The 0/10 reviews are ridiculous, but I will say this. Nintendo could have avoided a lot of this by including an option or mode for 3 lap races. Most people would have kept the default with intermissions, and the vocal minority could go on being boring.
As someone who got interested in Front Mission in games later in life and just wanted a good set of remakes, very disappointing.
I do think the first remake came out decent, though, especially compared to what's on display here. Forever Entertainment would have been better served to let the first dev do all three, I think.
The DNA from Odyssey is there. But I think some of EPD took Odyssey groundwork and made this happen while the larger group developed something new for Mario, maybe from scratch, maybe not. Either way, 2026 release is not crazy.
@jobvd Capcom did a Square during the N64 generation where a lot of IP's (including Street Fighter) found a new home on PS1. The relationship has improved over the years, with Monster Hunter Rise being a pretty big deal. Seeing SF6 let's me know that the doors are wide open now. Life is good.
They were great games from the 6th gen that most certainly deserve a sequel. Okami shouldn't be that hard of a sell. They re-release it kind of regularly. Viewtiful Joe would require a reintroduction...not sure if Capcom wants to invest in that. My guess is they dropped that idea when Kamiya left.
It's been a good source of retro games for Switch, kind of shocked me there's that many now. I wish Sega had been half that industrious with Sega Ages.
Personally I would like to see Sigma Star Saga make a return. For those who don't know, it was a game by WayForward that was part RPG, part side-scrolling shooter. I traded my GBA stuff a long time ago, but would love to play that again.
It would put a smile on my face, though I'm not sure we would see that now. You saw it more in the good old days when the SNES or N64 and cartridge was in front of you, sitting next to the CRT TV. Yes, I'm old.
I don't know how I feel about this. Some of the better experiences from Square for me this generation is the non-AAA stuff...Live A Live, Octopath Traveler, etc. Hopefully then can strike a balance instead of throwing more money at Final Fantasy.
Also meant to say that if it's really like the first, then a lot of the gameplay mechanics the reviewer is stressing about improve as you progress and learn techs, especially one for targeting specific wanzer parts.
This is supposed to be a lighthearted, funny, carthartic experience that celebrates the franchises and indoctrinates another generation into the Super Mario fandom. This was probably never going to be an Oscar winner (but who knows?). I look forward to seeing it.
To me this is Nintendo sticking to their guns drip-feeding the games. They have never been satisfied with how they have monetized the roms, hence switching to this from the old vc.
They want the roms to be evergreen revenue, we want to keep them like you would a steam game. I don't think Nintendo could ever truly stomach the Steam model.
In a way I'm not surprised. The live show just keeps getting more expensive/impractical in the internet era. E3 will probably have to be more like GDC to survive.
I really do wish Path of Radiance and Radian Dawn could be remade somehow...the two games play a little different, but they tell an amazing epic together.
AAA releases across the industry had a focus on open worlds and exploration. Arceus, Forgotten Land, and Xenoblade 3 come to mind. But also Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring.
Outside of AAA, a lot of RPG's or similar games with epic stories, world building, etc...Triangle Strategy, Live a Live, and Chained Echoes to cap off the year.
Even the ones that do not fit that mold had a "we're going all out" epic vibe. Bayo 3 and Shredder's Revenge come to mind. Even compilations like Cowabunga Collection were unusually comprehensive.
For Indies, I didn't play as many this year, so not as much to say, but Shredder's Revenge and Chained Echoes raise the ceiling quite a bit in my mind for what an indie experience can be.
Here's hoping Nintendo can keep that momentum in 2023. Zelda is not far away, and Metroid is surely on the horizon. Maybe even Mario or DK.
As someone who played and loved Front Mission 1st on DS, my best advice is to stick with it and not give up in the early game. The arena is important for grinding. And while the wanzer pilots have accuracy problems in the early game, they eventually learn techs that allow them to focus on specific parts. I may be biased, but I'm sold on it.
The notes make me think an F-Zero is in the cards, which makes my day.
I want another Baten Kaitos, but the hangup there is Namco owns that IP. Monolithsoft developed it for them before Nintendo acquired them, and they have been busy with Xenoblade and running support ever since. I'd say the best chance of that is near future with Xenoblade completing a trilogy, but who knows.
I do not think this affects the general Direct...I do think Nintendo felt urgent need to market XC3 before it's release, especially where they moved it up. I also think they just want it to be a roaring success following XC2.
I guess what I'm saying is to just relax. The Direct will come and other games will get to use that time instead.o
Earthbound had some odd marketing back in the day...comedic and oddball, like very weird, tongue-in-cheek travel guides in the rpg section of Nintendo Power, repeated in the player's guide that came with the game. A lot of effort went into it at the time, but the tone probably did miss the mark.
The only other thing I would say is that Earthbound was an rpg that came when rpg's were beginning to really become popular and kids like me were still learning what a jrpg was. I remember people at the local video store talking about how long it took to play through the game and how hard it was, like that was weird in itself. I think the Mother series really did suffer from being ahead of it's time.
The problem has been their leadership, with the hope that an acquisition changes the leadership. That is not always guaranteed, though.
Stuff like this makes me want to support indie studios more. Less of this bull. More experimentation. More trying to please the consumer than directing the consumer.

Re: Nintendo Download: 26th June (North America)
Definitely getting Front Mission 3.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"
All that complaining about MK World being $80 didn't change a thing lol.
Re: Donkey Kong Bananza Direct: Every Announcement - How Would You Rate It?
Crazy good Direct. To be honest, for me it proved that DK should have been the launch title over MK World.

Mine is the casino sidequest in Super Mario RPG, has been since the SNES days.

Re: The Witcher's Netflix Series Announces "Fifth And Final Season"
I actually like the first three seasons, not confident about the next two but I guess we'll see.
Can't but feel like Cavill would do well with a role in the Fallout series...he would probably get along with the writers over there a lot better.

Re: Embracer Group Lays Off 97 Staff Working On Next Deus Ex Game
Sad. Seems like all they know to do is cut the good parts or the good ideas.
Re: Don't Expect A Remake Of Final Fantasy 6 Soon, If Ever
If it was me, I would go the Live A Live route and call it a day.
Re: Don't Expect A Remake Of Final Fantasy 6 Soon, If Ever
Kind of makes sense. Look how long it is taking just to get to Part 2 of FFVII remake.

The localization stuff is a shame. I can say the 1st one is faithful to the original.

Re: Talking Point: What Was The Video Gaming 'Theme' Of 2022?
@Teksetter Very true, I think we are still in the middle of devs getting back to normal pace.
Re: Talking Point: What Was The Video Gaming 'Theme' Of 2022?
To me it was "go epic or go home".
AAA releases across the industry had a focus on open worlds and exploration. Arceus, Forgotten Land, and Xenoblade 3 come to mind. But also Horizon Forbidden West and Elden Ring.

To this day Skies is one of my all-time favorites. Great read. I really wish Sega would get somebody to do a remaster or true-to-original remake.
Re: Review: Chained Echoes - One Of The Very Best RPGs Of The Year
As someone who supported the kickstarter, I'm very pleased it turned out so well.

Re: Front Mission 1st: Remake Finally Locks In Release Date On Switch
@tho_mi Sort of, I would compare it more to Fire Emblem or Battletech. Pilots do not have permadeath, and the mechs are very customizable.
