Re: Soapbox: Why A Nintendo 64 Classic Edition Might Not Be Such A Good Idea

Asaki

I don't know why so many people are convinced that an N64 Mini would be all 1st party titles. I just looked at the SNES Mini, and more than half of the games are from 2nd/3rd parties like HAL, Rare, Konami, Capcom, and Squaresoft. Some of those Konami games alone would make it a worthwhile purchase.
Also to keep in mind, if they keep the storage at 512MB, they wouldn't be able to fit a whole lot of ROMs. Maybe 15 of the largest ones (32MB each), depending on how much of the flash memory is filled with other things.

Re: Feature: How One Man Is Turning Dead DS Lites Into Gorgeous Game Boy Advance Systems

Asaki

DS Lite screens have the wrong color space for most GBA games, though. You can see it clearly in most of those photos: the games, fittingly, have a much more neon looking color palette. Game Boy Micro, if you're lucky enough to have one, really has the best screen for GBA. The original "fat" DS is a close second, but the color looks a little more washed out there.

I've been curious to see how a "fat" DS with v5 firmware compares, when it's flashed to allow for multiple brightness levels.

Re: Dragon Quest XI On Switch Will Arrive "Much Later" Than Other Versions

Asaki

Looks like I might have to import the 3DS version and do my very first "translation guide" assisted attemp Not really looking forward to it, but who knows, it might be fun.

I guess, realistically, since it takes them four years to translate DQ7, 3DS would be long dead by then...

Unofficial translation will probably get a CAD. Switch port will likely get canned. -Maybe- I will buy the PC port on sale if reviews are really good, but all of their other PC titles are awful cell phone conversions, so I'm not holding my breath :/

Re: West Of Loathing Is A Wild West-Themed RPG Full Of Stickman Cowboys

Asaki

Maybe some day Switch fans will get a web browser, so they can play the first game

@JKRiki The main point of the game is humor. It's not meant to be some outsorced eye-candy treat, the illustrations are part of the joke. Plus, the creators took a lot of inspiration from Infocom games, and most of KoL was text.

Re: Review: 80's Overdrive (3DS eShop)

Asaki

Good review, I agree with a lot of it. Great graphics and music (wish there was a "random" music option though), but the driving physics feel like they were lifted straight from a programming tutorial, and the AI is -really- cheap. They seem to have really tight rubber banding, too...blaze through first place for a while, then bump into a bush or something, and three other cars zip right past you >__< Frame rate could be better, but it's not awful...I'll have to check if enabling the faster New 3DS CPU speed helps any.

Good tip about restarting the race for free though, I'll have to start over and do that from now on. I kept losing and watching everyone else climb up the ranks, it felt like I was never going to catch up.

Re: DLC Review: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - The Champions' Ballad + Expansion Pass

Asaki

I spent a good number of hours scouring the castle for a new DLC outfit that has almost no defense and cannot be upgraded

I knew most of the DLCs would be "cheat" items to make the game easier for people who didn't like the vanilla game, but after 100%ing that, I guess it is kind of nice to have more sidequests, to be back in Hyrule again, even if they offer little motivation (one of my least favorite parts of any Zelda game). I'm trying to do those first, and save the new shrines for later, so it feels more like I got my money's worth.

Surprisingly, so far the Master Trials is my favorite part. It's a lot meatier than that island was. Bombs are still OP though

Honestly, I think I'm more miffed that I had to delete so much stuff to make room for this on my WiiU >_<

Re: Review: Quest of Dungeons (Switch eShop)

Asaki

Have they added a "wait turn" button yet? I gave up on the 3DS version pretty quick, because I got tired of being cheap shotted by almost every single monster =| What good is a Roguelike if there's no strategy???

Re: Random: Modders Turn GoldenEye 007 Into Goldfinger 64

Asaki

Woah, they actually finished it! =D
I was torn weather I wanted to go for an Everdrive for the N64 or the SNES during the Black Friday sale this year, this might help sway me one way or the other...

@thesilverbrick I could never tolerate the original control scheme, I always have to change it to 1.2 (stick to aim, C-buttons for strafing). I much prefer it to modern FPS with dual analogue...well, that is, if the N64 stick is still in good condition, anyhow...

Re: Don't Pay Over The Odds For A SNES Classic Mini, Urges Reggie Fils-Aime

Asaki

The best thing in the world would be if the release date came, and the scalpers flooded eBay only to find that the company put a worldwide BAN on selling the SNES Mini...in my dreams @_@

@TheFatPlumber The amount of units they would have to make to "stop the scalpers" would be enormous...even if this fantasy scenario came to pass, now you've got market saturation, PLUS billions of units in the hands of scalpers, who can't make any money off of them, and return them all to stores. Now Nintendo is out a LOT of money, and they have billions of units in a warehouse that they can't sell, so they try to coup a loss by destroying everything and burying it under slabs of concrete in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Well, I guess that might not be so bad, I hear Atari is doing very well these days, aren't they??

Re: Feature: Exploring The "Switch Tax" And Why Nintendo Was Right to Use Game Cards

Asaki

"...most developers won't want to go through the additional effort [of compressing game assets] when they've been perfectly fine dumping their data onto roomy Blu-Ray discs."
Ugh, that's exactly the problem, and it's not just BDs. I hate when I have downloaded/installed programs on -any- platform, and I'm deleting things to see how much space I can clear up...and I'm looking at this 16-bit styled 2D game and wondering why the heck it's three gigabytes large >__< Some simple optimization could go a LONG way.

Re: Miyamoto and Other Developers Discuss Star Fox 2 and the SNES

Asaki

@samuelvictor This might be a bad example, because so many of the modern games in the series bombed, but Sonic the Hedgehog features humanoid animals as playable characters.
@Heavyarms55 Almost no SNES games actually used high resolution mode though (I know Kirby 3 and Seiken Densetsu 3 did), so for most games, Genesis had the same resolution or higher.

Re: Game Boy Color Screen Mod Almost Makes The Console Complete

Asaki

I'm waiting to see what alternative he can come up with. Honestly, the AGS-101 screen isn't really that great, the refresh is almost as bad as the DS Lite.
Something that doesn't have to be harvested would hopefully be a lot less expensive, too, and require less modifications to the shell.

Re: Random: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's New DLC Contains A Weird Hidden Area

Asaki

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but I've had this image as my desktop wallpaper for almost two and a half years now, and I'm pretty sure it's not in the final game: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/02/eiji_aonuma_explains_that_the_legend_of_zelda_for_wii_u_will_push_the_hardware_but_that_the_series_has_always_been_open_world

It's probably just a prototype Hateno Village, but would be really interesting if it showed up in the second DLC. That's obviously Death Mountain...probably Dueling Peaks to the left of it. I need to load up the game some time and try to see how well the landscape matches up.

Re: Sega Forever Launch Marred By Terrible Emulation

Asaki

@eltomo If they can't even emulate the Genesis properly, I doubt they'd be able to pull off Saturn, which doesn't even emulate well on PCs. Maybe they'll just port over the PC version of Nights. Ditto with Dreamcast, quite a few of those games have been ported to PC and other platforms.
