Re: Poll: Which Was Your First 'Final Fantasy'?

Asaki

Hmm...
I'm actually not sure if I or II (IV) was my first...
I'm kind of leaning towards the SNES game. I remember my uncle would bring it over sometimes, and I'd be upset because every time he brought it back again, my save would be gone.
I think we rented the first game once or twice, and I never got to play it again until emulation.

Re: Countdown: 3DS eShop Spotlight - Pocket Card Jockey

Asaki

@bouncer0304 I did find a few QR codes, but they didn't help very much.
Maybe I should look again, see if I can find some better ones.

@XCWarrior I have a feeling that Nintendo is either discouraging devs from using the touch screen, or the devs themselves are discouraged, because it can't be used while in docked mode.

There was a similar problem with the DS/3DS/etc., devs just started dropping features like the bottom screen, the 3D effects, the simulated surround sound, touch controls, gyro, etc. Not to mention, there were VERY very few games that took advantage of the extra hardware in the DSi and the N3DS.

@turntSNACO It really is unfair, I hate how it makes races more challenging by stacking the deck.

And I'm not into breeding sims, so I have no idea how to breed a horse that doesn't lose after 10 races.

I did finish the game, though...got lucky a few times. But I still need to win the bonus race.

Re: Game Freak's Secret Best Game Is No Longer 3DS Exclusive

Asaki

I like this game, but OMG does it CHEAT!
Basically, once you get past the tutorial races, they artificially increase the difficulty by stacking the deck against you. It gets real frustrating real fast.
I've had a few lucky horses, but I'm not good enough at breeding type games to figure out which stats will "uncheat" the game.

I'm guessing it's not coming to Switch because it would be a lot more difficult to play it without a touch screen. Not impossible, I guess, but your times would be a lot slower.

Re: Random: Move Over Apple, You Can Run Mac OS On The Wii

Asaki

@masterLEON I'm sure it's possible, just that nobody has bothered to do it yet.

There's a Mac emulator for the DS that runs pretty decent, albiet without sound. DS resolution is about half of what the Mac runs at, though, so there are a couple different options to work around that.

Re: Random: Turns Out You Can Make The GameCube's Game Boy Player A Lot Better

GBI is awesome, I've been using it for a few years now.
If you have the right game(s) and a modded Wii (or a friend with one), you don't even need to chip your GC to use it.

@Markiemania95 No kidding. GB stick is okay for certain games, but I ended up buying a Raphnet adapter so I can use NES and SNES controllers with my GC/Wii. It's great. They have another one that lets you use Classic Controller, I was kind of torn over which to get.

Another company made a HORI pad clone for a decent price, but it went out of print immediately...and I'd prefer something with non-GC button layout anyway.

Or if you don't mind wasting battery, you can always hook up an actual GBA to use as a controller.

@HammerGalladeBro I don't have an original booter disc, but I've heard that it depends on if you play with zoom mode on or not. When I originally had a GBP, it would keep dropping frames, and I had no idea the reason was the zoom mode...ended up giving it back to my friend.

@retroman64 Yeah, the discs are expensive because people always lose them, and until GBI, it rendered the GBP a bit useless. Pre-pandemic, I got a unit, sans disc, for about $10.

Re: Games Like Zelda - What To Play After You've Finished Breath Of The Wild

Asaki

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Marvelous: Mōhitotsu no Takarajima (Another Treasure Island).
It's the game that earned Eiji Aonuma a leading role on the Zelda series (...whoever he is).

There's also Capcom's Goof Troop, which is kind of a mix between ALttP and Makai Island. I don't think anyone on that team contributed to the Capcom Zeldas, though.

@Magrane This one: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/342/

I was playing through a tiny bit more of the other translation, and I think it's just a bit -too- loose for my tastes. This "more literal" one has a couple tiny bugs in it (sometimes text boxes will have an extra blank paragraph), but nothing that's been a problem so far, and I like the translation a whole lot better.

I'm playing on real hardware though, so Idunno if the blank text boxes happen in emulation too.

Re: Anniversary: Dragon Quest V Is 30 Years Old Today

Asaki

@Magrane I think I'm going to, as well. Plus, stupid Long Covid's got my eyes blurring again, so it's difficult looking at my smaller DS screens.

There are two different translations for the SFC version, BTW. One is supposed to be a bit more loose, but I think I'm going to go with the more literal one, just because Byuu did the programming (R.I.P.).

Just playing through the intro a bit, the two translations don't seem vastly different from each other, and they're not too far off from the official translation either.

Re: Anniversary: Dragon Quest V Is 30 Years Old Today

Wow, what a coincidence. Not even an hour ago, I decided to finally dig into this game (on the DS). I had no idea. Happy birthday!

@BloodNinja I know, right?? Weird that they're remaking III (again) but skipping I & II.
If I had the time, I would love to try to hack I & II and the newer translations into one of the DS engines, or maybe try to at least fix the terribly scaled graphics in the newer mobile versions. Yuck. (the 3DS ports are even WORSE)
Hopefully SE will get to it long before I do... ¬_¬

@EarthboundBenjy I got IV and V pretty cheap from one of the Black Friday sales at the Square Enix store...but they didn't have VI =( Found a loose cart of it at Game Stop for $30, still need a case for it (maybe manual too, if possible).

@Magrane Graphics and music are completely overhauled for the DS remake. I'm usually a "the original was better" kind of guy, but I really do love the DQ remakes...I got about halfway through DQIV NES before switching to the DS re-remake.
