We've heard before about the Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games working on a "new 3D project" and now it seems to have come up again during an interview Ars Technica. Yacht Club's game designer Alec Faulkner has revealed how the Mina the Hollower engine is also powering a new "unannounced 3D game":
"This engine is actually brand new, made from scratch by our team. That’s been our secret for the past five or six years—it’s being used to develop both this game and concurrently our unannounced 3D game.”
While Mina might look similar to a title like Link's Awakening on Game Boy Color, apparently "under the hood" it's got more in common with a game like Breath of the Wild.
Back in 2020, Yacht Club Games' mentioned how the next logical step was to work its way up to a "big 3D game", while at the same time issuing a reminder it was working on a "new 3D project" via a job listing.
Yacht Club Games has just released Shovel Knight Dig with the assistance of developer Nitrome, and it seems to have struck gold with this latest release. You can learn about it in our review:

Curious...and kind of hilarious it's first run will be a game boy color style game.
These guys are one of the few that get the retro look just right. Accurate, but fix the flaws (like flickering sprites).
I'm really curious as to how that'll translate to 3D!
Shovel Knight 64 here we come! I am joking of course but it would still be pretty epic. I am excited for any new game they may be creating though.
Shovel Knight 64?
A Shovel Knight 3D platformer would be acceptable.
Absolutely agree, Shovel Knight collectathon is what we need.
A 16-Bit style Shovel Knight beat em up ala Golden Axe / Knights of the Round would be fantastic, don't skipped the 16-Bit era completely just yet. They could call it Shovel Knight: The Revenge of Enchantress where you could choose between Shovel Knight, Shield Knight, and Plague Knight in a quest to defeat the Enchantress and the Specter Knight once and for all.
Whether its a new SK game or a new IP it is exciting that they are fully trying their hands on 3D development for the first time.
Shovel Knight does technically run on a 3d engine as well. I don't remember the last time I was as excited for a game as I am for Mina.
Like everyone else so far, I too am down for a 64-bit era Shovel Knight 3D platformer/combat/collectathon game.
... Wun can only hope.
I wonder what kind of game it will be. If they're following the route of 8 -> 16 -> 32 -> 64 bit, etc. Then we can expect a 32 bit game first. I'm personally not too fond of the low poly graphical style, as I think it hasn't aged as well as 16-bit sprites/pixelart. But that's just my personal preference
Shovel Knight also runs on a 3D engine, which made the 3D effect possible in the 3DS version.
A lot of modern 2D games actually run in a 3D engine, they just use a fixed 2D plane and logic mostly, and a method of projection that lacks depth.
@Serpenterror giving the ending of Shovel Of Hope/Plague of shadows the enchantress returning doesn’t seem as likely
