offer their older games for a consumer to buy.

Let me go over some examples.

Why is Adventure Island II on the 3DS Virtual Console, but neither Adventure Island or Adventure Island III are offered for sale? On the same token, why is only Adventure Island only offered on the Wii U, with no options to buy its NES or SNES sequels?

Why is The Castlevania Adventure 2 not on the VC when the first game is offered for sale? For that matter Konami, where's Metal Gear: Ghost Babel or the NES MG games? Or any Hudson soft games besides a couple that got tossed onto the service randomly?

Where are the older Bomberman games barring the ones from the TG-16?

Where are the Final Fantasy Legend games or the older NES or Game Boy Color Dragon Quest games? Square?

While we're on the topic, why did Japan get all six Famicom Final Fantasy games on the 3DS Virtual Console, and we got none? For that matter, why did Japan get the NES Bubble Bobble?

The problem is that older games sit in vaults and none of these companies seem to have any vested interest in trying to put these games out for new generations of gamers.

Castlevania Bloodlines was a game that came out late in the Genesis' lifespan. It also has never been released on modern machines, despite the NES trilogy and Super Castlevania getting numerous re-releases on modern machines.

Hell, even Dracula X got put out along with Rondo and the Castlevania on the X68000.

What is a person supposed to do?

Other forms of media don't seem to have this same issue. Let's take older movies for instance. Pick any title, and chances are, you can either buy it off an online store, on DVD or Blu-ray, find it on a digital streaming service, or watch it on TV.

I can find films from the 30s on most services, and even silent films if I look hard enough. Combine that with channels like TCM, and you have pretty much every movie at the press of a button. Some titles may not be out there, but those are few and far between.

Same goes for TV shows. Hell, you can even watch old game shows from the 70s, 80s, and 90s legally if you want to!

My point is, it should be simple to find older games. But let's look at a specific example, and that is Sega.

Sega has a history that stretches back to the early 80s in video games, and much like Nintendo, their history even predates video games. Sega was an innovator in arcades that advanced technology and even created genres like the 3D fighting game.

They also have an extensive history in the home console market, from the SG-1000 in the early 80s to the Dreamcast. Between their countless arcade games and their home console libraries that number hundreds of games each, Sega should have a massive backlog of games to offer modern audiences.

So, we are we getting yet another Genesis collection? Don't get me wrong, I love the Sega Genesis, but that system is only a small bit of Sega's history, and it ignores the Sega CD and 32X side of things as well.

The Master System has hundreds of games, why have I never seen a collection for it? How about an arcade collection? Dreamcast that offers more than four games?

I missed the Master System when I was younger given its failure to catch on in the US. If I want to play Sega's 8-bit titles, I have to use emulation and download roms. Why are these games not for sale?

This is the problem here. It runs deeper than licensed games not being put out. Gaming companies are often ignoring their own history, or if they did honor their history its the same games over and over again.

Nintendo puts out the same batch of NES games while Sega pretends they never did anything else besides the Genesis.

Fans who want to play these games again or like me are curious about aspects of gaming their missed have no choice to dig up roms from the deepest corners of the web.

Which raises the question as to why. If I can watch silent films made over a hundred years ago, then why can't I legally buy Master System games?

I understand not every game will be offered and of course, licenses can keep certain games from showing up on modern services. But most companies don't even try. Either they ignore their older games or just randomly toss them onto the eshop with no rhyme or reason.

Even Nintendo is not immune to this. Why are the Star Tropics games and Earthbound Origins on the Wii U eshop but not on the 3DS one? On the flip side, why is The Mysterious Murasame Castle only on the 3DS Virtual Console but not on the Wii U?

I don't understand how any video game company can complain about emulation when they barely bother to put any effort into selling their older games to modern gamers.

Re: Sakurai Is Well Aware That You Want Waluigi In Smash Bros. Ultimate, Says Reggie

Caryslan

@HappyRusevDay That's the thing, ROB and Wii Fit Trainer are two characters who represent important parts of Nintendo's history.

ROB is one of the main reasons why Nintendo even gained a foothold in NA. After the video game crash of 1983, retail stores wanted nothing to do with video games and very few refused to deal with Nintendo, despite their offerings being superior to Atari's games.

With ROB, Nintendo was able to market the NES as a Robot Toy, and got the foothold that allowed the NES to get into the hands of consumers and the rest is history. Since that time, ROB has made numerous cameo appearances in various games, with a playable appearance in Mario Kart DS predating his debut in Brawl. So, ROB being in Smash is another way Nintendo can honor the little Robot that changed gaming as we know it in NA.

As for the Wii Fit Trainer, she represents the Wii/DS era of Nintendo when they were making more casual titles that targeted people that did not normally play video games.

My point is, ROB and Wii Fit Trainer are important links to Nintendo's history, and given Smash is pretty much a who who's of Nintendo and gaming history, their inclusion makes sense.

The problem with Waluigi is that he's not only unimportant to Nintendo's history as a whole, he's not really that important to the Mario series outside of filler.

Paper Mario, and Toad both have a stronger argument for inclusion over Waluigi. Paper Mario of course is the star of a very successful sub-series of the Mario series, while Toad is his various forms has been playable in Super Mario Bros 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and New Super Mario Bros U, and been the star of spinoff games including Wario's Woods and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker.

This is also including Toad's inclusion in Mario spin-offs and their recurring role as supporting characters in the mainline games.

Simply put, Waluigi is not important to Nintendo or the Mario series. He's fine as an assist trophy.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Fans Are Harassing Masahiro Sakurai Over Waluigi Snub

Caryslan

@Abes3 Daisy has a huge fanbase herself, and people have demanded she get into Smash just as long as people have wanted Waluigi.

So, blaming her and her fanbase is pointless. Besides. Daisy likely got into the roster for the same reason why Lucina was picked over Chrom in Smash 4. They could simply paste Peach's moveset onto Daisy, tweak it a bit, and boom, you have an echo fighter.

So, I doubt Daisy took away Waluigi's chances to be in the roster anyway. She was an easy to make echo fighter that fills a major request fans have had for years. That's why she made the roster.

With that said, if the Mario series did get a brand new character who is not a clone or echo fighter, I can see two who ruined Waluigi's chance.

-Captain Toad has been pushed in recent years by Nintendo, his game is being ported to the 3DS and Switch, and he has tons of potential for an intresting moveset, something that Sakurai loves in a character. Putting him in would also fulfill fan requests to make the Toad character playable in Smash. Factor in the fact that Toadette can also be added in as well as an alt costume, and he's one of my front runners for being a newcomer.

Paper Mario- While his stock has fallen in recent years due to games with a mixed reception, he has always been a popular pick. He has vast potential for a moveset, represents the RPG branch of the Mario franchise, and would be different enough from Mario to justify his inclusion. Even the argument that adding him would put three versions of Mario in the same game is no longer valid given Smash Ultimate has three versions of Link in the game already.

So, I think Waluigi's chances were taken down by two Mario characters who are more important then he is.

Which is the key problem here, Waluigi is not that important to the overall Mario franchise. If he's going to be a rep for the Spin-off games like Mario Kart and the Mario Sports games, then why should he get in over a Koopa Troopa or Shy Guy who also appear in those kinds of games? Speaking of which, Peach(and Daisy) already have the spin-off games covered in their movesets.

The only thing Waluigi has going for him is a rabid fanbase who appears to be willing to do anything, even crossing lines and hassling Sakurai to get him in.
